The event was held in the resort town of Newark, NJ with a fine view of the airport and the brewery down the street. The meeting focused on the changing dynamics of BMW as a product and how our club needs to adapt to meet those changes, but more on that in a moment. I had elected to drive to the conference instead of flying, since it is less than a four hour drive vs. the mayhem of the airport. I mentioned this to a friend at the gym, and he was incredulous that I would “waste” all that time driving. Before I could answer, he began to tell me that he would much rather read a book, newspaper, text, anything other than driving for that amount of time. Well, I was a bit taken aback at that, given that I love to drive; but then I thought, people are different and that is what makes us humans beautiful and creative. I mentioned to my friend about the research I had seen for autonomous vehicles (AVs) — cars that drive themselves — and he excitedly told me he will buy one as soon as they are available. It seems AVs aren’t that far off, and many other automated features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure aids and even emergency braking in the event of a potential collision are available on some cars today. It makes me wonder if the majority of “vehicles” on the road in fifty years will be AVs, or perhaps even in twenty. Is it possible that some day “driving” will be an activity “too dangerous” for humans to do? In the future will we merely be allowed to select our destination on a screen and then sit back while our personal cocoon takes us where we want to go while we read on a digital tablet or watch Iron Man XXIV on a 3-D screen? If any of this comes to pass, what will the car makers build? A luxury Touring Salon appointed with a 3-D theatre and reclining leather seats? It makes me wonder how car companies will change their product lines to suit such a drastic lifestyle change, and will there still be a need for an “Ultimate Driving Machine?” I hope so. As I mentioned at the beginning, at our regional BMW CCA meeting we were told that the BMW CCA is concerned that we need to adapt to the wider product line that BMW makes. The goal is to insure that our chapter events are welcoming to all our members and include as many diverse events as possible; because the club is, after all, about the people first and cars second. I feel strongly that the Boston Chapter is working hard to meet this goal. The chapter leadership team has set up a wide range of events, which hopefully will include one or more events of interest to all of you out there. Please, check out the calendar. However, if you have an idea for an event type that you don’t see, send me a note through the web site, and we’ll see if we can make it happen. In the meantime, spring is here and for all of you who enjoy driving, get in your “Ultimate Driving Machine”(certainly not your autonomous vehicle) and go for a drive. Driving is a joy and the open road awaits. So tell a friend, pass it on. ♦ The Ultimate Calendar: An overview of upcoming events REGISTERING FOR AN EVENT? Tremblant, Canada Friday, July 19th to Sunday 21st S et your calendars for the Ultimate Family Vacation – the 15th Annual Boston Chapter/ Quebec Chapter Bimmers Across the Border XV - Driving School at the incredible Le Circuit Mont Tremblant and Tremblant Resort. The setting is the European-style resort village Mont Tremblant nestled in the splendor of the Laurentian Mountains; Mont Tremblant is located just 90 miles northwest of Montréal. This is the perfect vacation getaway for the entire family. The driving enthusiasts’ have the world class racetrack and everyone else has a world class resort all within a radius of only 2 miles! Come early, stay late, and bring your friends … you can easily spend a week without getting bored. The area features fine restaurants, shopping, and over 100 miles of protected trails for biking, skateboarding, and roller blading. There are two great golf courses, an aquatics center and spa, and a beautiful lake with a large beach. There are activities for the entire family. The Track: Built in 1964 in the shadow of the majestic MontTremblant, the picturesque and twisty 15-corner 2.65-mile track was completely rebuilt and upgraded in 2001. It is two meters wider all around with extensive runoff areas everywhere. Le Circuit MontTremblant has been upgraded to meet FIA vintage Formula racing safety standards. If you loved the track before, you won’t believe it now! Situated in one of the most gorgeous settings in the world for a race track, the layout is a classic, as it combines the natural topography of the site with elevation changes from the start/finish line, to corner 8 and back again. The track is bordered by Lake Moore and Devil River (La Diable). We