This is why we went to school, was to

on there. Please come and help. I know
all of these special children will say with
a great big smile, “Thanks, I love you”.

Hoping you all had a wonderful holiday season. We are off and running here
at the Temple and looking forward to a
great year.
Just a few things to keep you updated:
The Potentate’s Ball is right around the
corner, and everyone is busy working to
make it a huge success! This year,
Illustrious Sir Ron Kennedy has made a
couple of changes in purchasing tickets
to his Potentate’s Ball;
• If 3 or more couples purchase tickets
at the same time, they can reserve a
table and will be seated together.
(Tables will seat 10 people/5 couples) As
tickets are sold, the remaining unsold
seats at that table will be assigned to
others attending.
• Tickets will be given to you at the
time of purchase, with your table seating
assigned.
• Tickets for the Ball will be available
for purchase at the Temple, mail or by
calling me at (864)277-4386 or 1(800)833-8409.
• Tickets purchased by mail or over the
phone by credit card can be picked up at
the Temple or may be picked up at the
Embassy Suites beginning at 5:00pm,
Saturday, March 17th.
• Cost is $100.00 per couple.
The 2012 Potentate’s Cruise is off to a
GREAT start! We will have bus transportation available for those of you who
do not want to drive yourselves to
Florida. The buses will depart from 2
locations: Hejaz Shrine Center and the
Greenville Shrine Club and will depart
promptly at 8:00am.
• Cost is $125.00/pp. A deposit of
$25.00 minimum is required to hold a
seat on the bus and the balance due
must be paid no later than October 15th,
2012.
• Information on the hotel accommodations for the night of Friday,
November 2nd will be forthcoming.
Looks like you will be staying in Daytona
Beach! For those of you who have
already paid your bus deposit, I will contact you with all the hotel information as
soon as it has been finalized.
• A Cruise meeting will be held within
the next several months so be looking
ahead for that. We will let you know the
date and time.
I think that is it for now. Please call
with any questions. We are here to help.
Until next time,

HILLBILLY CLAN #2 OUTHOUSE
#1 FLOP-EYE RIVER RATS
By Randall Roof
We would like to thank all of you that
supported the Outhouse last year. The
final total for the year was $19,555.00
being turned in. All the credit goes out
to you, the Outhouse is only the middle
partner.
Sorry about not having an article in
the last Hillbilly News. I mailed it in
wishing all of you a Merry Christmas and
a Happy New Year. Don’t know if they
got it and just didn’t put it in.
This year our Hillbilly Day in Flop-Eye
is Saturday, August 11, 2012. We are
going to give away a Henry Golden Boy
22 or $500.00. Again the tickets will be
$2.00 each, 3 for $5.00, 7 for $10.00, 40
for $50.00 or 90 for $100.00. This year we
are going to add the $50.00 buyers a deal
also. If you buy $50.00 worth, you will
also have a chance to win another $50.00
worth and the same goes out to the ones
that buy $100.00 worth. Also, your name
will be put in the Hillbilly News and the
Hejaz Commentator and on the Board of
Honor at the Club. Last year we had 20
to buy $100.00 worth and 5 to buy $50.00
worth. I hope we can top that this year.
This is a Hospital Project. If you would
like some more tickets the address is
Outhouse #1, P O Box 367, Great Falls,
S.C. 29055. If you would like to help sell
some tickets, your support would be
very much appreciated.

To all the ones that ordered or bought
the Poor Ol George Calendars, thank you
so much for your support on this project.
What about Mr. A.B. Hudson a Kansas
businessman and a Shriner who left his
estate of more than 60 million dollars to
the International Shrine Hospital
System. His donation is the largest in
the hospital systems nearly 90 year history.
Cuzzins, I hope all of you have a good
year and look forward to having another
good year for the Outhouse, and with
your help we can.
God Bless each one of you.

