Constantly fielding teams that are guard-oriented, this year’s team is no exception, with 17 players able to fill the role. In stark contrast to years past, this year’s offense will be more about creating opportunities than being creative on the floor. “We don’t really have offensive creators so we really need to be precise in the offensive execution,” says Girard. “If we do that, we will be good.” Returning to his coaching roots, Girard is still unsure what his team will be known for this year, but knows how they need to play to get wins. “I don’t know if we are going to score 80 points a game,” he says. “It would be nice to see but I don’t mind playing ‘ugly’ basketball. And by ‘ugly’ basketball, which is my brand, I mean low scoring, solid defense and making every open shot.” Opening the 2009-10 season with a CCAA conference game, Girard and his team are ready to go, with the head coach believing he has found a perfect mix of players. “I am looking forward to the wars,” closes Girard. “Any given night any team in our conference from one through 12 is capable of winning. As always, it will be interesting.” 2009-10 Opponents New to the Game With four strong additions in Brandie McCann, Aundria Anderson, Leniece Arevalo and Jessica Cannon, Girard will rely on the depth of his team to carry to success. “This year’s team has a good mix to them. We are as deep, if not deeper off the bench than we have been in the past few years, and it is this MacKenzie Mathias year’s true strength.” Girard will use the versatility of his newcomers on an as-needed basis, placing Anderson at post for her rebounding acumen while utilizing Arevalo’s skill in a shooting guard spot. Cannon will combine the skill of both positions to add to the team’s jump shot while boosting the defense, while McCann, who made an impact in the preseason, will contend for time at the point after a successful junior college stint. With the point guard position a question mark in Girard’s mind entering the season, he will look to a true freshman in Kala Amico to guide the team. “Kala is a really tough-minded player, but she is a different kind of point than we’ve had in the past,” says Girard.“She is more of a set-up passer than a scorer, so she will have to mature into the position.” The 2009-10 Team the floor (45-of-113) while going 13-of-31 beyond the arc, fifth on the team. Gantt also saw action in all 31 games last year with four starts, a number Girard hopes she will improve. “Whitney is going to have to carry a bigger load from last year,” he says. “She is capable of it since her mentality is more of a team leader.” Proving her worth after only one year, Mathias will be looked upon to lead as a shooting guard, a spot she filled nicely in the 2008-09 season after grabbing 24 starts in 31 games played. Mathias was dominant in three-point shooting, going 37-of-105 to lead the Toros, placing her 10th in the CCAA. Mathias was joined at the top in long-range shooting by fellow freshman Montalvo, giving coach Girard plenty of returning skill beyond the arc. “Mac is a little bit of a gunslinger,” states Girard.“There is not a shot she is afraid to take and she is a very good shooter.” Another senior, Houston will return in her final season to start in the power forward position, anchoring her team’s defense after grabbing 167 boards in her junior year, a vast improvement over 33 rebounds in her first year in Cardinal & Gold. Houston also put her 6’0’’ frame to good use, tallying 16 blocks, good for second on the team. “Barbara is going to play huge for us, and she needs to,” Girard says optimistically. “Her post position needs to give us double points and double rebounds. We think Barbara is going to really emerge this year.” Not wasting her 67 offensive rebounds last year, Houston shot 47.1% from the floor, draining 56-of-119 attempts from the field. Making only one start but seeing action in all 31 games last year, Montalvo hit the floor as the team’s go-to ‘sixth man,’ creating opportunities and following through with 139 points and 25 steals. “Kayla will have to play a bigger role this year than she ever has before,” says Girard. “She is the man on the perimeter and in the past has been more of a sparkplug off the bench when we needed scoring.” Women’s Basketball 2009-10 Season Outlook Women’s Basketball 2009-10 Toro Sports Network Cal State Dominguez Hills Athletics is proud to offer LIVE Internet telecasts of ALL home women’s basketball matches. NCAA II West Regional Participant Van Girard begins his 22nd season at the helm of the Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball program. The winningest women’s basketball coach in the history of the school and three wins away from becoming the overall winningest basketball coach at CSUDH, Girard has put his trademark stamp of hard-nosed pressure defense to go along with an up-tempo style of play on the Carson campus. Since Girard took over the reigns in 1988, he has turned the Toros into one of the top NCAA Division II programs on the West Coast. He has led CSUDH to three total CCAA titles including the recent 2009 title, three runner-up finishes and five 3rd-place finishes in one of the