have worked very hard to provide an exceptional amount of track time each day. Advanced solo students will get 2.5 hours of track time each day on Saturday and Sunday and over 3.5 hours on Friday (if you sign up for the additional day). All other groups will get over 2.5 hours of track time each Saturday and Sunday with a bit more time for soloed intermediate students possible on Sunday afternoon. Please note: there is an imposed sound limit of 92db and the 30 car limit per session for this event. Registration: This is our premiere event of the year. Please use the Online Registration system to register for this event, but remember: All students may register for Saturday and Sunday. Only intermediate and advanced students are all welcome to register for Friday. We use PayPal for driving school registration fees. You will be accepted into the school after we receive your payment. Complete guidelines on registration including refund deadlines can be found on the Chapter website at boston-bmwcca.org.♦ Membership Corner: Membership knows no boundaries by Eric Kaul I n my opinion, it’s impossible to appreciate the greatest benefit of being a member of the BMW CCA until someone has selflessly put your problems ahead of their own to help you out. To give you an example of what I mean, I wanted to share some of my own BMW CCA stories. I also know that many of you have the same kind of stories to share. I’d really appreciate it if you would shoot me an email , text or give me a call to let me know about a member or members who have helped you out when you needed a helping hand, because I’d love to include it in an upcoming column! In April, after having attended a full day at the high performance driving school with the White Mountain Chapter at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, I headed home alongside other members who were traveling back to Boston. We started out the journey together, but I got separated for one reason or another and developed some engine problems along the way. As it turned out, I had blown the head gasket on my E36 M3, but I didn’t know it at the time. On the way home, I called Baer Connard, Boston Chapter secretary and owner of Ace Performance Tuning in Tewksbury to ask him to troubleshoot my car symptoms. He had left the shop about 20 minutes before, but took the time to diagnose the problem and offered to head back to meet me at the shop. I thought this was pretty amazing considering that he works non-stop at the shop and helps his wife Julie take care of their infant son Charlie! Since leaving the car at his shop, he has kept me in the loop on the status of the car via Facebook and regular emails. That day he even offered me a ride home, but special thanks go to Val Moutsopoulos for delaying time with his family to turn around that day and pick me up from Baer’s shop and deliver me to my house in Quincy. Baer and Val proved that BMW CCA friendships are amazing. I also owe a debt of thanks to Kevin van Valkenburgh. Kevin is a GVC Chapter member and owner of the Little Speed Shop in Rochester, NY. Kevin, and his team was doing trackside support at Watkins Glen early this month when I suffered a brake failure after 6 laps with my backup track car, an E39 540i. It also turns out that my brake fluid had boiled and my front left caliper seized. Of course, I didn’t have a spare one, but no problem, Kevin and his team immediately started calling area shops and located a replacement caliper only 70 miles away. Although I fully expected to lose the day of track time, the Little Speed Shop got me back on track for nearly two full sessions that day and ensured that I was on track for the next three days. I offered to pay them substantially more than they asked for, but they insisted in charging me only for their cost for parts and labor; and said that they appreciated keeping them busy on what began as a slow day in the hot sun! To ensure that I was going to be able to get back home, they showed up on Tuesday morning, and checked in with me before the day started to see how the car was holding up. I was blown away by Kevin’s follow through! Lastly, I wanted to highlight the selfless efforts of 4 individuals who were attending the Boston Chapter’s Watkins Glen event together: Michael Fenn, David Rissin, Farley Magalhaes and Brian Harrington. After completing the long drive from Boston to Watkins Glen, they stopped by a nearby WalMart where they saw a Sterling Grey BMW 540 with deep tinted windows parked in the middle of a nearly empty parking lot. They walked up to the car, which was running, and knocked on the window ... and then started banging on the window ... and then thankfully, woke me up. If it hadn’t been for them, I might not have woken up for hours. As it happened, I was running