Lifelong Learning Institute in Chesterfield Non-credit courses, lectures, activities and special events For adults age 50 and "better" SUMMER PROGRAM MAY 4 – AUGUST 28, 2015 What We Are The Lifelong Learning Institute in Chesterfield is a member-supported organization designed to meet the educational and social enrichment needs of adults age 50 and “better”. The Institute is a learning community of peers who are committed to ongoing education and their own intellectual development. Members want to stay current, are curious about the world of ideas and are involved with their own learning. The Institute develops and offers daytime courses, lectures and special events on a wide range of topics. There are no exams, no credits and no college degrees required. The program consists of spring, summer and fall terms. Professors and other course leaders, who work without compensation, are well known, informed and experienced professionals who enjoy sharing their knowledge and expertise. Who We Are The Lifelong Learning Institute in Chesterfield is administered and operated by its volunteer members and its sponsors: the Virginia Center on Aging at Virginia Commonwealth University, Chesterfield County Public Schools and Chesterfield County. LLI Chesterfield is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that is committed to equitable treatment and elimination of discrimination in all its forms at all organizational levels and throughout all programs. Our Institute is a member of the Road Scholar Institute Network (RSIN), an umbrella organization for Lifelong Learning Institutes in the United States and Canada. All members are welcome. Please advise the office if you plan to attend to ensure arrangements are made for seating. The annual membership fee of $150 per person allows individuals to participate in all of the courses, lectures and planned social events available during their 12 months of membership. Attached you will find a membership application. Checks should be made payable to the Lifelong Learning Institute. You may also pay online with a service fee. The Institute also has a limited number of scholarships available to those with a financial need. Scholarships are distributed on a first-come, first-served need basis. Please contact the office at 378-2527 for details. The Lifelong Learning Institute reserves the right to refuse or revoke a membership. See below for our program to help save on your renewal fee! Referral Program We offer a member referral program. If you are an existing member and refer someone to LLI Chesterfield, you become eligible for a discount on your next renewal fee. The individual must be a new member and must list you on the application form as the referring member. When they have completed 10 weeks of membership, a ten dollar ($10) discount will be applied to your next membership renewal fee. You can refer and get credit for as many new members as you would like, up to the total of your membership fee! Only one member can receive the credit for each new member. Name Badges When you sign up as a member, a name badge will be made for you. The badge is displayed on a hook outside of the office. We request that you wear your name badge to all classes and special events. It is useful for meeting new friends, as well as helping us recognize when non-members are visiting. You may choose to add a card to the holder behind the nametag indicating pertinent health information to be used in the event of an emergency. Guests LLI classes and activities are intended for LLI members. A member’s guest from out of town may attend a class or an activity as long as attendance is not limited. Local residents who are interested in joining are limited to one guest visit per year! The office must be informed prior to any guest attending. Guest name badges will be available, and to ensure fairness and facilitate administration of this policy, name badges must be worn by guests to all classes and activities. Please pre‐register your guest and check in with the office upon arrival. Physical Needs The Lifelong Learning Institute is accessible to persons with disabilities and we will try to accommodate special physical needs. Please contact the office (804-378-2527) if you have special needs. Bad Weather When Chesterfield County Schools are closed because of weather conditions, LLI classes will be cancelled for the day. When Chesterfield County Schools have a delay, LLI classes will begin at 10:00AM, and any classes scheduled to begin before 10:00AM will be cancelled. Class cancellation information will be available on the website and the answering machine by 8:00AM. Location of Classes All classes (unless otherwise noted) are held at 13801 Westfield Road, Midlothian, in front of Watkins Annex Park, cooperatively utilizing the school building with Connections Academy. The building is located behind Sycamore Square Shopping Center. Parking Parking is available in the school's paved lot, adjacent to the building. First Baptist Church generously allows LLI members to utilize their parking lot. We request if you are able to park across the street and walk safely across Westfield Road, that you park in the church's parking lot. Please leave the row closest to the church open and do not park on the grassy area, since it is not zoned for parking at this time. Thank you for your cooperation! Registration You may register online at www.llichesterfield.org or mail the attached registration form to Lifelong Learning Institute, P. O. Box 1090, Midlothian, VA 23113, or drop it off at the Institute at 13801 Westfield Road, Midlothian. You are urged to attend all courses and activities for which you enroll. Good attendance is important in getting future instructors and speakers, who receive no fees or honoraria. Non-attendance also results in under-utilized classroom space and often prevents others from participating. If a member wishes to attend a class or course for which he or she is not registered, he or she should call or stop by the office to determine if space is available. Class Confirmations will be e-mailed after Open Registration and on-going whenever a member registers for a class. If a member does not have e-mail, a copy will be available in the office. Registration for the Summer Session will be available online on April 17, 2015. Open Registration will take place on site Monday, April 20th - Thursday, April 23rd (9:00AM - 3:00PM each day). Any classes that have more registrations received than available spaces during the open registration period will use a lottery system to determine registration. After close of Open Registration, registrations will revert to a first come, first served basis. If your registration is received during Open Registration for a repeat course for which you remained on a waiting list (and were not offered the chance to participate in the course), you will be given a place in that same course before the lottery begins. All registrations received (online, in person or via US mail) follow the Open Registration procedure. All class fees are due at time of registration. Registrations cannot be processed if any fees are outstanding. Trips Guests are welcome on LLI Trips if space is available. LLI Members will have priority through Open Registration. All payments MUST be received no less than 40 days prior to the trip (unless otherwise noted) and your seat will only be reserved upon receipt of payment. We are sorry, but we are unable to provide refunds after 30 days prior to the trips and the request must be made in writing. The play will be chosen based on number of students. In addition to actors and actresses, there will be a need for "behind the scenes" assistance--props, costumes and stage management. We invite those with the "acting bug" to register for this class. We promise it will be filled with great fun and wonderful memories! The following criteria are strongly encouraged: experience in professional theater, college, local productions, participation in LLI Readers Theater or ABC's of Performance classes, willingness to memorize scripts and availability for two classes per week. We will perform plays and skits, using scripts (no memorization required)! Using voices and facial expression, we'll tell our stories. You'll need some prior instruction and/or a knowledge of basic steps. Quick learners learn by observing and dancing. Minimal instruction includes new as well as old dances. Course: AD152105 Funtastics Choral Group $3 Thursday May 7, 14, 21, 28, June 4, 11, 18, 25, July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 2:45-4:00 Instructor(s): Sandy Phillips Lend your interest in choral singing to the LLI Funtastics Choral Group. This wonderful group of singers rehearses once a week. We sing a variety of musical styles and have a lot of fun in the process. We will perform at several LLI functions, as well as at Funtastics concerts. In addition to singing, we work on reading music and learning to make the most of our voices. Choral singing is known to benefit our physical and social well-being. It