Dear Guests,
Welcome aboard Royal Brunei Airlines (RB). In
this issue of Muhibah, we celebrate the 40th
anniversary of the first flight of RB on 14 May, 1975.
On the first day of operations, RB flew to Singapore
and Kota Kinabalu, and then to Hong Kong on the
following day. On the anniversary date itself, we
will mark this auspicious event with a traditional
blessing ceremony in Brunei. We will be also be
hosting similar events for our business partners
and travel agents in Singapore, Kota Kinabalu and
Hong Kong.
In addition, over 300 energetic staff members will
get to test their athletic skills in a special RB 40th
Anniversary Games which is also scheduled to take
place in May.
For your reading pleasure, I invite you to take a trip
down memory lane with us in the pages that follow.

On the fleet side of our operations, we continue
to look forward to the arrival of two new Airbus
A320 aircraft into service in the second half of
this year. These aircraft will contain the very
latest in passenger comfort and amenity and will
provide a sneak preview of what to expect with
our new generation A320 NEO fleet in 2017.
As always, I would like to conclude with a sincere
word of thanks to you for flying with RB today
and, for our part, we will continue do our best to
earn your support in the future.
At RB, we are very conscious of the tradition of
hospitality and customer service which we have
inherited from our predecessors. We take very
seriously our commitment to continue to build on
that rich heritage from the past.

REBRANDED OFFICES AND UNIFORMS
RB launched its newly refurbished and rebranded office
in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore on 5 and 12 March, 2015
respectively. The event also provided an opportunity to
showcase the new RB heritage inspired uniform to be proudly
worn by our customer service staff. The warm spectrum of
the uniform’s colours, ranging from Olive to Morning Sky and
Fresh Mint together with the new vibrant office layout, were all
designed to reflect the friendly and welcoming nature of the
people of Brunei Darussalam and the RB brand.

A signing ceremony was held on 25 March,
2015, for two young Bruneian men; Hj Ahmad

selected out of hundreds of applicants for
RB’s Cadet Pilot Intake 44 programme. The
ceremony also signed on 12 talented locals
for the 27th Intake for RB’s Engineering

RB WELLNESS PROGRAMME
RB collaborated with Fitness Zone health club to
introduce a healthy work life balance programme called
‘RB Staff Wellness Program’. The programme runs every
fortnightly from 21 March, 2015, held either at Fitness
Zone or Royal Brunei Recreational Club for all RB staff.
Participants will benefit from nutritional health talks,
aerobic sessions and strength training programmes.
Both RB and Fitness Zone hope that the initiative will
help RB staff lead a healthier work life.

There are many options for cycling
adventures in Bali. You can ride along the
main road through the many Ubud tourist
areas, or get a little bit more adventurous
and do a cross country ride from villages
at the rim of Mount Batur down to Berawa
beach. Along the way, your ride will
bring you past bamboo groves, coconut
plantations, coffee orchards, strawberry
farms and gardens where exotic spices
grow. For the more experienced, the trail
can also include a ride on a volcano path
on Mount Abang, made up of volcanic
ash and stones from the last eruption.
There is a ride from Jati Luwih to the
sea that will take you to some stunning
landscape of terraced padi fields.
Jatih Luwih was recently listed as a
World Heritage Site by UNESCO for
its preservation of traditional Balinese
farming techniques. Riding from Mount
Batur to Ubud lets you through the area
featured in the movie ‘Eat, Pray, Love’.
Then there’s the Volcano Trail for some
extreme riding. You start at the island’s
volcanic core, through steep gradients
and undulating descents that are just
too thrilling to ignore.

Key highlights this year will include the SEA Games (5-16
June, 2015) and National Day Parade (9 August, 2015),
while the opening of the National Gallery Singapore and
the launch of the SG50 Jubilee Walk in November 2015
will close the year of festivities.

Singapore is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its
independence this year. And the island nation is having a
no-holds-barred celebration with year-long programmes
that kicked off since last year.
But what’s unique about the SG50 celebrations is that
the variety of national and community programmes are
planned and organised by Singaporeans, supported by
the SG50 Celebrations Fund. The Fund provides support
to Singaporeans who initiate projects to commemorate
and celebrate Singapore’s 50th birthday.
Ideas that inspire a sense of community or belonging to
Singapore, and encourage Singaporeans to celebrate
together qualify for this funding. Hence, visitors to
Singapore during the Golden Jubilee celebration will
witness many activities that celebrate and aspire to show
guests Singapore’s caring society, its rich multi-cultural
and multi-racial heritage, its achievements in arts and
sports, and all the places around Singapore that hold a
special place in the islanders’ hearts.

