He has played varsity since his freshman year,” said CAL head baseball coach, Tim Brown. “Dylan has done everything we’ve asked of him. He has met all of our expectations and has exceeded them.” Dylan’s father, Rick Sexton, talked about Dylan’s passion for baseball at an early age. He commended Dylan for his hard work and talked about the wonderful resources Dylan has been afforded by his coaches over the years. Dylan shared a bible verse from the book of Hebrews at the signing ceremony. “This verse makes me think back to all of the coaches who have put their time into developing me as a player. So many people have encouraged and helped me. I’m so thankful for my teammates. Some of these guys are like brothers to me,” said Dylan. Sexton also made an official visit to Gardner Webb University before deciding to attend Bellarmine. “Overall, Bellarmine is the best fit for me. I am getting the best education in the state and I get to continue to live out my dream of playing college baseball. I feel that God is leading me to be a light and make a difference at Bellarmine University,” said Dylan. Sexton was named to the All-Region team and All-District team his junior year. He plans to double major in Business Administration and Exercise Science. 6 CAROLINE RASSENFOSS SIGNS TO PLAY VOLLEYBALL AT WAKE FOREST Congratulations to Caroline Rassenfoss who signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at Wake Forest. CAL Director of Athletics, Brad Morgan opened the signing ceremony by commending the CAL volleyball team for their tremendous run this year. The Lady Centurions advanced to the Regional Semi-Finals and finished the season ranked #9 in the state. “We are in one of the toughest regions in the state. I am so proud of Caroline and the entire team for what they accomplished this year. Caroline is an amazing athlete and a wonderful representative of this school,” said Morgan. Rassenfoss’ club volleyball coaches praised Caroline’s work ethic and raw ability. They talked about her willingness to put in the hours needed to play Division I volleyball. “I chose Wake Forest because of their strong academics and the excellence of their sports programs. I love the campus, the area, the size of the school and the overall atmosphere,” said Rassenfoss. Caroline has received numerous awards for volleyball including: CAL Best Offensive Player (2014), All-District (2013-2015), All-Regional (2012-2015), First Team All-State (2013-2015), AA Player of the Year 2015, All-American Honorable Mention 2015, Top 100 Senior Aces, 2015 and AVCA Player of the Week (October 19-25, 2015). Caroline thanked her teammates, coaches and parents for investing their time to take her to countless practices and tournaments. She is undecided in her major and looks forward to playing for the Demon Deacons next fall. CALATHLETICS@CENTURIONAD 7 JOY LEFORS’ PERFECT COOKIES FOR PERFECT THURSDAY Some have heard about them. Some have seen them. Others have tasted them. If you are curious what I’m talking about, it’s Joy LeFors’ famous chocolate chip cookies. I talked with Joy about how she got into baking these covenanted treats for the CAL football team and how it all started. When did you first start making your chocolate chip cookies? I began making them in 2003 when Stefan started for UL. We were one of the only married couples, and I thought it would be nice for players who didn’t have any family in town to get a special treat. Stefan would pass them out the night before the game when the players would get to the hotel or were boarding the plane as a snack. Did you make cookies for the entire team? No, I just made them for his offensive line for protecting him, his receivers for catching his throws, the kicker and some special defensive players. Did everyone get the same thing? I baked 7 cookies for each player and baked special cookies for Stefan. I would give him 17 cookies (Stefan’s jersey #) made of 2 Ritz crackers with peanut butter in the middle and then dipped in chocolate. Have you been baking cookies this whole time? No, I took a break from the baking when Stefan played in the NFL and in Canada. I picked back up making them once he started coaching at CAL in 2010. Stefan came up with the idea to give them out only if they win the week before. Sometimes I want to go ahead and make them if they’ve played hard and just happened to lose, but he vetoed it. How long does it take you to bake? It usually takes about 1 day. Wednesdays are my baking days and it takes me around 4 hours to bake and then bag them up and tie a red bow on. That’s a long time to bake! It is, but I enjoy doing it. I take my “ baking days” to pray for the team, my husband, the other coaches and for everyone’s safety during the game. How do you become one of the famous Joy LeFors’ cookie recipients and when do you give them out? Cookies are passed out after “ Perfect Thursday” practice. You have to play on the varsity football team, coach, have taught one of my kids, drive the trailer for the football team, or be one of Stefan’s coworkers. I do also make them for Luke’s football team. They get cookies whether they win or lose. Any chance we can get the recipe? Nope. I’ve had UL players and some CAL moms try to get it out of me. All I can say is just use a lot of butter! 