P age T wo Old St. Patrick’s Mass for Adoptive families Save the date “Joy of Adoption” Blessing Sunday, February 16 Written by John Aeby, adapted for use at Old St. Patrick’s Church. 5 p.m. Mass Join other families touched by the joy of adoption. Pot Luck Reception in the Church Hall Immediately following the Mass. For further information, contact Len Carnevale 707.784.0945 Loving and gracious, Heavenly Father, we have all experienced your rest and belonging through our own adoption into your fold, into your family, and we praise you as your own children. As Jesus touched and blessed the children who came to Him, we ask that your gentle, embracing touch of love and blessing be upon these, your beloved sons and daughters. May they grow in wisdom and grace. May they grow closer and feel ever more fully welcomed by you, O Lord. May they always feel safe, wholly belonging to their adoptive families. For these adoptive parents, siblings and relatives, we ask that they may love and guide their children with the unconditional love that you model and the wisdom that only you can provide. We ask also your blessing upon the birth families of those gathered today. May they know the peace of your comfort. May they rest assured of the legacy of hope they have given to the next generation. Finally we ask for your guiding hand upon all of us in this congregation, that we may be a foundation of support and encouragement for all families, continually affirming their belonging together in kinship within the family of God. We ask these blessings, Father, through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen!! 2 Visit our website at www.oldstpats.org. Follow Old St. Pat’s on: A wakenings Making New Memories By Rachel Lyons I don’t know if I stared at his chair Or folded the blankets at the end of the couch differently. I don’t know if I thought I heard his voice Or imagined it was him unlocking the garage door and stamping his feet on the landing. I guess he had already been gone for some time, Lying there, in the white room with a big window, Whose blinds were never really open… At least, that’s how I thought of it. I never saw it. I never saw him there in that place four hours of green and white mile markers away. I only saw spilled sugar on our dining room table as I sat in my chair, which was next to his chair. I licked my finger, stuck it to the crystals, and placed them on my tongue. They tasted sweet. And I thought of him. Like he was already gone. I have been thinking about my dad lately. I think of him often, but lately it has felt more intense. My dad, Dan Lyons (everyone called him ‘Doc’ as a nod to his career as a veterinarian), is someone who continues to influence my life even without being physically present. He Rachel Lyons passed away during my sophomore year of high school. He was eighty years old, and so his death was somewhat expected. He suffered a stroke while on a trip, stayed in the hospital for several weeks, and eventually came back to our hometown, where he lived in a nursing home for a short time before passing on. As I have grown up, the memories of my dad have grown a bit dim and fuzzy. I worry that one day I just won’t remember him. And this can feel awfully terrifying. However, I was on retreat a few weekends ago with JVC Magis, the program I am in through Loyola University. The weekend felt like a bit of a roller coaster, and one of the graces was a prayer experience the last morning of the retreat. In my prayer and conversation with my spiritual director, I realized I was seeking more intimacy with God. I have felt a bit removed from the Spirit and was not connecting God’s love to my work, my relationships, my day-to-day. So I entered into prayer with this desire to be closer, to not be afraid of accepting God in real and concrete ways. I imagined myself on the beach, listening to the waves coming in and washing back out. I felt that the water was God—constant, alive, dynamic yet calming— yet I was not close to the water. I kept my distance. I did not want to get up and move closer. I accepted this and 3 just sat as the waves came in and washed out. And then I remembered my desire for intimacy, for closeness. Instead of being alone on the beach, I imagined people I love sitting next to me, holding each person’s image for just a few seconds. As I went through this reel of family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues all sharing the beach with me, I stopped when it came to my dad. He sat next to me on the beach. This was kind of funny, as this is something we never did when he was alive. It felt new, strange, yet not unsettling. I imagined what I wanted to hear from him, what I needed to know—that he was proud of me, that he loved me, that he was always with me. I realized I could make new memories with him. My dad didn’t need to be far away if I didn’t want him to be. I can choose to take him with me on new adventures. As the whole scene faded away, the prayer ended. I am blessed to have this gift of love from my dad, and feeling his love could be a way to ultimately experience God’s love. I am getting there, but slowly. I am excited to think of my dad being close by…of God being close by, sharing moments of my daily life. I am excited to think he is proud of me, that he loves me, that he is always with me. “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love God, this God has revealed to us through the Spirit.” 