I wanted first to welcome our new members to their first NCHOG newsletter. I just updated the Email list and although our membership has gone through the annual decrease, we have already added several new members who have purchased new HarleyDavidsons in the past month. Hopefully we will see you at our meeting, on some of our upcoming rides and other events. Check out the calendar on NCHOG.com. I recently read a blog that was discussing the new market initiative that the Motor Company has started. Harley-Davidson is stepping up with a new marketing plan aimed at increasing brand appeal to young adults. From the article, “Marketing strategies which appeal to the millennial generation have gained traction, becoming a trend in many of the world’s top companies, making it unsurprising that HarleyDavidson plans on campaigning towards a younger market.” “Many Harley-Davidson dealers are quickly picking up the campaign, posting youthful images in their advertising”. With the addition of new models, many millennials are now looking at Harley-Davidson as an alternative to the available sport bikes. As the “Motor Company” changes its focus on the motorcycle customers, the HOG chapters are also being asked to welcome these new members. As we announced back in January, we have a group of members who are working to find activities and events that would be of interest to these new members and could be scheduled to match their work and family schedules. Within NCHOG, this group is being organized by Cameron and Shannon (Biggie) Olson. I had the oppor- tunity to attend the meeting this week and discuss their plans for activities. Most of these members would like to be able to participate in the activities that we have planned, but because of their schedules, they are not available. As they plan activities and rides, they will be scheduling at different times and at different location. Their plans are not exclusive to this group, but are open to all NCHOG members. Within a few days of our announcement of this group, I started hearing some of our members comment and grumble about a new group, within our chapter. Having this new focus within NCHOG is a very positive and necessary move. I hope that other members will take the time to attend the meetings scheduled by Cameron and Shannon. I believe that you will be impressed by the group and want to continue to participate with them and in the activities and rides that they schedule. I am sure that we will all find that these activities and rides are a refreshing addition to NCHOG. We all need to remember why we are HOG members, “to ride and have fun”. There will be more to come on this subject as we discuss how we can welcome all of the new members into the NCHOG family. Briefly, we have several overnight rides scheduled. Our first overnight ride will be the FBR, on May 27th - 30th, Memorial Day weekend. We will be leaving from Monroe on that Friday morning. The second overnight will be in early June. This is the Olympic Peninsula ride and is being planned by Keith. There will be a sign-up sheet at the April 3th meeting. Dates are June 4th – 5th. North Cascade Chapte r 3587 H.O.G. Press / on line at www.ncHOG.com page 3 Director’s Corner continued The third overnight ride will be a Central Oregon ride, August 3rd – 7th, Wednesday – Sunday. Other rides in the planning stages are a ride to the Pacific Northwest HOG Rally in Spokane, Aug 25th– 27th. Registration for the rally should be open. Check it out at pacificnorthwesthogrally.com. Also, I believe there will be a “Camping Ride” later in the summer. If you are interested in any of these rides, contact me at [email protected]. Finally, if you have a favorite ride, either a day ride or overnight and would like company, please let us know. I am sure that we will find other riders that would love to go. The dealership is also requesting these rides for the Ride Planner which will be located at the dealership. We just need you to document your favorite ride and give it to me at our meetings or to Shannon (Biggie) at the dealership. These rides will be available for anyone and especially for visitors to our riding territories. See you out there on the road. Ride safe, stay warm and dry! Tom Historian’s Thoughts Lynne Rogers In the May 1996 issue of the newsletter, the discovery I made was answered. The answer was when the LOH part of our group started. It appears the LOH part of our group didn’t evolve until late ‘97 or ‘98. The invite came in April of 1997, located in the Chapter Officers list. LOH Officer— C’mon! (Whatcom’s director is a woman), is how it is written up. So ladies we were invited to start the group and be more active in the group or maybe back then they thought we would have that group and leave them alone! No that couldn’t be, that was in the late 90’s not the 50’s. As I read further the officers then were looking to fill what is referred to as Optional Positions. Those positions were as follows — Activities Officer; LOH Officer; Road Captain; Editor; Safety Officer’ Photographer; and Historian. Yes the main officers are very important and we have had some great people filling those positions. We also have had and do have some great people filling Optional Positions and with those people and all our members we are a great group of people whom I enjoy spending time with and riding with. Until next month, Get on your bikes, and Ride! North Cascade Chapte r 3587 H.O.G. Press / on line at www.ncHOG.com page 4 Chaplain’s Corner By Buzz Harrington When in Doubt! Thomas, one of the twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came to them after his death. When they told Thomas, he said, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it. (That Jesus had come to them).” A week later, Thomas was with the others at the house and though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your fingers here, see my hands, reach out, put your hand into my side, stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said. “My Lord, my God.” Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book, but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name. We don’t know why Thomas was absent the first time Jesus appeared to the disciples after the resurrection, but he was reluctant to believe their witness to Christ’s resurrection, not even friends could change his mind. Doubt can be used to pose the question, get an answer, and push for a decision, but doubt was never meant to be a permanent condition. Thomas didn’t stay in doubt but allowed Jesus to bring him to belief. If you doubt, find another believer with whom you can share your doubts. Silent doubts rarely find answers. Notes from my Bible—John 20:24-31 For prayer or needs, contact Buzz at: [email protected] or 360-568-9889 Head Road Captain Dave Ballard Looks like the weather, the calendar, and the cover of this newsletter are all in agreementK Spring is finally here! Which is great encouragement for yours truly to finish my yard projects so I have some time to get out and ride. Please remember while your out riding this season either on group rides or solo, take some time to stop along the way and enjoy some of the fun places you are passing through, then take some pictures to forward to your favorite editor, perhaps with a description or short story to be shared in the newsletter to encourage others to get out and enjoy our state. Remember Saturday, April 9th we will be having a road captain’s meeting at 9:00 am in the meeting room at Denny’s on College Way in Mount Vernon. This meeting is for the road captains to plan rides for the rest of the year, and is open to all members. If you are thinking about becoming a road captain, or just have 2 cents you want to add, please join us. Ride Safe, Dave North Cascade Chapte r 3587 H.O.G. The 2016 LOH Summit will be hosted by North Cascades and we are confirmed for September 30 - October 2nd at the Best Western / Convention Center. Stay updated with information at facebook.com/LOHSummit/ If you are interested in helping with this event please let Biggie know . Questions and interest can be emailed to [email protected]. NCHOG ~ LOH will be putting together a basket to donate to the LOH Summit again this year and our theme for our basket is “Local & Liquid”. If you have anything “Local & Liquid” that you would like to donate toward our basket please bring it to any of our LOH meetings or you can drop off your donations to Biggie at the dealership. April 24th NCHOG ~ LOH will have a table at NCHD’s Swap Meet. If you have items you want to get rid of and would like to donate to LOH (or for a small fee we will sell your stuff for you) please bring your items to any of meetings or you can drop off your donations to Biggie at the dealership. Next LOH meeting April 19th at Bob's Burgers & Brew in Burlington. Dinner at 5:30 meeting starts at 6:30. Safety with Hope Hope Star Ah, the Tulips are poking their heads out and it’s a bit ‘nicer’ out. Farms are gearing up, draining all the rainlakes out of their fields and moving equipment all over the place. Oh, they go from one fieldK dragging m uddy equipment, to just down the road a piece to another muddy field. We’re all excited that it’s closer to spring and the weather and daylight is getting better. Time to hit those back roads for a ride! The hills and mountains still have the chance of ice, so we stick to the ‘flats’ where it’s ‘safer’. Here’s what to watch forKthat’ black gold’ soil that farmers love so is slippery as shit on the road. It also comes in ‘globs’ which sometimes dries (if the sun actually comes out) and sticks to the road like a rock. Most of our bikes don’t ‘do rocks’ like dirt bikes do. Now those farmers, they’re busy folks and have their hands and minds full of ‘what I gotta get done before the next downpour’K. Unfortunately it is not really checking twice for bikes. They also are often on a lower level and if you’re not as tall as a 250 Crew Cab, well, they just can’t see you. Of course they have to get a ‘good run’ at that narrow pull out so that they don’t get stuck in all the mud (which they will then drop on the road), so they don’t ‘stop and look’..and lastly: Those big rigs pulling equipment can’t make the turn on ‘their side of the road’! SoK be extra cautious on those nice farm road rides! Watch for mud on the road, rocky ‘mud’ on the road, farmers pulling out & farmers taking extra, whole road turns. Now those tractors that just tool along at 5 mphK they’re nothing to worry about, unless you have all the above right as you go to pass them. North Cascade Chapte r 3587 H.O.G. I often have spaces that I need to put something in. I can hit google and Pinterest and find funnies that I like but this is YOUR newsletter not mine and I would much rather share something YOU like! The pictures and stories do not have to be NCHOG related they just need to be from You! I am looking for stories of favorite rides and fun experiences you have. Also looking for pictures, of your bike or of you on a ride. Did you go on a ride and find a wonderful place to stop for lunch? Please share! A bad place? Please Share! Press / on line at www.ncHOG.com page 10 Minutes for March 2016 Meeting Ken Lee March 6 Minutes th As many of you know I try to start each set of minutes with something interesting or funny. Usually the topic comes easy as there are so many interesting members that say and do things that beg for me to write about it or send it in to TMZ. This month nobody said or did