a fever and was battling food poisoning. I had driven down to WalMart to buy a thermometer, Tylenol, Gatorade and Immodium AD, but was so sick and tired I couldn’t muster the energy to leave the car ... and fell asleep with the motor running. When they woke me, I had been in the car for nearly two hours. This BMW CCA EMT team rushed into WalMart, bought the items I needed and accompanied me back to the motel where we were all staying. Multiple times that night and in the morning they came in to check on me. That night my fever rose higher which probably contributed to unusual dreams including one where I loaned my car to a friend because his 550Xi had a flat tire and he needed to take the wheel down to WalMart to have it repaired. Crazy? No, what’s crazy is that all three of the situations I’ve written about occurred during a span of two weeks this spring. BMW CCA members are special people. I know first hand, and am certain there are other amazing stories of friendship to be shared. Please, send me your BMW stories so they can be included in upcoming issues of the Boston Bimmer. ♦ About the Author: Eric Kaul has been the Membership Chairperson of the Boston Chapter of BMW CCA since 2010 and strives to be the friendly face you meet at events and your personal connection to other members. It won the third race at the Donnington Park racetrack in the northern part of England, and was driven by the 2009 BTCC Driver’s Championship winner Colin Turkington, who drove a 320is to victory that season. BMW had been struggling in traditional touring car racing over the last couple of years, and it was good to see the new body style 125i M win its first race. Rumor has it that we will get this body style (although maybe not the M version) in the next year or so. WSR is an independent team without BMW backing and is competing against a strong factory Honda team that is currently leading the championship, but there is a long way to go before the season is complete. On the BMW factory racing front, BMW continues to do well in the German DTM championship with a win at the Hockenheimring and is leading the teams and manufacturer’s championships. Although they are not leading the driver’s championship, it is really too early for this to settle out. Suffice to say, they are right in the middle of the fight. American Joey Hand who struggled last year with the transition to the ultra competitive DTM with its collection of hot shoes and ex-F1 drivers is improving. He qualified his M3 3rd at Brands Hatch and finished in 5 th which is a step in the right direction. The other main BMW factory effort is with the Z4. BMW is racing it in a wide variety of European and Asian series where the Z4 continues to be a competitive car and is winning its share of trophies. That topic brings us back to this side of the pond and the American Z4 effort in the ALMS, where Rahal Letterman Landigan Racing has had its ups and downs with the new ALMS Z4. They won a great race at Long Beach and managed a 3rd at the Montery race and are still sorting out the car. In the other half of the soon to be merged rival US sports car championships, Scott Pruett won the Grand Am Daytona Prototype race at Road Atlanta with the BMW powered Telmex entry. In the Grand Am GT series this year BMW has been struggling. In the top level Grand Am GT class our own Turner Motorsports finished 5th at Barber and 7th at Road 12 | Boston Bimmer • June / July 2013 Pictured above: the new BMW 125i M touring car built for the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) by West Surrey Racing (WSR) in the UK. Atlanta. The M3 is facing tough competition from Camaro, Corvette and Ferrari this year. BMW has done about the same in the GS class where Turner has been working hard to move up the order, but they haven’t had a lot of success in the last couple of races. In sports car series merger news, Grand-Am is sending one GT team to LeMans this year along with several teams from the ALMS series. It is a new world for cooperation and we will see what the future brings. Until next time, stay on track! ♦ About the author: John Oglesby has been a BMW CCA member since 1989 when he bought his E30 M3 He was president of the Boston Chapter for 5 years and now serves at the Communications Director. Tales from the home front: The Purple Haze L – by Ross Schold ast month I took a little road trip down US 95 to NY for business. While I was stuck in traffic approaching the George Washington Bridge a brand new M6 convertible crept past me. I wish that I could say that it was the stunning body lines or the aggressive stance that first caught my attention. Unfortunately, that is not the case. I was struck by the color ... actually I was dumbstruck. I’m sure that the driver, the dealer and the BMW website