1 Cor 2:9-10 Rachel Lyons is the Lead Organizer for the Mission for Social Justice at Old St. Patrick’s Church. DATE: Monday, March 3 DATE: Tuesday, March 4 SPEAKER: Sr. Helen Prejean Author of the acclaimed book Dead Man Walking and subject of the film by the same title. SPEAKER: Fr. Terry Keehan Pastor of Holy Family Parish in Inverness, IL TIME: 7 - 8:30 P.M. TIME: 7 - 8:30 p.m. PLACE: Old St. Patrick’s Church PLACE: Old St. Patrick’s Church Sister Helen Prejean has been instrumental in sparking national dialogue on the death penalty and helping to shape the Catholic Church’s newly vigorous opposition to state executions. She travels around the world giving talks about her ministry. She considers herself a Sister Helen Prejean southern storyteller. Sister Helen is a member of the Congregation of St. Joseph. She spent her first years with the Sisters teaching religion to junior high school students. Realizing that being on the side of poor people is an essential part of the Gospel she moved into the St. Thomas Housing Project in New Orleans and began working at Hope House from 1981 – 1984. During this time, she was asked to correspond with a death row inmate Patrick Sonnier at Angola. She agreed and became his spiritual adviser. After witnessing his execution, she wrote a book about the experience. The result was Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States. It became a movie, an opera and a play for high schools and colleges. Since 1984, Sister Helen has divided her time between educating citizens about the death penalty and counseling individual death row prisoners. She has accompanied six men to their deaths. In doing so, she began to suspect that some of those executed were not guilty. This realization inspired her second book, The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions, which was released by Random House in December of 2004. Fr. Terry Keehan is the Pastor of Holy Family Catholic Community in Inverness, Illinois, which is the seventh parish that he has been affiliated with. Previously, he was the Pastor of St. Matthias and Transfiguration Parishes in the Lincoln Square neighborhood of Sister Helen Prejean Chicago’s north side. Fr. Keehan was one of the Vocation Directors for the Archdiocese of Chicago from 1987-1996. Before entering the seminary he was a sales representative for Stuart Pharmaceuticals in Chicago. He earned Bachelors and a Masters degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he played varsity basketball for four years. His home parish is St. James and he attended St. Viator High School, both in Arlington Heights, Illinois. “And Jesus has this message for us: mercy. I think — and I say it with humility — that this is the Lord’s most powerful message: mercy.” Pope Francis Homily on March 17, 2013 Sr. Helen is presently at work on another book, River of Fire: My Spiritual Journey. 4 Visit our website at www.oldstpats.org. My name is Jamie Visser and I am interning in the Liturgy Department at Old St. Pat’s for the next few months. Currently, I am in my last semester as a Theology major at Dominican University in River Jamie Visser Forest. My great experience of ministry and student leadership at Dominican led me to OSP last Spring. A mentor of mine suggested that I come to this community for a great worshiping experience. The expectations he set for beautiful music, inspiring preaching, and a vibrant community were far exceeded! Join the Parent & Tots Group for a FREE class. Tuesday, February 25 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Cross Town Fitness 1031 W Madison in the West Loop Beat the cold as we free play, sing a long, explore a craft and wiggle our sillies out together! Recommended age: 6 months to 3 years. To R.S.V.P., or if you have any questions, contact Jenny Tole at [email protected]. Because of the wonderful embrace from the worshipping community, I inquired about what an internship might look like. Krista Kutz, Director of Liturgy, Old St. Pat’s, excitedly welcomed me in and is showing me the ropes on all things liturgy. As a student leader at Dominican, I have spent time leading retreats, small groups, and community outreach initiatives; but I have not had extensive experience with behind-the-scenes liturgy planning. It is exciting to be working with such gifted ministers who are helping me to expand my knowledge in this area of ministry. Four weeks in and I can tell you how to turn the sound system on, where the sacristy is, and how