February 2012
Greetings my fellow Nobles,
Currently, I’m in Charlotte, N.C., helping
plan for the 138th Imperial Session. The
event will definitely be one to remember as
Deputy Imperial Potentate Al Madsen and
Lady Jan prepare to take the next step in
leading our fraternity. Please start making
your travel plans to be in the beautiful city
of Charlotte in July!
Speaking of big events, I would like to
thank everyone who came out to support
the 87th East-West Shrine Game®. The
attendance for the game approached nearly 20,000, and doubled last year’s figures. I
was extremely impressed with how well
the Tampa Bay area and the local media
supported the game.
It was also great to see Nobles more
involved with the game; Imperial Sir Chris
Smith did a terrific job organizing the tailgating party. I would like to personally
thank Nick Thomas, Past Imperial
Potentate and Chairman of the East-West
Shrine Game Committee, and Executive
Director Harold Richardson for all their
hard work, which made this signature
event a successful one.
Earlier in the month, I had the pleasure
of attending the Bagdad Shriners
Installation of Officers Ceremony in Butte,
Mont. Their new Potentate, Sean Johnson,

is an impressive and motivated young man
who helped recruit several other new
members in their early 30s. Noble Johnson
is also a legacy member and I encourage all
of the temples to promote our new Legacy
Program. To learn more about the program, visit www.shrinersvillage.com.
My next stop was Omaha, Neb., to attend
a meeting of the Tangier Shriners. During
the meeting, I was very impressed with
how well the Tangier Shriners are working
together to organize fun activities and
increase membership. The temple also
graciously donated $500 to Patty’s
fundraising program.
I also traveled to Phoenix, Ariz., to visit El
Zaribah Shriners and attend the
Potentate’s Ball. During dinner on Friday
night, I had a chance to spend time with
Past Imperial Potentates Burton Oien and
John VerMaas and their Ladies, Sharon and
Jan. The next day, I went on a gorgeous
motorcycle ride just outside of Scottsdale
with 25 other Nobles. During the ride we
stopped at a well-known restaurant called
Greasewood Flats for lunch. There is truly
nothing better than Shriners, motorcycles
and good food.
Later in the month, I was in Tampa, Fla.,
for the Leadership Conference. In attendance were administrators, Chairmen and
Vice-Chairmen of the Boards of Governors
and other leaders from each of our 22 hospitals; executives from headquarters and
members of the Joint Board. Several of the
hospital representatives gave presentations and we discussed new ways to treat
more patients while lowering costs. We
also had the opportunity to see Leo
Burnett’s marketing presentation and I’m
proud to say it received a standing ovation.
If there is one thing I can guarantee, it is
that Shriners Hospitals for Children will no
longer be described as “the best kept secret
around.”

Looks like the gun or $500.00 giveaway will be a good one again this year.
At the meeting February 1st Nobles Rob
Owensby and Ben Barbee came up to
me and gave me $100.00 each for the
tickets and the Recorder of Anah Shrine
Center in Bangor, Maine, Noble Sonny
Crocker, P.P. called and wanted a $100.00
worth, plus $100.00 worth to sell, and I
have not had the tickets printed yet.
Four of us went to Rock Hill Tuesday,
February 7th, to Hillbilly Clan #2
Outhouse #3 Meeting and had a good
time. Cuzzins Ed. Henson and all the
Cuzzins showed us a great welcome.
They are doing a good job trying to help
the kids.
Back to the gun or $500.00 give-away,
if you don’t know, we are going to give
away a Henry Golden Boy 22 or $500.00

put of the board at the Club, plus in the
Commentator and in the Hillbilly News.
Cuzzins Rob and Mr. Ben have the honor
of being the first two names on the
board. As a lot of you know, they are
from Knoxville, Tennessee.
If you have a Hillbilly car or truck and
would like to show it off, Cuzzin Nat

The Northern Tool Box Project was a great success. A check for $3,000.00 was turned
into Hejaz Shrine Center for our hospital. Noble Benny Patters was on hand for the
drawing at Northern Tools. Thanks to Northern Tools Store Manager, Steve Purpur for
all of their support over the past years. Without their support we could not do what we
do for our Hospital. Jean Workman was the lucky winner of the tool box give-away.

