December 2009 14 Kislev ~ 14 Tevet 5770 The Scribe Temple B'nai Israel From the desk of Rabbi Mann: The catchy phrase “December Dilemma” refers to that odd feeling a minority experiences when it is left out of, or out of sync with, the majority population which celebrates Christmas. This widespread observance and celebration - in religious forms and in merely cultural ways - gives the Jew pause in terms of its identity in the wider community. Do we live in a Christian country? The Jewish talk-show hosts Dennis Prager and Michael Medved think yes? Do you? What, if any, should our response be to the ubiquity of Christmas celebrations in public schools? What has been your experiences when you grew up with respect to the “December Dilemma”? How do children feel today? Have times changed? For the better or the worse? Has American law settled (or advanced in) the issue of the separation of Church and State? The “real story” of the Festival of Lights, I believe, is somewhat different than the story we grew up with. On the Friday nights of Dec. 11, 18, and 25 we will explore the “December Dilemma” in light of (pardon the pun) the ‘real’ story of Hanukkah, as interpreted by Hanukkah and the ‘December Dilemma’ At A Glance... Hadassah Book Club Dec 2 three contemporary rabbis and professors, Rabbi Irving Greenberg, Rabbi Ron Wolfson and Prof. Shaye J. D. Cohen. THE ADDAMS FAMILY play Dec 6 Hanukkah: First Candle Dec 11 In order to prepare (if you would like – or just come and be surprised!) you may Google The December Dilemma and find Shaye Cohen’s article in the Forward.com entitled “Hasmoneans, Hellenism and Us”. Also listed is an article by Ron Wolfson entitled (not surprisingly) the December Dilemma from MyJewishLearning.com. (Hopefully, some returning college students will join us in the discussions. They are being contacted.) Join us for a panel discussion after services during the Oneg Shabbat. By the way, the FIRST Hanukkah candle is lit on Fri. Dec. 11 before the Shabbat candles. One last comment. How often do Hanukkah and Christmas coincide? This year, the eighth Hanukkah candle is lit on Friday, Dec 18 – a full week BEFORE Christmas. Does this mean there is less of a “December Dilemma”? Rabbi Mann Deadlines: • Scrip orders are due Sunday, December 13 • Romanian Kosher orders are due Sunday, December 13 HANUKKAH AT THE TANNER HOUSE, Aurora The Aurora Historical Society invited the Temple to decorate the dining room of the Tanner House for Hanukkah. The rooms look as if you were going to Bubbe’s house for the 6th night of Hanukkah. Tanner House, built in 1857, is located at Cedar and Oak in Aurora, on the west side, and is open for holiday viewing starting Sunday, December 6 through December 30 on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 1— 4 pm. Should we put up a Christmas tree, aka “Chanukah bush”? Should we have Santa come down the chimney? How do we handle it when we have family and friends who celebrate Christmas? There is a simple solution to this; just don’t have the dilemma. Christmas is a beautiful holiday. It’s really not possible to ignore it. I recommend that you create your own traditions. This can include putting up Chanukah decorations, making latkes together or, as they do in Israel, donuts and, yes, kindling the Chanukah candles and singing Chanukah songs. I’ve heard there are those that go so far as to constructing a chanukiah in their front yard made of PVC pipe. Re- member, this is not a matter of competition but rather providing opportunities for you and your family to express yourselves as Jews. At this point the issue of the December Dilemma becomes a nonissue, because you will have created Jewish holiday memories that will carry you and your family throughout your lives. ___________________________ Plan your December calendar with TBI in mind. • • Sunday Dec. 6th—School Hanukah Party (and for those who have purchased tickets for the Theater Party—The Addams Family is at 2:00) Sunday, Dec. 13th—The Jews of Shanghai. TBI Adult Ed presents our own Else Bruch talking about her experiences in Shanghai from 1938-1940. We will also view the HBO film on the subject. And plan on Lox and Bagels first. (Previously scheduled for Dec. 20th) From the Mail Dear Temple Community, Thank you for making my Bar Mitzvah a special day. I appreciate everyone’s support and help. Thank you also for the generous gift. Sincerely, Danny Aharoni GIFT SHOP OPEN... Please come to see our GIFT SHOP and SHOP SHOP SHOP!!! And don’t forget the Latke sale! ___________________________ TBI is beginning a new fundraising effort starting in 2010—we are selling ad space in the Scribe. As you know, the Scribe can be found on-line on our website each month. So, each advertiser not only reaches the scribe mailing list, the ad also reaches countless others who open the Scribe on-line because they are interested in our temple. Ads range in size from a business card to a full page, from one month to a full year. If you are interested in advertising, or you can think of someone who is, please