JULY 2015 - Tamalpa Runners
FREE JULY 2015 FREE Page 2 A Lump in My Throat By Kathy Johnson According to the dictionary, that saying basically means one is choked up with emotion. I’ve felt just that from the nice things people have said about the Tamalpa Gazette I’ve produced for the last 8 months. I have also physically felt a lump in my throat – well, actually, it’s situated on the front of my neck. Turns out my thyroid has decided to supersize itself and go a bit wonky, so I’ve had a few tests, pokes and prods and need to take some time off for surgery. I’m not sure when I’ll be back to the Gazette but it will carry on as evidenced by this great issue published by Ed Corral and team! (with assistance from Karen Corral) Whether I have my lumpy throat or not, I will continue to feel all choked up from the support the running community has given me through this journey. The day I felt most frightened, I went for a run with friends and felt 100% better afterwards. I discovered that runners will be there for you, through thick and thin. When you PR and feel like a million bucks, and when you’re vulnerable and afraid. I’ve been all those things these past few months and have realized that my running friends are actually the best friends a gal could ask for. The Board would like to welcome new members ~ April, May & June: Sylvia Arellano, Lulu Barron, Maria DeJournette, Julie Garrett, Lesly Higgins, Salim Islam, Trevor Islam, Jason Koch, Alexandra Larova, Jason Lemberg, Thomas Rosencrantz, Gary Semling, Grant Shapiro, Ali Thomas, and Sam Thomas. Page 3 President’s Post By Ed Corral Tamalpa Proud! I cannot say enough how proud I am to be the President of Tamalpa Runners. Saturday & Sunday (6/13 & 6/14) was the 105th Dipsea Race weekend. To see how many Tamalpa members participated in the race weekend as volunteers and/or race entrants was incredible, truly wonderful. The Dipsea Race and Tamalpa Runners share so much history together (albeit relatively recent history since the Dipsea Race has been around since 1905 and Tamalpa Runners will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary next year). Many of the Race's champions have been Tamalpans, the Team Trophy has been won many times by Tamalpans, and it’s always great to see Tamalpa members win the Family Trophy. And, I am loving the competition and new runners the Pelicans have recently brought on to win the Team Trophy – great competition, great runners. The Dipsea Race and Tamalpa Runners are definitely two different entities that share a kinship. Tamalpa Runners had 217 current members racing and many (formally and informally) members volunteering; some even doing both. So cool! As the Tamalpa Runners President, and member of the Dipsea Race Committee, I have a unique perspective in seeing how successful the Dipsea Race organization is in putting on the race, and knowing that the Tamalpa Runners membership contributes to its success year after year. Tamalpa Proud! [Here’s a list of the Official Dipsea Volunteers that are current Tamalpans: Stephen Allison, Kirby Bartlett, Darryl Beardall, Bruce Benter, Moriah Buckley, John Catts, Nancy Clary, Jerry & Kathy Colletto, Ed & Karen Corral, Shirley Dahl, Bridie Dillon, John Edgcomb, Duane Franks, Susan Garnett, Tamara Gonzalez, Melissa Havel, Kelly Hunt-Miceli, Joanne Kambur, Bill Katz, Kelly Lawson, Ana Levaggi, Bruce Linscott, Horst & Heidi Meyer, Tom & Lillie O'Reilly, Billie Post, Kurt Ryan, Jon Schroeder, Anitra Seitamo, Elmo Shropshire, Howard Solomon, Steve & Karen Stenberg, Craig Stern, Edda Stickle, Ben Travers, Linn Tyhurst, Walter Underhill, Andy Valla, Paula Glodowski-Valla, Pam Wendell, and Ray Wilkes.] If you would like to officially sign up as a Dipsea Race Volunteer for next year, go to http://dipseavolunteers.org/public/sign-up/ and sign-up!] Page 4 DIPSEA! The 105th Running Photo by Pam Wendell and Elmo Shropshire Tamalpa Sends Winner to Victory Alley for 18th Consecutive Year By Tim Amyx Dipsea photos by Jim Harleen,, Pam Wendelll, and Elmo Shropshire The uniqueness of the Dipsea race covers a variety of perspectives. One of those is the historic angle and appreciation for the handicap system. For every person who has moaned and groaned about the handicap set up, there is another who has benefited and views it as it is; a special race, with a special & unique way of gauging success. Success in the form of “how’d you do?”