members of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Greenville Couriers Unit. The Couriers
each volunteer 1 – 2 days per week. Their duties include running errands for all the different departments in the hospital. Currently having only 5 members in the Couriers
Unit, as you can imagine, they are kept extremely busy! New members are always welcome. If you are interested, please contact Brenda Parnell, Shriners Hospital for
Children - Greenville, Volunteer Coordinator at 864-255-8754.
Noble Herschel Carter was presented a plaque for the 2011 Top Candy Seller for the Shrine Center
by Past Potentate, Jimmy Smith. Noble Herschel sold $28,257.00 in candy along with working a number of other projects. He works the Fish Fry at the Jackson Shrine Club where he is a member and
was named Shriner of the Year there. Noble Herschel was very involved with the Northern Tool project at the Crescent Shrine club which turned in a check for $3,000.00 to the Shriners Hospital for
Children, Greenville Unit. Noble Herschel was honored at the 2012 Elections meeting being presented one of the few Disney Awards given out. Noble Herschel has enjoyed working in so many different ways for his Temple and Clubs. But he will be the first to tell you his true joy is the children.
Thank you, Brother Herschel for having such a true love for your fraternity.
This is the second message and it seems like yesterday when I was
writing the first one.
On February 4th, Divan and Ladies night was held at Spartanburg
Shrine Club with great fun, good food and fellowship.
On February 11th, the Unit and Club Seminar was held at the
Temple. We had scheduled excellent speakers and a huge number or
Nobles and some Ladies were in attendance.
The Potentate’s Ball will be March 17th. I hope to see as many of
you there as possible. Plans are being made for the special event.
Come out and enjoy the evening with us.
The Spring Ceremonial is approaching fast. The first and second
sessions will be held at Mid-City Shrine Club. We will be going to
Greer for the first time for our parade. Let’s get as many of our Units
and Clubs to participate as possible and maybe we can get invited to
come back again! Please start signing up candidates so that we can
be proud. Our membership is steadily declining and has been for a
long time. If each of us would sign just one candidate, think of what
an impact this would make. Let’s get started!
Shirley and I would like to thank you for the warm reception we
have received.
Until the next message, remember; “miles and miles of smiles.”

Each month, Shriners Hospitals for
Children® — Greenville recognizes one
of our patients as the Hero of the Month.
Hunter Jarman received the award for
January. For more than six years, elevenyear-old Hunter has been a patient at
Shriners Hospitals for Children —
Greenville where he is receiving expert
care for infantile idiopathic scoliosis, a
curvature of the spine. Hunter comes to
the hospital to be placed in a Risser cast.
A Risser cast is a plaster cast that is
applied from the collarbone to the bottom of the spine. When the cast is
applied, pressure is placed on the cast
causing the spine to straighten. When
the cast hardens, it holds the spine in
this position. Each cast progressively
straightens the patient’s spine. So far,
Hunter has worn 10 Risser casts.
Hunter was nominated by two
employees for the Hero of the Month
Award:
“I want to nominate Hunter Jarman for
Hero of the Month. Hunter is a bright,
quiet, but very well-mannered young
man. The family travels from Lynchburg,
Virginia, to South Carolina for numerous
clinic visits and to have Risser casts put
on under anesthesia. Hunter is always
very brave.”
“I would like to nominate Hunter
Jarman for Hero of the Month. When
Hunter is at the hospital he is so sweet
and never asks for anything. He is so
thankful when anyone in the cafeteria
gives him some pretzels and goldfish as a
treat. Hunter is a true gentleman and he
is our Hero. Thank you for considering
him for this honor.”
The Hero of the Month award is sponsored by Kids Wish Network. Kids Wish
Network provides each Hero with a $100
gift card from Wal-Mart, a medal, a Hero
of the Month t-shirt, and a Hero of the
Month certificate.