is calming; it raises our spirits; and it makes us part of something magical. Course: AD152080 Woodcarving: Open Carve Sessions Wednesday May 13, 20, 27, June 3, 10, 17, 24, July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, August 5, 12, 19, 26 9:00-11:00 Instructor(s): Bill Good LLI Woodcarvers are invited to gather around the tables for an open carving session each Wednesday. The idea is to bring our carving enthusiasts together for a fun, social opportunity to work on an old project or start something new. No formal instruction will be provided, but Bill will act as coordinator. Bring along your favorite carving or tool-of-choice to share, an album of work or a book to inspire and a hunk of wood to whittle. Attendance is not required at each session, but students are encouraged to mark planned absences on the class roster. Happy carving! Course: AD152109 Drawing and Watercolor - Open Studio Wednesday, Thursday May 20, 21 10:00-2:00 Instructor(s): Cathy Notzelman This open studio workshop is for students interested in working on projects of their own choosing in drawing and/or watercolor. The instructor will be available for questions and individual feedback. Bring your lunch and enjoy some dedicated time to finish a project, start a new one, or both! Course: AD152021 Tap Dancing Tuesday June 9, 23, July 7, 21, August 4, 18 10:00-11:00 Instructor(s): Peggy Chicklo, Diana Donahue, Pauline Dufficy This tap class is for everyone! Good for exercising the body and the mind as you will be learning new steps. You will learn soft shoe and waltz clog in this tap class. All levels are welcome! Course: AD152001 Ballet Wednesday June 10, July 8, Aug 12 12:00-1:00 Instructor(s): Katherine Martyak This abbreviated summer class introduces students to classical ballet or welcomes back students who danced as a child. The class is designed to exercise proper alignment and posture. The class will also include gentle stretching, coordination and balance exercises. The instructor hopes to resume weekly classes in the Fall! 6 Course: AD152144 VMFA: It's Your Art Friday June 12 10:30-11:30 Instructor(s): Sally Josephson You already know that the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is open 365 days a year and that general admission is free. But would you like to know more? Come here a presenter from VMFA’s Speakers Bureau share “It’s Your Art,” which is also the VMFA slogan. The presentation will cover the following topics: VMFA’s permanent collection, special exhibitions, events, social opportunities, facilities and museum history. Course: AD152012 Advanced Watercolor with Marti Thursday June 18, 25, July 2, 9, 16, 23 10:30-12:30 Instructor(s): Marti Franks This watercolor class is for those students who have taken a basic or intermediate watercolor class and have advanced to the next level. They will learn to expand the principles of composition and build on their watercolor skills and techniques, such as wet-on-wet, color washes, glazing, shading and textures. Students will need to bring eight colors of paints, three brushes, a pallet, board, canvas, tape and art erasers. The instructor asks that you please purchase high quality supplies; there will be a difference in the final result if you use lower quality items. Do not purchase student-grade paints, such as Windsor, Newton-Cotman, or Academy. Call Marti, 794-2407, if you would like help ordering your supplies. Course: AD152119 Yupo and Watercolor Workshop Tuesday, Wednesday June 23, 24 9:30-2:30 Instructor(s): Beverly Perdue Do you want to get out of your painting rut? Explore the spontaneous results when…Watercolor meets Yupo paper! Yupo is a synthetic plastic paper. The results are unpredictable, and it's challenging but so much fun! (Think skiing with no ski poles.) The class is for intermediate artists. Bring your favorite watercolor colors and brushes. Yupo Paper can be ordered from Cheap Joes by calling 1-800-227-2788: Heavy Weight (144 lb. 26 x 40), Order #: YU400-5. Students who took Bev’s class in the spring should have enough paper for this workshop. Students will need reference photos (preferably their own) with accompanying black and white references for value information. Subject references should be "Simple Big Shapes". Bring a working mat, either half sheet or quarter sheet size. Bev recommends Burnt Umber, Neutral Tint, and Carmine by Holbein or Daniel Smith. Course: AD152043 Collage Monday June 29 1:00-3:00 Instructor(s): Anne Moderegger Students should collect flat material like pictures, stamps, fabrics, memorables, pressed flowers and similar items for this class. The instructor will demonstrate and assist students as they create pictures out of the material and frame them. It is a simple technique and is a lot of fun! 7 Course: AD152141 Lifelong Musicians Thursday July 2, 16, 23, August 13, 20, 27 10:00-11:00 Instructor(s): Diane Applewhite Calling all LLI students who used to or still play an instrument of any kind! This is the summer class for you! No formal instruction will be provided, but Diane will guide the class as they explore the mutual lifelong passion for music. Various genres and eras of music will be shared. This is for entertainment and not performance. Don’t be surprised if it revives a passion for music! Music is good for the soul! Students should bring their instruments to the first class but are welcome to join if they don’t have the instrument they would like to play. Diane will try to help find instruments for the class. Course: AD152022 Ballroom Dance for Couples Friday July 17, 24, 31, August 7, 14, 21 11:00-12:00 Instructor(s): Bill Busch This semester we will have an abbreviated 6-week course in the easiest and most fun dance for couples, the East Coast Swing! Please: No footwear that can slide off your feet. Also, you will want shoes with SMOOTH SOLES (less fatiguing for dancing). Course: AD152142 Richmond Ballet: Travels to China and the 2015-16 Season Monday August 3 11:30-12:30 Instructor(s): Brett Bonda Join our friends from Richmond Ballet as they share their experiences from their recent trip to China! You will hear all about their travels and performances throughout Beijing, Dezhou, Jinan, and Shanghai! Information will also be shared about their exciting 2015-16 Season! This class is for everyone from the avid ballet viewer to those simply curious about ballet. Come see what the hype is all about! Course: AD152134 Woodcarving: Bottlestopper $20 Tuesday August 4, 11, 18 9:00-11:00 Instructor(s): Christine Fletcher Students will learn how to carve from a rough-out along with a print out to follow. Instructor will go over new techniques and allow students to choose between carving a: Santa, Mountain Man or Cowboy. If you have your own carving tools, bring them. If not, basic carving knives and gouges will be available for in-class use. There is a material fee of $20 for the class. Course: AD152143 Stained Glass Demonstration Monday August 10 11:15-12:45 Instructor(s): Barbara Gestwick The instructor, who is also an LLI member, was always intrigued by stained glass but believed she would never be able to make it herself. Chesterfield County offered a course at one of the local high schools, and she took it. In that class, she created a 10" x 10" pink butterfly. Creating stained glass is an expensive procedure, requiring the purchase of stained glass, a cutter, a soldering iron, copper foil tape, flux liquid (for soldering) and framing supplies. This demonstration will show students how to use a pattern, cut, grind, fit, solder, clean, polish and prepare a stained glass creation for hanging. You may just find a new creative hobby here! 8 CO Computers and Technology Course: CO152046 Introduction to Your iPad A Thursday May 14, 21 10:00-11:30 Instructor(s): Mel Kauffman Are you the proud owner of an iPad? Are you getting the most out of your iPad or do you know how to turn it on yet? This class will include an overview of the basics to include setup, e-mail, photos, apps and more! With generous Q & A time and email communication with the instructor, students will learn short cuts, tricks and how to make their iPads their own. Students should own an iPad 2 or newer to take this course. Please register for only one session (iPad A or B) to allow all students a chance to participate. This course will help bring smiles instead of stress when you’re using your Android smart phone. There's a lot to learn as technology is constantly changing and advancing, but this class will provide helpful tips and tricks that you'll likely need to know in the early days of having an Android smart phone. The course will cover setup, Using the Built-in Apps, Getting and Using Other Apps, Enjoying Music At Home and On the Go, Troubleshooting and Help, and even more Tips and Tricks. Students should own an Android smart phone to take this course. Please register for only one session (Android A or B) to allow all students a chance to participate. Course: CO152021 Basic Excel Monday June 8, 15, 22, 29 9:30-11:00 Instructor(s): Joanna Lurie The Excel