2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT REPORTE ANUAL How Generations Y and Z Will Lead Us Into the Future Cómo las generaciones Y y Z nos guiarán hacia el futuro Letter from Rita Mancera and Kerry Lobel Puente has long been an agent of change on the South Coast. Since Puente’s inception 17 years ago, when the Reverend Wendy Taylor began the bridge-building practice of radical hospitality, Puente has been a catalyst for new and inclusive solutions in our own rural community and a model for creating such communities beyond our region. The report you’re holding is evidence of this change. Here, we profile a new generation of leaders who are stepping up to meet today’s challenges. Ranging in ages from 11 to 18, these young people demonstrate the qualities of compassion, care, and commitment that have long defined Puente’s work—all in service to others and to building an inclusive community. Like our community, Puente, too, is moving forward. With great joy we share the news that on January 1, 2016, Rita will succeed Kerry as Puente’s Executive Director. Rita, known for her hands-on and insightful leadership style and spirited personality, has been with Puente since 2006. She has served for many years as Program Director and most recently as Deputy Executive Director. A Pescadero resident, Rita is intimately familiar with every aspect of Puente—our budgets, programs, and funding sources. Photo/foto: Cat Cutillo childcare and health center, and improved office space worthy of the important role Puente plays in meeting community needs. Fostering new leaders from within the community is central to Puente’s work, and we are excited about this next generation of leadership. We know that with your continued support, together we can realize our ambitions and plans, which are bigger than ever. With our deepest gratitude. Generation Puente The face of giving is getting younger. Far from cynical or apathetic, this new generation of youth is aware, inspired, and generous with their time. Puente is pleased to salute this exceptional group of young volunteers who have helped transform the life of our South Coast community. Some are South Coast residents; others were led to volunteer at Puente through connections with their faith communities, school projects, or friends. 3 4 Ramiro Garcia, 16 Ramiro Garcia is the only 16-year-old in his group of friends who would rather not be out skateboarding or playing video games on Saturdays. Instead, he gives out food to his community. On Saturday mornings, Garcia joins his mother and older sister at a Pescadero church to distribute bags of food through the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Nothing separates Garcia from the Pescadero residents who line up for food. A few years ago, his parents, both farmworkers, were in that same line. “I like seeing people’s faces when they get their food. I feel like I’m doing something special for the community,” he says. Garcia started his volunteering as a high school freshman, providing childcare at Puente. He moved on to food distribution—and never stopped, even after he completed his school’s community service requirement. 5 6 Lydia Thompson, 12 Audrey Thompson, 14 Lydia and Audrey Thompson love shopping for school supplies – not just for themselves, but also for 30 kindergarten and first grade students in the La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District whose families need these supplies. For the past eight years, the sisters and their mother, Sarah, have purchased supplies for Puente’s backpack drive with funds donated by members of the Benicia Community Congregational Church. Church members stuff the backpacks, and the kids write loving notes with encouraging words for every student. Then they drive to Puente from Benicia to hand-deliver the bags and eat lunch with local youth. The girls love visiting Puente and meeting some of the children who receive the backpacks. “I know that they don’t have nearly as much stuff as we get for school, and that’s for the whole entire year,” says Lydia. “When you donate money to a charity you know you’re doing good,” Audrey adds. “But if you actually see it, you can see the difference even 30 backpacks can make.” “Pero si vas a ver, puedes notar la diferencia que hacen 30 mochilas." 