highlights of buenos aires
Don’t miss out on Buenos Aires’ wealth of attractions, adventures and experiences
A
mong the richest cities in the world
during its early 20th century heyday,
Buenos Aires is South America’s second
largest city and without question one of its
most culturally fascinating. Nicknamed
the ‘Paris of the South’, the city feels more
European than Latin American, with wide
avenues and an eclectic blend of baroque and
neoclassical architecture.
The city’s ‘café culture’ is also one of its
defining elements, and is another aspect
of Buenos Aires’ lifestyle reminiscent of
that of the French capital. A cultural center
brimming with museums, art galleries and
live music, there is also plenty to occupy
daytime and evening, along with a passion for
sport that rivals any on the planet. In addition
to rugby and polo, in which Argentina’s
TEATRO COLON
LA BOMBONERA
TAKE IN A SHOW AT TEATRO COLON
Testament to Argentina’s position as one of the world’s wealthiest cities
at the turn of the 20th century, the Teatro Colón (Columbus Theater)
is a magnificent structure widely regarded as one of South America’s
most elegant edifices. Completed in 1908 and re-opened in early 2010
following a lengthy period of refurbishment, the theater plays host to
all manner of concerts, plays and expositions. A must-see during your
stay in Buenos Aires, ask your concierge for show listings and elite
ticket information.
WATCH BOCA JUNIORS AT LA BOMBONERA
Arguably South America’s most iconic football club, Boca Juniors is
steeped in history. Deeply rooted in the working class neighborhood of
La Boca, the club’s rivalry with more affluent fellow porteño outfit River
Plate makes for one of the most famous derbies in world football. Based
at La Bombonera (the Chocolate Box), with its steep stands and electric
atmosphere courtesy of legendary fan group La Doce (the Twelfth Man),
Boca is the club that gave Diego Maradona his first shot at the big time. A
match day visit is unmissable for fans of the sport.
TANGO
Rojo Tango: Martha Salotti 445

Tango music and dance first began to gain widespread recognition in
working class districts of Buenos Aires and Montevideo in the middle of
the 19th century, with the movement emerging as a fusion between distinct
European and African styles with influences from Cuba and elsewhere in the
Spanish-speaking Americas. Today, the elegant art form is an integral part
of Buenos Aires culture, and there is no better place to witness your first
performance than in the Argentine capital. Expert concierges recommend
the following tango shows, ideal for those seeking an initiation into a central
aspect of the River Plate region’s cultural heritage.

national side is the world’s strongest, Buenos
Aires is home to the highest concentration of
professional football clubs on the planet.
Famed as one of the globe’s finest leather
producers, Argentina’s capital also has much
to offer in terms of shopping. With a wide
selection of small boutique shops and large,
stylish malls, visitors to the city are certain
not to leave empty handed.

IGUAZU FALLS
A TRIP TO IGUAZU FALLS
IGUAZU NATIONAL PARK
Phone: +54 37 5749 1469
Address: Concesionario Area Cataratas del
Parque Nacional Iguazu, N3370XAJ
Website: www.iguazuargentina.com
Straddling the border between Brazil and
Argentina is one of the natural world’s true
wonders. No trip to South America, let alone
Argentina, is complete without a visit to the
marvelous Iguazu Falls. Unlike other famous
waterfalls, which often have just one drop,
Iguazu is breathtaking in its expanse, with
275 separate drops along a 1.7 mile stretch
of the Iguazu River. At 500 feet in width and
almost half a mile in length, Devil’s Throat,
or La Garganta del Diablo in Spanish, is
the largest single cataract in the world and
stands a staggering 270 feet high.
The name Iguazu is derived from the
indigenous Guaraní words for “big” and
”water”, and that effectively sums up the
impression visitors are left with having
spent a day marveling at one of the world’s
most impressive natural sites. Platforms
located inside the Iguazu National Park
on the Argentine side of the border allow
undisturbed views of the falls, where you
can appreciate the full force of nature as up
to 400,000 gallons of water a second pour
into the river below.
The falls were first seen by European eyes
in 1541 when Spanish conquistador Álvar
Núñez Cabeza de Vaca was drawn to the
site by the noise of the gushing water, which
can be heard from a distance of several
kilometers. Guaraní legend dictates that the
natural wonder was created by a vengeful
God who had intended to marry a local
girl named Naipí, who evaded the deity’s
attentions and fled down the river in a canoe
with her mortal lover Tarobá. Stricken, the
god sliced the river in two in a blind rage,
sending the lovers cascading to certain
death and creating the magnificent falls in
the process.
There are national parks affording
spectacular views of the waterfalls on
either side of the Argentine-Brazilian
border, with the entrance to the Argentine
park situated just 11 miles from the town
of Puerto Iguazu. Once inside the park,
visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the
waterfalls from numerous distinct vantage
points, some of which are served by the
‘Ecological Train of the Forest’; a singletrack railway system that ferries visitors
from one point to another. There are also
trails for those that prefer to walk through
the jungle and take in the flora
and fauna.
In addition to the spectacular waterfalls which
are of course the star attraction, the park is
also a designated wildlife reserve, and several
ecological trails covering several miles of
terrain offer a chance to immerse yourself
in nature. The park is home to a diverse and
colorful selection of wildlife, with over 450
species of birds, 80 different mammal species
and innumerable varieties of insects and reptiles.
Aside from being the home of Iguazu Falls,
the ‘three borders region’, as the area where
Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay converge is
known, is also home to the imposing Itaipu
Dam. Straddling the Paraná River between
Brazil and Paraguay and jointly administered
by the two nations’ governments, the dam is
the largest operating hydroelectric facility in
terms of annual generating capacity in the
world. Itaipu generates around 90% of the
electricity consumed by Paraguay and just
under 20% of that used in Brazil and was
completed in 1984.