. How you answer the question can be answered in two ways, and each person judges for themselves as to their success, or lack of. The answer you give could very well be both GOOD and bad….. or, BAD and good…. One can run the race in 50 minutes, and not finish in the top 10…. One can run the race in 72 minutes, and win the race… which would you prefer? The 200 plus Tamalpans who ran the 2015 Dipsea can each tell you how they did. Tamalpa’s’ Brian Pilcher continued the streak of Tamalpans winning the Dipsea that goes back to 1998. Sal Vasquez was the last non-Tamalpan to win the Dipsea, in 1997. Since then, 18 years have passed with the winner always wearing a Tamalpa singlet. Some have even won the race more than once. (Russ Kiernan, Melody Anne-Schultz, Shirley Matson, Dianna Fitzpatrick, Jamie Rivers and now Brian Pilcher.) Brian Pilcher is 58 years old, and by most standards is a world-class runner in his age group. He makes his home in Marin, runs Mount Tam frequently. It’s no surprise he has won the race twice, and may win it again. Other 50 something Tamalpan men have also been in this age group who have won the race, or placed this high, particularly pointing out former winners, Roy Rivers, (continued on next page) Page 5 Tamalpa Sends Winner to Victory Alley for 18th Consecutive Year (continued) and Russ Kiernan. Alex Varner and Mark McManus are a few years from turning 50, but they too could one day dominate the 50 something crowd, and finish in 1st. The Dipsea Race Team Trophy was won by The Pelican Inn Runners, who have now won three out of the last four team trophies. Their team: Matias Saari (2nd place), Rickey Gates (3rd), Alan Reynolds (7th), Gus Gibbs (8th) and, Alex Varner (9th). The “SLOWEST” of this group was Alan Reynolds who ran a scratch time of 55 minutes!. The Pelicans are fast. Tamalpa’s leading lady, Diana Fitzpatrick entered the race without thinking realistically of winning for the 3rd year in a row. The “winner’s penalty” minutes (2) were just too much to overcome, plus it’s tough to run as incredible as she did in 2014. Nevertheless, she did run a fantastic 65 minutes and still easily won a black shirt and finished in 11th pace. Only one woman finished higher than Diana, and that was Chris Lundy, who ran the fastest time of the day for the women (59:22). It’s very likely if Chris stays healthy and keeps running the Dipsea, that one day she too will finish in 1st. Only four women finished this year in the top 35, including Sissel Bernten-Heber (23rd), which earned them the prestigious “black shirt.” It was one of the lowest numbers in recent years. Not far back were other Tamalpa women, some who have seen the black, and others who are still hopeful that one day they will finish in the top 35. Some other women who are Tamalpans or friends of Tamalpans in the top 100 were: Patricia Shore (43rd), Jennifer Foster (45th), Sarah Tabbutt (48th), Katie Fast (56th), Elizabeth Shortino (66th), Ashley th Sternfels (70 ), Helene Drumm (75th), Sara Gigliotti (77th), Jill Baker (90th), Laurie Smith (93rd), Karen Simontacchi-Brisson (97th), Angela Strange (98th), and Gretchen Andrus (99th). Lisa Trustin was just outside the top 100 and finished in 101st place. To mention just a FEW of the day’s special stories: Former Tamalpa president Brad O’Brien won another black shirt. He was, for many years, on the cusp and often missed. He now has 3 black shirts…. At 75 years old, former winner and friend to many-a-Tamalpan, Hans Schmid continues to amaze. He held the lead up to Cardiac, and still held off everyone else in the field, except for 16 runners. His 17th place finish is one of the all time great finishes for a Dipsea runner of