The San Antonio Stock
Show Rodeo couldn’t have gone
any better for bareback rider
Kaycee Feild from Payson, Utah.
Feild came into Saturday night’s
finals tied at the top of the money
standings with Clint Cannon from
Waller, Texas. That happened in
part because he won the second
semi-finals after taking a re-ride
and utilizing the always ride for
first place mentality that most
cowboys have.
He and his traveling
partner Tilden Hooper from
Carthage, Texas had both
qualified for the finals and made
a deal that they were going to win
first and second in the AT&T
Center. Hooper was the first of
the duo to compete and scored 89
points on Classic Pro Rodeo’s Big
Tex. Feild knew that if he was
going to win first he would have
to step up his game and that’s
exactly what he did. He had a
stellar effort on the JK Rodeo
horse named Brother and when the
judges added up their scores,
Feild had won the title by four
points and set a new arena record.
“That
horse
was
outstanding,” Feild said. “I
watched Tilden go and was really
excited for him. I knew I had a
chance, but it wasn’t going to be
easy.”
Feild was the high
money winner at the 2011 edition
of the rodeo with total earnings
of $18,927. The horse he rode
here Brother earned the animal
athlete award here giving JK
Rodeo a $1,500 bonus. It was
even more rewarding because the
horse had injured it’s pastern at
the 2010 Odessa (Texas) Rodeo.
Jim Kinney, his owner took him
to Texas A&M where they
performed surgery. He had a year
off and has been back in
competition four times including
the record setting ride here and
each time he has been ridden,
cowboys have earned a paycheck.
“What really pleases me is that
we were able to rehabilitate him
and bring him back,” Kinney said.
“It’s absolutely amazing and I’m
very elated.”
Ardie Maier, from
Timber Lake, S.D., earned back-
to-back championships in the bull
riding. He was one of three
successful riders in the finals and
finished atop the leader board
with a 92-point effort on Four L
Rodeo’s Palm Springs. Last year’s
championship here set Maier on
pace to qualify for his first
Wrangler National Finals Rodeo
(WNFR). He’s hopeful that the
$17,890 he won here this year
will do that again.
The tie-down roping
championship went to Cody Ohl,
who in spite of winning six world
titles had never won a
championship here. Ohl roped and
tied his final calf in 7.4 seconds
for the victory. He added
$16,853 to his earnings. Ohl and
all of the champions received a
championship buckle, a pair of
trophy spurs, and a $5,000 gas
card. The timed even contestants
also got an extra bonus, a gift
certificate for a Driftwood bred
Quarter Horse yearling from
Cuatro Light of the Kincaid
Ranch.
One penny made a
difference for Britany Fleck
from Mandan, N.D. in the barrel
racing. Championships are
awarded here based on earnings.
Fleck’s total earnings of
$14,519.17 were one penny more
than Jill Moody from Letcher,
S.D.
In the steer wrestling,
it was Stockton Graves from
Newkirk, Okla., who made the
victory lap. Graves stopped the
clock in 3.8 seconds and earned
$17,371. He missed the 2010
WNFR after six straight
qualifications and doesn’t want
that to happen again.
“Winning San Antonio has been a
goal of mine for a long time,”
Graves said. “Missing the finals
(WNFR) last year really
continued on page 56
motivated me. This is probably the
biggest win I’ve had in my whole
career.”
This year’s rodeo again
paid well over $1 million in prize
money to contestants. Other
winners were Heith DeMoss, from
Heflin, La., who won the saddle
bronc riding and Chad Masters,
Clarksville, Tenn., and Jade
Corkill, Fallon, Nev., who won the
team roping.

9th Annual Rising Stars Calf
Roping Packs ‘em In
What’s Thanksgiving
weekend without turkey,
dressing, pumpkin pie, and oh
yeah, the Rising Stars Calf
Roping!! On November 25, 26,
27 & 28th 2010, the town of
Duncan, Oklahoma played host to
the 9th Annual Rising Stars Calf
Roping. Once again, contestants
came from all across the United
States and Canada to compete
against a record breaking 684
calf ropers for cash and prizes
totaling over $116,000.00. Since
producers Chris Neal and Mark
Holder first envisioned a roping
of this magnitude, they have
continued to go above and beyond
to make each years roping and
prizes better than the year
before.
Thanksgiving
Day
started early, as 70 12 & Under
Tie Down ropers made their way
into the arena to start off the first
day of competition. The first
round went to Logan Cook of Alto,
TX with a time of 12.2. Austin
Atkinson from Anderson, TX
dominated the 2nd Go with a time
of 10.6, but the 3rd round went
back to Logan Cook with an 11.0.
For the first time in the history
of the roping, the top 12 in the
average were introduced with the
All-Star ropers and roped their
short go calf right after the first
round of the Shoot-Out. Ty Harris
was the winner of the short go
with a time of 10.2 who also took
the fastest calf award, a Rockin
Rope can, but it was Logan Cook
who won the average and took
home a pocketful of money and
the Cactus saddle. For the first
time, Oxbow Tack donated the
saddle for the youngest tie down
roper who was 7 year old Clarke
Gordon from Terry, MS.
Thanksgiving
Day
continued with 81 “ best of the
best “ All-Star ropers who all had
their eye on the Hogg Saddle. The
first round was fast and furious
as Ryan Jarrett turned in a time
of 8.3 to win the round. But in
the 2nd Go they turned up the heat
when Cade Swor stuck it on one
in 7.7 seconds which earned him
the a custom rope can made by
Lankford Leather for the fastest
calf, and Dillon Holder of Vian,
OK kept up the pace in the 3rd Go
with a time of 7.9. The average
was won by Cimmaron Boardman
with a total of 27.3 on three head
which earned him a spot in the
All-Star Shoot Out and a 100x
custom hat donated by K bar F
Hatters. After an amazing
opening ceremony by announcer
Tim Fuller, featuring members
from the National Guard Armory,
and flag presentation by Tiffany
McClure the top twelve came back
for the exciting All-Star Shoot
Out. After the first round was
roped, the top eight cowboys came
back to rope their second calf.
Then the top four competed for
their spot in the finals. The 4th
place spot went to Ryan Jarrett,
3rd place was Ricky Hyde, 2nd
place went to Caddo Lewallen, and
the number one man in the Shoot
Out was Caleb Smidt of
Huntsville, TX who captured the
title and took home the
prestigious Hogg saddle with the
silver hardware on it donated by
Tommy D’s.
Friday morning started
at 8 a.m. when we were greeted
by the Duncan Convention and
Visitors Bureau with free coffee,
juice, and doughnuts. Then 79 1315 Tie Down ropers made their
way into the arena to kick start
the day. Both the first and second
rounds went to Reid Zapalac of
Smithville, TX. Then the 3rd Go
was captured by Westyn Hughes
with a time of 9.7 while the second
place man, Quinton Inman was
close behind with a time of 9.9.
The Short Go was won by Kyle
Parrish of Dale, TX when he
stopped the clock with a time of
10.2 seconds. But it was
a Ringgold, Ga. cowboy, Cole
Watkins, who roped tough enough
to win the Average and take home
the beautiful Cactus Saddles
sponsored by Cinderella Roping
Horses!
The afternoon brought
an even bigger crowd when the
2011 or 2012 Firewaterontherocks Breeding Silent Auction - NBHA TEXAS 26 and R & R
Performance Horses will be hosting a Silent Auction for a 2011 or 2012 breeding to this great
Barrel Stallion, Firewaterontherocks. Bidding will end on Sunday May 1st. Check the website for
the current high bid.