Daughters of the Nile Work
Hard for Shriners Hospital
By: Illustrious Sir, Ron Kennedy
The Divan attended the Queen’s Ball
on Friday night, February 10th. The food
and music was as good as it gets!
I was pleased to learn how much work
and the amount of money these Ladies
raise.
In 2011, the Ladies of Al Ansar Temple
volunteered 3410 hours at Shriners
Hospital for Children, Greenville Unit, at
minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, that
would be $24,724.50. They received a
job well done!

Lollis says, “The best part about working
at Shriners Hospitals for Children —
Greenville is seeing the patients on a
regular basis. You build a relationship
with the kids and get to watch them
grow and mature into young adults.”
The Circus is c oming to town! Illus trious Sir Sher wood Kaiser and his
team have worked hard all year to bring a great Circus to us at a reasonable c ost for all attending. Let ’s get out and supp or t this exciting projec t, bring the neighb or s to a p er formanc e. I assure you it will b e a fun
time for all. Rememb er the Circus Mom and Dad progr am ($10.00 each).
You do not have to b e a Shriner or a Shrine Lady to b e a Circus Mom or
Dad.
A big thank you is in order for those who worked at the Temple for the
photogr apher sessions. All of these Nobles and Ladies worked together
and when they were needed for the suc c ess of the photo b ook. I do not
have a lis t of those that worked at the Clubs. The Nobles and Ladies that
I know that worked were: Fred Bagwell, Charles Roger s, Dick Flower s and
Barbar a Wilson. Sp ecial thanks goes out to Kathy Owens for her willingness to volunteer multiple days and Billy Owens for securing the Temple
a fter ever y photo session.
The suc c ess of the Shrine is determined by how we work together. We
have the greates t bunch of Shriner s in the world, but if we don’t work
and play together, we won’t have our fr aternit y or our hospit als for our
children. Let ’s jump in and work together. I have tr avelled to sever al Club
and Unit meetings rec ently. I notic e three things happ ening at those
Clubs or Unit s that are mos t suc c essful: (1) Ever yone seems to b e working together as a team, (2) the Clubs/Unit s have a lot of event s planned,
(3) There is a good mixture of work event s and fun event s planned. All
work and no play makes Johnny a dull b oy. All play and no work makes
Johnny a lazy b oy. Let ’s work for our Hospit als and plan some fun along
the way.
“The way a team plays as a whole determines it s suc c ess. You may have
the greatest bunch of individuals in the world, but if they don’t play
together, the Club won’t b e wor th a dime.” Bab e Ruth.
Thanks to ever yone who help ed with the Unit and Club Seminar. I trus t
that each one that attended went away with some use ful information. If
you have something that you think should b e included I am keeping a
folder of subjec t s for the 2013 Seminar.
Rememb er the Potent ates Ball is March 17. This is a great event to
honor our Potent ate and Lady Shirley. A full b allroom will have Lady
Shirley displaying those “miles and miles of smiles”.
We will leave no stone unturned in our search for new memb er s.
Rememb er the Rec order s Offic e is always op en to you.

There was a great turn out for the fine
meal and entertainment at the Crescent
Shrine Club for the Divan, Ladies &
Widows Night in October. It was so wonderful to see so many of our precious
widows there with us – they make everything so much more enjoyable. We are
so proud of our widows for they are a
very important part of the Crescent
Shrine Club. Each widow was presented
with a very nice gift from the Club.
We need to say a very special thank
you for the great food that Lady Gladys
Wright prepared for all to enjoy. Lady
Gladys and Lady Pat Benfield really had
the Club looking so beautiful for this
special night. Thanks to all who worked
and came out to make this a very special
night. Let’s all remember to pray for
each other and ask God for his Guidance
throughout the year and working
together it can be an successful year for
our Club.

The Most Precious Jewel
Prov. 3:15 — “She is more precious than rubies; and all the things
thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her”.
I can still remember when the Nurse handed me my first child
and the love and tenderness I felt as I looked at this gift from God.
My life changed forever that morning, for I knew the great
responsibility God had given me to love, care for, train and to be
an example for her to pattern her life after. We must always
remember that our children are the most valuable thing on the
face of the Earth, for they are the hope of tomorrow. The way
they turn out, will be according to our example for them.

