A: Communication is something that we always have to work at. Without knowing the age of your children, we are not able to give specific examples and suggestions, but there are a few basic techniques that are helpful no matter what age they are. 1. Be on the same level as your children. If they are sitting, sit down, so you can be eye to eye. 2. Eliminate distractions. Stop doing what you are doing and have them stop engaging in an ac‐ tivity also. 3. Use a calm and normal voice tone. Whether you are upset or not, calm yourself, so they can hear your words, not just your voice tone. Be aware of your body language. Sometimes we point our fingers to make a point or put our hands on our hips. Again, this gives an unspoken message to our children that gets in the way of their hearing our words. www.calendarwiz.com/antigocommunitycalendar Parenting, Home and Financial Education Parenting, Home and Financial Education Other Public Meetings and Announcements 4-H Club/Board Meetings Other Public Meetings and Announcements Langlade County Humane Society Advocates for Animals Meetings Thursday, December 8 6:00 pm Langlade County Safety Building All American Legion Meetings Antigo Junior Women’s Club All Veteran Group Meetings Wednesday, December 14 6:00 pm Schwartzendruber’s Supper Club Antigo Area Youth Hockey Association Meetings Antigo Bow Club Meetings Antigo Junior Women’s Club Meetings Antigo Farmer’s Market Meetings Antigo Garden Club Meetings Antigo Garden Club Thursday, December 1 5:30 pm Trudy Bula’s House Antigo Farmer’s Market Thursday, January 19 7:00 pm UW Extension Office Antigo Public Library Meetings Antigo Visual Arts Meetings Building a Healthier Langlade County Habitat for Humanity Meetings Knights of Columbus Meetings La Leche League Meetings Langlade County Historical Society Meetings Langlade County Humane Society Meetings Langlade County Ice Age Trail Meetings Northwoods Camera Click Meetings Northwoods Sportsmen’s Club Meetings Rotary Club Meetings Senior Citizen’s Club Meetings Triple R Riding Club Meetings Trout Unlimited Meetings Unified School District of Antigo Meetings Organization Spotlight: Building a Healthier Langlade County Building a Healthier Langlade County is a coalition of organizations whose goal is to help the community become the best that it can be! What is their purpose? Their goal is to encourage friends and neighbors to take a proactive approach to personal healthcare. How will they accomplish this? Their visibility in the community serves as a gentle reminder that adopting small changes will ultimately bring about beneficial results. Why are they concerned about your health? A healthier you means a healthier community. A healthier community may attract new business and could result in lower healthcare costs as well as reduce workplace absenteeism. Pursuing a healthier lifestyle is a win-win all around! If you do, follow these guidelines (NOTE: These directions apply to roasting your turkey ONE day before your meal): Wait about 20 minutes after removing turkey from the oven to allow the juices to distribute. NOTE: Be sure to follow safe procedures for thawing and roasting your turkey before you proceed to this first step. For more information, go to the USDA Let’s Talk Turkey site at: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Fact_Sheets/Lets_Talk_Turkey/index.asp Slice breast meat; legs and wings may be left whole. Place turkey in shallow containers; limit depth to less than 2 inches. Metal con-tainers cool faster than glass-type pans. Also refrigerate any broth saved for making gravy in shallow containers. NOTE: wash your hands with soap and warm water for about 20 seconds before you begin slicing your turkey. Refrigerate turkey, loosely covered. You can place loosely covered foods in the refrigerator while still warm; cover tightly when food is completely cooled. When serving your turkey the next day, the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline advises that cooked turkey may be eaten cold or reheated. To reheat your turkey, USDA gives the following recommendations: In the Oven– set the oven temperature no lower than 325˚F, reheat turkey to an internal temperature of 165˚F. Use a food thermometer to check the internal temperature, to keep the turkey moist, add a little broth or water and cover. In the microwave– cover your food and rotate it for even heating. Allow standing time., Check the internal temperature of your food with a food thermometer to make sure it reaches 165˚F. NOTE: if you’re planning to travel and bring the turkey, it’s safest and easiest to travel with it pre-cooked and cold. Carry it in an insulated cooler with lots of ice or frozen gel-packs to keep the cooler temperature under 40˚F. then reheat the turkey at your final destination. If you make your gravy the day before, refrigerate it in a shallow container. Bring gravy to a rolling boil when reheating it. After your meal, either freeze leftover turkey or plan to eat it within 3 to 4 days of the day it was originally prepared. Eat gravywithin 1 to 2 days of original preparation date. Once removed from the oven, the reheated turkey shouldn’t set at room temperature longer than 2 hours TOTAL time. For best safety and quality, avoid reheating and cooling turkey multiple times. NOTE: Discard any turkey, stuffing, and gravy left out at room tem-perature longer than 2 hours; 1 hour in temperatures above 90˚F. Tip # 1: if using a DIAL instant-read thermometer, insert it at an angle 2 to 2 1/2 inches deep through several slices of turkey. If using a DIGITAL instant– read thermometer, insert it at least 1 inch deep so it measures the center of a layer of slices. Tip # 2: It’s recommended that dressing be made as a separate dish and not stuffed in your turkey. Heat dressing until the center reaches 165˚F. Eat dressing within 1 to 2 hours of preparation.
