Kudos to the cast, writers, choreographers, director, and our own dynamic duo extraordinaire Lindsay Rosenman and Maya Minkin. Not only did they have to wrangle a cast of about sixty individuals, they also had to put up with at least one temporarily insane parent (me). Purim would not be complete without the Brotherhood’s Purim carnival. As usual, it was well attended, and lots of fun. Although this article is being submitted prior to the actual Purim service, I can safely say that I expect it to be great, with 30+ participants. Finally, I want to thank the Rabbi Search Committee. They have made remarkable progress. Please check out their blog, which now has a home on the CBE website. One last comment, check out the beautiful poster in the Community Court, and in the StarLite, for the upcoming Zamir Chorale concert on May 22. Tickets are on sale. This will likely be a sold out concert, so order your tickets now. If you missed the Brotherhood breakfast, with the Zamir representative’s presentation, I can assure you that this will be a once in a lifetime type of show. ✡ President‘sMessage BarbaraGreen [email protected] Wow! What a March we had! As many of you know, the month started off with an amazing Israeli weekend, by CBE’s Israel Committee spearheaded by Leann. For those that weren’t around the first weekend of March, CBE hosted a really cool Israeli teen (Shin Shin), who came to the Family Friday night service, to talk to and meet kids of our community. Of course that evening was capped off with an Israeli themed Oneg. On that Saturday evening, CBE families assisted in a very successful and fun progressive dinner, highlighted by wonderful local entertainment for the dessert portion, hosted at the Friedman’s home. And last, but certainly not least, Sunday brought an AIPAC breakfast (thank you Rachel Tadmore for spearheading this portion of the weekend), with our own Jeremy Bloomstone. It was with pride that I sat through that breakfast as Jeremy shared his experiences of growing up at CBE and how it has shaped his young adult life. In the community court, there were plenty of tables with all sorts of information related to Israel. Not to be outdone by the grownups, our own religious school mini chorus and mini klezmer band had wonderful performances. Then those same kids got to join their classmates to experience an Israeli shuk. On a more personal note, I have finally transformed into my mother! I learned to play Mah Jong at the well-attended Sisterhood Mah Jong class. I got to go home and say something I never thought I would say,“Guess what I heard at Mah Jong.” Finally, March would not be complete without recognition of the wonderful way our community celebrates Purim. It’s amazing how the same story CBE is planning a trip to Jewish Spain in April, 2017. If you would like more information about our trip, you are invited to an informational meeting on Thursday, May 12 at 7:00 at CBE. We will be meeting with our trip's guide, a representative of Keshet, Kayla Ship. Spread the word and join us! Please RSVP if you are interested to [email protected]. -3 - Congregation Beth Elohim THE STAR April 2016 FamilyShabbatService TotShabbatandROSHatCBE A Joyful Way to Celebrate Shabbat with your Family and Community Friday evening, April 15 at 6:00 All of our youngest children and their families are invited to sing, dance, pray, and learn with Cantor Sarra at our monthly Tot Shabbat. During “Torah Time”, we’ll hear a story and march with our own Torah scrolls. Children with a birthday during the month will receive a special birthday song. After services, we will all come together for Oneg Shabbat, a sweet snack and conversation in the Social Hall. This is a wonderful way to meet new friends in the community! Tot Shabbat and ROSH (“Ruach on Shabbat” services for elementary-school aged children and their families) take place on either the third or fourth Friday of each month. Look on CBE’s online calendar to find out all of the dates for services this year! If you’d like, bring your own (dairy) dinner and join us anytime after 5:15 as we eat together in the Social Hall before the service. All are welcome. Please contact Cantor Sarra at [email protected] with any questions or for more information. Celebrate Shabbat with music and prayer, blessings and stories on Friday evening, April 1 at 7:00! Geared especially toward children in grades one through six, yet designed to be welcoming for all adults and children, our Family Shabbat services feature many opportunities for participation, uplifting and lively new melodies mixed in with our familiar tunes, and instrumental accompaniment by CBE’s own talented musicians. Each month, children, and even families together, have the opportunity to lead a prayer, blessing or song in the service. This is a wonderful way for children (and parents) to learn and to feel the special sense of joy and pride that comes with leading a community in prayer. Please let Rabbi Mintz or Cantor Spierer know if you or your child would like to help lead. All are welcome! Halleluyah! A Service of Praise and Celebration The Congregation Beth Elohim Choir, along with Rabbi Mintz and Cantor Spierer, invites everyone to its annual music Shabbat on Friday, April 8, at 7:30 PM. Each year the choir prepares a service filled with beautiful and wide-ranging settings of the various parts of the Friday evening liturgy. This year’s service is inspired