I want to again thank Jerry Campbell
for a great job he did in 2011. I know it

you know, I lost my wife on January 6th,
after a three year fight with cancer. My
family and as well as myself would like to
thank all of you for the prayers, love and
support during that difficult time in our
lives. I heard someone say that if you
had one friend that you were rich, well, I
feel like a millionaire with all the love
that was shown to our family.
At our regular business meeting, we
voted to donate three bicycles with helmets to the Shrine Circus. We also made
some word changes in our Bylaws.
Our Club project this year will be a

There was a great turn out for the fine
meal and entertainment at the Crescent
Shrine Club for the Divan, Ladies &
Widows Night in October. It was so wonderful to see so many of our precious
widows there with us – they make everything so much more enjoyable. We are
so proud of our widows for they are a
very important part of the Crescent
Shrine Club. Each widow was presented
with a very nice gift from the Club.
We need to say a very special thank
you for the great food that Lady Gladys
Wright prepared for all to enjoy. Lady
Gladys and Lady Pat Benfield really had
the Club looking so beautiful for this
special night. Thanks to all who worked
and came out to make this a very special
night. Let’s all remember to pray for
each other and ask God for his Guidance
throughout the year and working
together it can be a successful year for
our Club.

Daughters of the Nile Work
Hard for Shriners Hospital
By: Illustrious Sir, Ron Kennedy
The Divan attended the Queen’s Ball
on Friday night, February 10th. The food
and music was as good as it gets!
I was pleased to learn how much work
and the amount of money these Ladies
raise.
In 2011, the Ladies of Al Ansar Temple
volunteered 3410 hours at Shriners
Hospital for Children, Greenville Unit, at
minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, that
would be $24,724.50. They received a
job well done!
Again in 2011, the Daughter’s of the
Nile combined contribution was
$1,608,322.17, bringing their total to a

Column
whopping $48,532,593.77.
If your Lady is a member, give her a
hug, if not next time you see a member,
be sure to give her a hug of thanks.
The last item I would like to mention is
that there are two, One-Million plaques
hanging on the wall at the Greenville
Unit of Shriners Hospital in honor of the
Daughter’s of the Nile.
Nobles, I know that we do a tremendous job of fundraising that is needed on
a daily basis, but the numbers listed
above are not shabby either!

team have worked hard all year to bring a great Circus to us at a reasonable c ost for all attending.

Each month, Shriners Hospitals for
Children® — Greenville recognizes one
of our patients as the Hero of the Month.
Hunter Jarman received the award for
January. For more than six years, elevenyear-old Hunter has been a patient at
Shriners Hospitals for Children —
Greenville where he is receiving expert
care for infantile idiopathic scoliosis, a
curvature of the spine. Hunter comes to
the hospital to be placed in a Risser cast.
A Risser cast is a plaster cast that is
applied from the collarbone to the bottom of the spine. When the cast is
applied, pressure is placed on the cast
causing the spine to straighten. When
the cast hardens, it holds the spine in
this position. Each cast progressively
straightens the patient’s spine. So far,
Hunter has worn 10 Risser casts.
Hunter was nominated by two
employees for the Hero of the Month
Award:
“I want to nominate Hunter Jarman for
Hero of the Month. Hunter is a bright,
quiet, but very well-mannered young
man. The family travels from Lynchburg,
Virginia, to South Carolina for numerous
clinic visits and to have Risser casts put
on under anesthesia. Hunter is always
very brave.”
“I would like to nominate Hunter
Jarman for Hero of the Month. When
Hunter is at the hospital he is so sweet
and never asks for anything. He is so
thankful when anyone in the cafeteria
gives him some pretzels and goldfish as a
treat. Hunter is a true gentleman and he
is our Hero. Thank you for considering
him for this honor.”
The Hero of the Month award is sponsored by Kids Wish Network. Kids Wish
Network provides each Hero with a $100
gift card from Wal-Mart, a medal, a Hero
of the Month t-shirt, and a Hero of the
Month certificate.

