THE HEISEY HERALD THE NATIONAL CAPITAL HEISEY COLLECTORS CLUB Volume XXXIII, No. 5 Washington, D.C. February, 2005 Page 2 The HEISEY HERALD FEBRUARY, 2005 Heisey’s No. 433 & 433-1/2 Greek Key Pattern By David Warren There were eleven pieces made for soda fountains and five pieces made for hotels. The pattern No. 433 had sixteen nappies; twelve plates; fourteen footed bowls or jellies; there were five pieces included in the punch set; ten sherbets; four orange bowls; nine pieces inclusive of jugs, tankards and water bottle; twenty-two stems; seventeen tumblers, sodas and barware; thirty-one pieces for the home. The pattern No. 433-1/2 had eighteen pieces, four which seem to be the same as No. 433. Twenty-two pieces were offered in straight and flared-sided versions. There are two scalloped nappies that are the only items that do not have the interlocking key design. See Vogel Book II, page 68. All items of the pattern were produced in crystal. The punch bowl, base, under plate and custard cup were also produced in Flamingo. The first patent was for the two quart crushed fruit jar by Andrew J. Sanford, patent No. 40,837 and dated August 23, 1910. The jar was marked with the diamond H and the patent date. The patent shows the Greek Key design for the lid and the jar both to be righthanded. The lid was actually made with the design left-handed and the jar right-handed. Grecian Border, as it was called by Heisey, was produced from 1911 to 1938. Collectors call this pattern Greek Key. This is one of Heisey's largest and most collectible patterns with over 170 pieces. This pattern is heavy and durable. It was intended for use in hotels, restaurants, bars, soda fountains and ice cream parlors, as well as the home. The diamond H is usually found on most items, and the bottoms are usually ground and polished. The Grecian Border pattern by Heisey was mostly done with the right-handed Greek Key design although a few pieces had the lefthanded design. The 1913 catalog No. 75 shows just about every item in the pattern. The 1928 catalog No. 109 shows four types of sherbets, the one and two quart crushed fruit jar, the footed banana split, the hotel ice tub and cover, and the punch bowl set. The 1937 catalog shows only the punch bowl, punch cups and the 21" buffet/under plate. The HEISEY HERALD FEBRUARY, 2005 FEBRUARY MEETING Page 3 Message from the Prez Monday, February 14 - 7:00 P.M. Potomac Community Library 10101 Glenolden Drive Potomac, MD I know many of you dealers are wondering what is up. I haven’t said one thing about bringing a Winged Scroll punch cup to the show. Thanks to Scott Heron for ending our 15 year search. If you come to this year’s show, please track me down so I can thank you in person. PROGRAM If you missed our January meeting, you missed a wonderful display and program on the Greek Key pattern by David Warren. See Vogel Book II, pages 67-82 for examples of the pattern. You will also be able to print off the program handout from our website. www.capitalheiseyclub.org Heisey’s Individual Cream & Sugars Please bring Examples Whatzits & Finds/Fakes The February meeting will be our last one before the show, so we will be ironing out the final details. I will be mailing out a letter and floor plan to our dealers in the next couple of weeks. I had to change the layout from last year to accommodate some request, but everyone has as many tables as they asked for, and the people in the center row will have a little more room. Sherry Warren is still looking for people to work at the show. If you would like to help us out please call Sherry at (703) 830-6764, or shoot me an email at [email protected], and put “Heisey” in the title or I will probably think it is spam and delete it. Sadly, George Corbin and Jay Martin have both decided to retire from doing our show, and we will miss them. Lucky, Bryan Baker found new dealer’s to take their spots. Chris Hartman has been doing a great job getting the word out, and we hope to see a big increase in our advertising for the show this year. With the new advertising, we hope to see an increase in attendance. The molds for this pattern were reported to have been destroyed during World War II. Chris Maskaleris informed us that the mold for the punch bowl had not been destroyed. While she was helping Continued on next page Welcome to the club Delores Benner of Allentown, PA, and Sue Maskaleris of Waldorf, MD. Delores, I can understand if you can’t make it to any of our meetings, but I do hope you make plans to come to the show, we would love to meet you. Sue is the niece of Chris Maskaleris and helps her out on occasion with the Herald. Sue, I hope you can come with Chris to one of our meetings so we can all welcome you to the club in person. See ya at the next meeting, John Martinez Page 4 The HEISEY HERALD FEBRUARY, 2005 Continued from page 3 to catalog the molds for the museum, the mold for the punch bowl was found with the rest of the molds bought back from Imperial. The Grecian Border or Greek Key design was used by Greek Artists as early as 1000 B.C. There is a winding river in AsiaMinor that was named after the Greek river God "Maiandros." From the word Maiandros came the Latin version "meander." The Greek Key motif and the meander motif are synonymous. 500 years before the Greeks, the Chinese had their own versions of the design. The Greek Key type design has been used by many cultures throughout history. Many glass companies also used variations of the pattern. Many thanks to Petros Z. Mantarakis who researched and put together the excellent book on this pattern, Grecian Border (Greek Key). The sale of this book benefits HCA, so please check it out at the museum, or you can purchase it with the order form in the Heisey News.