PLACES TO VISIT
San Telmo
The best show in town right now is Rojo Tango; located at the Cabaret
Restaurant inside the Faena Hotel. With just a hundred sittings a
performance, it ensures an intimate, personalized experience. Rojo
Tango showcases traditional tango in a risqué fashion, this being the
main difference between Rojo and other tango shows. Another option
for those seeking an initiation into tango is Esquina Carlos Gardel,
located in the Abasto neighborhood. It is a very traditional show where
the performers represent the evolution of tango. The orchestra at
Esquina Carlos Gardel is also excellent. In addition to these shows,
Gala Tango in San Telmo is another popular option. Here visitors
are treated to tango and the show also features a representation of
Evita, complete with her famous speech, folk music from the north
of Argentina and a gaucho dancing malambo with ‘boleadoras’ too. If
you prefer to see a little bit of everything this is a good option. Tango
classes are available for the more adventurous.
La Catedral Metropolotana
La Catedral Metropolotana is definitely worth a visit as it is one of the most
beautiful buildings in all of Buenos Aires. The neoclassical structure is located
at the front of Plaza de Mayo at the intersection of San Martin and Rivadavia.

and be seen. Many of Buenos Aires’ most exclusive
shops are located in the Palermo Soho subdivision,
a chic, bohemian enclave of cafés, restaurants and
boutiques where some of the finest shopping in
the city is concentrated. For those wishing to take
a break from shopping, Palermo is also home to
the Argentine Polo Grounds (Campo Argentino de
Polo), and the largest Japanese gardens to be found
anywhere outside the Asian nation.

Founded more than a decade ago and drawing
on a history dating back to 1920, Simonetta
Orsini is the Argentine capital’s jewelry store
par excellence, with an unbeatable selection
of wares from the world’s leading brands.
The Petit Palais boutique located in Recoleta
is renowned as one of the foremost places to
purchase such finery in the whole of South
America, featuring jewelry and watches
from international heavyweights such as
Cartier and Chanel, as well as offerings
from local brands that may catch your eye.
With additional outlets located nearby on
Calle Posadas, and slightly further afield in
fashionable Belgrano, there is no excuse for
leaving a trip to Simonetta Orsini off your
Buenos Aires itinerary.

No trip to Buenos Aires would be complete
without sampling some of Argentina’s
famous leather products, held in high esteem
worldwide and generally considered to be
among the best in the world. The export
of leather was central to the growth of
Argentina’s economy in the late 19th century,
and today some of the most highly regarded
leather goods in the world can be found in the
nation’s capital. Shops selling such products
abound, however we feel the following are the
best the city has to offer:

Buenos Aires’s premier shopping mall, with
the Bullrich containing a wide variety of
outlets offering high quality goods from some
of the world’s most desirable brands, with
the advantage of being located right in the
heart of the city. As well as offering quality
shopping opportunities, the mall has several

of two bustling streets, the narrow, pedestrianized
Calle Florida and the enormous, Manhattan-esque
Avenida Córdoba, Galerías Pacífico offers style
and convenience to those searching for everything
under one roof. Housed in a magnificent building
that has been listed as a historic national monument
since 1989, the mall is perfectly in keeping with the
reputation of the neighborhood of Recoleta as an
upmarket destination replete with high class shopping
and dining facilities. Pacífico first opened in 1992
and features stores from internationally recognized
brands, including Christian Lacroix and Polo Ralph

moved into a different league when Alto Palermo

places to buy luxury goods in Buenos Aires. With
a focus on attracting female shoppers, the mall
offers a pleasant alternative to browsing the
boutiques in Recoleta or Palermo itself, shielding
those in search of that special something from
the elements, while at the same time offering
variety and unquestionable quality. Alto Palermo
celebrated its 20th birthday in 2010 and, featuring
stores such as Christian Lacroix, Dior and Calvin

array of cafés and restaurants provides a perfect

WHEN BEST TO GO
The spring months September - November and
the fall from March - May are the best times to
visit Buenos Aires.
The summer months, while gloriously sunny,
tend to be stiflingly hot, and many residents of
the city flock to the beachside resorts of Mar del
Plata in Buenos Aires Province or Punta del Este
in Uruguay to escape the hot weather. Freezing
cold winters mean that the spring and fall are the
optimum seasons to spend time in Buenos Aires.
LANGUAGE
Rioplatense Spanish (Castellano). English
sometimes spoken, but basic Spanish is useful.

DRESS AND CUSTOMS
Buenos Aires attire for tourists is western.
However, in sacred sites such as churches, it
is best to wear clean, long-sleeve shirts, pants
and closed-toed shoes. Evenings can be colder
than expected even if the day has been mild.
A smoking ban officially in place is not
observed in many establishments. If you are
invited to any family home, it is considered
courtesy to bring a small gift for the hosts.
LOCAL TIME/BUSINESS HOURS
Argentina is three hours behind GMT with no
daylight saving hour. Shops and businesses
tend to remain open until late in the evening,
shutting their doors at around 9 -10pm in
many cases.
Argentinians eat their evening meal much
later than is customary in Europe. It is
common to see restaurants packed with
diners well after midnight, and clubbing does
not get going until after 2am at the earliest.