his age… Brad Bryon has for years been a mainstay of the Dipsea and of Tamalpa’s TCRS races. He won his 20th black shirt this year. That is phenomenal when you think how many people have not even RUN 20 Dipsea races… At 58 years of age, Brad still has a number of good years left to collect more black shirts… Congratulations to all Tamalpans who ran or participated as volunteers in the 105th running of the Dipsea Race. See you all in 2016. (NOTE: Check out the Dipsea web site (www.dipsea.org). There is a link to a 9-minute video highlight of this year’s race. Just about every Tamalpan who ran the race can been seen in the video.) Are runners shrinking? Everyone trying to be like Hans (Schmid)? -- after 38 years we seem to be getting this MMDR thing down. Once again everything went very smoothly, we had good numbers, up a bit from last year, lots of kids in the track races, and, except for some small, annoyed runners wearing tent-sized shirts, lots of smiling faces. On the racing front it’s good to know that nice folks do occasionally finish first, and that’s exactly what happened this year. As always there were lots of great performances, but the two racing highlights had to be Phil Reid’s amazing 5th 10K win, in 30:07, and Jan Frisby’s pending American 70-74 10K record of 40:14! The best part of this for me is that they are both great guys and neither is coached by Alberto Salazar. And I had the pleasure of presenting Jan, who hails from Colorado, a bonus award of $250 for breaking one of our crazy-fast 10K age-group records. It says something about the quality of runners who have raced our 10K over the years that it practically takes an American record to break one of our age-group records. The 10K winner on the female side was Alycia Cridebring in a fast 34:28. (Alycia subsequently ran a 4:19 1500m at the prestigious Portland Track Festival on June 13th.) In the 5K, Kyle Ravera was first male, in 16:19, and Elizabeth Hadley lead the women with a 20:55 time. Notable Tamalpan performances included: Beth Freedman, 3rd 45-49 10K in 39:55; Kathy Johnson, 1st 50-59 5K in 21:03; Melody-Anne Schultz, 1st 7079 5K in 27:29; Alan Reynolds, 2nd 50-54 10K in 35:46; (continued next page) Page 13 2015 MMDR: The Race Directors Review (continued) Brian Pilcher, 1st 55-59 10K in 34:14; Jim Myers, 2nd 65-69 10K in 46:20; Len Goldman, 2nd 70-74 10K in 42:16; Hans Schmid, 1st 75-79 10K in 44:46; Phil Phythian, 1st 80+ 10K in 78:33; Mike Holland, 1st 60-69 5K in 20:16; and Bernie Hollander, 2nd 70-79 5K in 33:54. Maybe the most enthusiastic runners this year were a group of a dozen or so girls from Roosevelt Middle School, a ‘high-needs’ school in Oakland. Their girls-only running club, Girls Run Roosevelt (http://www.gofundme.com/ quy26c), was founded this year with the aim of teaching girls to find their strength through running. They were all very excited to make the trip across the Bay to their first real race. Although initially most of the girls planned to run the 5K all eventually ended up doing the 10K. As their coach said, “None of the girls were satisfied with the 5K once they knew some of their friends were running the 10K.” With that type of thinking we’ll probably next see their team at our Headlands 50K. The Don Ritchie 5K is a fundraiser for pancreatic cancer research at the UCSF Pancreas Center. This year donations to the Center from Tamalpa and individual runners, volunteers, and friends of Don totalled over $3600, which means that we have helped raise nearly $32,000 for the UCSF Center since we started the Don Ritchie 5k six years ago. The MMDR was featured on the back cover of Spring/Summer 2015 edition of the Pancreas Center News, along with a picture of Don’s granddaughter, Violet, running the 5K in 2013. Our volunteers are simply the best. I hear this from runners every year and it is the reason that many have told me that the MMDR is their favorite race. We have over 50 monitors out on the course, many like Tim and Diana Fitzpatrick, Brad and Karen Bryon, Russ and Marilyn Kiernan, Tim Amyx