Painting Presented to York Crescent Shrine Club
Lady Angela Blackwell presents York Crescent Shrine Club a painting of Shriners
Children’s Hospital, Greenville.
Lady Angela has done such a beautiful job in capturing the beauty of our hospital and
the landscaping around the front of the hospital. The statue of the Shriner and the Child
at the front is something you need to come by and see in this painting. The photos just
can’t reveal the beauty of this painting. The beautiful blue clouds look so real. Let Lady
Angela know how much we appreciate this beautiful painting she worked so long and
hard on at no charge to us. Illustrious Sir Jimmy Smith was on hand to help Club
President Gary Wright to accept and present this wonderful work of art to the Crescent
Shrine Club.
Lady Angela’s painting reveals the love she has for the Shrine, the Club and for so
many special children who receive treatment at a very special place. Lady Angela certainly is a very special person to so many. Thank you, Lady Angela from all of us at
Crescent Shrine Club. (Pictured is Noble Tommy Blackwell, his wife, Lady Angela,

To all of the Nobles that were in attendance for the Annual
Elections, I would like to Thank You for electing me as your
Potentate for 2012. The Nobles that were unable to attend, I
hope that you can support me as well.
Lady Shirley and I are extremely fortunate to have the talented people that have agreed to assist us this year. With all that
has to be done... from hospitality, beverage, transportation...
to personal, we Thank You.
The next several weeks are going to be very busy. Both Omar
and Jamil Shrine Centers have invited us to attend their Annual
Elections and Ceremony that follows. Having been invited in
the past, it is interesting to see how their functions are handled so differently from our own.
We are also invited on February 4th, to Spartanburg Shrine
Club for Divan and Ladies night. I feel quite sure that new Club
President, Noble Mark Tinsley and his Staff would welcome
everyone out to meet the Divan and mingle with friends you
may not have seen in a while.
To invite the Divan to your Club, please contact Karen White
at the Temple office with the requested date and an alternate
date, for approval. We look forward to visiting each and every
Club.
Lady Shirley and I are excited about the year ahead and look
forward to seeing you all.

Just Wanted to Share This
By: T.W. Martin, Sr.
I read an article in the Spartanburg
Herald Journal, dated December 4, 2011,
The Stroller, written by Lou Parris. The
Article was titled “So Moved” and I felt
like it needed to be shared with all
Shrine Units:
In short, the article spoke about the
Veterans Day parade in Spartanburg,
and described how a huge American
Flag was being held by a crane for everyone to walk or ride under who partici-
pated in the parade. And how Old Glory
was so beautiful blowing in the wind.
A citizen who was there with her
daughter, watching the parade was “So
Moved” when the Shriner Hillbillies
came up in the parade, just as they were
approaching the crane; they each got
out of their vee-hicles and walked
toward the crane, took off their hats and
saluted the American flag.
Both the Spartanburg and Woodruff
Motorcades participated in the parade.

SHRINE CLUBS
Happy Hillbillies Ham’n It Up at the
2011 Prosperity Christmas Parade
Reporting and Photos by Rush L. Workman
The annual Christmas Parade in Prosperity wouldn’t be the same without all the
Nobles from Hejaz and the Newberry Shrine Club. They have been a big part in
past parades and the December 2011 edition was no exception. They were part of
over one-hundred-thirty floats that traveled up Main Street in great holiday
weather— the gamut from the extravagant Santa’s Sleigh to very simple homemade contraptions. The Newberry Shrine Club not only brings floats and happy
Hillbillies but they bring a great Christmas spirit to the parade.
As part of their parade ensemble this year they had a Past Potentate, Champ
Champion, and two future Potentates, Divan members Barry Koon and Billy
Ackerman both from the Newberry Shrine Club. After the parade I had an opportunity to talk with Mr. Ackerman, and he said, “It was an honor to have Past
Potentate Champion in the Thunderbird with me.” The picture of Mr. Champion
is not clear as the cars were moving along at a quick pace, but as I was taking pictures I thought I was photographing Paul Newman’s twin brother. After the
parade, I asked Illustrious Sir Champ Champion if anyone had ever told him he
looked like Mr. Newman.
Hejaz High Priest and Prophet Barry Koon and his driver Noble Robert Earl
Bobb had two positions in the parade. Barry came through early in the parade as
a City Judge for Prosperity, and then they swung around some back roads to join
their buddies. They made a quick clothing change behind the car, and Mr. Koon
later said, “It reminded me of the days when Superman changed in the phone
booth.” A sign change on the car completed the transformation and they slipped
in line when the Shriners came by.
Along with these fine gentlemen were the famous Baja motorbike precision riders from Hejaz, and the always crowd-pleasing jalopy driving hillbillies. Point a
camera toward them, and you get a dozen smiling faces.
If you don’t want it to rain on your parade, be sure to invite the Shriners. It never
rains on a Shrine parade.