would insist that the color is actually San Marino Blue Metallic. But I’m not color blind and in the bright sunlight that car was Purple. I’ve seen M cars on occasion with the Techno Violet color scheme, and somehow they pulled it off. Those cars were deliberately purple, but this new M6 seemed to be purple by accident. Let’s be clear – the color of this car should not bother me – in fact it has no impact on my world what so ever. The driver plunked down the $115,000 to be the proud owner, therefore he can have whatever color he wants. I suppose he could even have it painted lime green with yellow spots and call it the “M Citrus.” A new automotive distraction The color observation did give me a new automotive distraction and I was keenly aware of paint schemes for the rest of the trip. I really started to notice the color surrounding every double kidney grill. What I found did not surprise me. Overall we Bimmer drivers stick with the fairly predictable choices. Our idea of variety may be displayed by nearly every conceivable hue of silver or gray. The one thing that did surprise me was the older 5 Series (E39) showed a bit more variety than most other models. I’ve provided some handy translations for the official paint colors of the examples I spotted: Oxfordgruen Blue Water Kalahari Beige = = = Nice Dark Green Kinda Silvery Blue Goldish The trends as I see them To be fair to our friend in the M6, my overall observation was that the 3 series and M drivers do tend to sport some bolder choices from the color wheel. This car may be an expression of the driver’s whimsical personality or a simple cry for attention. Either way, it worked. Given the chance, the driver might make the argument that my Titanium Silver vehicle signals a “buttoned up” style striving to blend in with the rest. So before I go too far down the road of personality analysis maybe I should just wish him well. So, to the Driver of the San Marino Blue Metallic M6 – Enjoy your new car! I wonder if it smells like grapes the first time you scratch it . Sorry … I couldn’t help myself. ♦ Editor’s note: Ross Schold has been a BMW CCA member since the spring of ‘08. We go to exciting, historic road racing courses. The Boston Chapter’s HPDS programs offers an opportunity to drive you car to its limits while ensuring your safety under the supervision of a trained instructor. In the process you will become a better driver and become more in touch with the handling and performance capabilities of your car. You will also learn why fast driving should be reserved for a controlled driving experience where there are no speeding tickets. In short, the program is educational and almost everything we teach on the track translates to the public roads. However, the HPDS programs offer much more than just the driving experience. I asked some of my colleagues why they still go to driving schools and maybe their words will paint a picture that might encourage you to come to a High Performance Driving School. An opportunity to educate others Larry Barbieri, Instructor/Registrar Photos on this page, from top to bottom: This photo at a Watkins Glen event illustrates a controlled, advancedgroup training drill. While there is no doubt that HPDS programs are designed to help students become better drivers, for many participants this is just the beginning. Where but at an HPDS event will you get instruction on maneuvering the track using the map on the back of your T-shirt, as seen in this photo from the 2012 Chapter event at Mt. Tremblant Canada. It is also a chance to meet and learn from other drivers who have some of the same interests as you do including making you the best driver possible. 14 | Boston Bimmer • June / July 2013 It seems like yesterday, but it’s been more than 10 years now since my first day at the track ... and I’m still learning things. High performance driving has become an integral part of my life. Many of my friends and neighbors know me as “the car guy” or the “race car driver.” (FYI – HPDS is not racing, but the whole “It’s not racing” discussion seems to go over many people’s heads. They figure if you’re in a car, on the track, going fast, then it is racing. Actually, that’s not true, but that’s another article.) Going to driving schools has given me many things, among them: better driv- ing skills, better awareness of my surroundings and a group of friends that is second to none. It’s the latter that makes it all worthwhile, and because of that I feel like I need to give something in return – to this activity that has given me so much. That’s why I became an instructor. That’s my way of giving back. I really enjoy sharing this experience with others and seeing them get as excited about it as I am. If everyone participated in advanced driving skill