While Ride Guide remains the most complete listing of bicycle events, rides, races and resources in the state, we have given it a fresh design and added some new feature stories. Moving forward, it is our plan to expand the content of future Ride Guides. Page through this edition and I think you will agree that the sheer number and diversity of events in this Ride Guide are a testimony to how great bicycling is in Wisconsin. The Tour of America’s Dairyland is now the biggest road racing series in the country. The Wisconsin Off-Road Series has been the biggest mountain bike race series in the US for years. The list of trails in the back resource section gets longer every year, as does the list of more than 250 other bicycle events. With so much to choose from, you may have a hard time deciding where to ride on any given weekend. What a nice problem to have! www.wisconsinbikefed.org Board of Directors Chris Kegel/Chair Krista Rettig/Vice Chair Brien Christopherson/Treasurer Brian Anderson/Secretary Spencer Black Ted Galloway Mary Ebeling William Hauda Kevin Moore Kierstin Kloeckner 2 The Wisconsin Bike Fed Gary Peterson Michael Rewey John Siegert David Waters Robbie Webber Steve Weinstein Ed Zappen Executive Director Wisconsin Bike Fed Madison Office 409 E Main St., Suite 203 Madison, WI 53703 608-251-4456 Milwaukee Office, 3618 W. Photo by Peter DiAntoni 2012 Ride Guide 3 by Dave Schlabowske That’s more than deer hunting! Between our bike industry, tourism, the hundreds of yearly cycling events and our reputation for great trails, cycling in Wisconsin is an economic powerhouse. The engine started in 1967 when we constructed the Elroy-Sparta Trail, the nation’s first rail trail. Since then, we have continued to be a national leader in trails (and in the amount of money we generate from bicycling). It is now possible to ride 185 miles from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River almost entirely on nearly flat rail trails. For a completely different experience, you can pedal the rolling trails that wind through verdant state forests, past crystal clear lakes from Boulder Junction to Sayner in Vilas County. You might just see more bikes there than boat trailers now as cycling lures people to the Northwoods like Muskies to a J-II Jointed Rapala. The number of trails listed in the resource section of this Ride Guide now stands at 42, up from 39 last edition. Communities across the state are investing in new trails and extending their existing trails because they get such a positive return from bicycling. Bicycling brings in tourism dollars, creates jobs, saves people money, improves health and quality of life. Despite the huge return on such a small investment, federal funding programs for cycling are threatened, all state funds for bicycling were cut from our last state budget and Madison is the only local municipality in Wisconsin that has a capital budget for bicycle projects. The Bike Fed needs your help to defend our great tradition of cycling in Wisconsin. Share the great story that is Wisconsin cycling with your friends, coworkers and especially your elected representatives. Remind them that for a very small investment we get a tremendous return. Let’s not lose what we all love. You are the Bike Fed. You are the engine. Photo by Peter DiAntoni 4 The Wisconsin Bike Fed 2012 Ride Guide 5 isconsin is the center of the bicycle industry in the United States, and from high tech carbon race bikes to hand crafted lugged steel, it is no exaggeration to say the best bikes are built right here. Story by Dave Schlabowske Photos of Ellis Cycles by Peter DiAntoni Additional photos courtesy Trek Bicycles 6 The Wisconsin Bike Fed Looking for a custom hand-built bike sized to fit you like a glove? You could do no better than to talk to Dave Wages, the builder behind Ellis Cycles in Waterford, WI. Dave and I met when we briefly worked together at Waterford Precision Cycles. I stayed just long enough to get dangerous with a torch. Dave came to Waterford from Serotta, already an accomplished frame builder. By the time he left Waterford to start Ellis Cycles in 2008, he was perhaps the cleanest and most meticulous builder I have ever seen. Whether you want a randonneuring bike to enter Paris-Brest-Paris, a road bike with clearance for fat tires for gravel 2012 Ride Guide 7 DNR_RideGuide_ad08 road racing or a track bike that corners like a Nascar, Dave’s bespoke frames will fit you like a Savile Row suit and look just as impressive. Dave builds alone at his home shop in Waterford, but relies on Jason Sanchez in Milwaukee to finish his frames with paint like glass. Dave’s modern interpretations of the classic steel bicycle combined with Jason’s artistry have resulted in wins at the National Handbuilt Bicycle Show every year he has entered. In 2009 he won Best Lugged Bike, in 2010 it was Best of Show, 2011 Best Road Frame, and this year an Ellis bike won Best Steel Bicycle. Dave is the Lance Armstrong of NAHBS. Lance rode a carbon fiber Trek, built in Waterloo, WI for each of his record 7 wins in the Tour de France. As soon as Lance retired, Luxembourger Andy Schleck picked up the mantel and recorded a win on a Trek Madone. You may not have Lance’s VO2 max or be able to pump out 500 watts the whole way up Alp d’ Huez, but you can ride the exact same bike he did, a Madone 6.9 SSL. The legendary 6 Series has claimed 9 of the last 12 Tour de France victories. Loaded with the best tech available, completely customizable, Madones are hand built by 47 bike loving craftsmen right here in Waterloo, WI. Trek’s flagship 6 Series embodies all the qualities a pro-tour rider demands, but you don’t have to be a pro to ride: precise steering, instant acceleration, long-ride comfort, hand-built quality, and personal customization. If you order your bike through Trek’s Project 1 program, you can even get virtually any custom paint scheme of you can imagine. From high-tech carbon racing machines to the modern steel classics, if you are at the point in your life where you want to treat yourself to the bike of your dreams, you can take pride in knowing it is built in Wisconsin. 3/3/08 1:46 PM Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources the beautiful state trails of Wisconsin!