anything that helped with a topic and I thought I’d get skunked this time but I was saved. At the end of the meeting I spoke with a long time member who has been absent lately. He did tell me he would be released soon and hoped to start riding again. I guess those GPS monitoring systems don’t go very far. I won’t mention any names but it rhymes with Don Carter. Glad to see you back and feeling better. Can’t wait to try and keep up with you on some rides. Now onto the minutes. Our Chaplain Buzz opened the meeting with John 1:9 & 1:4; The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. He came from the father full of grace and truth. Buzz reminded us that whosoever will believe in the power of his word can receive the hope we need. Buzz thanked the Chapter for the thoughts on the loss of his son. That we never know our circumstances so be prepared. Thank you Buzz. Our Director Tom then brought up members of the Sedro Woolley Fire Department for a presentation to the Burn Camp. Keith from SWFD thanked the chapter for the help we give with the Burn Dance and presented Michael with a check for $12,260. Mike told us the SWFD first helped with the Burn Camp in 1990 and that over $200,000.00 dollars have been raised. He said that several of the kids who got rides from Chapter members are now Harley riders themselves. It was then time for new members and guests to stand and be recognized. Lynn’s daughter Barbara was our only guest this meeting. Remember you get a point for bringing a new member to the meeting and introducing them. Picking up the panhandler on the corner, bringing them in and introducing them will not work. Keith gave a recap of the Saturday ride the day before. His said they did the Darrington Loop and thought that Darrington was someplace in the middle of the ride. They had lunch at the Big Lake Bar & Grill and all had a good time. Depending on your starting point Darrington could be the midpoint or it could be the beginning or end. I wasn’t there so I’ll take Keith’s word for it. Head Road Captain Dave let us know that three bikes showed up for the last Sunday ride which was short and wet. He then gave us some dates for rides: March 20 is a ride to the Monroe Swap Meet. Leaves the dealership at 9 AM. There will be a ride on April 2 but the details have yet to be announced. I’ll assume it will be on motorcycles. The R/C meeting will be on April 9 at 9 AM at an unknown location. Dave will let the R/C’s know. I have been to the unknown location several times. Sorry, can’t tell you any more about it because it's unknown. th nd th Tom and our Assistant Director Len then handed out officer patches, pins and small sculptures to the current NC Hog officers. If you want one of these coveted items you will have to become an officer. They are items you can hand down to future generations and they will know you were somebody, at least for a year. LOH Officer Biggie gave Katie Marrs a gift for being the past LOH officer. She reminded the ladies that the next LOH meeting will be on March 15 at Bob’s. Men can come to meeting but have to sit in the corner and behave. She let us know there would be an LOH table at the swap meet next month at th North Cascade Chapte r 3587 H.O.G. Press / on line at www.ncHOG.com page 11 Minutes Continued March Meeting the dealership and for all of us to vote for the Custom Kings contest bike online. I voted last week and there were a lot of very cool bikes. I hope NC Harley’s bike makes it into the next round. Biggie then introduced NC Harley’s service manager John. John let us know that the service department will now be offering menu based pricing on various services at the shop. He said you pick the items you want done and that we would save money by doing this. He asked that we check out the services which are listed at the dealership. He reminded us that the dealership will be offering free safety inspections on March 13 and 14 . th th Biggie let us know that the dealership will be having an Easter party on March 26 from 11 to 3 and that there would be bike blessings on March 13 & 14 . She reminded us that being part of the dealerships rewards program has benefits. There will be a Casino Night on April 9 and that there will be a Christmas in July toy run on July 10 . th th th th th Food will be available at Sig’s Roadhouse, located at the dealership, on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday’s starting on March 10 . They have hired a chef who is making some good food, not just hotdogs and hamburgers. Not sure if lobster is on the menu but I will be checking. th Biggie advised that about a hundred people have signed up for the million mile event this year. It’s not too late to sign up. If you have signed up let the dealership know your mileage when you stop in so they can keep track where we are. Our Treasurer Vince was not at the meeting. But he sent in the figures and they looked good. He reported we have money. If you want to see the books just ask Vince. Safety Officer Hope asked how many people had been riding so far this year. Several of us raised our hands (good thing I rode the day before so I could be part of the group). She said a lot of us ride the flats this time of year because it's familiar and flat, and makes for a good place to get used to riding again. She did point out that the flats are dangerous. Farmers track mud onto the roadways, tractors are on the road going slow and making wide turns. Be careful when passing. You never want to be that guy who rear ends a tractor pulling a large disc plow. It has happened and makes a big mess. Hope reminded us that it's almost tulip season which means every idiot driver from Seattle will be up here looking at the flowers. Stopping in the middle of the