New Officers Installed at Jackson Shrine Club
The
POTENTATE'S
MESSAGE
Hello again to all,
COURIERS NEED NEW MEMBERS!
During Jackson Shrine Club’s January meeting, our newly elected Chief Rabban,
Noble Gary Parsons installed our newly elected Club Officers and Board of Directors
for the 2012 year. Pictured; Back row; Chief Rabban Noble Gary Parsons, Club Treasurer
Noble D. L. Phillips, Club Secretary Noble Frank Munn, Club Vice President, Noble
David Faile; Front row: Board of Director, Noble Darryl Usher; Board of Director, Noble
Bobby Powell; Board of Director, Noble Joe Morris and Club President Noble Kevin
Blackman. (Not pictured, Board of Director, Noble Pat Barton.)
Hejaz Nobles Carl Craig, Don Gambrell, Bill Cox and Arthur “Bud” Miller, Jr., are
members of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Greenville Couriers Unit.
Unit the next message, remember; “miles and miles of smiles.”
Yours in the Faith,
J. Ron Kennedy

February 2012
Greetings my fellow Nobles,
Currently, I’m in Charlotte, N.C., helping
plan for the 138th Imperial Session. The
event will definitely be one to remember as
Deputy Imperial Potentate Al Madsen and
Lady Jan prepare to take the next step in
leading our fraternity. Please start making
your travel plans to be in the beautiful city
of Charlotte in July!
Speaking of big events, I would like to
thank everyone who came out to support
the 87th East-West Shrine Game®. The
attendance for the game approached nearly 20,000, and doubled last year’s figures. I
was extremely impressed with how well
the Tampa Bay area and the local media
supported the game.
It was also great to see Nobles more
involved with the game; Imperial Sir Chris
Smith did a terrific job organizing the tailgating party. I would like to personally
thank Nick Thomas, Past Imperial
Potentate and Chairman of the East-West
Shrine Game Committee, and Executive
Director Harold Richardson for all their
hard work, which made this signature
event a successful one.
Earlier in the month, I had the pleasure
of attending the Bagdad Shriners
Installation of Officers Ceremony in Butte,
Mont. Their new Potentate, Sean Johnson,

is an impressive and motivated young man
who helped recruit several other new
members in their early 30s. Noble Johnson
is also a legacy member and I encourage all
of the temples to promote our new Legacy
Program. To learn more about the program, visit www.shrinersvillage.com.
My next stop was Omaha, Neb., to attend
a meeting of the Tangier Shriners. During
the meeting, I was very impressed with
how well the Tangier Shriners are working
together to organize fun activities and
increase membership. The temple also
graciously donated $500 to Patty’s
fundraising program.
I also traveled to Phoenix, Ariz., to visit El
Zaribah Shriners and attend the
Potentate’s Ball. During dinner on Friday
night, I had a chance to spend time with
Past Imperial Potentates Burton Oien and
John VerMaas and their Ladies, Sharon and
Jan. The next day, I went on a gorgeous
motorcycle ride just outside of Scottsdale
with 25 other Nobles. During the ride we
stopped at a well-known restaurant called
Greasewood Flats for lunch. There is truly
nothing better than Shriners, motorcycles
and good food.
Later in the month, I was in Tampa, Fla.,
for the Leadership Conference. In attendance were administrators, Chairmen and
Vice-Chairmen of the Boards of Governors
and other leaders from each of our 22 hospitals; executives from headquarters and
members of the Joint Board. Several of the
hospital representatives gave presentations and we discussed new ways to treat
more patients while lowering costs. We
also had the opportunity to see Leo
Burnett’s marketing presentation and I’m
proud to say it received a standing ovation.
If there is one thing I can guarantee, it is
that Shriners Hospitals for Children will no
longer be described as “the best kept secret
around.”
“Remember Why You Became a Shriner!”

The Northern Tool Box Project was a great success. A check for $3,000.00 was turned
into Hejaz Shrine Center for our hospital. Noble Benny Patterson was on hand for the
drawing at Northern Tools. Thanks to Northern Tools Store Manager, Steve Purpur for
all of their support over the past years. Without their support we could not do what we
do for our Hospital. Jean Workman was the lucky winner of the tool box give-away.

Mendelow, M.D., has joined the pediatric orthopaedic medical staff at
Shriners Hospitals for Children® —