Please remember the children in our
hospitals and our obligation to them. It
is because of them that our actions
should always be above reproach. How
far you go in life depends on your being
tender with the young, compassionate
with the aged, sympathetic with the
striving and tolerant of the weak and
strong, because someday in your life you
will have been all of these.
May God Bless you is my prayer.

Great Falls Shrine Club News
By Randall Roof
For the ones that did not make it to the
December Meeting, you sure missed out
on a good one. We had with us that night
Ms. April Alson and her daughter who is
a Shrine patient at the Greenville Shrine
Hospital. She gave a testament about
her stay at the hospital and all they had
done for her daughter and how thankful
she was to the Shrine.
The Officers for 2012 are the same as
last year: Darrell Walder – President,
Nathan Payseur – Vice-President, Eddie
“Pop” Tart – Secretary and Jamie
Mitchell – Treasurer.
Shriner of the Month was Noble Steve
Coleman. Steve, from all of us, thank
you for the fine meals you are fixing for
us.
Shriner of the Year was Noble Jamie
Mitchell. Jamie gives 110 percent in all
he does for us. From the Club Jamie,
thanks so much.
What about Mr. A.B. Hudson, a Kansas
businessman leaving his 60 million
estate to the Shrine International
Hospital System. His donation is the
largest in the hospital systems 90 year
history. He was honored at the St. Louis
Hospital, because it was the closest to
Mr. Hudson’s heart, having been a lifelong Kansas resident.
The Crappie Tournament will be on
Saturday, April 21, 2012 on Lake Wateree,
so mark your calendar to be with us that
day.
The Club has had another good year
with a total of $38,636.00 being donated.
All the credit goes out to all of you that
have supported our projects this year.
We appreciate it very much and hope
you will keep it up.
We are planning a $2,250.00 give-away
on Saturday, March 24th. The tickets are
$35.00 each with 16 chances to win
$50.00 to $1,000.00 if all tickets are sold.
If not, it will be based on percentage of
tickets sold. You must be 21 years old.

CLUB
NEWS
Golden Strip Shrine Club members ride on a float in the Shrine Bowl Parade.
(Pictured: Front row; Noble Bill Perkins and Club President, Noble Jerry Campbell;
Back row; Noble Dan Vess and Arthur Burke).
I would like to thank all the members
for their support as I have become your
President for 2012. The Club needs all of
our help and support to keep the Club
active and prosperous. We want to have
a good year, no matter who the President
is.
I have made a lot of changes this year
and I want to get the new members
involved with the older members in key
positions.
Noble Curtis Mahaffey has been working hard for the past three months on
new bands for our dances and we think
you will enjoy them.
I have two new projects planned for
this year, which I think will be very good
for the Club. I would like to double our
dance attendance with your help.
If you have any suggestions that will
help or improve the Club, I would like to
hear them. As your President I will deal
with any and all problems that come
before the Club quickly and as fair as I
can.
Please, remember if every person
would just take the time to think back
and remember the Oath and Obligation
that we all took to become a Mason and
a Shriner that bonded us together in this
philanthropy to help the kids to have a
better life in this world and help them do
whatever they dream of doing, no matter
what their ages are and with a little common sense, together we can accomplish
this.
Business meetings are the 2nd
Thursday of each month; board meets at
6:00, meal at 6:30, and meeting is at 7:30.
Thanks to Noble Roy Whitmire for the
use of his truck to pull the Golden Strip
Shrine Club float in the Shrine Bowl
Parade.
Once again, Thanks to all the Golden
Strip members for electing me your new
President and I am looking forward to
working with all of you.