8 Christian Academy Softball players spent a few hours on Thursday at Trinity Presbyterian Church packing Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes into larger containers. These boxes will be shipped and delivered to children across the globe, spreading the Good News. Within two hours, the team had packed all of the shoeboxes that had been dropped off over 1,700 shoeboxes!! Thanks, ladies, parents, and coaches, for your service! Don’t forget about CAL Softball’s Flapjack Fundraiser at Applebee’s in Middletown on Saturday, December 5th from 8-10 am. For only $7, you can get all-you-can-eat pancakes served by your favorite CAL Softball player! 9 News From the Underground #IMPACT “Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” Ephesians 5:20 ESV This week is a short week for school but we will hold regular session for all of our Student Athletes (see schedule below). I love this time of year not only because of all the time spent with family and all of the good food but also because we get a bunch of our Alums back in for workouts. I think it is great for our current athletes to train alongside our alumni that have gone on to play at the next level. They get to hear firsthand what it is like in college as a student athlete. I want to take time this week to THANK everyone for their support of our program. It all starts with our AD Brad Morgan, our Asst. AD Jennifer Roberts and the best Athletic Department in the state (Cora, Holly and Stefan). It carries on with our Head Coaches and their coaching staffs all the way down to our Student athletes and their parents. I am truly blessed and I am very thankful for the opportunity I get to be a part of the lives of the Student Athletes at CAL. I look forward to a strong finish to 2015 and the possibilities that lay ahead in 2016 Can’t Make it to the Game? CALATHLETICS@CENTURIONAD 10 On November 16, the boys played the Warriors of Christian Academy of Indiana. The Centurions led the entire game against the Warriors with #42, Luke Leeper, being the lead scorer with 12 points. The final score was Centurions 43 and Warriors 31. The team as a whole played really hard and they look forward to many more victories together. Go CAL! We had a very busy weekend playing in the Titans Hoop Challenge in Simpsonville which started on Friday. Saturday was an intense day of play which eventually lead to the team running out of gas in the last game! The final results were 3 wins/3 loses. We ended the evening with a night of Meet the Centurions. What a fun evening and thanks to all who made it happen! This past week, our 7th grade boys basketball team scored two victories in two away games. On November 16th, our boys traveled over the river to take on Christian Academy of Indiana. In a lopsided victory, we pulled away early and coasted to a 49-19 win. Pressure defense and deflections led to quick fast breaks. The Centurions were led by Stephen Wearsch's 10 points and 4 rebounds and Brandt Babin's 6 points and 7 rebounds. Tyler Lagestee, Cole Thompson, and Chandler Strong each chipped in 6 points. Brayden Daniels dished out 3 assists. On Thursday night, November 19th, we took on Shelby County West. In a much tighter game, our boys overcame some early poor shooting and scored an eight point victory, 40-32. West, always a power team in the state playoffs, led at intermission by a score of 16-14. Coach Lagestee and Coach Thompson must have struck a nerve with their halftime talk because the second half was all Centurions. Sparked by Cole Thompson's two three pointers, we raced ahead and outscored them by ten down the stretch. Caleb Hawley pulled down 5 rebounds and dished 3 assists. Cole Thompson led all scorers with 10 points. Brandt Babin and Stephen Wearsch each scored 8 points and ripped 7 rebounds. Conner Haun added 5 points. Please come out and watch your high flying 7th grade team play tonight, Nov.23, at home in the red gym versus South Oldham at 6:30pm. 11 CAL 6TH GRADERS TOP LOUISVILLE COLLEGIATE The CAL 6th grade basketball team held Louisville Collegiate to 25% shooting and outrebounded them in a 41-29 victory in a game played Saturday at Whitefield Academy. Falling behind early, the Centurions rallied by attacking the basket with a vengeance, erasing an early 6-3 deficit to take a 16-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. CAL led 22-12 at the half and cruised the rest of the way to victory, leading 35-20 by the end of the third quarter. Conner Carr led CAL scorers with 17 points while collecting six assists. Garrett Guthals, Tommy Ott, Adam Ballard, and Caden Hauser all scored four. Luke Heuke, Matthew Mauzy, and Camden Farmer each chipped in two points. Matthew Mauzy led CAL rebounders with six while Jacob Price and Will Thompson each had five. On Thursday, a late third quarter three point goal gave Shelby West a lead at the buzzer they never relinquished in defeating CAL, 39-37. CAL took an early 11-6 first quarter lead, but a stifling Shelby West press forced the Centurions into 26 turnovers for the game. CAL led at halftime, 20-17, but couldn’t hold the lead despite shooting 57% from the field in the second half. Leading CAL scorers was Conner Carr with 18 points, five assists, and six rebounds. Adam Ballard and Will Thompson both scored four points, while Garrett Guthals, Tommy Ott, and Caden Hauser all had two. Collin Hodges added one point on a free throw. CAL outrebounded Shelby West, 32-22, with Jacob Price and Adam Ballard leading the way with seven. Conner Carr had six rebounds, and Tommy Ott collected five. The Centurions are now 4-1 in league play and 6-4 overall. They next play South Oldham Middle School at 5:30 on Monday, their last game before the Thanksgiving break. They will then host Shelby County East in the CAL Red Gym on Monday, November 30, at 5:30.
