Binoculars are identified by two numbers. The first is magnification power; the second is the
diameter of the objective (front) lens. For example, 8 x 42mm binoculars have a magnification
power of 8, and a front lens diameter of 42mm. More magnification isn’t always better, binoculars
with magnification powers greater than 10 amplify the movements of your hands, making steady
viewing more difficult.

Exit pupil is a measurement indicating how bright objects will appear when viewed in lowlight situations. A higher number means brighter images. Exit pupil size is calculated by dividing
objective lens diameter by the magnification. For example, for 8 x 42mm binoculars, the exit pupil
is 5.25mm. If you plan on using your binoculars in low-light situations, you should seek out models
with a high exit pupil number, ideally 4mm or more.

The prisms inside binoculars serve to make the viewed image right-side-up. There are two kinds
of prisms commonly used in binoculars: porro and roof. You can usually tell the type used – porro
prism binocular lenses have an offset design, while roof prism binocular lenses are inline. Most
optical prisms are made from borosilicate (BK-7) glass or barium crown (BAK-4) glass. BAK-4 is
higher quality and yields brighter, sharper images.
Why are optical coatings important?
All the optical components of binoculars (lenses and prisms) should be coated to minimise light
loss and reflection problems. A poorly coated binocular can lose up to 50% of the light initially
gathered through the objective lens, resulting in a poor quality image. By coating the optical
components with a fine film of chemicals, light loss can be greatly decreased. The highest quality
binoculars, described as “fully multi-coated”, have multiple coatings on all optical components, not
just on a few surfaces.
In addition to coatings, Carson offers an extra low dispersion ED lens option in the 3D Series,
further enhancing image clarity.
What is field-of-view, and why is it important?
Field of view is the size of the area that can be viewed through the binoculars. Linear field of
view is the width of area, in meters, visible at one thousand meters. Generally, the higher the
magnification, the smaller the field of view. A larger field of view is more comfortable for fast
moving action and wildlife viewing, but it’s likely to be slightly less crisp at the edges.
Why is longer eye relief important?
Longer eye relief increases your comfort by allowing you to hold the binoculars away from your
face; it’s very important if you wear glasses. Most manufacturers recommend that people who
wear glasses should roll down the rubber eyepiece collars before viewing. If you wear glasses, look
for eye relief of 11mm or more.

What is close focus?
Sometimes it's important to have a binocular that allows you to be as near as possible to
something and still get it into focus - birding and butterfly-watching are two examples. A close
focus rating indicates the minimum distance at which you can still focus on the subject you're
watching. Carson's JK series offers excellent close focus viewing in a high-quality, full-size binocular.
Which are the best binoculars for me?
Compact binoculars (common specs: 8 x 25mm, 10 x 25mm) provide excellent daytime viewing.
They're your best binocular option for weight-sensitive activities such as bushwalking
and mountaineering.
Mid-size binoculars (common specs: 7 x 35mm, 10 x 32) offer a happy medium of moderate
weight and strong light-gathering performance. They’re suitable for virtually any activity.
Full-size binoculars (common specs: 8 x 42, 10 x 50) are the best choice for wildlife viewing.
They provide a wider field of view and greater brightness than other models.
What type of binoculars are best for sporting events?
This age-old question really comes down to personal preference. Which is more important –
light weight (compact) or bright image clarity (full size)? Generally, magnification no larger than
8x with as a large field of view as possible is preferred.
What type of binoculars are best for bird watching?
8x42mm are the most popular optical configuration for this activity. They provide sufficient light
gathering capability and an 8x magnification allows the user to steady binoculars more easily than
with higher powers. Birders should avoid ruby or orange tinted lenses because they block much
of the light in the red colour spectrum.
What type of binoculars are best for wildlife viewing and hunting?
10x42mm binoculars are ideal for these activities because much animal activity occurs at dusk
and dawn, requiring high light-gathering capabilities and magnification at a distance.
What steps can I take to maintain my binoculars?
Make sure your lenses are clean at all times and keep them free of fingerprints, dirt and debris.
Use a Carson Lens Cleaning System or the Carson Stuff-It to clean your lenses quickly and safely.
When not in use, always replace the lens caps and store your Binoculars in a case.

COMPACT BINOCULARS
Small and light enough to fit in a pocket, Carson’s line of compact binoculars is ideal whenever space and weight are at a

Refractor vs Reflector
Carson offers two types of telescope design. Refractors use convex lenses to capture, focus
and magnify images, while reflectors use concave mirrors. Both yield good results, but each has
its advantages. Reflectors have a smaller footprint, can be used for terrestrial or astronomical
observation, and are generally thought to yield crisper images. This means they’re good candidates
for observing planetary and lunar details. On the other hand, refractors have superior
light-gathering capability and are preferred for deep space observation of galaxies and stars.
Aperture
This is the diameter of your telescope’s objective lens or main mirror. The bigger the aperture,
the more light that enters the telescope, and the more you can see. A doubling of aperture size
results in a quadrupling of light gathering capability, so it’s a very important characteristic.
Focal Length
This is the length of the light path from the objective lens or main mirror to the focus point.

F-ratio is determined by dividing focal length by aperture. The higher the f-ratio, the higher the
magnification a telescope can achieve, but with the trade-off of a narrower field of view. High
f-ratio telescopes (f/10 and higher) are favoured for planetary and lunar observation, while lower
f-ratio telescopes (f/6 and below) provide wider fields of view, and are suitable for deep space
observation. Telescopes with f-ratios in between are good for general purpose use.