7 8 Lupe Marcelo, 18 School was never an easy place for Lupe Marcelo. Two years ago her grades slipped so badly she was afraid she would never graduate from high school. Today, she is college-bound and excited about her future. Marcelo says everything changed when she began her high school community service hours with Puente. “At Puente, they’re always trying to support you and tell you why it’s important to graduate,” she says. Puente helped Marcelo boost her grades and focus her attention on college. She gave back through Puente’s Homework Club, helping younger students with the same schoolwork she had struggled with. “I got to see a lot of kids improve. It made me feel good, giving to the community.” she says. Me hizo sentir bien poder ayudar a mi comunidad." dice ella. 9 Puente Participants at a Glance / Una Mirada a los Participantes de Puente Puente provides programs for 30% of the residents of our rural region / Puente provee programas para el 30% de los residentes de nuestra region rural. Last year, Callagy spearheaded three school-wide donation drives to benefit communities in and around Pescadero. A member of the student government at St. Gregory’s School in San Mateo at the time, Callagy went from classroom to classroom, talking about Puente’s work and the needs of South Coast families. Donation bins were soon overflowing. First came sweatshirts for farm workers—more than 100. Then he organized a sports equipment drive, and students filled bins with hockey sticks, basketballs, baseballs, volleyballs, and skateboards. Callagy even chipped in his favorite baseball bat. At Christmas, Callagy asked for stocking stuffers. And the students outdid themselves, collecting hundreds of socks and toy cars for South Coast children. Callagy says kids his age respond when someone sets a good example. “Once people see others doing something good, then they feel they should be helping out too. Even if they’re only doing something small.” Incluso si sólo están haciendo una pequeña parte.” 13 14 Danna González, 18 As a girl, Danna González was painfully shy. But after four years of work with Puente, including nearly 100 community volunteer hours, she grew more self-confident and learned how to talk to strangers. Her first jobs at Puente, assisting with childcare during ESL and Zumba programs, led to her position as a counselor at YMCA Camp Jones Gulch. There, González taught preteen girls to overcome their own shyness. She remembers a counselor doing the same for her. “She made an impact on all of us girls, including me, and I wanted to make an impact like that,” she recalls. González graduated from Pescadero High School with so many volunteer hours that she received the class award for community service, and a banner in her honor now hangs in the school gymnasium. “I’m very proud,” she says. 15 16 Erik and Isak Reinemann, 11 (Pictured with their sister, Maya, 8 / En la foto con su hermana, Maya, de 8 años) Puente’s youngest budding philanthropists are twin 11-year-old boys from San Carlos who raised money from family, friends and neighbors when they learned that many children living just “over the hill” in Pescadero didn’t have money for books or toys. Erik and Isak Reinemann say that learning from a friend about the difficult lives of Mexican farm and nursery workers inspired them to collect dozens of school supplies, toys for gift bags, and books for Puente’s Dia de los Niños, or “Children’s Day.” The boys designed the fundraiser for a class project, and it was such a success they are now collecting coloring books with their sister for Puente’s Posada. “We wanted to do something that would help people have a better life,” says Isak. 17 Board of Directors and Staff / Consejo Directivo y Empleados BOARD OF DIRECTORS Consejo Directivo de 2014, 2015 Jorge Guzman Beto Razo MFT, Prevention Services Director*** Benefits Analyst** Karen Hackett Alejandra Resendiz Ortega Public Health Nurse** Youth Program Associate Julie Hosfeldt Jovany Rios Women, Infant and Children Program** Program Assistant Suzanne Hughes Corina Rodriguez MFT, Mental Health Counselor Community Resource Navigator Kate Haas Samantha Johnson