Just a Thought...
Whether you are a hockey fan or not,
it is fun when your hometown team
wins a championship series and title! I
never played hockey and I am certainly
no authority on the sport itself but you
have to admit, this Stanley Cup playoff
series was one of the most exciting set of
games we have witnessed in a long time.
It seemed like almost every game was
Fr. Tom Hurley
filled with great action and nail-biting
overtimes! Many of us stayed up late
into the night watching some of these playoff games to the
bitter end.
After the Blackhawks beat the LA Kings to make their way
into the Stanley Cup finals against the Bruins, a reporter from
WGN was outside church on that Sunday morning looking
for a quick interview. She asked me only one question:
“Father, in your opinion, is there a ‘spiritual’ dimension to
the Hawks and is it acceptable to pray for them to win the
Stanley Cup?” I said quite simply: “Sure, it is okay to pray
for them. From a Catholic perspective, it is easy: we believe
in the Trinity and if Patrick Kane can do another hat-trick,
we should be in good shape!” Not sure church authorities
would appreciate my theological comparison but what the
heck, I was put on the spot!
But for now, can’t we allow a team’s
victory to renew us and put a bounce
in our step as we celebrate a great
victory for the city we call home?
marathon bombing back in April. He was quoted as saying
sports are meant to bring people together in unity, not
divide people through violence. I couldn’t agree more.
The Stanley Cup will be traveling around the city and country
now for the next several months with the Blackhawks. The
flags will fly and the jerseys will be worn for the next few
days, perhaps weeks. At some point, the thrill will wear off
and life will move on. But for now, can’t we allow a team’s
victory to renew us and put a bounce in our step as we
celebrate a great victory for the city we call home?
May the God of victory, the God who renews us, and the
God who calls us into a deeper communion with each other,
help us to share that energy with each other as we continue
on our journey to be a blessing to each other in our home
town.
Enjoy these summer days. See you around!
Fr. Tom Hurley
Pastor, Old St. Patrick’s Church
P.S.: last Sunday, we had a record breaking 250 people
attend the 8 p.m. summer sunset liturgy, which is awesome.
Please join us and spread the word!
Maybe “hat-tricks” (by the way, that is when a player scores
three goals in a game) is not a great spiritual insight, but I
do believe there is something to be said for Unity and Joy.
When something like the Blackhawks’ victory happens, like
this past Monday night, it is a reason to celebrate and it has
the power to unify a city and her people. While I am writing
this column before the parade and celebration on Friday,
these past days have been a time of outward testimony of
people’s thrill and excitement for a city and the community
in which we live. Even if you are not a sports enthusiast,
wouldn’t we all rather see the good news of victory and
pride for a city than the other bad news that seems to
plague our news stations each and every night?
I read in the news last week that the winner of the Boston
Marathon, an Ethiopian runner, returned his medal to the
city of Boston in honor of those killed and injured in the

A WAKENINGS
How Happiness Happens
by Anthony de Mello, SJ
From Awareness: The Perils and Opportunities of Reality (pages 54-56)
We all depend on one another for all kinds of things, don’t we? We depend on
the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker. Interdependence. That’s fine!
We set up society this way and we allot different functions to different people
for the welfare of everyone, so that we will function better and live more
effectively — at least we hope so. But to depend on another psychologically
— to depend on another emotionally — what does that imply? It means to
depend on another human being for my happiness.
Think about that. Because if you do, the next thing you will be doing, whether
you’re aware of it or not, is demanding that other people contribute to
your happiness. Then there will be a next step — fear, fear of loss, fear of
alienation, fear of rejection, mutual control. Perfect love casts out fear. Where there is love there
are no demands, no expectations, no dependency. I do not demand that you make me happy; my
happiness does not lie in you. If you were to leave me, I will not feel sorry for myself; I enjoy your
company immensely, but I do not cling.
Anthony de Mello, SJ
I enjoy it on a non-clinging basis. What I really enjoy is not you; it’s something greater than both you
and me. It is something that I discovered, a kind of symphony, a kind of orchestra that plays one
melody in your presence, but when you depart, the orchestra doesn’t stop. When I meet someone
else, it plays another melody, which is also very delightful. And when I’m alone, it continues to play.
There’s a great repertoire and it never ceases to play.
COME HOME TO YOURSELF. OBSERVE YOURSELF …
SELF-OBSERVATION IS SUCH A DELIGHTFUL AND
EXTRAORDINARY THING.
That is what awakening is all about…
Think of the loneliness that is yours. Would human company ever take it away? It will only serve
as a distraction. There’s an emptiness inside, isn’t there? And when the emptiness surfaces, what
do you do? You run away, turn on the television, turn on the radio, read a book, search for human
company, seek entertainment, seek distraction. Everybody does that. It’s a big business nowadays,
an organized industry to distract us and entertain us.
Come home to yourself. Observe yourself… Self-observation is such a delightful and extraordinary
thing. After a while you don’t have to make any effort, because as illusions begin to crumble, you
begin to know things that cannot be described. It’s called happiness. Everything changes and you
become addicted to awareness.