For instance, Singapore – Inside Out (now till November
2015) is an international showcase that presents crossdisciplinary works of local talents across a spectrum
of the creative industries and disciplines. Some of the
featured sectors include architecture, design, fashion,
film, food & beverage, literary, and performing and visual
arts. Set in a specially designed modular structure, the
showcase debuted in Beijing (22-26 April, 2015), before
heading to London (24-28 June, 2015) and New York
(23-27 September, 2015). Each international presentation
will last for five days, while the homecoming finale in
Singapore (27 November-6 December, 2015) will be an
extended 10-day presentation.
The Five Stars Project (9 July, 2015-11 January, 2016)
at The Singapore Art Museum is a contemporary art
project that will bring together five visual art luminaries
of Singapore to re-visit Singapore’s founding values of
democracy, peace, justice, progress and equality. Looking
to the Singapore flag as a point of departure, the project
will consist of two components – an exhibition of core
values as represented by the five stars on the Singapore
flag, and a complementary outreach programme as
represented by the crescent moon.

FEATURES
On Singapore National Day Parade (9 August, 2015), visitors can
expect to see Parades and spectacular fireworks displays. This
momentous Golden Jubilee event will take place at the Padang,
the site of many historically significant moments over the past
50 years, including the declaration of Singapore’s independence.
There will also be mass engagement activities that will be held
in the Marina Bay area, such as Families for Life picnics at the
Marina Barrage, and aerial display performances by the Republic
of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) Black Knights Team.
The Jubilee Weekend (7-10 August, 2015) will also see Gardens
by the Bay coming to life with a floral depiction of Singapore’s
Story and a SG50 edition of the Garden Rhapsody music and
light show. The Singapore Botanic Gardens will host a series of
activities from 7 to 9 August showcasing the rich cultural and
botanical heritage of the Gardens and shared memories of the
Gardens as a much-loved civic space.

The opening of National Gallery Singapore (October 2015) will
appeal to art lovers. This brand new visual arts institution will
showcase a large public collection of visual arts from South East
Asia and Singapore from the 19th century to the present day.
Through a comprehensive collection, the Gallery will present the
development of Singapore and regional cultures, so as to tell
the story of their social, economic and political histories. The
National Gallery Singapore will also commemorate Singapore’s
50 years of independence with the Art Connector, a permanent
aesthetic sheltered walkway that links City Hall MRT along North
Bridge Road and Coleman Street to the entrance of the Gallery,
which officially opens next year.
Finally, mark your calendar for Jubilee Walk (November 2015).
The Jubilee Walk is a trail that connects the past, present and
future elements of the Singapore Story together through a
special trail and monument markers that will be a lasting physical
legacy of Singapore’s Jubilee year. The Walk begins from the
National Museum, situated at Fort Canning Hill where the 14th
century kingdom of Temasek was seated, marking the republic’s
early beginnings as a trading hub. It continues through the Civic
District, including the former and present Parliament House
and Empress Place along the Singapore River, and around the
Esplanade Park and Padang in front of which are the former City
Hall and former Supreme Court. Maps and mobile applications
will be developed to guide the public along the trail, which is
about 8 kilometres.

Celebrating the best of colonial Malaya at
the Colonial Cafe.

There is no better journey that could transport
you to the days of old Malaya than through an
epicurean adventure. At The Majestic Hotel Kuala
Lumpur’s Colonial Cafe, the halcyon days of the
planters of Malaya is recreated, along with a menu
that offers authentic classical colonial cuisine.
It’s a cuisine that merges two culinary cultures in
ways that have made the food unique in taste and
flavour profile. These are traditional British meals
that the Hainanese chefs attempted to recreate
when they worked in English households in Malaya.
Using local ingredients, a meal such as roasted
chicken gets translated into the Hainanese Chicken
Chop. Colonial Cafe’s interpretation is a beautiful
golden, deep-fried succulent thigh dressed in an
onion-infused gravy, sprinkled with green peas. Let
the gravy linger a little and you’ll be able to taste
the earthy tones of the Worcestershire sauce – a
nod to a classic British kitchen must-have.
The Old-Style Hainanese Chicken Rice Ball is
another perennial favourite. Apart from the
wholesome flavourful rice, Colonial Cafe has
cleverly retained its hand-pressed, spherical-shape
presentation, harking back to the times when
the rice-ball meals were transported as such for
the convenience of the people working in the
plantations. Meanwhile, the Traditional Hainanese
Boiled Beef is a classic example of blending the
virtues of Asian and Western cooking styles. Here
fresh noodles swim in aromatic beef soup that is
warm, satisfying and full of flavour. The choice of
tender beef – brisket, back-ribs or sirloin – pays
homage to the British cuisine that places emphasis
on meats and its distinctive cuts.