and Florencia Gascon-Amyx, Rob Flatland, Dave Covey, and Dick Cordone, to name just a few, are out there every year. Problems with frustrated drivers are probably inevitable, but having such experienced people at the same locations year after year greatly mitigates any difficulties. (continued next page) Page 14 2015 MMDR: The Race Directors Review (continued) Lillie O’Reilly could write The Book on race day registration. Probably wouldn’t make a bestseller list, but would definitely be authoritative because no race has a more efficient registration area than the MMDR. Volunteers like Mark Miller, Jay Wigger, Hazel Wood, Jo Anne Kamber, Judi Shaffer, Susan Garnett, Ray Wilkes, Heidi and Horst Meyer, Anne Hardham, Bridie Dillon, and others generously donate their time year after year to help make this happen. Special thanks, as always, goes to our volunteer captains: Lillie, Ken Grebenstein, Ana Levaggi, Kathy Herzog, Ed and Karen Corral, Earl Downing, Frank Ruona, and Joaquin Fritz. In addition to her cleanup duties Karen also took on the roll of check-in coordinator this year. Ken stepped up to assume the critical role of course captain and somehow achieved the impossible -- he and his course monitors managed to get all the runners through the construction zone detour on Magnolia Ave. without my hearing a single complaint from a runner. And we all know how whiny runners can be... Unbelievable! For this remarkable achievement Ken receives the coveted MVV award for this year (Most Valuable Volunteer). For the record, Pam Wendell was MVV runner up this year for all the hours she spent on her race photos, meticulously selecting only the most fetching shots of all of us (or the least disturbing in some cases…). If you haven’t already done so, please check out Pam’s photos, which are free for download on the MMDR website at www.marinraces.com or on Facebook. Special thanks also to Kees Tuinzing, Dave Pinto, Jim Morris, Jason Jacobson, Mary and Mark Churchill, Kevin Runon, Mark Stevens, Pam Wendell, Janet Bowman, Bill Katz, Shirley Dahl, Liz Shortino, and Art Marthinsen, for the long hours they put in this year and every year. And thank you very much to the many volunteers that I have neglected to mention for donating their time and talents to make MMDR a safe, well organized, and fun event again this year. Our volunteers are what make our event special. Page 15 By Tim and Diana Fitzpatrick Tamalpan Dave Mackey, a former course record holder of the Tamalpa Headlands 50K and current course record holder of both the Quad Dipsea and the Miwok 100K, was involved in a serious trail running accident on May 23rd. Dave was running one of his usual weekend runs up Bear Peak near Boulder, Colorado when his foot slipped on a rock. To stop his fall, he grabbed onto the rock which broke loose and tumbled down the slope with him. The rock, which was estimated to weigh three hundred pounds, ended up on his lower leg where he was pinned until hikers heard him calling for help. There was an extensive rescue operation to get him safely down the mountain that lasted over four hours and involved over two dozen paramedics and others. Dave spent three weeks in the hospital and has undergone seven surgeries so far with more to come. He is now back at his home in Boulder with his wife, Ellen, and their two kids Ava (7) and Connor (5). Dave feels mostly grateful to be home and to have gotten the support and love of his family and so many friends throughout this ordeal. To help him and his family with the many medical and other expenses they will incur that won’t be covered by insurance, Dave’s friends have set up an online donation at You Care/Dave Mackey. Any support is greatly appreciated. Dave is a physicians assistant but it will be awhile before he will be able to return to work. Dave is an amazing person and ambassador to our sport and a great friend to so many Tamalpans. http://www.youcaring.com/dave-mackey-372113 Page 16 Volunteers Needed This year’s Tamalpa Headlands 50K is the USATF Trail 50K Championship race.