Music Ministry —Transition
Dear Old St. Pat’s Members and Friends:
Thank you to so many of you for your kind words to me since the announcement of the
re-organization of Music Ministry at Old St Patrick’s Church. As most of you have already
heard, my role at Old St Patrick’s Church is changing. I will no longer be planning,
coordinating, playing and conducting music for Sunday Liturgies. That will be in the
capable hands of Dominic Trumfio and Laura Higgins. Rather, I will continue to remain involved in music for
weddings and funerals; and continue to be responsible for our three major concerts every year.
Deck The Hall
Our first concert coming up is our annual Deck the Hall Concert on Thursday, Friday
and Saturday, December 5, 6, and 7, 2013. Again, there will be wonderful arrangements
of familiar Christmas carols performed by Old St. Patrick Church’s Deck Concert Choir and
the Metropolis Symphony Orchestra; exciting arrangements of Christmas choral music;
some “new to most of us” Christmas music; and also delightful solo pieces. After a year’s
hiatus, we are thrilled to announce that Rodrick Dixon and Alfreda Burke will be joining us
and adding their spirited and inspiring voices to the program.
Our Deck the Hall Concert Choir rehearsals begin on Thursday, September 19, 2013 in the Church Hall
from 7 – 9 p.m. and continue most Tuesdays and Thursdays until the concert. There will be a special rehearsal
on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 4 p.m. with the orchestra. Auditions for this choir are scheduled on
Tuesday, September 17, 2013 from 5 – 8 p.m.
Too Hot To Handel: the Gospel Messiah
Our second concert of the year is the Auditorium Theatre’s production of Too Hot To
Handel: the Gospel Messiah scheduled during the Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend,
Saturday and Sunday, January 18 and 19, 2014. There are a total of 13 Monday
night rehearsals in Old St Patrick’s Church Hall from 7-9:15 p.m.. First rehearsal and group auditions start on
Monday, September 23, 2013. Come and join the Too Hot Choir in singing this spirited arrangement of
Handel’s “Messiah,” again with soloists Alfreda Burke and Rodrick Dixon.
Celtic Celebration/Siamsa na nGael Concert
Our third and final concert of the year is the Celtic Celebration/Siamsa
na nGael Concert at Chicago’s Symphony Center on Tuesday, March 11,
2014. Continuing our tradition of exploring the Irish Celtic connection with other
peoples, we will tell the story of the relationship with our Jewish brothers and
sisters through music, song, dance and narrative. Stay tuned for more details on “If it Weren’t For the Irish
and the Jews…” Choir rehearsals begin on Thursday, January 9, 2014 from 7 - 9:15 p.m. in the Church
Hall with auditions on Tuesday, January 7 from 5 -8 p.m. The rehearsals continue on most Tuesdays and
Thursdays until the special rehearsals with orchestra and soloists on Monday, March 10, 2014 in our church
from 6:30-10 p.m. and on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Symphony Center from 4 - 6:15 p.m.

As you can see, I am most fortunate to still be involved in music at Old St Patrick’s Church and I look forward to
these concert programs with you. For more information, or to schedule a rehearsal, please contact Bill Fraher

Connections and Harmony, Hope & Healing Host Memorial Service
A Helping Hand for a Hurting Heart
On June 8, 2013, Connections and Harmony, Hope & Healing
hosted the 2nd Annual Pediatric Memorial Service at the University
of Illinois Hospital – Chicago. It was a difficult, but beautiful day that
memorialized the children who had passed away at the UIC hospital.
Volunteers set-up the area and hosted the grieving families throughout
the memorial service. There was laughter and tears, photos of the
children, and a tree was planted in their memory. Harmony, Hope &
Healing’s, Marge, Tina and Anthony, soothed the mourners with their
beautiful music and voices. At the end of the service, balloons with
messages to the children were released to the sounds of “Somewhere
Over the Rainbow” — a fitting tribute to those children we have lost
along the way.
I would like to share the folloiwng “thank you” note:
Dear Old St. Patrick’s Church:
Thank you so much for your help and participation with our pediatric memorial service. We could not have
done it without you! We greatly appreciate your continued support and everything you do for us. You guys are
amazing!

St. Anthony
Zaccaria
(1502-1539)
At the same
time that Martin
Luther was
attacking abuses
in the Church,
a reformation
within the Church
was already
being attempted. Among the early
movers of the Counter-Reformation was
Anthony Zaccaria. His mother became
a widow at 18 and devoted herself to
the spiritual education of her son. He
received a medical doctorate at 22 and,
while working among the poor of his
native Cremona in Italy, was attracted
to the religious life. He renounced his
rights to any future inheritance, worked
as a catechist and was ordained a priest
at the age of 26. While in Milan, he
laid the foundations of three religious
congregations, one for men and one for
women, plus an association of married
couples. Their aim was the reform of the
decadent society of their day, beginning
with the clergy, religious and lay people.
Greatly inspired by St. Paul (his
congregation is named the Barnabites,
after the companion of that saint),
Anthony preached with great vigor in
church and street, conducted popular
missions and was not ashamed of doing
public penance.
He encouraged such innovations as
the collaboration of the laity in the
apostolate, frequent Communion, the
Forty Hours devotion and the ringing of
church bells at 3:00 p.m. on Fridays.
Prayer Requests: Names of the sick or
recently deceased are listed for one week
in the prayers of the faithful and two
subsequent weeks in the bulletin. Please
call Bernadette Gibson at 773.848.1868 to
add a name to the list.
His holiness moved many to reform
their lives but, as with all saints, it also
moved many to oppose him. Twice his
community had to undergo official
religious investigation, and twice it was
exonerated.
Mass Remembrances Commemorate
a birthday, special anniversary, or the
anniversary of a loved one’s death on
the date of your choice (two weeks
notice required to meet bulletin printing
deadline). Includes a Mass card. Please call
312.648.1021.
While on a mission of peace, he became
seriously ill and was brought home for a
visit to his mother. He died at Cremona
at the age of 36.