schools and high performance driving schools, just imagine how improved the driving competency would be of the people you share the road with every day. My goodness, we would eventually evolve into humans with only 4 fingers! I often wonder why everyone wouldn’t want to do this. But I suppose it’s no different than eating a strange food or jumping out of an airplane, it’s just not for everyone. If you’ve been considering a venture into the high performance driving school program, I assure you, you will be rewarded with an experience that will stay with you forever, and an opportunity to meet some great people. Helping people drive safely Dan Chadwick, Instructor According to an Allstate Insurance survey, 64% of American drivers rate themselves “very good” or “excellent.” Well, that’s not mathematically possible. We tend to think we are better than average, and a lot of us are plain wrong. Most people who come to their first driving school come away with not just a faceaching grin, but also a humble appreciation of how much better their driving could be. All it takes is a little instruction and some practice. An chance to make new friends Barry Tarr, Co-chief Instructor So why do I commit so much time to the Boston Chapter Driving Events? Well, I am writing this while I am at the track at Watkins Glen. And yes getting to drive on a race track is a lot of fun, but after 24 seasons there has to be more to it than that. At the moment my car is broken, but will be fixed soon. Since my car went out of commission I have had many people come up to me to ask how they can help. I have had people I barely know offer tools and advice. I have had many friends looking for parts that they may have brought with them, and when that didn’t work, a couple of friends from Connecticut start calling around to see if they could locate a crucial part. Other friends have offered me the use of vehicles to get parts and have ferried me back and forth to my hotel. Yes, driving is a major part of what we do. But the friends I have made not only from the Boston Chapter, Photos on his page, from top to bottom: There are many things you do in life where you may feel like just a face in the crowd, but not at HPDS events. Students are assigned an instructor for one-on-one training and novices have a mentor who will help them get ready for their first event. You also have the ability to provide feedback on your instruction so that the Chapter can improve the program and the teachers who guide you. Although it doesn’t always happen, it’s possible to find your “long lost twin” at HPDS events. Okay not your real twin, but another member who shares your passion for the same car and model, and sometimes even the color. It’s also a chance to make long-term friendships with people who share your interests and don’t mind that you have “helmet hair” hair at the end of the day. It’s also a great way to learn more about track and highway safety. www.boston-bmwcca.org | 15 Watkins Glen Car Corral June 28 – 30 Our friends in the Genesee Valley Chapter of the BMW CCA are hosting a car corral and hospitality tent for the 6 Hours Sahlen’s of The Glen. I am happy to give back to a group of people who have given so much to me. It is that simple. Fulfilling a personal dream John Oglesby, Past President For me the most compelling facet of HPDS events is the unique opportunity to balance your skills and the car’s capabilities, and to learn to maintain that balance at the edge of control. Growing up with a passion for road racing in a world dedicated to oval track and drag racing led me to search out an experience like I saw in Formula 1 sports car racing and particularly in Touring Car Racing. If you watch the drivers on TV or in person, you will see them balancing the car while drifting through corners almost effortlessly with pure passion and speed. It is something I love to watch and even more so — love to do, thanks to my HPDS experience. I have participated in many HPDS events progressing through each of the skill levels to build capabilities which allow me to drive in a way that let’s me achieve a feeling of satisfaction. I’m talking the kind of satisfaction that can only be felt when you are doing something you love at a very high level. The other joyful part of this is that the people around you understand the feeling and support you every step of the way. Plus, the other side of the experience is that I now drive much slower in real life, because it is impossible to sanely drive fast enough in the real world to achieve that same level of driving nirvana. ♦ European Delivery: How to make it as perfect as your dreams – Story by Alex Neihaus, – Photos by the Neihaus family M ost BMW CCA members have heard of BMW’s European Delivery (ED) program. This program allows you