let us know. A few Housekeeping details: our Rebbetzin Beryl is in charge of the kitchen. If you plan to be doing anything in the kitchen—please let her know so she can coordinate all activities. Also, the Gift Shop is available on Sundays (Dec. 6th and Dec. 13th) for your shopping. Please make an appointment for other days. As the end of the calendar year draws near, I know many of you decide on your donations so that they can be listed on your 2009 taxes. TBI needs to be at the top of your list. Who will support our synagogue if we don’t? Who will make sure there is a Jewish future for our kids and grandkids if we don’t? Please make that gift right now to Fair Share—you will feel so much better that you did. See you soon, Judy Page 3 HADASSAH BOOK CLUB CHANGED: Join us at the home of Anita Cohen on Wednesday, December 2, 2009—7:00 pm to discuss Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. Page 4 The Scribe What’s Happening in Religious School We're getting ready for our Hanukkah party Dec. 6, and many thanks to Anna Kurtzman for organizing the event, including the activities and latke baking. We hope to see all our families and students attend, and we know a lot of hard work is going into making it a great day! We'd like to alert you to a change in the Religious School calendar. There WILL be school Sunday, Dec. 13, and winter break will begin the following week, which means there will be NO Religious School Sunday, Dec. 20. We think this will make your school break plans easier. Our Birthday Book Club has been going well, and we thank all of the parents, grandparents and others who have already made a contribution. Patricia Rosenmann has been filling our library with the new books, along with organizing the library so that soon our students can check out books. The Wednesday Religious School program for grades 3-8 has been offering students in-depth Hebrew instruction thanks to the help of a number of volunteers. Students are grouped by ability, and we're very pleased with the results! Special thanks to Jacob Danmar, Shira Ramer, Daniel Rosenmann and Gary Raymond for volunteering their time to work with the students. "The Addams Family," a new large-scale tuner based on the cartoons of Charles Addams, aims to be the hit of the season. We can enjoy this show and raise a little money for the Temple at the same time. Two-time Tony Award® winners Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth star in this magnificently macabre new show created by Jersey Boys authors Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice. The Addams Family Musical is a completely new twist on the age-old saga; to their horror, Morticia and Gomez are forced to be parents to daughter Wednesday when she hits that certain age and decides that being nice is the way to be. Word is, The Addams Family musical is set to be so amazingly popular that, though the run on Broadway doesn’t begin until spring 2010, all tickets will be gone by then. But, we can see it here in Chicago—before it ever gets to Broadway. We have reserved a small block of 1st Balcony tickets for Sunday, 12/6 at 2:00pm, cost $100/person. Your check made payable to Temple B’nai Israel must accompany your reservation. OFFICE USE: Number of Items: ______ Total Bill: $ ___________ Paid Date: ____________ Check # ____________ Chanukah Laws & Customs First Night of Chanukah Sunday, December 11th It is permissible to perform regular work during Chanukah. The Chanukah menorah is an eight-branched candelabrum, with an additional place for the “service” light. It is designed either for candles or oil. The lights are kindled with the “service” candle or light (called the shamash). The shamash candle is then placed in its designated spot on the menorah. The menorah is lit as soon after nightfall as possible. On the first night of Chanukah, only one light is lit. Facing the menorah, it is the one at the far right. On the second night, two lights are kindled and so on through the eighth night, when the entire menorah is kindled. ALTHOUGH THE ADDITIONAL LIGHTS EACH NIGHT ARE ADDED TOWARD THE LEFT, THE LIGHTING ITSELF TAKES PLACE FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. In other words, one lights the new candle (e.g. 2nd candle from the right, on the 2nd night). After the lighting of the menorah, additional prayers and songs found in the Siddur (prayer book) are sung by the entire family. The lighted menorah should preferably be placed near a window so that it may be seen from without, thus publicly proclaiming to the miracle of Chanukah. THE BLESSING CANNOT BE RECITED OVER AN ELECTRIC MENORAH. On Friday evening during the week of Chanukah, the menorah is lit BEFORE the Shabbat candles, even though it is not yet nightfall. On Saturday evening, the menorah is lit at home AFTER the recitation of the HAVDALAH. Blessings Over the Chanukah Lights Recited each night as the candles are lit. 1) Ba-ruch Ah-tah Ah-do-nay Eh-lo-hay-nu Meh-lech Ha-o-lam Ah-sher Keed’sha-nu B’meetz-vo-tav-V’tzeeva-nu L’had-leek Nayr Shel Chanukah.
