I wanted first to welcome our new members to
their first NCHOG newsletter. I just updated
the Email list and added several new members
who have purc hased a Harley - Davidson in the
past month. Hopefully we will see you at our
meeting and on some of our upcoming
rides.
Check
out
the
calendar
on
NCHOG.com and in this newsletter.
Just a reminder for current members, check
your national HOG membership and make
sure that you are current and remember t hat
your local dues must be paid by Feb 29th, or
you will be removed from our member
list. Local dues are $20.00 for a full member
and $10. 00 for an associate member. There is
a membership form at the end of this newsletter and online at nchog.com
Watch for our email announcements every
other week, which will help keep you informed
about NCHOG and North Cascades H-D activities.
To kick off the riding season, North Cascades
H-D will be holding a “Kick Off the Riding Season” event on, March 12th and the 13th. They
are offering a free safety inspection of your
ride. Check your tires and warm up the bike
and come in for your safety inspection. Also,
check out your gear as it may time to replace
that leaky rain gear. I am sure that we will
need it going forward.
Besides our First Saturday and Third Sunday
Rides, we have several overnight and weekend rides coming up this spring and summer.
Our first overnight ride will be the FBR, on May
27th - 30th, Memorial Day weekend. The ride
will leave on Friday morning from Monroe,
heading up over Stevens Pass and out to
Clarkston, WA. The 2nd day we will ride
through Idaho and Montana, continuing to
Thompson Falls, MT. Day three we will ride
through N. Idaho and Eastern WA. to
Omak. Continuing on Sunday, we will ride to
Mount Vernon via the North Cascades Highway. Tot al mileage is around 1300. We currently have about 20 bikes signed up. There
are still rooms available so if you want to ride,
contact me at [email protected].
The second overnight will be in early June.
This is Keith’s Picnic ride. This is the Olympic
Peninsula ride. There will be a sign-up sheet
at the March 6th meeting. Dat es are June 4th –
5th.
The third overnight ride will be a Central Oregon ride, August 3rd – 7th. This ride will be
down to Sisters, OR on Wednesday, the first
day. We will be staying at the Ponderosa Best
Western for 4 nights. We will be riding out of
Sisters each day with options that will include
Crat er Lake, the OR coast for lunch, and time
to rest, relax or exploring central OR High Desert as well as Sisters / Bend / Redmond area. On Sunday, we will be riding back to the
Skagit Valley. Currently we have over 25
bikes signed up. If you are interested, contact
me at tddostart @gmail.com.
Other rides in the planning stages are a ride to
the Pacific Northwest HOG Rally in Spokane,
Aug 25th–27th. Registration for the rally should
be open. Check it out at pacificnorthwesthogrally.com.
Just a note, you can register for the rides and
activities on the NCHOG website.
Finally, I saw an announcement in the past
couple of weeks that the Discovery Channel is
producing a miniseries called “Harley and the
Davidsons”. Based on the true story, the series will port ray the passion of two 19 year old
kids who built an empire from their backyards. This will take a look at Milwaukee in the
early 1900’s where William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson engineered the motorcycles and
the company. This may be of interest to a lot
of us. Watch for this later this year.
See you out
there on the
road.
Ride
safe, stay warm
and dry!

He Is Risen!
As Christians, we look forward to Easter as we celebrate God’s power in the resurrection of Jesus Christ
from the dead to the living. Belief in the resurrection forms out hope and the factual foundation upon which
Christianity is based. It completes our salvation knowing if Christ is resurrected that, as believers, we also
will be resurrected to be with Christ. Jesus was born for the cross. His whole life pointed towards it. His
resurrection provides a means for God and humans to be reconciled and distinguishes Jesus from all other
religious founders. I Corinthians15:3-6&14 says that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that
He was buried, that He was raised on the third day, and that He appeared to Peter, and then to the
twelve. After that He appeared to more than 500 of the brothers at the same time. If Christ has not been
raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.
We celebrate Easter on March 27th this year. If you have no home church, you are welcome to join Darlene
and me at our home church in Snohomish. http://www.snohomishfaith.com/faq/