road like a Yellowstone tourist looking at a bear just to see a flower or an Eagle. I still can’t find any Nuke the Tulip stickers any more. She is working on setting up an experienced riders course in the very near future. Hope asked that if you are new to group riding to say something the Road Captains before a ride. They will help you with knowing the hand signals and what to do in the group. A R/C may ride with you to get you going and feeling at ease in group settings. There will be group riding classes at the dealership in the future. Hope let us know she does have an assortment of NCHOG patches for sale but that you have to be a member of NCHOG to buy the patches. Jan has North Coast HOG patches. OK, he has one patch that he made himself as he is the only member of that group. It's amazing what he can do with a couple of magic markers and a piece of a pillow case. I would have sewn it on my vest but staples do work. North Cascade Chapte r 3587 H.O.G. Press / on line at www.ncHOG.com page 12 Minutes continued March Meeting Our Photographer Maggie let us know she got a new camera. I was disappointed as I liked the big box camera on the tripod she used to have. I really like the flash powder flash attachment and the black sheet she got under to take the picture. I think this camera will be faster. Our Editor Michelle asked that we fill out the information sheet in the newsletter that tells a little about us. She also asked for reviews of Sig’s Roadhouse. Please eat there first before writing the review. This isn’t Yelp. She also asked that items for the newsletter be in by the second Saturday of the month. Our Historian Lynn let us know she has been going through the photo books at the dealership. She would like some help identifying who the people are and where the photos were taken. I was wondering where the book of post office wanted posters of our members went to. I heard a rumor that Darcy may have ‘borrowed’ it because he liked looking at old pictures of himself. Our Activities officer Bob was not at the meeting. Tom did his best to imitate Bob and let us know there will be a Hog Tough on March 24 at the Cedar Stump in Smokey Point (sounds like something from the Appellation hill country. Bring your own banjo), and on April 5 at Big lake Bar & Grill. Next time Tom imitates Bob he should wear a green dress, Bob never wears orange. Reminds him to much of his favorite show, Orange is the New Black. Really Bob? th th The Shootout will be on April 10 at the Skagit Shooting Range in Burlington. No high powered weapons, shotguns or machine guns please. The Chapter will pay for the range fees. You can rent guns at the range and buy ammo. JD reminded us that the range wasn’t a shooting “gallery” but a shooting range. So leave your syringes at home. th Hope then let us know where NC Hog was in the photo. It was on Hope’s old bike at the Conway Tavern. Judy Ducken was this month's winner and got a new Tommy Tippy Cup. No mold in that lid! Hope also said she takes all the answers home and reads them to herself. She said she sometimes laughs but also cries at some of the answers. We will be taking up a collection for Hope sometime in the future so we can buy her a Beta Max so she can watch old movies instead. What did you think of Paul’s answer Hope? Mark Reeves and Buzz then gave us some more information on the Easter ride on March 27 . There will be an Easter service at Stanwood Middle School from 9 to 10 am. The ride will start after the service and will stop at the Old Edison Inn for food. There will be a Chaplain's Ride to Winthrop July 22 to the 24 . The ride will go from Marysville to Winthrop and there is a pool at the hotel and a BBQ. Buzz also let us know there would be bike blessings after the April and May meetings. th nd th Rick Crosley spoke about Toys for Tots and thanked Keith for his help with the Toy Run. He presented Keith with a Raggedy Andy award for helping. Normally I’d say getting a grown man a doll as a gift would be unusual but I did see Keith talking with his gift after the meeting. Don’t know what was more odd, Keith talking to a doll or that the doll actually talked back. Maybe we both need help. Keith did ask for volunteers to help with the Toy for Tots Poker Run on July 10 . They are needed at the stops and he needs at least 8 people. th Keith gave some information on his picnic ride starting on June 5 . The ride will start in Port Townth North Cascade Chapte r 3587 H.O.G. Press / on line at www.ncHOG.com page 13 Minutes continued March Meeting send and go up to Neah Bay and to Lake Quinault for the night and head home the next day. Tom gave certificates, suitable for framing, to Mike and Jack for working the HOG table in February. He reminded us of the swap meet at the Dealership on April 24 and that you won’t have to take back what doesn’t sell. All metal items will be taken for scrap. He suggested you go to the Monroe swap meet to get an idea what junk you can get rid of at our swap meet or even buy some of that stuff and sell it. I believe with all the stock parts that will be at the sale you could build a complete bike. th Ayse found her HOG number in last month's newsletter and won another Tommy Tippy cup. I looked all over for the hidden number but could not find it. I am going to start my own hidden number game. If you find it, 45672, you can buy me coffee. Membership Officer Linda let us know we had 172 members as of the meeting time and that there were 64 members at the meeting. She didn’t ask but I hope a lot of you had breakfast at the meeting. It’s the best value around, pretty much as much as you can eat and the food is great. I don’t need to eat again after one of the breakfasts. I do anyway and now I need a bigger belt.
