W
hen we were asked to supply the crew aboard
Pascal Bidegorry’s amazing 131ft trimaran
Banque Populaire with full technical clothing
for a transatlantic run, we had no idea that the clothing
would be used so little, but be so vital.
Just 3 days, 15 hours, 25 minutes and 48 seconds after
putting on their gear in New York, they took it off at the
Lizard. An utterly phenomenal crossing time and a mindboggling average speed of 32.94 knots. They also set a
new 24 hour run of 907.9 miles, an average of 37.8 knots,
and saw 47.15 knots on the speedo at one point. Imagine
the force of water flying down the deck at those speeds!
At those sorts of speeds, keeping the crew dry, warm
and effective is as important as having the right sails and
ropes that handle the loads. We are proud to say that
Musto HPX – just like you see in the shops – did the job
for Pascal and his record breaking team.
One reason why Musto off the shelf clothing is worn by
sailors like the Banque Populaire crew, most Vendée
Globe and Volvo Ocean Race sailors, many Olympic
hopefuls, and plenty more, is that it’s the best they can

Feedback from these sailors in the Atlantic, the Southern
Ocean and inshore waters is what goes into making
Musto clothing the best it can be - not just for the elite
sailors, but for you too. Ideas that come from Cape Horn
or from the waters off Weymouth, where the 2012 sailing

in every Musto stockist.
But it’s not just the top names who are allowed their

Engineered with the most rugged fabrics available, the
GORE-TEX® membrane is bonded to a hard wearing outer

Keith Musto – Flying Dutchman Silver medallist at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics - realised that the dinghy
sailing clothing available at that time wasn’t up to the job so he decided to do something about it.
Keith used his technical expertise, his attention to detail and an intuitive understanding of the needs of a
top racer to create the original Musto technical clothing; clothing that allowed sailing athletes to perform
at their best whilst remaining warm and dry.
Now, 45 years later, Musto and the British Sailing Team join forces once again. Musto are the Official
Performance Clothing Supplier to Skandia Team GBR , the British Sailing Team in the Olympic and
Paralympic classes in this exciting period up to the games.

The WINDSTOPPER™ membrane
is an ultra thin protective
layer which is laminated to a
lightweight textile layer, making
it totally windproof. It is made
of the versatile polymer PTFE
(polytetrafluorethylene) which is
expanded to create a microporous
structure. These micropores are
900 times larger than water
vapor molecules, allowing
perspiration to pass through
unhindered. This means that the
WINDSTOPPER™ membrane adds
total windproofness to any textile
without perceivably restricting its
initial breathability or weight.
The latest addition to the MUSTO/
GORE-TEX® family, the LPX
range takes a leap forward using
a 3-layer GORE-TEX® Paclite®
Shell a technologically advanced
breathable and lightweight
yet durable waterproof fabric
construction.
The MUSTO BR2 fabric is a 2-layer
microporous membrane fabric with
a polyester mesh lining. The fabric