Then there are the British classic game cookery, pies
and puddings, featuring Traditional Beef Wellington,
Spotted Dick and English Trifle. The Mulligatawny
Soup, a glorious Indian-spiced soup that the British
sometimes thickened with rice and meat, is a throwback
to another time; fantastically rich and comforting at the
same time.
A daily set menu is now available for both lunch and
dinner throughout the week and customers can choose
to have either a 3-course or a 4-course meal. The
menus change daily and include a starter, main course
and dessert. Each day features different favourites for
the main course such as the Prime Rib of Angus Beef
with Yorkshire Pudding, Pepper Crusted Roast Rack
of Lamb, Roast Atlantic Cod Fish and Traditional Beef
Wellington.
An example of a delightful Saturday set lunch is
Homemade Lobster Bisque followed by Classic Fish
and Chips with Homemade Fries, Mushy Peas and
Pickled Onions; Warm Bread and Butter Pudding served
with Hazelnut Ice Cream; and coffee or tea that makes
a perfect ending. The three course set lunch or dinner
is priced at RM90 ++ per person while the four course
set lunch or dinner is available at RM 120++ per person.

Watching the mixed herds of zebra,
giraffe, ostrich and rhinoceros wander
across the Savannah, it’s hard to believe
that we left the bright lights and urban
vibe of Melbourne just half an hour
ago. But here we are, in a 225 hectare
outdoor animal playground of Werribee
Zoo, the biggest zoo in Victoria.
The beautiful landscaping is undeniable
and there are many opportunities for
great walks down along the Werribee
River with fantastic play spaces and
lawns for children to enjoy. But we’re
leaving that for later. For now, at the top
of our must do list is the Safari Bus Tour.
This is the tour that takes visitors
through the arid plains and wide range
of animal habitats. Over the course

This two-day tour from Liverpool takes you into the
peaks and lakes of Snowdonia National Park. Start
with an hour and 50 minute drive that heads south
to pick up the A5, the smoothest route through its
towering peaks and a testament to the talent of
famed engineer Thomas Telford.
You will also pass another monument to British
ingenuity – the impressive Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
that carries a canal dizzyingly high over the River
Dee. Then it’s into the park and the pretty village of
Betws-y-Coed with its varied craft shops. The road
over Pen-y-Pass takes you through some of Britain’s
most majestic views, including the highest mountain
in Wales – and England – Snowdon.
On the far side of the park (an hour without
stopping) lies the curious village of Portmeirion,
the Italian-style vision of architect Sir Clough
Williams-Ellis. Stay in luxury at Castell Deudraeth
Hotel and enjoy matchless views across Cardigan
Bay. Driving back via the north coast, you soon reach
Porthmadog where you can board a steam train
ride on the Welsh Highland Railway. History is also
preserved in stone, with the formidable ramparts of
Caernafon Castle (half an hour from Porthmadog)
and the mile-long town walls of Conwy (another half
hour) to admire before you head back to England.

Marking its anniversary celebrations, the airline has a lot to celebrate today.
The impending arrival of two new A320NEO aircraft into service in the
second half of 2015 will enable RB to maintain its young and modern fleet.

McLaren’s new 650S ‘Le Mans’ limited edition
celebrates 20 years since F1 GTR won in France.