Historian’s Thoughts
Lynne Rogers
In January’s newsletter I had a two part question, “When we got our Harley Dealership and when our Cascade
Harley Owner’s Group started”. The first part I reported to you, the second part was solved for me by means
of a copy of a patch. Our past officer and wonderful member, Catherine Dostart, brought me a picture of the
patch.
So as you can see our chapter was established in 1988. Wow! Twenty-eight year old owners group of fun people getting together because of motorcycles! Our common interest in Harley’s, riding, group activities, and
enjoying time spent together. This group has become a part of like-family to me.
So with that said I am going to go on with another discovery I found. Reading the earliest newsletter I found,
May 1996, I feel I have gained some insight of our eight year old owner’s group. These newsletters were only
two pages and no pictures. It did include a members list. I counted 44 members and I only knew two names.
They are a couple and are still with us and a very active part of our group. I think I am going to give them the
title of our First Family or Dad and Mom of our group. Drum roll please, they are, our own Buzz and Darlene
Harrington
This is so interesting to learn these facts about a group of people I enjoy spending time with and to be able to
share what I am discovering.
Next month I will reveal another discovery I made while reading the 97’ newsletter. Something I have also
been curious about and I hope you will all find it as interesting as I did. Stay tuned….
Till next month

We all look outside to decide if it’s a ‘riding day’ or not. Yep, having that sun shining and a chance to jump
on the bike without heavy gear is always welcome…but as those of us that live in the Northwest, it’s not
usually the case. Our damp, wet & rainy weather is pre1y prominent during most of the year. Having the
proper gear can s ll make the ride enjoyable and even great. Also, it’s pre1y important that we have experience in riding in different weather condi ons. Those that go on the FBR know that knowing how to handle your bike in rain, mist, fog and hail is cri cal to safety. So, what’s the ‘Safety’ in this …. Get on your rain
gear and get out and ride. Put some miles under your seat in ‘bad’ weather, but remember there’s really
no ‘bad day of riding’.(Except those icy, snowy days!) Even those mes that weather closes in and everyone
gets soaked.. it’s always good for some laughs later down the road. Oh, and have that rain gear. Try it out
to be sure it actually works in a pour down. You sure don’t want to be on a ride far from home to find out
that what they said was waterproof is not! Oh, and Road Captains…. When riding and it starts to downpour: Stop so that folks can get geared up (don’t just keep going like I did that me). See, Mark, I do remember things. Oh, oh, and don’t put your rain gear in the ‘chase car’ as it might not stop to give it back.
LOL.

Great BIG thank you to all who are sending in stories, pictures and jokes, keep them coming!
I often have spaces that I need to put something in. I can hit google and pinterest and find funnies that I like
but this is YOUR newsletter not mine and I would much rather share something YOU like! The
pictures and stories do not have to be NCHOG related they just need to be from You! I am looking for stories of favorite rides and fun experiences you have. Also looking for pictures, of your bike or of you on a
ride. Did you go on a ride and find a wonderful place to stop for lunch? Please share! A bad place? Please
Share! You can email them to me at [email protected], write them down and bring them to a meeting or
even text to them to me 425-359-0880

Minutes for February 2016 Meeting
Ken Lee
To hat or not to hat, that is the question.
There was some discussion at this month’s meeting about a member wearing an unusual hat. The
hat in question was atop the head of one of our more distinguished members, a polite way of saying
‘not a millennial’. When I first saw the hat I knew I had seen it before. I found an old photo of the
member in question with his golf partners taken many years ago. The member being on the far left.
We were told the hat was an Argentina Gaucho hat. Because you can look up anything on the internet I was able to find a photo of a couple of Argentinian Gauchos. OK, there is a resemblance, but the
men look much more dignified and refined than our member. The only other possible explanation is
he was wearing the top of a giant mushroom that may or may not have grown out of his head. I’m going with the golf hat theory. Now onto the minutes.
Our Chaplin Buzz opened the meeting by telling us that God’s grace saves us. He read 1 John 2:1-2
and said the good news is our redeemer lives and God’s grace gives us the power to change. Thank
you Buzz.
st
Our Director Tom asked who had eaten breakfast, looked like about half the members raised their
hands. Tom asked that we give a hand to the cooks and it was suggested that Mark Reeves do the
dishes. Mark licked his plate and called it good. Tom then asked all new members and guests to
stand and let us get a good look at you. Welcome Scott and Rhonda, who both have bikes that are
blue.
Mike from the Burn Camp was introduced and told us that back in 1995 JD offered to have NC HOG
come to the Burn Camp to give kids rides. Mike said he wasn’t sure at first about Harley people, we
do look a little intimidating to some but the kids loved us and we have been attending camp for 20
years now. Mike presented the chapter with a beautiful plaque for supporting the Burn Camp. He
said we are leaving a legacy for generations to come.
Tom then asked for some highlights of the Saturday ride the day before. Curtis, who road all the way
from Alaska (I saw the Alaska plate on his bike so that must be true) said a few hardy souls rode in
some wet weather to Chuckanut Drive, through HWY 9 and over to Conway. There they had lunch at
the Conway Tavern. Then to grandma’s house they went (OK if you don’t get itSjust think about the
first line of Red Riding Hood).

