Christian Academy of Louisville August 15, 2016 www.caschools.us/centurion-athletics CAL Cross Country Goes to CAI This past Saturday, August 13th, the running Centurions ran their first race at Christian Academy of Indiana. The “Warrior 4 Miler” is a road race infamous for its steep hills and hot weather, but the team toughed it out. The team makes the annual trip to Albany, Indiana to support CAI’s student scholarship program as well as the school system’s running program’s. As their season’s looking bright and many new runners have joined, this was a fun way to start the season; however, they’re looking forward to their first official cross country meet in J-Town next week. With a number of early penalties, it was a slow start for the Centurions, punting with just under 5 minutes remaining in the first quarter. (photos on pg. 4) But it didn’t take long for the game to turn around. #83 Gage Geren blocked a pass and #3 Brandt Babin brought in the first touchdown. Grace led the CAL team placing 29th in the field of 92 players shooting an 18 hole total 93. It was a long 8 hour day for the golfers that included a rain delay and very wet conditions. The players finished their round right at sunset! Maddie played well finishing 38th overall in her first high school tournament. Next up for Ashton, Maddie and Grace was the Henry County Invitational August 1st. Maddie shot an impressive 87 which placed her 5th in the field of 52 players while Grace finished in 9th place with a 91. On August 4th, Ashton, Sarah, Corrie, Isabelle, Lauren and Grace played a 9 hole match at Nevel Meade Golf Course against North and South Oldham HS teams. The links style course proved a challenge as CAL came in 3rd (233) with North Oldham placing 1st (213) followed by South Oldham (223). The 4 lowest scores by Grace, Lauren, Ashton, and Sarah contributed to the CAL team total. Next on the schedule was Oldham County HS on August 9th held at Oldham County Country Club. The team showed great improvement lowering their score by 21 strokes (212) and winning their first match! Grace Walker was medalist shooting a 9 hole total 40 which included a birdie on the par 5 seventh hole! Ashton, Lauren and Isabelle rounded out the winning team score. As Moore kicks off, Geren catches the ball running it down field. #20 Brayden Daniels takes it to the end zone for another Centurion touchdown. Then it’s Wilson scoring on the 2 point conversion. In the 3rd quarter Daniels gets a pick 6 and scores, and Games steps in to quarterback, passing to #3 Babin for the extra 2 points. #22 Conner Haun brings in another touchdown and the extra point is, again, good. As Coach Sabatino says,”It’s a tackle party, bring your friends!” Outstanding knock-downs by #22 Conner Haun, #23 Conner Carr, #35 Adam Ballard, and #27 Andrew Dupps. Stepping in to play receiver with some fantastic blocking was #11 Joshua Spainhour. Final score: CAL 37- Moore 6 6 7TH GRADE FOOTBALL OPENS THE SEASON WITH A WIN On Saturday, August 6, 2016, the 7th grade football team kicked off the season in Elizabethtown against the Trojans of James T. Alton Middle School. Connor Carr received the opening kickoff and returned the ball to the Trojans 45 yard line. On the opening play from the line of scrimmage Quarterback Robert Ehrenborg handed the ball off to Carr for a 20 yard gain. Two plays later Carr scampered in from 14 yards out for the game’s first score. CAL took an early 6-0 lead with 4:04 to go in the opening quarter. On the ensuing kickoff by Jonah Mattingly, Luke Heuke and Jeffrey “Deuce” DeBellis combined to knock the ball loose and Heuke recovered the ball at midfield. Ehrenborg then went to the air and connected with Caleb Thompson for 24 yards that brought the ball down to the 26 yard line. CAL then went back to the running game which featured Carr and Thompson taking turns carrying the ball. The CAL offense struck again when Ehrenborg aired it out to Adam Ballard from about 5 yards out for another touchdown. CAL led after the first quarter 12-0. CAL kicked the ball off to start the 2nd quarter. After a couple of short gains by the Trojan