workbook may be used for many purposes, managing not only numbers but also text. Learn how to use the basic functions and maneuver in the worksheets and workbook. In the class, we will build formulas, use preset auto formulas, format lists and sort text. This is a hands-on class, so please bring your laptop. A limited number of laptops will be available for students without laptops. The classes are informal and there is always time for questions. Course: CO152056 Computer Basics: How It Really Works Thursday June 11, 18 9:30-11:30 Instructor(s): West Cobb The goals of this class are to help students understand the major components of a personal computer system and how these components work together to help us get work done, entertain us and communicate with others. Examples of key components are: hard drive storage, memory, USB ports, operating systems, applications, filing system and CPU. If you have questions such as "How do I buy a computer that is right for me?" or "Why is my computer running slow?," this class is just right for you! This will be a hands-on class, so please bring your laptop. His great-granddaughter, Kitty Snow, has created Richmond In Sight to restore, preserve, and identify Harry's approximately 4,000 images and to collect oral histories of the people who grew up on those cobblestoned streets of Richmond in the early 1900s. This is a continuation from Fall 2014 and will include the journey through Ethiopia and East Africa. The instructor will share the cultural observations he gained traveling in Africa at a time when it was still a challenge to adventure through the continent, which was then torn apart by multiple wars to seek independence from Colonial powers. Bessette, LLI has decided to spend the day with Carol once again, this time highlighting the Civil War Forts of DC. The Civil War brought into question not only the future of the country, but also the safety of the Federal capital. Washington, DC was in a truly perilous position, with the Union on one side and the Confederacy on the other. During this period, Washington was considered the most heavily-defended city on earth, with a ring of 68 forts and 93 batteries constructed to protect the capital. We will visit Fort Ward, the best preserved of these forts, and its museum. This historic fort provides visitors with an excellent understanding of Civil War-era military engineering. About 90% of the fort's earthwork walls are preserved and the Northwest Bastion has been restored and reconstructed to its original condition. On our way to lunch at the popular Fish Market Restaurant in Old Town Alexandria, Carol will share tales of Alexandria’s status as an "occupied city" throughout the war. The pain escalated to a point where he couldn’t pick up his daughter. An estimated 10 million Americans suffer from chronic back and leg pain and, like Nate, the vast majority feel alone, isolated, confused, and unsure of how to manage their pain. Despite the fact that so many individuals suffer from back and leg pain, it is a frequently underestimated and overlooked problem. Chronic back and leg pain is generally not a life threatening condition and there is often no physical representation of the pain. Nevertheless, the symptoms are very real and can be extremely debilitating to those afflicted. Thankfully, Nate found relief from his back and leg pain after undergoing the XLIF procedure. Alberston, Jim has been an LLI member since 2014. He retired from teaching History in 2008, after 41 years and recently retired coaching with 70 sports seasons. Jim has served in the following volunteer capacities: Board Member for the Chesterfield Historical Society, Docent for the Virginia Historical Society, Docent for the Virginia War Memorial, Adult Member of the CCPS Youth Services Board, Member of the Teacher's Advisory Council for The American Civil War Museum and volunteer helper at two CCPS schools with history teachers in the classroom. He has also received the following awards: 2004 Teacher of the Year from the American Civil War Museum at Tredegar, VFW Award 2007 Teacher of the Year Promoting Citizenship Education, Recognition by the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors in 2008 for teaching and coaching accomplishments. Applewhite, Diane graduated top of her apprenticeship class, sponsored by the Culinary Institute of America and Virginia Chef's Association. She went on to work in a private club, a five star hotel (as Pastry and Garde Manger Chef), and as a personal Chef of a private estate. She owned and operated her own catering and wholesale dessert business for 15 years. After her three sons come along, she began working for Chesterfield County Schools. In the summer of 2005, Diane had to retire on disability, due to the multiple injuries she sustained in 2001 while working as a Teacher of Culinary Arts in a local high school. Diane has been at LLI almost 3 years. She enjoyed working on the cookbook team and is always willing to play guitar when asked. Barron, Charles is a Retired US Army Officer, holds a BS in Business Administration from Jacksonville State University and an MS in Logistics Management from Florida Institution of Technology. He also holds a certificate for teaching English as a second language. Charles has 10 years of experience working with and training members of the Saudi Arabian military in logistics and cultural awareness. As a United States military contractor, working in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, he taught American workers and third country nationals (TCNs) Cultural Awareness, simple Arabic script (Arabic letters, Arabic phonetics recognizing/reading English words written in Arabic Script) and most useful basic spoken Arabic words and phrases. Bell, Karen received a B.S. in Psychology from Texas A&M University in 1990 and a M.S. in Neurobiology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1998. She is currently working on a second Master's degree in Social Work at VCU. She has 25 years of combined research experience in both basic science and social science and currently works in the Anatomy and Neurobiology Department at VCU-MCV, in Richmond. Karen is also a member of the Chesterfield Council on Aging, National Association of Social Workers, and the local RVA chapter of the National Organization for Women. Beyke, Robert has been a member of LLI Chesterfield since 2007. He enjoys facilitating the Monday bridge class! Bishop, Millie is the Revenue Recovery Manager with Chesterfield Fire and EMS. She is responsible for coordinating all the billing and payment activity for the ambulance transports. Millie has been with the Fire department since July 2011 and worked with the Chesterfield Treasurer's Office for 7 years prior as ACH payment and Credit Card Coordinator. Millie has an Accounting degree and is a Medical Assistant. Millie also is certified as NAAC and NACO with ambulance billing and is a Notary Public. Bonda, Brett is in his 28th year with Richmond Ballet. A member of the Richmond Ballet professional company from 1985-1995, Mr. Bonda is fondly remembered for classic roles such as the “Champion Roper” in Rodeo and “Franz” in Coppelia, as well as works created for him that are still performed today such as the first pas de deux in Ancient Airs and Dances. Inspired by a National Dance Institute training course taught by Lori Klinger, Mr. Bonda left the stage in 1995 to become Education and Minds In Motion Director for the Ballet; he subsequently served for 16 years as its artistic and administrative coordinator. Mr. Bonda’s comprehensive experience also includes generating advertising sales for the Richmond Ballet and acting as its in-house tour booking agent. Additionally, Mr. Bonda has served as company manager on tour and video producer for the organization. Mr. Bonda has earned the love and respect of both the Richmond community and people within the national dance field. 39 Bradstock, Mary has been an LLI member since 2009. She has been facilitating the line dance practices as well as assisting with the line dance classes. Brown, Sherella is a certified Jazzercise fitness instructor who specializes in working with active adults who combine dance with exercise. Burris, Sheila is a certified yoga instructor who has studied yoga since 1999. She began teaching with us in the spring of 2008. Busch, Bill is a retiree that began dancing at the age of 17, that now enjoys sharing his accumulated knowledge of the basic six ballroom social dances. Men learn how to lead and women how to follow in these semester long classes. All couples also learn styling differences of each dance, timing and some dance history. Lastly, those couples that stay with the learning experience also have FUN. Ask one of LLI's returning students. Some have been coming back for years. Butterworth, Ed is a mathematician who enjoys bridge and other games and puzzles such as Sudoku, KenKen, numbrix, word jumble and crosswords.