strongest conferences in the country. He has also guided the Toros to the CCAA Tournament nine times while earning five NCAA West Region playoff berths, including the 2008-09 season in which the Toros lost a 66-65 heartbreaking buzzer-beater to UC San Diego. Girard’s record speaks for itself. He is atop the school’s all-time coaching record list, compiling a 285-283 mark en route to being named the CCAA Coach of the Year five times, including a stretch of three-consecutive years (1994-96). On March 2, 2007, Girard achieved his milestone 250th win in an 59-50 victory over San Francisco. Girard likes to play a very up-tempo style of basketball while incorporating his trademark man-to-man pressure defense. The opposition knows to expect a swarming high-pressure defense and a creative offense when they face Girard’s squad. Known as a teacher of fundamentals, Girard has coached one All-American, six All-West Region players, three CCAA Conference MVPs and 41 all-conference players. Prior to Cal State Dominguez Hills, Girard served as Assistant Athletics Director at Lynwood High School and the girl’s varsity basketball coach for ten years. During that span, he compiled an incredible 230-48 career record for an amazing winning percentage of .827. In creating a dynasty at Lynwood, Girard led his team to 10straight playoff berths, seven-consecutive San Gabriel Valley Conference championships, two CIF championship appearances and two Southern Regional State playoff championships, with 1986 culminating in a CIF title. During his tenure at Lynwood HS, he twice was honored as the Los Angeles Times “4A Coach of the Year.” Even more impressive, Girard was honored as the California and CIF “Coach of the Year” in 1986. Fifteen players under his tutelage earned NCAA Division I or Division II athletic scholarships at the collegiate level. In a March 5, 2004, ceremony held at the Pyramid on the campus of Cal State Long Beach, Girard was forever immortalized for his achievements at the prep level. Along with Southern California coaching notables Ron Palmer (LB Poly), Gary Prestesator (San Dimas HS) and Cliff Warren (El Segundo, Rolling Hills, Redondo and Peninsula High Schools), the CSULB alumnus was inducted into the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (SCIBCA) Hall of Fame for the legacy he left at Lynwood HS. While at CSUDH, Girard has had a heart for the local community. He works closely with the local Boys & Girls clubs providing free coaches and team clinics. He also works closely with the City of Carson Parks and Recreation Department, as well as the local Carson-Gardena YMCA in providing more opportunities for girls basketball. Girard is a 1977 graduate of Long Beach State, earning his bachelor’s degree in History. He resides in Norwalk and has two daughters, Jenell and Britnie. In her career, Marquez played in 82 of 104 games in Cardinal & Gold, including 14 contests in 2004 during which she suffered a season-ending injury in the Toros’ 13th game. A consummate example of hard work on the floor and in practice, Marquez increased her points per game, steals per game, and minutes per game averages every season as a Toro. Before her career as a Toro ended in 2004, Marquez culminated 439 points (5.4 p/g), 108 steals, 130 rebounds and 17 blocks. Marquez often drew praise from Girard on the floor, which in her senior year led to her being named a co-captian. Said coach Girard in 2004, “[Marquez] is the best leader we’ve had in a long time and basically we’re going to see how far ‘Mo’ goes. She’s doing everything I could ever ask in terms of leading, defending, hustling, the overall great effort she brings every day ... I couldn’t be any more pleased.” Now on the sidelines Marquez looks to echo her efforts as a player through her coaching with a new generation of Toro basketball players. As a coach, Monique’s day-to-day duties include coordination of recruiting new & returning players, planning of road trips, fundraising and general office work. As a former point guard Monique is also instrumental in the development of the Toros guards, both in recognizing talent and helping the girls to maintain their skills. Not a stranger to excellent ball-handling, Marquez consistently was on the low end of team turnovers and has much to offer in her coaching abilities. In addition to her Toro coaching duties, Marquez is a youth and high school basketball official, and is currently employed by the Long Beach Unified School District as a P.E. equipment manager for the California Academy of Math and Science (C.A.M.S.). Previously, Marquez spent time coaching for the Pomona Valley YMCA Youth Basketball Program, coaching youth from 5-17, and oversaw the basketball program as the Basketball Coordinator for the entire YMCA. A southern California native, Marquez grew up in Rialto where she attended Eisenhower High School. In her three years of varsity play for the Eagles, she twice helped lead the team to Citrus Belt League titles (1998, ‘99) and was named a league MVP. While there she tallied a game high 28 points and holds the all-time record for most steals in a game. Marquez, who earned her degree in Liberal Studies in 2005 