pick up a car in Munich, have it shipped home and get a discount on the purchase price. If that sounds too good to be true, let me assure you it is not. I have owned only two BMWs – a 2006 E90 330i and a 2012 F30 335i. Both were ordered here in Massachusetts, picked up in Munich and then re-delivered home about six weeks later. I’m proof this is an amazing program If this interests you, and repeat participants like me are proof that it is an amazing program, you can learn everything online from how to get BMW Welt from the airport to where to drive your new car to what to eat, what to bring and more. However, Pictured above: Cars purchased in the ED program are delivered to you on a turntable inside the spectacular BMW Welt at BMW’s HQ in Munich. Pictured here is Alex Neihaus and his daughter Rebecca, the day he took delivery in Germany. online forums are awash in incorrect information about what to do before you arrive in Munich. Questions about the ordering process, pricing and deadlines are usually met with wildly inaccurate information. Here I hope to share with you some of what I have learned about these questions. First let’s talk about the bottom line The European Delivery price is negotiable. Keep in mind that among the cars BMW sells both here and via ED that there are four price lists. Two are US MSRP and US “invoice.” (“Invoice” price is not what the dealer pays, but it is a commonly used proxy price list for where negotiations can begin.) There is another set of these two price lists: ED MSRP and ED “invoice.” You can easily find these online for the model you are considering; but remember that not all BMWs are available via ED. Cars built in Spartanville, SC are not available via ED. However, if you want to prolong the experience, you can have ED cars re-delivered in South Carolina. It adds weeks to the re-delivery time. One of the most common pricing questions people have is why dealers insist that the ED “discount” is already built into the ED MSRP price list. In other words, they want you to pay the ED MSRP for the car. Yes, www.boston-bmwcca.org | 17 to describe) the car ED MSRP is lower before you leave, than US MSRP. Matt Ligor offered his services for dent removal to BMW club members. Thirteen members took advantage of this opportunity to have dents ironed out of their vehicles. Matt is a master at his craft. My daughter’s 2004 X5 was parked in Boston and received a fairly deep (approximately ¾”) dent in the front fender – possibly from an adjacent car door opening. Matt worked on this dent for about ½ hour, very carefully tapping with a plastic pick and various irons to totally remove the dent. When he finished there was absolutely no evidence that there had ever been any damage to the fender, and the paint finish was perfect – just as it had been before the accident. I did not believe the dent could be removed by anyone but a body shop, with repainting, etc. to the tune of several hundred dollars. Matt’s efforts produced a perfect result with no repainting needed – truly a miraculous job – and for $65.00! I encourage members to participate in future Boston Chapter events sponsored utilizing Matt’s expertise. ♦ 5 Series Only Tech Session Import AuoWerks gives 5 series owners specialize tips – Story by Dave Differ, photos provided by Import AutoWerks S aturday April 27 th I joined in a five series undercarriage tech session held at Import AutoWerks in Braintree, Ma. However, personally, I really think he wanted some of those wings for lunch! Alvin was a Master Tech at BMW Gallery Norwood for 10 years before he decided to open his own shop. Today his shop offers great service and dedication to the brand, and in my opinion, Alvin is one of the most knowledgeable BMW technicians that I have ever met! It was a great group of members, and Alvin even managed an extra time slot for a White Mountain Chapter member with a 5 series who just recently moved to MA. He was looking for an independent BMW repair shop to work on his car and used the event as a way to learn more about Alvin’s service and facilities. After all the cars were inspected, a wonderful spread of sandwiches, wings, cookies & brownies were had by all. By the way, if you didn't get a brownie, it might have been a tiny “member” that caused the shortage — Eric Kaul's daughter had her eye's on them. I heard her ask for more, so you can tell she'll be an "M driver" when she grows up! To summarize this event was a great success. I came away with new friends, a new parts lists made out and appointments scheduled for my 5 series. For me, what I loved about this event was it gave me the opportunity to find new ways to keep my car in good shape, because it is a wonderful feeling to get a compliment on a 15 year old vehicle! Thank you to Alvin and his crew at Import Autowerks in Braintree and the Chapter for arranging a wonderful day. ♦ “I am a 5 guy, [so] it was a ‘Wicked Blast’ ...” 