` Chicklo, Peggy is the sister of a member, Diana Donahue. She has been dancing for years and loves tap. Clatterbaugh, John is a retired community college administrator/teacher. He holds degrees in forestry, horticulture, and college and university administration. He has been planning, developing and teaching active outdoor programs for youth and senior adults since 1963. He has also participated in the development task force for community college lifelong programs and Road Scholar (Elderhostel) programs. John is currently teaching Your Nature Connection and Edible and Useful Plants of the Appalachian Mountains for other Roads Scholar programs and community groups. Clendenin, Anne is a member of LLI who enjoys dancing and has been playing pickleball for the last few years. She wants to share her love for pickleball with other members at LLI. Cobb, West retired from a career in banking and technology, and now owns a part-time business helping individuals with any computer problem or decision. He has volunteered at LLI since January 2015, assisting with computer courses and offering scheduled one-on-one assistance. See the shelf outside the office for available dates and times. Confer, Michelle is an Occupational Therapy student at Virginia Commonwealth University. She previously attended UVA and majored in psychology. She plans on pursuing a career working as an OT with adults in a rehabilitation setting. She is very excited to share what she's been learning in school and teach this class! Conley, Ed is a writer and photographer in Blackstone, Virginia, where he also teaches meditation. Integrative Restoration and Silver Thread Dialogues are offered on Facebook. Crutchfield, Norma has been a member of LLI since 2008 and loves playing games, especially with her friends at LLI. Norma also enjoys doing puzzles and volunteering for LLI! Curry, Wade Ph. D, for 27 years, taught English and theater courses and served as Dean of Arts and Sciences at the College of New Jersey. For 10 years, he was the Director of Advanced Placement at the College Board. He has been a member of LLI since 2009. Donahue, Diana a member of LLI, is the sister of Peggy Chicklo and has been dancing for years. She loves tap dancing. Drummond, Diane is a current member at LLI. She began making headbands and hairbows for her beautiful granddaughter and has continued adding to her repertoire of craft skills, which she happily shares with LLI members in a variety of classes. Dufficy, Pauline has been dancing for 8 years under the instruction of our own member and instructor, Barbara Rozett. 40 Dunkum, Tom has been an LLI member since 2010 and enjoys helping with the weekly Bible Discussion. Tom is a retired United Methodist Minister (41 years) and is active at St. Marks United Methodist Church on Lucks Lane. He is also active in several mission projects including Meals on Wheels, Missions of Mercy (free dental mission statewide), Chaplain (volunteer) at Johnston Willis Hospital. Ellison, Murray retired in 2009 with over 30 years experience in the field of education as a teacher, school principal, and VA state administrator of programs for prisoners. He has a BS, MS, and Doctorate Degree in Special Education. He is presently a Master of Arts student in English Literature at VCU. He serves on the Boards of LLI, The Poe Museum, and the Virginia Prison Minister's Overseers (GraceInside). Ferguson, Bob has been an active member of LLI since 2008. He has a Ph.D. in Chemistry. He was involved in technical research, management, and consulting for 38 years at Phillip Morris/Altria. He has varied interests including history, economics, and literature. He recently became interested in readers theater and performed in a Bifocals production. Fletcher, Christine After earning a degree in Graphics Art and owning her own screen printing business for over 20 years, Christine Fletcher turned her artistic talents to woodcarving. Christine specializes in carving wood spirits and caricatures. Her wood carving artwork has taken multiple blue ribbons in various shows on the east coast, and has been featured in the Mathews Art Gallery. Her creations can now be purchased at “Put in Creek Carvings” an Art Studio in Mathews, VA. Christine constantly shares her knowledge with both new and advanced woodcarvers by teaching in multiple workshops and seminars for the James River Woodcarvers over the last few years. Her reputation as a highly skilled woodcarver and instructor has earned her the prestigious position as the James River Woodcarvers Workshop Coordinator. She looks forward to sharing her woodcarving knowledge and skills with the Lifelong Learning Institute patrons. Franks, Marti loves Watercolors! She has been painting for over 18 years, starting out with Ellie Cox and continuing with Sarah Hoyle, Chris Wynn, and Susan Stuller. Marti is a past president of the Bon Air Artists Association and has served as a co-chair of its events, Art Affair and Artful Healing. She exhibits at Crossroads Art Center and is a co-op owner of Uptown Gallery. Garrett, Ed is a retired United Methodist minister of the VA Conference of the United Methodist Church. He has served churches in VA for 42 years, leading Bible studies and teaching educational classes for various denominations. He holds a B.A. degree from the University of Richmond, a B.D. from Duke University, an M.A. degree in education from Union Theological Seminary and a doctorate from St. Mary’s University in Baltimore. He is the author of two books and various curriculum materials and articles. Gestwick, Barbara is a relative newcomer to LLI, she delights in crafting of all kinds: Sewing, knitting, crocheting, painting, stained glass, woodworking, etc. At LLI, she loves the classes in art and the reader's theater. He has held various positions in Finance and Marketing at MeadWestvaco Corporation. He holds a Master of Business Administration and designations of Certified Fund Specialist and Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor. Good, Bill participated in Civil War reenactments for 10 years as an infantryman and ambulance corp. He is a wealth of knowledge on the Civil War. He has been a member of LLI since 2007 and enjoys history, genealogy and woodcarving. Graves, Sherry is a registered nurse and certified health coach. She provides solutions to people who wish to avoid or manage the physical, emotional, and financial impact of chronic illness. Hahn, Alfred is experienced in information retrieval outside academia. He produced and delivered history programs for lifelong learners at Long Island University, C.W. Post campus. He is a former member of the U.S. military and a member of The Society of Former Intelligence Officers. 41 Hall, Greg holds a B.A. from Emory University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia with concentrations in American Literature, Shakespeare, and Film. He has taught courses in The American Novel into Film, Shakespeare into Film, Detective Fiction and Film Noir, Drama and Comedy into Film, and Film as Literature---to name a few. He has served on the faculties of North Carolina Wesleyan, Erskine, Clemson, VCU, Virginia Union, VSU, and several other schools. After retiring from full time teaching at VSU, he continued teaching part time at Fort Lee for three years and currently teaches such courses as The Films of Frank Capra and Hitch in the Forties at The Shepherd Center in Chester. At 75 he still feels that he has a lot to say, and he enjoys saying it! Harris, Sharon is a retired licensed professional counselor and marriage and family therapist. She is also a former secondary school teacher, having taught English, Journalism and French. She is married to Hugh Harris, a retired pastor, and an artist and writer. Together she and Hugh have just published her first book, NPH: Journey into Dementia and Out Again, which grows out of her experience with a neurological condition known as normal pressure hydrocephalus. She is a native of Richmond and has lived in Chesterfield County for over 24 years. In addition, she has lived in Henrico and Hanover Counties and in the cities of Chesapeake and Staunton. In recent years Sharon has been involved with LLI for classes in French, writing, color, Reader’s Theater and computer skills. She is a lifelong learner who enjoys teaching and encouraging others. Harris, Hugh is a retired pastor who has morphed into several new identities since retirement in 1999. He formed a corporation, Watermedia Creations & More! Inc., through which he produced, marketed and sold his original art works. He closed the corporation in 2009, but has continued his artistic pursuits through a sole proprietorship, Art by Hugh Harris. Another retirement identity is that of writer. He participates in the LLI Writers’ Critique Group and has published two novels with a third on the way. Still another identity was that of caregiver during his wife Sharon’s experience with a neurological condition that led her through dementia and out again. He has worked with her on a small book about that experience in hopes of encouraging others with similar symptoms. Herman, Pat having initially learned