offense, Matthew Mauzy made his presence felt when he dropped the Trojans ball carrier for a 6 yard loss. Facing 4th down and 10 yards, Braeden Davis got in the back field and put a lot of pressure on the Trojans quarterback and forced an incomplete pass. The Centurions took over on downs. Thompson picked up 11 yards and brought the Centurions to midfield on CAL’s first offensive play of the 2nd quarter. Carr then took the handoff and blasted through the line and out ran everyone for a 43 yard touchdown run to pay dirt. This extended CAL’s lead to 18-0. Deuce DeBellis and Braeden Davis combined for a nice open field tackle on the ensuing kickoff. Dylan Schwartz knocked down a pass intended for a Trojan receiver. A Trojan pass attempt on 4th and 12 fell harmlessly to the turf, allowing the Centurions to take over again on downs at their own 37 yard line. Thompson gained 19 yards on the ground and had his eyes on the end zone before being tripped up on a touchdown saving shoe-string tackle. Thompson followed that up with another nifty run picking up 9 more yards bringing the Centurions down to the 10 yard line. A holding call negated a touchdown pass for the Centurions. Facing 4th down and 15 yards, Carr broke loose for a 21 yard touchdown scamper down the right sideline as the horn sounded. At halftime, CAL led 26-0. Mattingly kicked off for the Centurions to start the 2nd half. The CAL defense forced the Trojans backwards before taking over on downs. CAL did not waste any time lighting up the scoreboard again. Thompson outran everyone for a 36 yard touchdown. Ehrenborg connected with Carr through the air to convert the extra point. CAL led 34-0 with 4:11 to go in the 3rd quarter. The Trojans were again being pushed back by the determined CAL defense. Andrew Dupps ripped the pass away from the Trojan receiver to give the ball back to the Centurions near mid-field. Ben Fields was able to drag a couple of tacklers a few yards down the field to pick up 3 yards. To start the 4th quarter, Carr broke free for another long touchdown run from near mid-field to complete the scoring. Nate Ehrenborg demonstrated a servant’s heart in making sure the team was hydrated on a hot humid day on the gridiron. The unsung heroes of the game were the boys in the trenches for CAL. The offensive and defensive lines controlled the line of scrimmage all game long. CAL had 286 yards of offense. The Trojans were only able to muster 22 yards of offense against a very determined CAL defense. Final score CAL 40, James T. Alton Trojans 0. 7 CAL ACORN TEAM KICKS OFF PRE-SEASON WITH CRIMSON CLASH TOURNEY The CAL Acorn team with first year coach, Kyle Doezema, began their pre-season with a tournament at Bellarmine in the Crimson Clash Tourney hosted by Noe Middle School and Manual High School. The team is led by returning 8th graders, Keeley Dickens, Sophie Herbig, Meghan Neumann, and Lorelei Shafer. They are hoping to 3-peat as state champions. This year they will need the help of a strong core of 7th graders led by goalie Haley Kruse, defender Alexa James, mid-fielder Allie Wheeler, and forward Jenna Doezema. Coach Doezema used the pre-season tournament to work on different rotations and to get the team used to playing with each other and to gain experience. In the tournament they tied a very good Holy Spirit team 0-0. In their second game they held a strong Holy Trinity team to 1-0 in the first half of the game before losing 5-0. In the third game they lost to a good Meyzeek team 3-0. They concluded the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Noe. The team will open the season next week at home against Meyzeek on Monday August 22 at 5:00. Come out and support our Centurions. 