by Psalm 150, whose text tells us to praise God with our voices and with instruments. We will be singing four very different settings of Psalm 150— contemplative to rhythmic to rousing. And in keeping with the text, we’ll have a variety of instrumental accompaniments, including tof, clarinet, flute, cello, guitar, autoharp and piano. Many of the tunes in the service are among the choir’s favorites, and we hope they will be yours as well. We look forward to seeing everyone at this always popular annual choir event! Congregation Beth Elohim Application Preparation Seminar for parents of high school students. Sue will cover topics like the timeline of the application process, how to develop an appropriate college list, the value of college visits, application types and more. Sue is the founder and president of Acton College Consulting and has many years of experience in guiding students and parents through the complex world of college admissions as well as in serving as an admissions officer herself for several prestigious universities. Please contact Deb Colbert at [email protected] for more information. Later in April, Sisterhood’s resident running aficionado, Emily Blumberg, will again assemble a team of Sisters to run in a local road race, this time for the Groton Road Race on Sunday, April 24. There is an event for everyone in the family here, a Tot’s Trot for children aged 0-6 yrs, a 2K for beginners, a 5K and a 10K for more seasoned runners. The in advance registration fee is $8 for children up to age 6, $18 for ages 7-17, $26 for adults 18-64 and free for seniors age 65 and over. Participants who register prior to April 2nd, are guaranteed to receive a complimentary, high quality race T-shirt. (I hear they are made of a very nice, moisture wicking fabric.) For more information and to register, see the Groton Road Race website, http://grotonroadrace.com, and/or contact Emily Blumberg at [email protected]. The avid readers of the Sisterhood Book Group will meet on Sunday, April 24 at 7:30 PM at the home of Pam Laufer, 28 Marshall Path, Acton to discuss The Boston Girl, by Anita Diamant. Addie Baum is the Boston girl, born in 1900 to immigrant parents who were unprepared for and suspicious of America and its effect on their three daughters. Please contact Pam at [email protected] for more information. If you have a special talent or expertise that you would like to share with our community, or if you have an idea for future Sisterhood events, please let us know. We love appreciating and learning from our Sisters! ✡ SisterhoodNews JulieAgapite [email protected] This is the Sisterhood News, the ‘who’, ‘what’ and ‘where’ of all things Sisterhood. The Purim Shpiel is not officially a Sisterhood event but it is one of my all-time favorite events at CBE so I’m going to write about it anyways. What I love about the Shpiel is watching such a multi-generational group that normally wouldn’t have the opportunity to interact with each other, come together to create something so wildly entertaining and have so much fun doing so. It is community building at its best and isn’t that what Sisterhood is all about, too? This year, I couldn’t help noticing that there is, in fact, quite a bit of sisterhood involved in the Shpiel. Three sisters in particular give so much of their time, talent, heart and soul to the Shpiel and are instrumental in putting the show together. These are producers Maya Minkin and Lindsay Rosenman and lyricist and musical director, Karen Capland. (Of course, there are many men involved in giving life to the Shpiel but I’m not going to mention them because, after all, this is the Sisterhood News and I can’t go that far off topic.) In addition, there are many more current Sisters involved as actresses, dancers, choreographers, and behind the scenes as well, not to mention the teen and littlest future Sisters. Sisterhood congratulates all of you on a fantastic show and sends you all heartfelt gratitude for sharing your wonderful talents with the community. The talent, knowledge and skill represented among the Sisterhood membership are indeed impressive. We should borrow Apple’s slogan but instead of “There’s an app for that,” it should be “There’s a Sister for that.” Whatever you need done or would like to learn, there is a Sister with that expertise. Just recently, our Mah Jong maven, Julie McCall, along with Lauren Pollak, Sharon Smith, Jodi Larkin and Jodie Zwirn, held a Learn to Play Mah Jong Workshop that was so successful that a number of attendees have continued to meet regularly to practice their new skill. It won’t be long before they reach the rank of expert as well. Are any of you parents of high school students that are, like me, a bit overwhelmed by the thought of guiding your child through the complicated process of applying to college? Well, we have a Sister for that! On Wednesday, April 6 at 7:30 PM in the CBE swing space, Sisterhood’s own Sue Wachter, college consultant extraordinaire, will lead a College WERS,88.9FM,broadcasts YiddishandContemporary IsraeliMusic,Sunday mornings8:00–11:00AM. -5 - Congregation Beth Elohim THE STAR April 2016 Donations The congregation thanks our members, their relatives and friends, and the larger community for donations recently received… To the General Fund from: Ronni Kenger in honor of Doris & Fred Goldstein’s new grandson, Brody Camden Czajkowski, son of Carri Goldstein & Robert Czajkowski.