how to knit from her mother, has been knitting all of her life. She volunteers her time and talents for a knitting healing ministry with her church. She also enjoys participating in knitting workshops and conferences. Ireland, Marie teaches basic and advanced paper craft techniques in the Midlothian area. She hosts monthly card and scrapbook workshops and special craft events using Stampin’ Up© products. Josephson, Sally is a member of the council of VMFA and enjoys volunteering at VMFA and in the community raising awareness of the museum and all it has to offer. Kauffman, Mel spent 35 years with the CIA dealing with communications, networking, and security. He holds ISCET certifications in Electronics/Radio/Computers and NRI certification in computers. Mel has been using computers since 1984. Kelly, Rachel has been the Executive Director at LLI in Chesterfield since March 2014. She previously worked for 4 years in IT and as a Financial Team Manager with a nonprofit in Mechanicsville, Caring Voice Coalition. Before that, she was an Assistant Branch Manager with First Market Bank in Richmond and a Store Manager at Starbucks Coffee Company. She has enjoyed attending and volunteering for her church, Clover Hill Assembly of God for over 10 years and is grateful for the opportunity she has to travel to Honduras each summer to work with Give Hope 2 Kids, a children's home in the mountains. Kern, Kristen is a Registered Nurse with a BSN from James Madison University. She has worked in both the acute setting at MCV and HCA Hospitals as well as in the home setting for the last 20 years. She choose nursing because of her desire to help others and she enjoys being able to educate others about the wonderful services available to support recovery and wellness after and during an illness. 42 Kittinger, R Keith has been a Pharmacist in Virginia for over 40 years working in the community and hospital with special work in the areas of mental health and senior care. He is the Vice President of Richmond Apothecaries, consisting of three independent Bremo pharmacies. Bremo Pharmacy specializes in pharmacy compounding and offers innovative pharmaceutical care services, including Medication Therapy Management. Kot, Bette MLIS, is a retired librarian from the California Genealogical Society and has many years of experience researching and teaching genealogy. Kunnmann, Steve grew up on Long Island, NY, attended college at Georgia Tech and Rutgers and has been an LLI member since 2013. He and his wife, Nancy, enjoy the many classes they take at LLI and also love Downton Abbey. Laffoon, Sherri is the Emergency Management Planner with Chesterfield Fire & EMS-Emergency Management Division, responsible for the public education and outreach program. She is also the Coordinator for Chesterfield’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program. Sherri has been with Emergency Management since October 2009 and worked in the Chesterfield Emergency Communications Center for three years prior where she was involved in the hiring and CALEA Accreditation processes. She is a member of the Central Virginia Emergency Management Alliance and the Virginia Fire Chiefs Assoc. Administrative Professionals Section. Sherri has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration and has earned the Professional Emergency Manager (PEM) designation. Lemza, John is a 1976 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He served over 20 years in the Army with more than eight years abroad in Asia and Europe. His last assignment was at the Pentagon. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2005 with an MA in History and in December 2014 with a PhD in History from George Mason University. His research interests are post-1945 America, the Cold War, the history of immigration, modern intellectual history, consumerism, military history, and trans-national history. John also teaches history at John Tyler Community College. He taught at the Elderhostel Chautauqua at Natural Bridge, VA from 2009-2011. He has been a member of the LLI teaching faculty since 2005. John is a member of the LLI, sits on the Board of Directors, and is a past president of the Board. He is also an Eagle Scout. Leslie, June is a lifelong Christian. She has been a member at LLI Chesterfield since 2008 and has also taught Bible classes in Chesterfield and Missouri. Lewis, Annebel is a Socio-Cultural Anthropologist whose primary research is in ritual, belief systems, and mythology. She is retired from California State University Fullerton and from Southern California Kaiser Permanente Medical Group. She appeared in Who's Who in American Women in 91-92 and has been published in various professional journals. Annebel has been a faculty member of LLI since 2007 and serves on the Board of Directors. Liesfeld, Kathy earned an undergraduate degree from Radford College in 1976 and a Master’s Degree in English from VCU in 1984. She taught English for 35 years in Virginia and retired from Powhatan High School in 2011 after 32 years of teaching various grade levels of English and serving as the English Department Chair. Since her retirement, she has been the site substitute at Powhatan, and an adjunct instructor for the Southside Virginia Community College, and teaches college English classes at the Virginia Correctional Center for Women. Luchsinger, Ashley is a second year occupational therapy student at Virginia Commonwealth University and graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Old Dominion University (ODU) in Exercise Science and a minor in Psychology in 2013. Ashley was a division one swimmer throughout her four years at ODU and enjoys going to the beach and running with her dog. 43 Lurie, Joanna has a M.S. in Health Administration, a B.S. in Medical biology and is a certified Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) at a Masters Level (MASCP, MT (ASCP)). She is also certified in data base designs. She was the chemistry laboratory supervisor for 20 years in a major Long Island hospital. In addition, she worked as the Laboratory Information Systems Coordinator for six years, and she and her team developed, installed and taught the hospitals’ laboratory computer system for a seven-hospital system on Long Island, New York. She has been on the LLI faculty since 2006. Mare, Marilyn is a retired Chesterfield County teacher who taught at J B Watkins Elementary School. She joined LLI in 2007 and is an active member who volunteers whenever needed. She also enjoys teaching Mah Jongg to fellow LLI students! Markus, Glenn holds degrees in philosophy (epistemology) and in Greek and Roman studies, both from The Johns Hopkins University. He has been an instructor at LLI from its beginning and is also an instructor at other education programs for seniors in Virginia. Martin, George is Director of Chesterfield Learning Center in the Brandermill area. He has lived in New York, Connecticut, as well as Virginia. His interests include genealogy, writing, traveling and photography. His son, Ethan, a web architect working for Ebay, devised Pilatch, a card game based on rock-paperscissors. Martyak, Katherine has been dancing since the age of 3. She has formally trained in Ballet, Jazz, tap, hip hop, lyrical and musical theater. She attended East Carolina University and received a B.F.A. in Jazz concentration. Since college she has been teaching at Chesterfield Dance Center for the past four years and serving as the Assistant Director of CDC's dELIRIUM dance company. Mikuta, Mark principal with Estate Settlement Solutions,LLC. He has worked in internal audit, corporate finance and real estate management and development. Mark received his BS in accounting from the University of Richmond. He is a member of many professional organizations and is also a Certified Financial Planner. Miller, Jim is retired and a Chesterfield County resident. Jim is a Richmond native and attended Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, North Carolina. After graduation he moved to Baltimore, Maryland on business before returning to Richmond. Jim has been married for 45 years to Ramona Miller, a librarian at Midlothian High School. He has always enjoyed toy trains, is a member of the National Train Collectors Association and is president of the Virginia Train Collectors. Miller, Charles is a Neurosurgeon with Neurological Associates. Prior to joining Neurological Associates, Dr. Miller was a Neurosurgeon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he practiced in neurosurgery and neurocritical care. Dr. Miller attended Kalamazoo College in Michigan and went on to attend the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. He completed an internship in General Surgery at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center and a residency in Neurological Surgery from Loyola University Medical Center. He serves as the Neuro Trauma Surgeon at Chippenham Hospital. Moderegger, Anne has been an LLI member since 2010. She has experience in many forms of art, including pottery and landscaping! Morgan, Wendy RYT 200. She began her exploration of yoga after her youngest of three children was born in 2005, and she was certified to teach in 2011. It is her great pleasure to share her love of yoga so that others may enjoy the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of a regular practice. Wendy believes that yoga is a wellspring of goodness, encouraging us to practice mindfulness and gratitude in every moment. It is a path that leads to confidence and contentment and allows us all to let our bright inner light shine! When she is not cheering from the sidelines on the soccer field, Wendy enjoys reading and making stained glass windows. Moses, Dorothy has been an LLI member since 2008. She’s an aspiring writer and has participated in several critique groups. 