Minutes continued February Meeting
Tom and Vince let us know that this year’s Christmas party is tentatively scheduled for Dec 3 and
the Angel of the Winds. More information will follow as we get closer to December.
rd
Tom filled us in on some of the overnight rides coming up. The FBR will be over Memorial Day
weekend, starting the Thursday night before at the Guest House Inn in Monroe. We will be going to
the same places as last year, Clarkston, Thompson Falls and Omak but will try and take different
routes. Hotel information will be available by the next meeting. The Central Oregon Ride in August
has 27 bikes and 42 people signed up. All the motels in Sisters are full but there are some rooms in
towns nearby.
The Pacific NW Rally will be Aug 25-27. Check the web site for room availability as they are going
fast.
Keith let us know he will be leading the 1 Saturday Ride in June and it will be a picnic ride. It will
start in Port Townsend, head over to Neah Bay and then to Quinault for an overnight.
st
We were also told that the Abate Swap meet in Monroe will be on March 20 from 9 to 3.
th
Our Treasurer Vince told us how much money we had at the end of the year and some of what we
spent. One of the biggest expenses at the end of the year was for the winners of the Points. Mike
Downing got to go shopping with Vince at N C Harley. Not sure what he bought but he looked happy. Anytime you want to see the books just ask Vince.
Our Activities Director Bob let us know there will be a pool shoot on March 12 at the Bull Pen in
Sedro Woolley. Breakfast at 8 AM and start shooting pools afterwards. There is no license required to shoot pools and no limit. Wooden shot is required and all pools must be bagged in the
pockets. The next HOG Trough will be at Flyers at the airport on the 9 and on Feb 25th at the Camano Lodge. Remember, you get a point for showing up and eating.
th
BOB also filled us in on the new Points system. There is one point available for each HOG
event. Come to a meeting, get a point. Eat at the meeting, get a point. Kiss Mike Downing, get 10
points and a free trip to the ER if you’re a guy. If you’re a girl he’ll give you ten dollars. There will
be levels obtained for the number of points you collect throughout the year. The levels are 45, 65,
85 and 105 points. At 45 you get a patch, being designed as we speak and kept on Funk and Wagnall’s porch since noon today. The total number of points you can get is 130. There will also be a
prorating system for members who join later in the year. Has something to do with full moons and
tides but I’m sure it will work. We should let Keith figure it out.
Our Dealer Representative and LOH Director Biggie let us know there will be a blood drive at the
dealership on 2/13/16 and they need 25 donors. On March 12 & 13 there will be a free safety inspection offered at the dealership and on April 24 there will be a swap meet in the parking
lot. Space rental will be $10 for a 10X10 area. The rent money will go to a charity. It’s a good time
to bring all those parts you have laying around and sell them to someone who can then let them lay
around their garage until the next swap meet. Or make a lamp out of something, it’s up to you. She
reminded us that the dealership is putting a bike together for the Custom Kings contest that will be
revealed on Feb 27 .
th
th
Biggie let us know that there is a NC HOG chapter meeting for those new to HOG and group activi-