PROVIST GUARD NEWS
By: Dick Flowers-Captain
We are now entering a new year for the
Provost Guard. I would like to thank
Dave Doss for a great job as the 2011
Captain and Lady Betty for all her help in
supporting the Unit. We now have new
Officers for 2012 and they are: Dick
Flowers – Captain, Steve Kay – Exec. Lt.,
Jimmy Hicks – 1st Lt., Dave Doss – 2nd
Lt., Jim Strange – Secretary/Treasurer,
and Jack Cartee - Parliamentarian. The
Officers of the Provost Guard do such a
great job and their Ladies support them
all the way.
We just had an Election of officers for
the Divan for 2012 and we all wish them
the best of luck for this year under the
leadership of Potentate Ron Kennedy.
We have a new Recorder – Vernon Meek,
a new Treasurer – Jerry Baxter, Sr. and a
new Oriental Guide – Robbie Murphy.
The Provost Guard will support you in
any way we can.
Almost all Officers running for the
Divan come to speak before the Provost
Guard for their support. We listen to
them all and make our decision on who
to support as a Unit. We do not make a
decision on who has the best line of talk
or who can help us as a Unit. We make
our decision on who is the best qualified
for the job and who can do the best job
for the Shrine Temple and the Hospital.
We are still looking for new members
in the Provost Guard. We are looking for
Nobles who are willing to work for the
good of the cause and who have integrity, and are of good moral character and
who are honest. If you qualify, come and
join us and work with the best Unit in
Hejaz Temple.
We will be going to Destin Florida on
March 2 & 3, for the South Eastern
Provost Guard Association Mid-Winter.
Our next meeting will be held at Hejaz
Temple on February 6, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.
Very Special Congratulations to our
own Provost Guard member Vernon
Meek who is now the Recorder. Vernon
has served in many capacities including
Potentate, Treasurer and now Recorder.
We are all so proud of him.
God Bless you all and have a great time
being good Shriners.

Prepare To Give An Account
Romans 14:12 — “So then, ever y one of us shall give account of himself to God”.
In this passage, Paul told Christians not to look down upon or to
criticize a brother for his decision before the Lord. Among other
things, Paul reminded them that each person will give account of
their actions to God. None of us have the right to condemn the
other. None of us has the responsibility for the practice or opinion
of others. However, everyone has personal responsibility for his or
her own behavior and practice. None of us can go wrong as long as
we pattern our lives after the example of Jesus.
We do not lose the ones we love,
they only go before

JANUARY 2012
Greenville Shrine Club Ladies Auxiliary
By Bren Sherbert
Happy New Year, from the Ladies of
the Greenville Shrine Club.
The Ladies hope you had a wonderful
holiday season and wish you many
blessings in the New Year.
With the New Year here we would like
to announce our new Officers: Bren
Sherbert – President, Beth Bailey – Vice
President, Angie Cox – Secretary and
Sherry Wilson – Treasurer.
Our Tuesday Night dinners have started back and we invite you and your family and friends to come join us for some
great home cooked meals. We serve
between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. and the cost
is $7.00 a plate.
We had a good year last year, and with
your help we can have a better year in
2012. We continue to see some members coming out and even people that
are not members, but my question is
….where are the other members? Won’t

JANUARY 2012
Greenville Shrine Club Ladies Auxiliary
By Bren Sherbert
Happy New Year, from the Ladies of
the Greenville Shrine Club.
The Ladies hope you had a wonderful
holiday season and wish you many
blessings in the New Year.
With the New Year here we would like
to announce our new Officers: Bren
Sherbert – President, Beth Bailey – Vice
President, Angie Cox – Secretary and
Sherry Wilson – Treasurer.
Our Tuesday Night dinners have started back and we invite you and your family and friends to come join us for some
great home cooked meals. We serve
between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. and the cost
is $7.00 a plate.
We had a good year last year, and with
your help we can have a better year in
2012. We continue to see some members coming out and even people that
are not members, but my question is
….where are the other members? Won’t
you please come out to support us. After
all it’s for the Kids in our Hospital.

JANUARY 2012

Great Falls Shrine Club News
By Randall Roof
For the ones that did not make it to the
December Meeting, you sure missed out
on a good one. We had with us that night
Ms. April Alson and her daughter who is
a Shrine patient at the Greenville Shrine
Hospital. She gave a testament about
her stay at the hospital and all they had
done for her daughter and how thankful
she was to the Shrine.
The Officers for 2012 are the same as
last year: Darrell Walder – President,
Nathan Payseur – Vice-President, Eddie
“Pop” Tart – Secretary and Jamie
Mitchell – Treasurer.
Shriner of the Month was Noble Steve
Coleman. Steve, from all of us, thank
you for the fine meals you are fixing for
us.
Shriner of the Year was Noble Jamie
Mitchell. Jamie gives 110 percent in all
he does for us. From the Club Jamie,
thanks so much.
What about Mr. A.B. Hudson, a Kansas
businessman leaving his 60 million
estate to the Shrine International
Hospital System. His donation is the
largest in the hospital systems 90 year
history. He was honored at the St. Louis
Hospital, because it was the closest to
Mr. Hudson’s heart, having been a lifelong Kansas resident.
The Crappie Tournament will be on
Saturday, April 21, 2012 on Lake Wateree,
so mark your calendar to be with us that
day.
The Club has had another good year
with a total of $38,636.00 being donated.
All the credit goes out to all of you that
have supported our projects this year.
We appreciate it very much and hope
you will keep it up.
We are planning a $2,250.00 give-away
on Saturday, March 24th. The tickets are
$35.00 each with 16 chances to win
$50.00 to $1,000.00 if all tickets are sold.
If not, it will be based on percentage of
tickets sold. You must be 21 years old.