44 Murphy, Mary Jane has a B.S. in Home Economics Education and a B.A. in Studio Art. She brings 25 years teaching experience to LLI and has been a member at Chesterfield LLI since 2010. Murray, Christina is a 2011 graduate from Hollins University with a B.A. in Photography. She is also the Store Manager of the Midlothian Branch of Richmond Camera. As her family's photographic historian and a new mother, Christina understands how overwhelming that box or stack of photos can be and is ready to help LLI members turn those shoeboxes full of photos and negatives into treasure chests! Nichol, Lorraine is an ongoing addition to our wonderful Great Books team. Norman, Renée originally from Westchester County, NY, was raised the daughter of a surgeon. On Oct. 5, 2007, the day before his fiftieth birthday, Renée's husband Chris, was diagnosed with ALS/Lou Gehrig's disease. It was this experience of caring for her husband that prompted Renée to write her book, as well as, become an advocate and educator for caregivers. As Renée cared for her husband, she realized there was no road map for caregivers, no how-to. Today, she lives in Midlothian, VA with Charlie and Clemie, their two Bernese Mountain dogs, Linus and Bentley, and a Maltipo named Louie. All three are therapy dogs. Renée and her children enjoy visiting nursing home residents with their dogs and have done so for nearly a decade. Notzelman, Cathy resides in Eastern Hanover County (Virginia) where she divides her time between software development and painting. She has taken numerous classes at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Visual Arts Center of Richmond including black and white photography and watercolor, which has been her primary focus since 2001. Her work has been exhibited in juried shows held by the Virginia Watercolor Society and the Central Virginia Watercolor Guild. Novitzki, Karen has been a member at LLI since 2008. She has taught several craft classes and is always a great help when it comes to decorating for events and new seasons! Oppe, Hans Ph.D, is a graduate of the Technical University Aachen in Germany. He is a retired corporate officer who worked for companies in Germany and the USA. Orth, Lise has been teaching group exercise classes for almost 35 years. She teaches strength/cardio classes, cycling and yoga. She enjoys working with all levels of students, and is especially thrilled to teach at LLI, where students are so motivated and happy. Lise feels the most important part of fitness is to have fun while you learn and get stronger - if it's not fun, why do it? With that thought in mind, Lise strives to make each class enjoyable as well as informative. Ostrander, Mike Trained in 1997 by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries as an Angling Instructor, he now runs the James River Fishing School and Discover the James. Capt. Mike loves the James River. If he's not guiding for catfish, he's probably fishing in his jon boat for smallmouth bass, eagle watching, fish watching, or just flipping rocks showing kids what's under them. Parnell, Todd "Parney" serves as the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. In that role, he oversees all aspects of the Flying Squirrels' day-to-day operations in Richmond. With his guidance, the franchise completed a 1.5 million dollar renovation of The Diamond, where they opened Eastern League play in 2010. During their inaugural season, the club quickly established itself as a leader in the community, while smashing corporate and ticket sales expectations. Parney also currently serves the Richmond Chapter of the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation Board of Trustees, as well as the Richmond Police Athletic League Board of Directors. Due to his flamboyant nature and wealth of experience in professional sports, Parney has also become one of the most popular speakers and guest lecturers in the region. 2015 will mark Parnell's 26th season in minor league baseball. Parney began his minor league baseball career during the 1990 season when he joined the Eastern League's Reading Phillies as the club's Director of Sales and Marketing. He was later promoted to Assistant General Manager, a position he held through the 1996 season. The 48-year old graduated from Messiah College in 1988 with a degree in physical education and a minor in business. He has two daughters, Lindsay and Samantha. 45 Patrick, Ian is a Financial Advisor and Senior Portfolio Advisor at Merrill Lynch in Richmond with over 20 years of experience in financial services. He holds a degree in economics from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a MBA from the University of North Carolina and has earned the designation of Chartered Retirement Planning CounselorSM. Ian has been quoted in several publications including Entrepreneur and Research magazines and helps clients achieve their retirement income goals by assisting them with Social Security decisions and distribution options for their employer-sponsored retirement plans, constructing a customized income-generating investment portfolio. Beverly is represented in National and International galleries – Anquilla Island, to name one. She has been published in Artist Magazine, America Artist Magazine, and “Best of Watercolor Painting Texture” by Rockport publications. She has won National and International acclaim for her painting and was cited as a “rising watercolor star” by Artist Magazine. Pettis, Ceceily is a retired hospice and home health social worker with previous history in community and professional theatre in her early adulthood. Theater experience includes 2 years with the now defunct Darn Dinner Theatres under the supervision of owner Howard Wolf, an Internship with The Champlain Shakespeare Theatre of The University of Vermont Regional Theatre Groups. She also served on their respective Boards of Directors. Her background also includes beginning college as a theatre major with the first two years devoted to that major. Ceceily has worked in radio and performed much public speaking in social work and fundraising for not-for-profit organizations. She has participated in Readers Theater at LLI and taught the ABC's of Theatre Performance in Spring 2015. Phillips, Sandi has been teaching Group Exercise in the Richmond area for 20+ years. She is certified in Group Exercise, STEP, Slide, Weight Room Resistance, Pilates, 200 hour Yoga certification (on the way to 500), Barre, Personal Training, and more! She enjoys people, and particularly helping people discover that they are capable of far more than they thought. Sandi is a lifelong resident of Richmond, except for four years in Charlottesville. She is looking forward to meeting many new friends at LLI. Phillips, Sandy has a degree in Music and Music Education, and has been an instructor at LLI for over two years. She has performed in Musicals and in other theatrical productions, as well as directed musicals and accompanied rehearsals. She has a performance degree in both piano and organ, and a minor in vocal production, and has been a church music director, in Illinois and Virginia. Presswalla, Faruk is a retired US Navy captain and retired medical doctor and forensic pathologist. He served as medical examiner in Virginia and New Jersey. Faruk has also served as professor in a number of institutions of higher learning. Primiani, Peter is a licensed Real Estate Broker and has been in commercial real estate for the past 43 years. Peter is a graduate of Iowa State University and resides in Louisa County. He received his first toy train in 1956 and has always been interested in collecting toy trains. Peter collects a wide variety of trains including Lionel, Ives, Marx, American Flyer and European trains. He is currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Ives Train Society, the Eastern Division of the National Train Association. He has also served 15 years on the board for the Virginia Train Collectors in many positions including president for 4 terms. 