ties. Cameron from the dealership is leading those meetings that will hopefully attract members of
a slightly different demographic and get them involved with HOG. Those meetings will be on the 2
Thursday of the month. The location is North Sound Brewery 17406 State Route 536 - Mount Vernon, WA
98273 . Everyone is welcome. Tom added that it’s to attract younger members to HOG because
we are getting old. I know I said that a few sentences ago but my way was nicer.
nd
The LOH Summit will be in Mount Vernon this year at the convention center in the Best Western
Motel. There will be a meeting for the organizers of the event before the LOH meeting on Feb
16 . Biggie then gave away some Skagit Harley patches that were found at the dealership. If you
didn’t get one then you missed out of a valuable collector’s item sure to be worth many thousands
of dollars in the future. If you need one I do have one I could part with for a few hundred dollars. It’s an investment (OK, for my bank account).
th
Road Captain Dave let us know that the 3 Sunday ride on Feb 21 will be to Granite Falls. The 1
Saturday ride on March 5 will be the Darrington Loop with lunch at the Big Lake Grill. Dave asked
for the road captains to hand in all the ride sheets they are saving from last year. Bob Tisdel was
given a plaque for leading 9 rides last year and bringing 8 back. One is still wandering around out
there. If you see them tell them it’s OK to go home. Dave then had all road captains at the meeting get up and stand there in front of us. Ten were there, ranging from tall to short. A fund will be
taken up for Dizzel because he must have lost all his luggage on his last trip. He was down to a tie
die t-shirt, cargo shorts, black socks and yellow tennis shoes. Or I was having a flash back, I’m still
not sure.
rd
st
st
th
Our Editor Michelle requested that all entries for the newsletter be in by the second Saturday of the
month, which is why I’m doing this tonight, the Monday after the meeting. I might remember what
really happened doing it the day after the meeting.
Our Historian Lynn let us know she is cleaning out the archive box at the dealership. There are
lots of pictures but no names, dates or places on most of them. It was suggested that people look
at the photos and identify those you remember.
Safety Officer and Patch Lady Hope let us know the only place to get chapter patches is from her
as they are not available at the dealership. If you want a name rocker see Hope. There are a few
unclaimed name rockers available still. Sweet Cakes, Butter Ball, Stubby and Bite Me are available.
Where is NC HOG contest was won by Mike Downing. He properly identified NC HOG on a Cossack’s bike in Anacortes during the Oyster Run at 11:35 AM. He won a Tommy Tippy Cup. Hope
pointed out the NC HOG has been around since 2005 and his name rocker is ‘Here’. There was a
patch on NC’s vest having something to do with a body part. I am too embarrassed to write what it
says so you’ll just have to look. I remember taking NC on a trip to Canada one year, then returning
him to the dealership and putting him on one of the display bikes for Hope to find. Best time I ever
had with a pink pig.
Hope talked about riding in wet weather. How important it is to know that your rain gear works before a long trip by using it for short trips locally. We should make it a point to ride in wet weather so
when we get stuck in rain on trips our skill levels will be good. Also, if you have a chase car on
trips that carry some of your stuff, don’t pack your rain gear in the trunk. On one trip people pulled
North Cascade Chapte r 3587 H.O.G. Press / on line at www.ncHOG.com

over to gear up but the chase vehicle kept going. Guess who got wet. Hope also pointed out the
Road Captains tend to ride a lot and sometimes are already geared up. When it starts to get wet
they should pull over to make sure everyone has a chance to gear up. We sometime tend to think
that it will stop raining soon and we’ll dry off. Hope also let us know that there will be some group
riding training scheduled in the near future for those interested.
Membership Officer Linda let us know we have 350 members. She thanked all those who have renewed so far and reminded us that you will be dropped at the end of the month if you have not renewed. That means no more newsletters and no more meeting minutes. She also thanked everyone for bringing in egg cartons and plastic bags for the food bank. It was noted that some personal
items were left in the donations. Only one item was claimed. The other, well does your mother
know about that?
It was then time to give away stuff. The white ticket prize went to Chet, a box of chocolates and to
Jerry who won a gift card from the dealership. Not sure who got the better prize but Chet was happy
he had Valentine’s Day covered with a gift for Lori. Mike Downing won the 50/50 and gave the money to Mike for the Burn Camp. Howard Bono found his member number in last month’s newsletter
and won a hat.
Buzz asked that we keep Fred & Laurie, Rusty and his wife and Pam Reeves in our prayers. Buzz
also said he will be doing bike blessings in March and April. Buzz then closed the meeting with
quote from Ronald Reagan about freedom to live, to choose and to care about each other and a
prayer.
We will see you all next month in beautiful down town Sedro Woolley.