many hosts are in the tabernacle. More importantly, I am gaining a vision for liturgy. Seeing the talented Liturgy team craft themes, programs, and resources for the Lent season has been particularly inspiring. Both my respect and interest for this ministry have grown. What we see from the pews on Sunday is only the finished product. I am glad all of us are able to share in this exceptional experience of Church together. For those I have already met, thank you for welcoming me in. For those I have yet to meet, I cannot wait to share this time with you. I hope you feel blessed to be here. I know I do! Follow Old St. Pat’s on: P rograms On February 1, 2014 nearly 150 volunteers from the Frances Xavier Warde School gathered together on a snowy Saturday afternoon to help a fellow Catholic school. FXW students and their families headed to the West side of Chicago and spent an afternoon cleaning and organizing St. Malachy’s School. The Big Shoulders Fund coordinated this exciting event that brought together two schools that truly demonstrate the strength of Catholic education in this city. St. Malachy’s principal, Brigid Miller, welcomed the FXW group and shared that despite the economic and social challenges her students face, they are thriving and succeeding academically. Big Shoulders has played an important part in that success story. Big Shoulders Co-Chairman and Old St. Patrick’s own, Monsignor Velo, also addressed the group. Quoting an old African proverb, he said, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Second Collection Sunday, February 23 Our faith is lived in schools and parishes, soup kitchens and counseling centers, on street corners and in churches, where people of all backgrounds in every neighborhood of the Archdiocese of Chicago are served. Your gift to the Annual Appeal helps to sustain Catholic schools, religious education, ministerial formation, and initiatives for life, peace and justice. Through its support of Catholic Relief Services, the Appeal serves people worldwide, without regard for religious affiliation, whose lives are devastated by natural disasters, illnesses, wars and famines. On that blustery February day, FXW and St. Malachy’s went together. After three hours of hard work by volunteers of all ages, St. Malachy’s looked beautiful, fresh, and renewed. The FXW volunteers also left with a renewed spirit, thankful that they were able to make a small difference in the lives of their fellow students. FXW Preschoolers, Kaya and Evan, clean classrooms at St. Malachy’s. Fifth graders, Quinn and John, help out at the Big Shoulders Event. Visit and serve in Fabretto’s schools and facilities; coordinate gardening projects; help in the construction of school buildings (kitchens, playgrounds, etc.); help in the carpentry shop; participate in the forestry project by planting, pruning and clearing for new trees planted by Old St. Pat’s volunteers; or work with the women’s knitting cooperative. The trip’s flexible structure allows volunteers with specific skills, talents, and backgrounds to participate in various areas (e.g., health, education, sports, arts & crafts, language, business development, etc.). Where? Most of the time will be spent in Cusmapa, Nicaragua with travels to centers in Managua, Esteli, Somoto and Quebrada Hondo followed by two days of sightseeing in the colonial cities of Masaya and Granada, the Mombacho Cloud Forest, and Lake Nicaragua. When? Saturday, August 2 to Sunday, August 10, 2014 Old St. Pat’s Illinois Tornado Recovery Initiative On Saturday, January 25, 2014, members of the Old St. Pat’s Illinois Tornado Recovery Initiative and parishioners from Washington’s Bethany Community Church headed to Washington, Illinois, to spend a day helping our neighbors affected by the November tornadoes. Originally, the volunteers thought they would be spending the day outdoors sorting rubble or picking up tornado debris, but upon their arrival, they were pleasantly surprised to learn their jobs would take place indoors. The team worked at the home of Shelly and Eric. Both of them have various health problems, some of which are caused by the burning of tornado debris in the field across from their house. As a result of the negative reactions from the burning piles, they are forced to move away from the home in which they thought they would grow old. In order to get their house ready to sell, the volunteers painted their living room, hallway, and basement. Thanks to Alisa Anderson, Tony and Renee Lake, Brian Lynch, Patti O’Brien, and Foundations teens Meredith Anderson, Louis Finney, and Tess O’Brien, the job was finished in about three hours. Shelly and Eric were very appreciative of the work that was completed. We wish them all the best in the future. Why participate? The thrill of giving back the blessings you have received by helping others, while enjoying the camaraderie of other like minded folks. If you are interested in sharing the life-changing experience of serving the poor of Nicaragua through Fabretto, please join us at one of our information meetings listed above. Trip details, accommodations and logistics, volunteer expectations, and much more will be discussed. Reservations are on a first come first serve basis and are limited to the first 20 participants. A wise spiritual writer once said, “The Christian Tradition is built on two foundations: contemplation and action. Prayer to and contemplation on the message of Christ without action can result in mindless words. And action without being rooted in an appreciation of the mission of Christ is shallow. Each Lent the First Friday Club invites a speaker to focus us on the Christian Traditions that drive many of our lives. Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, IIII We are thrilled on the third day of Lent to have Rev Otis Moss inspire us with the love of Christ to act justly in our pain-filled communities and confusing world. After all, that is the purpose of the 40 days of Lent. Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, III has been the pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ since 2008. Trinity Church with more than 8,500 members located in the Washington Heights community on the South Side of Chicago, is the largest African-American congregation in the United Church of Christ denomination. After growing up in Shaker Heights, Ohio (a suburb of Cleveland), Rev. Moss graduated with honors from Morehouse College, Yale Divinity School, and completed a Doctor of Ministry degree from Chicago Theological Seminary. The work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the ministry of his father, Dr. Otis Moss, Jr., of Cleveland, have been primary mentors for his spiritual and faith formation. Rev. PLEASE HELP! As Old St. Patrick’s is Chicago’s oldest Catholic church and oldest public building, this sacred space is special to all who find their way here. Knowing how all of us appreciate and revere this sacred place, we ask for your help and cooperation in maintaining this historic church. Did you know: ➢ spilled beverages stain the carpet and marble floor? ➢ dropped food can be ground into the carpet and some of that food, especially gum, raisins, can never be completely removed? ➢ keys, pens, and metal toys have scarred many of the pews, and these pews will have to be removed, restored, and reinstalled? It is important that we know the consequences if we do not care for this magnificent church. Please help us preserve the beauty of this grand church for generations to come. Special Friends Mass Sunday, February 16 Please join us for our next Family Mass-for our Special Friends! The Mass celebrates with children and adults as well as their families who have special needs. We started this Mass because one of our members wanted a place for her family to attend Sunday services. The traditional church environment was not a comfortable place for her child who is sensitive to noises/sounds, large volumes of people, etc. We know there are others for whom this also is true. Our Special Friends Mass is intended to provide a setting where families can celebrate faith, community and Catholic traditions. There is no judgment. The Mass and environment are simple and interactive and offered for families with a special needs member. We are also in need of volunteers. If you would like to attend or volunteer, please contact Erin Downs at [email protected] , or 773.497.1307. This will help us better plan our Liturgy. Anthony liked the talented, well-educated Luke and personally recommended him to St. Francis, who then received him into the Franciscan Order. Luke, then only 20, was to be Anthony’s companion in his travels and in his preaching. Eventually, Luke took Anthony’s place upon his death. He was appointed guardian of the Friars Minor in the city of Padua. In 1239 the city fell into the hands of its enemies. Nobles were put to death, the mayor and council were banished, the great university of Padua gradually closed and the church dedicated to St. Anthony was left unfinished. Luke himself was expelled from the city but secretly returned. At night he would visit the tomb of St. Anthony in the unfinished shrine to pray for his help. One night a voice came from the tomb assuring them that the city would soon be delivered from its evil tyrant. After the fulfillment of the prophetic message, Luke was elected provincial minister and furthered the completion of the great basilica in honor of Anthony, his teacher. He founded many convents of the order and had, as Anthony, the gift of miracles. Upon his death he was laid to rest in the basilica that he had helped finish and has had a continual veneration up to the present time. adapted from www.americancatholic.org Mass Remembrances Commemorate a birthday, special anniversary, or the anniversary of a loved one’s death on the date of your choice (two weeks notice required to meet bulletin printing deadline).