46 Quarry, Nate "ROCK" made his professional mixed martial arts debut in 2001 and won his first match with a TKO (Triple Knock Out). Subsequent victories earned Mr. Quarry an invitation to appear on The Ultimate Fighter television show. Unfortunately, injuries began to take their toll. Increasing back pain began to limit his ability to work out and began to affect his career. At age 34, he was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease, could no longer lift his little daughter and was told he shouldn’t fight any more. Faced with the end of his career, he underwent minimally disruptive spinal surgery in 2006. Remarkably, he resumed his career by returning to UFC fighting 15 months later. Currently, Mr. Quarry serves as the Ultimate Ambassador and Health and Wellness Coach for The Better Way Back®, a patient education and support program for those who suffer from chronic back or leg pain and may be facing surgery. Rupnik, Sara Kay formerly of Richmond, returns to teach one LLI Writing Workshop this summer. Sara holds a M.F.A. in Writing from Vermont College and is co-founder of Around the Block Writers Collaborative. Her fiction, nominated for a Pushcart Prize, appears in literary journals in the U.S. and the U.K. A collection of her short stories, Women Longing to Fly, is available from Mayapple Press. She teaches creative writing for the Jekyll Island (GA) Arts Association. Ryan, Dana is a second year occupational therapy student at Virginia Commonwealth University. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Virginia Tech in May 2012. Dana enjoys volunteering with people with disabilities, traveling, and spending time at her family’s farm. Sage, Diana lived in NYC for 22 years where she pursued an acting career. Some of the actors with whom she worked are still acting and will occasionally appear on her TV screen – which causes more than a little twinge of envy, she admits. Now, back in her hometown, she is involved with child, pet and senior care. Her first passion is animals – followed closely by acting, singing, dancing, and traveling. Diana has been a member of LLI since 2014 and has been involved in Readers Theater, Funtastics and Tap Dance. Schaffer, Les is a long time LLI instructor and a storyteller. He is an (allegedly) retired licensed professional counselor and grand and great-grandfather. A founding member of both the Tell Tale Hearts Storytellers Theater and Two Tellers Telling, Les presents original, traditional and healing stories in a variety of settings, including concerts, schools, churches, workshops and conferences. As a Counselor, Les worked with children, adolescents and their families, with special emphasis in family substance abuse and domestic violence. Besides his personal storytelling work, he currently cofacilitates a clinical consultation group for therapists and coaches an inner city youth storytelling group. He continues to present popular healing story workshops at professional conferences. Les insists that all his stories are true, even the ones that he makes up. Schulz, Shirlie has had the opportunity to live and work in various places around the world where she has been privileged to participate in discussion groups of differing cultures and societies and to hear issues debated from other perspectives. She has gained an appreciation of meaningful civil discourse and would like to continue these kinds of experiences with her fellows here at LLI. Scimone, Bonnie serves as the Community Outreach and Marketing Specialist for SeniorNavigator. Bonnie has been with SeniorNavigator for over 10 years and has over 30 years of experience in sales, training, and relationship development. She graduated from Longwood University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics and received her Elementary Education Teaching Certificate from Virginia Commonwealth University. Bonnie has one son in Georgia and one daughter in Chesterfield, VA and 5 grandchildren. She resides in the tri city area with her husband while calling Yale, VA (Sussex County) also home. 47 Scimone, Alfred was born in Italy where he received a classical education in Rome and a Doctoral Degree in Statistics. He worked as a Foreign Trade Official until he came to the United States, where he attained a Master’s Degree in Economics From Washington University in St. Louis, MO, and then worked for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in New York, and the U.S. Army as a Professor of Operation Research Analysis in the Army Logistics Management University at Ft. Lee, VA. After retiring from Federal Service, Dr. Scimone continued to teach Mathematics, Statistics and Economics in various local colleges and has begun a writing career. His latest teaching adventures have been teaching Algebra 2 and Economics in High School; and teaching "Conversational Italian" for members of an Italian American Club. Seidel, Eric is also known as Recycle the Clown. He took 2 classes at John Tyler Community College in 1992, Art of Clowning 101 and 102. He is a member of Virginia Clown Alley #3 where he has served as Vice President and President. He also belongs to the World Clown Association and Clown of America International. Eric has enjoyed being a clown for over 22 years! Self, Judy is a native Virginian, has an AB degree in history and an MEd in Supervision of Instruction from the College of William and Mary. Judy taught American History and Civics for 34 years in the Richmond Public Schools. After her retirement from the classroom, she worked for 7 years as a mentor for young teachers in the Richmond Teaching American History Academy, a federally funded grant program. She is fascinated by the First Ladies, the Presidents, their children and pets, and the White House. She is looking forward to sharing her knowledge with the students at LLI. Semtner, Chris is the Curator of the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond, Virginia, Chris Semtner has served as author, co-author, or editor of eight books on Edgar Allan Poe and recently appeared in the BBC 4 documentary Edgar Allan Poe: Love, Death, and Women and the Military Channel program History: Facts vs. Fiction. His most recent book, Edgar Allan Poe’s Richmond, has been nominated for a Library of Virginia Literary Award for Non-Fiction. His next book about the artwork of James Carling, will be released in October 2014. Sheltering Arms at Bon Air, sheltering arms staff Shepherd, Jr., L.E. MSA, as CEO of iPersonal Health Centers™, has founded numerous companies in healthcare, and worked with physicians for over 30 years building practices and ancillary service centers. Mr. Shepherd is a past President of the Society of Professional Business Consultants as well as being certified by The Institute of Certified Professional Business Consultants. He is one of the founding directors of the National Association of Health Care Consultants. He has written articles on practice, financial and tax management for various medical and dental publications. He also has lectured to numerous medical societies, and taught practice, financial and tax management courses through medical and dental residency programs. Mr. Shepherd has extensive experience in Hospitalist Medicine business. Smith, Shep is a native of Richmond. He holds a Bachelor's degree from RPI, now VCU, and a Master's degree from the University of Richmond. He taught American history at Thomas Dale High School in Chesterfield County for over 30 years. Snavely, Mary Anne is the Director of the Pelvic Floor Training Division of The Pelvic Medicine Institute of Virginia, Dr. Nathan Guerette, Urogynecologist. Mary Anne is a native of Midlothian, Virginia and has spent nearly two decades in the Wellness and Fitness industry. Mary Anne’s mission is to spread awareness to women of all ages and educate them about the early warning signs of pelvic floor dysfunctions and what they can do daily to alleviate the occurrence of muscle weakness in the pelvis which leads to incontinence, constipation and other complications. Snow, Kitty is the great-granddaughter of Harris Stilson. Ms. Snow enjoys sharing images and stories based on her great-grandfather’s photos and oral histories of Richmonders who grew up in Richmond's historic neighborhoods. She has written three books, From a Richmond Streetcar, On the West Clay Line, and Up & Down Church Hill based on Stilson's images and stories of life in Richmond when the streetcars ran. Overcoming a cervical disk injury by using the technique, she completed the three year training course to become an Alexander Technique Teacher to share the joy of this proven method with others. She thinks of the Technique as a means for “Finding aLiveness” because it gave her a new lease on a pain-free, more fulfilling life. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts from the College of William and Mary and a Master’s of Science in Mass Communications from Boston University. In 2011, Sara completed STOTTS Pilates training in Essential Mat Pilates. Spencer, Laura is a second year occupational therapy student at Virginia Commonwealth University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Meredith College. Laura enjoys volunteering abroad, which led her to travel to Zimbabwe in 2011 and Ghana in 2014. One of Laura’s favorite parts of her day is walking her beloved hound mix, Olivia. Stock, Kendalle has been in the field of insurance in Chesterfield since 1985. A graduate of High Point University, Kendalle also earned her CLU designation in 1999. She has owned her own multi-line insurance agency, worked in the Long Term Care insurance field, and in group benefits. In 2013, she decided to make Medicare her primary focus, realizing how so many people were overwhelmed and confused by this program. Her passion is to help educate her clients so they understand the options well enough to make informed decisions about this important part of retirement. She found a doorway to her soul that opened the love and strength in her body to become an inspirational Stratton, Lillie is the former owner of Lillie’s Florist in Powhatan, VA, and served as president of the Mid-Atlantic Floral Association for two years. Strmel, Damir is an investment analyst for a privately held wealth management company in Midlothian. He began tai chi play 10 years ago as a means of lessening the effects of a degenerative neurological disease. He began by learning Yang-style tai chi for four years with Nate Mohler, D.O.M. Damir has also studied Yang sword form and Chen and Sun styles of tai chi. His journey through tai chi has brought him many interesting perspectives. Damir is also an avid golfer and enjoys the arts, hiking, and creating music. Talley, Dave is a trained Driver Training volunteer instructor with AARP. Thomas, Elizabeth serves as the Special Events and Communications Manager for the Richmond Animal League, the area’s oldest “no-kill” organization. Toler, Alan is a graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, 1988 and an alumnus of Virginia Military Institute. Awarded Young Optometrist of the Year (1994) for Virginia, he continues to serve as a member of local, state, national optometric associations, and Optometric Extension Program, and a Fellow in the Virginia Academy of Optometry, College of Optometrists in Visual Development and Board Certified in Vision Therapy. Tsuchihashi, Mary learned how to crochet from her grandmother over 60 years ago and has been an LLI Member since 2009. Unetic, Sara holds two Masters Degrees in English, one from The University of London in British Literature and one from The University of Arkansas in American Literature and Grammar. She currently teaches part time honors high school English at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot. 49 von Ruffer, Kristine was born, raised, and educated in Germany and is therefore fluent in German. She utilized this skill as a teacher with the Berlitz School in New Jersey for many years. Kristine is tri-lingual, she is also fluent in Italian after living in Milan, Italy for four years. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Marketing from Handels- & Wirtschaftschule Kaemmerer, Germany. Prior to moving to Richmond, Virginia in 1993 with her husband, Kristine lived in New Jersey for over twenty years with their two daughters. She has extensive international corporate experience as she was the office manager for an import/export business, Tex Inc., for over 10 years, and also held other office manager positions prior/post her tenure at Tex inc. In her free time she enjoys tennis, golf, hiking and classical music. She also volunteers with Richmond Symphony Orchestra League. Wagner, Helene is an award winning screenwriter and playwright. She has had six screenplays optioned by production companies with one cast for CBS. She also worked as a Writers Guild Literary Agent for a number of years. She is the Founder of the Virginia Screenwriters’ Forum, now in its 25st year, and recently retired as VSF Director.. Helene enjoys sharing great movies and PBS Mystery Series to view and to discuss with LLI Students. As her schedule permits, she teaches screenwriting at U of R. She has just completed a new full-length romantic comedy play, "The French Apartment." The play is now under consideration for publication at Samuel French Publishing. Warns, Jim is a HECM Consultant with Security One Lending, one of the largest reverse mortgage direct lenders in the country. In that capacity he deals exclusively with the federally insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) loan program, and focuses on the proactive use of that program in retirement planning. Jim has been in the mortgage industry for 20 years, and owned his own mortgage brokerage company for 10 years before making the decision to focus on reverse mortgages. He has given CE presentations on reverse mortgages to financial advisors, and has also presented to local area agencies on aging, county social service departments and at the Lifelong Learning Institute in Chesterfield. He is a past Vice-Chair and Chairperson of the Chesterfield Council on Aging, a founding board member and Education Director of the RVA Better Aging Forum and an active member of several other senior service-oriented organizations. Jim holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees in business from The College of William & Mary and lives in Richmond. Waskin, Mitchell was born in Philadelphia and attended college at Albright College and Temple University. He received his doctorate in Podiatric Medicine in 1983 from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. During his senior year of medical school he received the American College of Podopediatrics Award for Outstanding Achievement. Dr. Waskin continued his training at Metropolitan Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he completed a surgical residency in foot and ankle surgery. He continued his post graduate education by receiving training in Laser Surgery, Foot & Ankle Arthroscopy, Rigid Internal Fixation and Cryosurgery. In 1988 he received a Virginia Podiatric Medical Association Service Award. Dr. Waskin was board certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery in 1995 and re-certified in 2004. He was selected to sit on multiple peer review committees for the State of Virginia and professional societies. He has been involved in developing criteria for credentialing foot surgeons at several Virginia hospitals. A past president of the Richmond Academy of Podiatric Medicine, Dr. Waskin has lectured to doctors on a variety of topics and is published in the Journal of Foot Surgery. He is affiliated with CJW Medical Center (Chippenham and JohnstonWillis Medical Centers). Wheeler, John hails from Tryon, North Carolina in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains. He graduated from High School in Western Massachusetts and received a BA in pre-law/Political Science from Duke University in 1965. Before retiring, John worked as Director of Information Systems at AT&T International and held the position of Chief Information Officer at WR Grace & Co. He is an avid train collector and expert on vintage toy trains from the 1880's to WWII and is actively involved in the research, history, restoration and use of toy trains and their relationship to the general use of electricity in society. In addition to being on the board of the Virginia Train Collectors, John's knowledge is also used on committees with the National Train Collectors Association. Like many of John's age, his interest in toy trains is a constant reminder of his childhood and his relationship with his father and both past and present friends. 50 Whitfield, Donna is a current member of LLI. She is a former English teacher with Chesterfield County. She started beading over five years ago and specializes in bead weaving. Woods, Nena has a BA in French and Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and has taught all levels of Spanish since 1981. Her latest experience was teaching K-8th grade at the Sabot at Stony Point private school here in Richmond. She has traveled many times to Spain especially the Canary Islands where her mother's family lives. Ylimaki, Karen has been a member of LLI since 2008. She moved to Virginia from Chicago in 2003. She is a "professional volunteer" and is involved in the following organizations: Secretary for Lonesome Dove last four years, Intake Nurse and Volunteer Coordinator for the Free Clinic of Powhatan, Chair of the Anti-Litter Council in Powhatan, Secretary of the War Memorial Cultural Arts and Community Center in Powhatan (a WWII era building that is currently being renovated). York, John is an orthopedist, specializing in disorders of the spine, hip and knee. He received a B.S. in Engineering from Arizona State University, his medical degree at Kirksville College and completed an orthopedics residency at Pinnacle Health Community General in Harrisburg PA. With 15+ years of experience Dr. York is a pioneer in the field of minimally invasive surgery, harnessing its potential to improve patient outcomes. Dr. York grew up in Arizona where he was active in scouting, hiking and camping. He became an Eagle Scout in 1976. His hobbies include running marathons, riding his motorcycle, skiing, his pug dogs and spending time with his bride of 30 years and their three children.