from CSUDH, resides in Hacienda Heights. Brittney Blankenship 1st Season • Assistant Coach Los Angeles, CA • Cal State Dominguez Hills ‘09 (Business Administration) After a standout four-year career (2004-07, 08-09) as a Toro under the direction of coach Van Girard, Brittney Blankenship begins her first year on the sidelines as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball program. In her career, Blankenship saw action in 108 games with 100 starts on the floor. As a true freshman in 2004, Blankenship played in all 27 of the Toros’ games before going on to play in all but three opportunities over her career. In her career, Blankenship averaged 29.7 minutes and 8.9 points per game from the point guard position, helping to lead the Toros to a 69-42 record, including three appearances in the NCAA West Region tournament and the 2008-09 CCAA Championship title. In the title game versus Humboldt State on March 3, 2009, Blankenship tallied 18 points and went 5-of-5 from the line to lead the Toros to a 74-69 victory, also solidifying herself as one of CSUDH’s all-time best line shooters. In her senior year, Blankenship went 83-93 from the line for a .892 percentage, placing her second on the Toros’ all-time best season list. The mark was not only a CCAA best but also 12th in the nation at the end of the season. No stranger to being a team leader, Blankenship drew constant praise from Girard, earning her the coveted point guard position. Said Girard in 2008 after Brittney returned to play from an injury in 2007, “Sometimes a loss pushes you to another level maturity wise, and Brittney losing last year exposed her to coaching thoughts instead of just her own perspective. She finally saw the big picture.” Blankenship will show her skill from the bench as she works with the team’s guards on individual skill development in a one-on-one setting. A southern California Native, Blankenship was born and raised in Los Angeles, before moving to Palmdale where she attended Palmdale High School. In her four years of play for the Falcons, she helped lead them to three league championships and one CIF Southern Section semifinal appearance. With a strong commitment to equitable access in higher education for all and with more than three decades of teaching and administrative experience, Dr. García took the helm as President on August 1, 2007 and is poised to lead the highly diverse faculty, staff and student body at CSU Dominguez Hills. An urban university located in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County, CSU Dominguez Hills offers 45 baccalaureate degrees and 21 master’s degrees. Enrollment exceeds 12,000 students, of which about 2,000 enroll via distance education opportunities. The student population is among the most ethnically and culturally rich in the nation. President García brings with her a commitment to multicultural alliances and believes that these coalitions strengthen not only an individual’s self-development and opportunities, but also strengthen institutions and communities. President García came to Dominguez Hills after serving from 2001 to 2007 as president of Berkeley College in New York and New Jersey, where she championed the cause of access with success—the obligation to make the attainment of a college degree a realistic goal for all who strive to succeed. Under her leadership, the college began offering full academic programs in an online format. Over 14 bachelor’s and 14 associate’s degrees were approved, including Criminal Justice, International Business, Fashion Marketing and Management, Health Information Management and Human Resources. The college also made a number of capital improvements during her tenure, including the construction of new facilities as well as the modernization and renovation of existing facilities. Prior to Berkeley, she was at Arizona State University (1997-2001), holding a variety of positions there, including Vice Provost for Academic Personnel, Associate Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Associate Director of the Hispanic Research Center at Arizona State University, and Tenured Professor in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department. She has also held the post of Dean of Students at Hostos Community College of City University of New York (1979-1986). An educator foremost, President García’s research has concentrated on equity in higher education and its impact on policy and practice. She has written extensively and is a much sought-after speaker at national and international conferences.Among the books she has authored are Succeeding in an Academic Career, which focuses on how faculty of color can succeed in higher education; Assessing Campus Diversity Initiatives (co-published); and Transforming the 1stYear of College for Students of Color (with Laura I. Redón and Dawn Person). Most recently, she was a keynote speaker at the Association of American Colleges and Universities’ Annual Conference, and presented at the American Council on Education’s 3rd Summit for Women of Color Administrators in Higher Education. She was panel moderator for “Connecting Higher Education to Industry and Marketplace Needs” at