8 The CAL 6th grade Field Hockey team's season started off sending familiar ripples in the local community at the annual Crimson Clash held at Bellarmine University. With repeated heat index delays, the young ladies persevered and powered through four matches defeating S. Oldham, Crosby, Noe, and Kammerer along the way to make it to the semi-finals against Highlands Latin School. A convincing victory earned the Centurions a spot in the finals against their common foe in Holy Trinity. Goals were scored by more than a handful of players while goalies Corinne Lonergan and Emily Hough kept opponent scoring at bay. The team has a few new faces, but the core has stayed together heading into middle school. The steamy Crimson Clash ended Saturday night with a runner-up finish, but the remaining season will prove just how committed and determined the players are to achieve success while glorifying our Lord's kingdom. Although we experienced a loss to the Bulldogs, final score 39-6, there were some highlights and plenty to build on for the season. Quarterback Grant Collins handed off to TY Bindner which resulted in a 72 yard run by TY up the middle for a touchdown early in the 2nd quarter. The team had good blocking by Foster McKinney, Parker Brandon, Mark Mauzy, Riley Baker, Will Graham, Nathan Durston and Camden Carothers. The Centurions had a couple other nice runs from Landon Kirtley and Nicholas Doster that yielded a few more first downs. Defensively, our Centurions stopped several long runs by good tackles from Sam Bates, Graham Greenwell and Jacob Manning. Every player had the opportunity to play and contribute to the game. The 1st/2nd Centurions next game is August 20th at 10:00AM versus the Spencer County Stallions. Come out and support our Mighty Mites and root them on to their first victory of the season. 10 Morgan, Director of Athletics 244-3225 ext. 1072 [email protected] Jennifer Roberts, Assistant AD, 244-3225, ext 1037 [email protected] Cora Parker, Administrative Assistant 244-3225 ext. 1080 [email protected] Stefan LeFors, Scheduling Coordinator, 244-3225 ext 1081 [email protected] Hollie Foster, Sports Information,244-3225 ext. 1054, [email protected] Trisha Pullen, Centurion Armory, [email protected] Kate Meyer, Athletic Trainer, [email protected] For CAL Sports Game and Practice Schedules visit: www.caschools.us/centurion-athletics THE CENTURION ARMORY 753-4598 FALL SPORTS: HIGH SCHOOL Cross Country-Lowery Stallings, [email protected] Cheerleading-Charli Knauer, [email protected] Field Hockey-Stanley Phulpagar, [email protected] Football-Stefan LeFors, [email protected] Golf Boys’-Greg Zimmerer, [email protected] Golf Girls’- Ron Gustafason, [email protected] Strength & Conditioning- Greg Lile, [email protected] Soccer - Boys-Toby Wilcox, [email protected] Soccer -Girls-John Zutt, [email protected] Volleyball-Patty Ernst, [email protected] MIDDLE SCHOOL: Cross Country– TJ Eubanks, [email protected] Cheerleading– Maggie Tait, [email protected] Field Hockey – Kyle Doezema [email protected] Football - Danny McGee, [email protected] Volleyball– Jade Burke, [email protected] Tennis Girls/Boys—Todd Hammonds, [email protected] WINTER SPORTS: HIGH SCHOOL Basketball (Boys) - Chad Carr, [email protected] Basketball (Girls) - Perry White, [email protected] Bowling - Tim Brown, [email protected] Cheerleading— Audrey Able, [email protected] Strength & Conditioning- Greg Lile, [email protected] Swimming, Amy Albiero, [email protected] MIDDLE SCHOOL: Basketball– (Boys) - Robert Boggs, [email protected] Basketball (Girls) - Bill Gardner, [email protected] Cheerleading– Maggie Tate, [email protected] Swimming, Amy Albiero, [email protected] SPRING SPORTS: High School Baseball - Tim Brown, [email protected] Softball- Kyle Mullin, [email protected] Boys Lacrosse– TBD Girls Lacrosse– Sean Reding, [email protected] Strength & Conditioning- Greg Lile, [email protected] Boys Tennis– Todd Hammonds, [email protected] Girls Tennis– TBD Boys/Girls Track and Field- Lowery Stallings, [email protected] MIDDLE SCHOOL: Baseball - Doug Russell, [email protected] Softball – Eddie Franz, [email protected] Boys Lacrosse– TBD Girls Lacrosse– Sean Reding, [email protected] Boys Golf – Tony Bischoff, [email protected] Girls Golf—Darcy Coombe, [email protected] Boys Soccer– TBD Girls Soccer- Joey Autry, [email protected] Boys/Girls Track - Natalie Ball, [email protected] Intramural Offerings: Grades K-5 Jennifer Roberts, Assistant AD, 244-3225, ext 1037, [email protected] CALATHLETICS@CENTURIONAD 11