Laura Rodriguez Mary McMillan, Secretary Social Worker** Community Resource Navigator Larry Trujillo, Vice-Chair Patrick Letellier Molly Wolfes Wendy Wardwell Development Director Community Health Coordinator Kerry Lobel Joann Watkins Executive Director MFT, Clinical Director Maricela Lopez Norma Zavala Childcare Provider Early Head Start Home Visit Specialist* Suzanne Abel Rita Mancera *Posted by the Institute for Human and Social Academic Director Deputy Executive Director Development **Posted at Puente by San Mateo Arlae Alston Abby Mohaupt County ***Former staff member Early Literacy Specialist Faith Community Liaison/ Volunteer Coordinator Diane Chapman, Treasurer Cristobal Cruz (2015) Gina Dalma (2014) Gabriel Echeverria Laura Franco, Chair Gabriel Gutierrez (2014) Carol Young-Holt STAFF / Empleados Monica Amezcua Community Resource Navigator Charana Binford Farmers Market Manager/ Adult Education Coordinator Program Assistant Omar Ortega Community Resource Navigator Iris Fernandez Veronica Ortega MFT Intern Office Manager Celia Gagnon Eleanor Palacios MFT/ATR Intern Dinorah Gudino Childcare Provider 18 Ivan Ortega Event Director Benjamin Ranz Community Outreach Coordinator YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND EMPLOYMENT PROJECT / PROYECTO DE LIDERAZGO Y EMPLEO JUVENIL Alan Amaya (2015) Uriel Amaya (2015) Bernardo Arellano Zuñiga (2015) Jose Luis Arenas (2015) Jose Luis Arellano (2015) Sofia Betteo (2015) Brenda Boyd-Goodrich (2014, 2015) Carina Cain (2014) Alejandra Castro Sanchez (2014, 2015) Elizabeth Chavarin (2014) Cristobal Cruz Antonio (2014, 2015) Araceli Cruz (2014) Paola Flores (2014, 2015) Karina Garcia Medrano (2014, 2015) Jesus Garcia (2014) Ramiro Garcia (2014, 2015) Ana Lisa Gomez (2014) Danna Gonzalez Calderon (2014, 2015) Kris Gonzalez (2014, 2015) Maria Isabel Gonzalez (2015) Ivan Guzman Rodriguez (2015) Nestor Hernandez Sanchez (2015) Yessenia Herrera (2014) Diana Lopez (2015) Susana Lopez (2014) Fernando Macias (2015) Omar Macias (2014, 2015) Maria Guadalupe Marcelo (2014) Brandon Marin (2015) Isela Marin (2014) Cristian Martinez Antonio (2014, 2015) Jacqueline Martinez (2014) Odalys Nabor Gudiel (2015) Osvaldo Nabor Gudiel (2015) Alberto Nabor (2014, 2015) Rafael Navarrete (2015) Jose Negrete Ramirez (2015) Itzel Negrete (2014 and 2015) Ashley Nuñez (2014) Daisy Perez (2014) Aldo Ponce (2014) Tanya Ramirez Guzman (2015) Andrea Rodriguez (2015) Ariana Salgado Zavala (2014, 2015) Eric Salvador Rios (2015) Yanelit Sanchez (2015) Jennifer Vargas Negrete (2015) Sonia Zavala (2014) SPECIAL THANKS / AGRADECIMIENTOS ESPECIALES Acelia Arenas, Zumba Instructor Gaby Flores, Zumba Instructor Lars Howlett, Photography Jacque Maxon, Finance Committee Becki Lemoge, Finance Committee Regina Neu, Development Consultant Michaela O’Connor, ESL Instructor David Pasternak, ESL Instructor Ana Polacek, ESL Instructor Flor Revolorio, Adult Education Julia Scott, Editor Georgina Snyders, Spanish Instructor Glen So, Design Bonnie Sterngold, Finance Committee Elizabeth Sumano, Zumba Instructor Kristin Teigen, Development Consultant Siobhan Togliatti, Zumba Instructor Erika Vera, Zumba Instructor Karen Walker, ESL Instructor Shannon White, Summer Instructor Financial Highlights | Reporte Financiero 3% 4% 38% 55% ASSETS / ACTIVOS 2015 2014 $972,975 99,289 160,973 37,781 1,271,018 $626,749 227,112 36,708 890,569 $80,258 In-Kind Donations / Donativos en Especie Property and equipment, at cost Furniture and equipment Leasehold improvements Accumulated depreciation and amortization Net property and equipment 19,239 160,552 (148,168) 31,623 19,239 153,864 (114,577) 58,526 $64,560 Total Assets $1,302,641 $949,095 TOTAL $2,231,164 Contributions / Contribuciones $1,227,436 Gonvernment Grants and Contracts / Contratos y Donativos Gubernamentales $858,910 Program Service Fees / Pago de Servicios Current Assets Cash and cash equivalents Investments Accounts and grants receivable Prepaid expenses and other current assets Total current assets LIABILITIES AND NET ASSETS / ACTIVOS Y PASIVOS 5% Current liabilities Accounts payable Accrued liabilities Total current liabilities $43,300 93,629 136,929 $38,386 73,427 111,813 $258,155 Long term liabilities Notes payable -