the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Annual Conference and delivered the keynote address at the University of San Diego, Community College Leadership Development Initiatives Summer Academy. As the Director of Athletics, Guillen secured several new corporate partners, updated CSUDH’s corporate sponsorship with Enterprise Rent-A-Car, hired CSUDH’s new volleyball and baseball coaches, oversaw the appointment of a new Faculty Athletics Representative, raised necessary funds for new baseball and softball bleachers, sold venue advertising, centralized and updated concessions, and formulated future fundraising ideas which have substantially increased CSUDH Athletics funding beginning in the 2006 season. Additionally, his efforts were instrumental in the annual Toros Scholarship Golf Classics, which consistently have increased their profits over the past four years under Guillen’s leadership. Guillen serves on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Carson, as well as on both the CCAA Administrative and CCAA Championship Committees. He is also an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association, was named an NCAA Regional Advisory Committee member for women’s soccer and appointed the CCAA Sports Information liaison, and most recently was selected for a 3-year term on the Baseball West Region Committee. Guillen has been an integral part of an Athletics Department that has captured two NCAA Division II men’s soccer National Championships (including 2008), hosted the NCAA Division II Final Four women’s soccer championship, and first- and second-round NCAA Division II men’s soccer championships. In addition, Guillen initiated the negotiation process that brought the Home Depot Center to the Carson campus. On the academic front, the overall student-athlete GPA has increased from 2.63 (04-05) to 2.67 (05-06) to 2.73 (06-07) to 2.78 (07-08) to 2.90 this past year under Guillen’s leadership, an all-time high, while 76 student-athletes made the CSUDH Athletics spring 2009 honor roll, 61 were recognized by the NCAA as part of the 22nd Annual National STUDENT-Athlete Day, and 27 Toros were named to the 2008-09 CCAA’s All-Academic list. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. CCAA institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s conference-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 148 NCAA Championships (100 men, 48 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10). During 2008-09, CCAA captured team national championships in men’s soccer (Cal State Dominguez Hills) and men’s golf (Sonoma State). Cal Poly Pomona was national-runner up in men’s basketball and Cal State San Bernardino finished second at the NCAA Championships in women’s volleyball and men’s golf. CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, nine softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball national championships as well as 13 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 70 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 12th year as the Commissioner. 2009-10 Opponents The CCAA North to South: Humboldt State - Lumberjacks Chico State - Wildcats Sonoma State - Seawolves Cal State East Bay - Pioneers * San Francisco State - Gators Cal State Stanislaus - Warriors Cal State Monterey Bay - Otters Cal Poly Pomona - Broncos CSU San Bernardino - Coyotes CSU Dominguez Hills - Toros Cal State L.A. - Golden Eagles UC San Diego - Tritons * Provisional Member The 2009-10 Team Men’s Soccer Sonoma State Softball Cal State Monterey Bay # Humboldt State $ # - Tournament Champion | $ - Regular Season Champion CCAA Universities Women’s Basketball California Collegiate Athletic Association 2009 Toro Volleyball The 2009 Team 2009 Opponents 2008 Season Review Volleyball History Dominguez hills Women’s Basketball 2009-10 Toro Traditions of Excellence Cal State Dominguez Hills is an NCAA Division II institution that competes in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Although CSUDH is one of the younger schools in the conference, we are one of the most athletically competitive and honored schools in the CCAA, with 26 conference titles and five national championships to date. The Athletics Department was founded in 1968 with the inception of the school’s first intercollegiate team in men’s golf, which was founded by the Toros’ first ever Athletics Director, Dr. John Johnson. “Dr. J,” as he’s affectionately known, continues his role to this day as the head coach of the men’s golf team and currently is the oldest active coach in the NCAA - a true living legend, indeed! In a letter dated April 1969, Chairman of the 2nd Ad Hoc Committee on College Symbols Thomas S. Bullock announced that the CSUDH student body voted on Cardinal and Gold as the school’s colors, and a bull to replace the existing “Gypsy Dancer” as its new mascot. The bull, since referred to as the Toro, was derived from the “Dominguez Family history of cattle ranching,” and will also “be well adapted to team symbols, etc.” Luckily for both CSUDH and our newly-adapted school mascot, the volatile nature of a bull’s temperament deterred Chairman Bullock from keeping a live example on campus.