SHRINE
CLUB
NEWS
Golden Strip Shrine Club members ride on a float in the Shrine Bowl Parade.
(Pictured: Front row; Noble Bill Perkins and Club President, Noble Jerry Campbell;
Back row; Noble Dan Vess and Arthur Burke).
I would like to thank all the members
for their support as I have become your
President for 2012. The Club needs all of
our help and support to keep the Club
active and prosperous. We want to have
a good year, no matter who the President
is.
I have made a lot of changes this year
and I want to get the new members
involved with the older members in key
positions.
Noble Curtis Mahaffey has been working hard for the past three months on
new bands for our dances and we think
you will enjoy them.
I have two new projects planned for
this year, which I think will be very good
for the Club. I would like to double our
dance attendance with your help.
If you have any suggestions that will
help or improve the Club, I would like to
hear them. As your President I will deal
with any and all problems that come
before the Club quickly and as fair as I
can.
Please, remember if every person
would just take the time to think back
and remember the Oath and Obligation
that we all took to become a Mason and
a Shriner that bonded us together in this
philanthropy to help the kids to have a
better life in this world and help them do
whatever they dream of doing, no matter
what their ages are and with a little common sense, together we can accomplish
this.
Business meetings are the 2nd
Thursday of each month; Board meets at
6:00, meal at 6:30, and meeting is at 7:30.
Thanks to Noble Roy Whitmire for the
use of his truck to pull the Golden Strip
Shrine Club float in the Shrine Bowl
Parade.
Once again, Thanks to all the Golden
Strip members for electing me your new
President and I am looking forward to
working with all of you.

Just Wanted to Share This
By: T.W. Martin, Sr.
I read an article in the Spartanburg
Herald Journal, dated December 4, 2011,
The Stroller, written by Lou Parris. The
Article was titled “So Moved” and I felt
like it needed to be shared with all
Shrine Units:
In short, the article spoke about the
Veterans Day parade in Spartanburg,
and described how a huge American
Flag was being held by a crane for everyone to walk or ride under who partici-
pated in the parade. And how Old Glory
was so beautiful blowing in the wind.
A citizen who was there with her
daughter, watching the parade was “So
Moved” when the Shriner Hillbillies
came up in the parade, just as they were
approaching the crane; they each got
out of their vee-hicles and walked
toward the crane, took off their hats and
saluted the American flag.
Both the Spartanburg and Woodruff
Motorcades participated in the parade.

Greenville Shrine Club News
By Don Tucker, President
First of all, thanks to all of you for a
wonderful and productive 2011. We
have by far had the best year in recent
years and that is a direct reflection on
our Board of Directors and the members
and guests of the Greenville Shrine Club.
You should be proud.
Please remember our Club membership drive. Contact any member or just
stop by and see us. Also remember the
2nd Wednesday is our Members Meeting
with the Board of Directors, starting at
6:30 p.m. It is YOUR CLUB and it is up to
all of you to help us with ideas, suggestions and the decisions needed to make
our Club better.

Chester Shrine Club News
The Chester Shrine Club has been busy
catching up on renovations around the
Club. They have just finished with one
of the bathrooms; it’s really made a
tremendous difference. But that’s not all
that is going on at your Club. They just
finished up with a Hash Sale. And moving on with getting ready for a Fishing
Tournament that Brother Arthur Catoe is
heading up for the Club. Watch for the
upcoming date. By the time you read
this, new Officers will have gone in at the
Club. Come out and support your Club

children. They depend on Shriners to
help them get better; provide things for
them they would not be able to receive
without you. This is why you should
come and take part in your Club and all
the activities so you may learn what is
needed on your part to help bring about
a better life for these special children.

on there. Please come and help. I know
all of these special children will say with
a great big smile, “Thanks, I love you”.