781.818.3830 46 Garden Park Braintree, MA 02184 Owner: Alvin Lui Email [email protected] Website: www.iautowerks.com www.boston-bmwcca.org | 23 ACE Performance tech session A Boston Chapter member reports on a lifesaving finds – Story by Andrew Plante, photos by Chris Troianello A n Undercarriage Tech Session is much more than opportunity to inspect your own car. It is an opportunity to get to know the underside of your car like the back of your hand. It is an opportunity to meet people, learn about their cars, and involve yourself in the culture we are all a part of. For me, though, it was more than all of this. It was a saving grace. First stop on a big weekend I had an entire weekend planned; the ACE Performance Undercarriage Tech Session on Saturday and my first Autocross event Sunday. Just that previous Friday, I had picked the car up from a different local shop, and I was glad to have the guys at ACE look over the work done. Well, about half way through the session I heard two words I had feared: “uh-oh.” The technician proceeded to call one of his associates over to say “look at what they did!” I couldn’t believe it. The shop had installed suspension components upside down! My weekend was taking a turn for the worst. An “uh-oh” with a happy ending After some discussion with the owner at ACE and the technician, and a bit of pleading on my part, they agreed to fix the other shop’s mistake after finishing the other tech sessions. Thanks to the guys at ACE, I had confidence in my car during the next day’s autocross 24 | Boston Bimmer • June / July 2013 On this page, top to bottom: An overview of the ACE Performance facilities which was filled with activity the day of the tech session. One member had heard a clunking coming from the rear of his car before coming to the session. Come to find out the rear sway bar snapped in half. Shown here is the owner with his “Trophy” from the day On the next page, from top to bottom: Each car took its turn on the rack. ACE technicians went over things they look for when doing an inspection and things we would keep an eye on when driving. All participants got a close up look at possible problems and how to detect them. How friends of the Chapter help a member in trouble: ... or, why I didn’t make it to the ACE tech session S event, and the sour start to the weekend ended at an all-time high. I wasn’t the only member to find surprises at this event. One member had heard a clunking coming from the rear of his car before coming to the session. Come to find out the rear swaybar snapped in half. “Optional equipment” was the term of the day, as each unique problem was identified. I am extremely thankful for the guys at ACE Performance, Baer and Vik. Needless to say, this was an afternoon well spent. An Undercarriage Tech Session is much more than an inspection of your own car. I met many people that day, all of whom I hope to see again, and I learned an immense amount in a short period of time. If you ever have a chance to attend one of these sessions it is highly worth your time. Who knows, it might even save your weekend. ♦ o I was all set to head to my undercarriage session up at Ace Performance in Tewksbury, MA this past Saturday. I had my appointment time, and was really excited to get the car checked out. I'm trying to learn a bit more about my car so I can start doing my own maintenance work. However, on Friday before the event, my car was towed; well almost towed. I was able to get to my car before they drove off; and they were nice enough to let my car down! I wondered why, until I noticed that both my rear wheels were bent! Over the next few hours I spoke with Eric Kaul, his 325xi expert friend Stephen Javaruski, and Baer Connard of Ace Performance about my situation. All were incredibly open, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable about BMWs! They were able to explain to me, from my description of the problem, that the tow company had bent both rear control arms. They all agreed that it probably was not a great idea to drive up to Tewksbury on bent wheels, so they set me up with a shop in Brighton (German Performance Systems) which was closer to me. I didn't get the chance to attend my tech session, but I met some great guys (over the phone at least!), and was helped out more than I could have ever expected! Thank you Eric, Stephen, and Baer for your help, and I'll see you at the next Tech Session! Oh, and on a side note, the tow company agreed to pay the repair bill; just received the check today! ♦ — Story by Merrick Nelson www.boston-bmwcca.org | 25 Boston Bimmer Classified ads TO PLACE A CLASSIFIED AD, LOG ON TO WWW.