Every one of the 106 models of the McLaren F1 built has a story
to tell, with those wearing a ‘GTR’ badge boasting a lineage back
to one of the most famous results in the history of the 24 Hours
of Le Mans. As the chequered flag fell at the end of the 1995
race, five McLaren F1 GTRs crossed the line to finish 1st, 3rd,
4th, 5th and 13th. In honour of this achievement, five special
editions of the McLaren F1, badged the McLaren F1 LM, were
commissioned – one for each of the cars that finished.
Twenty years on, McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has
released the first details of a special edition 650S, built to
celebrate the anniversary of this result. Only 50 McLaren 650S
Le Mans will be available globally, with a design inspired by the
race-winning #59 McLaren F1 GTR. Deliveries will commence
later this year.
Designed by MSO in consultation with Peter Stevens, the
designer of the iconic McLaren F1, the McLaren 650S Le Mans
will be offered as a coupe only, and will borrow a number of
styling enhancements from the iconic race-winner, most notably
the roof-mounted ‘snorkel’ air intake. This fully-integrated
‘snorkel’ channels airflow to the familiar 3.8-litre twin turbo V8
engine, while also providing enhanced aural drama within the
cabin; the front wings featuring subtle louvres to reduce pressure
over the front wheels, increasing downforce.
The unique ‘Le Mans Edition’ lightweight wheels – 19-inch at
the front, 20-inch at the rear – are styled around the design of
the motorsport rims fitted to the 1995 racers. The rims wear the
McLaren-developed Pirelli P Zero™ Corsa tyres and are mounted
in front of carbon ceramic brakes as standard, with McLaren
Orange callipers.
Commenting on the McLaren 650S Le Mans, Stevens explains:
“The design of the McLaren F1 rewrote the rulebook. It was
intended to offer the ultimate, no compromise road driving
experience. The fact that it was transformed into a racer, and
a race winner, was true testament to the strength and integrity
of the original design, which is something I am very proud of.
With a mix of subtle design traits, the 650S Le Mans adds a
modern twist by blending the iconic lines of the McLaren F1, and
heritage features such as the wing louvres and the roof-mounted
air intake, with groundbreaking technologies. It is a fantastic
homage to that original design, and to the incredible race result
achieved by the team in 1995 at one of the most difficult, and
most challenging races in the world.”
Power and torque figures for the McLaren 650S Le Mans remain
unchanged from the standard production model, producing
650PS (641 bhp) and 678 Nm (500 lb ft) of torque. This sprint
from zero to 62 mph is achieved in three seconds and the top
speed is 207 mph. Visual carbon fibre features throughout
the limited edition model, including the front splitter and rear

You have lost 20kg, maybe even more
now. How hard has it been to keep the
weight off ?
It’s all about healthy balanced lifestyle,
not about weight loss. I wanted to be
healthy so I could run around with my
kids, so I continue to eat the healthy
Hellenic way and exercise to stay fit.
Matt and Gary seem to want you to
fatten up again. What do you think
about this? Or are you trying to get
them to follow your lead instead?
I’m definitely influencing them to be
healthy and fit; it’s easy to over indulge
but then you need to work it off! In
saying that, we all love our sweets and
if it’s delicious – it’s hard to resist. Just
work it off later, I say!
You have recently said that margarine
should be banned – if it were up
to you, what are 3 foods everyone
should eat everyday?
It’s all about eating whole food, and real
food. Eat what’s in season and try to eat
local whenever possible. Avoid eating
processed food. Always know what
you’re eating!
You own seven restaurants, and
have had to close a couple. What
advice would you give to aspiring
restaurateurs hoping to enter the
industry?
Do what you love but remember to
always surround yourself with good
people that compliment your own
skills. For me it’s always about the
small details.
What do you enjoy the most about
being a judge on MasterChef
Australia?
I love hanging out with my friends Gary
and Matt everyday, it’s awesome; we
talk about food all day. The show has
also been able to teach people how to
cook and educate children about food,
where it comes from.
With MasterChef Australia in its
seventh season, can we expect
anything new?
The challenges are always new, the
contestants’ skills are always better
and better when they come on the
show, so we always have to up the
ante to make things challenging.
There are some really great cooks
in this series already.
What’s your next big project?
I’m currently working on my next
cookbook which will be out this
year. We’d be done with MasterChef
Australia Season Seven by the time
you read this. I’d be opening a new
place Mastic. The Good Food Store,
where I’ll be serving food I want to eat
– healthy Hellenic food.

Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAG)
Various countries have implemented
restrictions on the carriage of liquids,
aerosols and gels in compliance with new
guidelines set by the International Civil
Aviation Organization (ICAO). Passengers
transiting through airports and carrying any
liquids, pastes and gels in containers over
100ml may be asked to dispose of the items
at security checkpoints.
These restrictions may affect your ability to
carry duty-free purchases onboard the aircraft.
Customers are advised to check with duty free
personnel before making their purchases. All
liquids, aerosols and gels must be carried in
containers of no greater than 100ml/3.3oz
capacity (approximately 100gm in weight)
and placed in a transparent, resealable plastic
bag. The plastic bag must be removed from
carry on baggage and presented to security
personnel at the checkpoint for inspection
and separate x-ray screening.
Exceptions to the new regulations are
medicines and dietary supplements needed
during a flight, including baby food. Proof of
need may be required.
Use of Electronic Equipment
Mobile phones cannot be used at any time
during the flight. They should be switched
off as soon as the cabin crew makes the

Brunei International Airport’s computerised
passenger and cargo handling facilities
can handle 1.5 million passengers and
50,000 tonnes of cargo a year. Among the
facilities offered at the airport are a prayer
room, telephones and internet services,
restaurants, a viewing gallery and day rooms
for transit passengers who want to rest or
freshen up before their flight.
For customers’ comfort and convenience,
Royal Brunei Airlines’ Service Centre and
SkyLounge are both located on the departure
level. The former is a one-stop centre providing

who book online can get their tickets at the
SkyLounge before departure. Royal Skies

For Royal Brunei’s Business Class passengers

120 people. Complimentary massage chairs,
shower rooms, ablution areas, and widescreen

Visas* Austrian, German, Malaysian,
Singaporean, British nationals with the
right of abode in the United Kingdom, The
Netherlands and New Zealand nationals
are exempted from the requirement to
obtain a visa for visits not exceeding
30 days. American passport holders
can enter Brunei Darussalam for three
months without visas. For nationals
of Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France,
Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg,
Republic of Maldives, Norway, Oman, The
Philippines, South Korea, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland, Thailand and The Principality
of Liechtenstein — visas are waived for 14day visits. Nationals of Australia are issued
visas on arrival at the Brunei International
Airport for visits not exceeding 30 days.
All other visitors entering Brunei
Darussalam must have visas obtainable
from any Brunei Darussalam diplomatic
mission abroad. These visas are normally
issued for a two-week stay but can be
renewed in Brunei. Visitors must hold
onward tickets and sufficient funds to
support themselves while in the country.

from the capital. Taxis, car rentals and

Currency The Brunei dollar is on a
par with the Singapore dollar, which is
also accepted in Brunei. Banks, hotels
and many department stores will cash
traveller’s cheques.
Language Malay is the official language
but English is widely used. Other languages
include Chinese and its dialect variants and
other indigenous dialects. Although the
official religion is Islam, other faiths including
Christianity and Buddhism are practised.
Clothing Light clothing is advisable as
the climate is generally warm and humid.
Women are requested to dress modestly
in keeping with local customs.

Media Radio Television Brunei has nightly
news bulletins and a range of popular
entertainment in both English and Malay.
Cable network and Malaysian television
programmes can also be received. There
are three local daily newspapers namely:
Borneo Bulletin (English), The Brunei
Times (English) and Media Permata
(Malay). Other regional and international
publications are also available at newstands.
Food For the adventurous, the food
stalls offer Malay favourites, such as
satay (barbecued meat on a skewer)
and local dishes prepared with curry or
coconut milk. Chinese, European and
Indian cuisines are also available. All F&B
businesses, including hotel restaurants,
close for Friday prayer 12pm to 2pm.
For hotel guests, room service dining
operates as usual.
Hotels Accommodation in the capital
ranges from international standard to
middle range hotels. Service apartments
are also available at reasonable rates.
Shopping Department stores and shops
offer goods ranging from cosmetics and
stereos to local handicrafts such as the
keris (an ornamental dagger), miniature
brass cannons, and kain tenunan, a cloth
woven with gold or silver threads.

Customs and Courtesy
• In mosques, visitors should remove their
shoes and should not pass in front of
people at prayer. A woman should ensure
that her head, knees and arms are covered
before entering mosques. Robes are
provided at the entrance to the mosque.
• A Bruneian shakes hands lightly and
brings his hands to his chest. Members
of the opposite sex do not shake hands.
• It is impolite to point with the index
finger (use the right thumb instead) or
to beckon someone with fingers and
palm facing upwards. Instead the whole
hand should be waved with palm facing
downwards. The right fist should never
be smacked into the left palm.
• Gifts, particularly food, are passed with
the right hand.

The Sultanate has four districts: Brunei-Muara

Islamic history that dates back some 1,500 years.
Today, Brunei remains the world’s only Malay Islamic
Monarchy with an unbroken royal lineage that has

Brunei Darussalam’s iconic landmark, the
mosque was completed in 1958 and is
named after the 28th Sultan, the late Sultan
Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien, who is referred to as
the Architect of Modern Brunei.
