Dear Friends,
We know the courage it takes for someone in need to walk through our doors to ask for help.
The people who come to us aren’t asking for hand outs, but for a hand up and out of poverty.
They may be seeking a job, struggling with mental illness or a prison record, refugees seeking
a safe haven, immigrants seeking to get right with the law, youth seeking safety from gangs,
parents wanting to learn how to care for a child, students struggling in school, families living on
the street desperate for safe affordable housing, seniors hungry for food and companionship,
alone in a nursing home or needing care in their own home. Each person coming through our
door is welcomed by caring and professional staff and dedicated volunteers.
Catholic Charities exists because neither government programs, businesses, nor private
philanthropy (as great as they are) can meet all the needs in our community. We are the catalyst
that is needed for the private and public sectors to partner and create a thriving community.
Catholic Charities creates ladders of opportunity for motivated people to create a better life for
themselves and their families. This past year we served over 41,000 people regardless of culture
or belief. Catholic Charities provides comprehensive social services through Children, Youth
and Family Development, Economic Development, Behavioral Health, Housing, and Older
Adult Services. We help organize communities to disrupt ineffective systems while creating
innovative solutions to reduce poverty through Social Enterprises, the Step Up Silicon Valley
network, and the Franklin McKinley Children’s Initiative.
Many thanks to all of our generous donors, foundations, corporate and government funders,
and volunteers for enabling us to continue to change lives for good!
Finally, we are happy to report that once again we were awarded Charities Navigator Four
Star rating. And so we are pleased to present you with the Catholic Charities Annual Report
for FY 2012-2013.
Thank you!

Volunteer Helps Families
Gain Stability
Josephine understands how important it is for
grandparents, who are the sole caregivers of their
grandchildren, to become legal guardians. She
found herself in
that position in
2001 when she
became the legal
guardian for her
grandson.
A certified
paralegal with 16
years of experience
in the Santa
Clara County
Public Guardians
office, Josephine
now volunteers for Catholic Charities’ Kinship
Resource Center helping grandparents and other
caregivers complete the documents to secure
legal guardianship of the children in their care.
“I wanted to use my skills to help people,” she says.
“It’s such an emotional time for these families
and the paperwork is quite extensive and
complicated, and hiring legal help is expensive.”
Josephine is a valued part of the team at the
Kinship Resource Center. Sara Reyes, Children,
Youth and Family Development Division Director,
says, “We like to talk about changing lives for
good, and Josephine is doing that.”
Science Opens Doors for Students
From Troubled Teen to Valedictorian
It doesn’t take a mathematical genius to understand this formula: students
who miss out on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM) education are being left behind in our high-tech future. Catholic
Charities is working to change the equation.
Dave moved with a rough crowd in middle
school, spending his first night in juvenile
hall at age 13. By age 14, he was taking
drugs and getting into fights on a regular
basis. How he got from there to serving as
valedictorian at his high school graduation
is a testament to the dedicated Catholic
Charities staff who helped him find his way
and his own determination.
A multi-pronged effort was launched to
bring STEM education to hundreds of
underprivileged students in the Santa Clara
Valley. From a summer program for fourth,
fifth and sixth-graders, to a CORAL school
pilot program with San Jose State University,
and efforts at Kennedy School to launch a
full STEM program. Catholic Charities opens
doors for students to become problemsolvers, innovators, and the core of the new
high-tech workforce.
That’s especially important here in the Santa Clara Valley. As Sara Reyes,
Director of Catholic Charities’ Children, Youth and Family Development
Division says, “There is limited representation of Latino students in science
and engineering programs at the university level. We need to make sure
all children have access to high-quality STEM programming at an early age
and pique their interest in these careers.”
“I spent eight months in jail when I was 16,” says Dave, who is now 20. “I just
figured my life was going to be gangs and prison. I was all tattooed.”
Dave received help through Catholic Charities’ Vocational and
Educational Reentry Services, which works with high-risk offenders to
help them get the tools they need to become productive members
of society. Guidance managers work one-on-one to connect program
participants to vocational and educational services, mental health
counseling, tattoo removal, and other services.
Now Dave is the proud father of a six-month-old baby girl and is looking
forward to his future. He dreams of becoming an underwater welder.
“Catholic Charities helped me get to where I am today,” Dave says.

Dear Friends of Catholic Charities,
Over the past year, you have helped Catholic Charities make a tremendous difference in the lives of
countless people in our shared community. I do not think it is an exaggeration to say that the Santa Clara
Valley would be a much different place today were it not for the support and involvement of people like you.
Through your commitment to Catholic Charities and your dedication to our shared Christian values, you lift
up those who are in need of a helping hand and a warm heart. From ministering to souls in need, to restoring
the self-respect and hope of those less fortunate by providing them with the skills and tools they need to live
purposeful lives, supporters like you are living out Christ’s call to help those who cannot help themselves.
Catholic Charities, as the crucial social justice arm of our Church, helps us meet the challenges set forth
for us by Christ: Love one another, serve those in need, and recognize and celebrate the dignity of each of
our neighbors.
Your contributions – both financial and spiritual – ensure that Catholic Charities can continue to help the
many thousands of community members throughout the Valley of Saint Clare who are in need. Please take
a moment to read through this annual report and reflect on what, together, we have accomplished in the
last twelve months.
Your compassion and faith serve as a vivid reminder for me that God’s love is present in each of us, and for
that, as well as for your faithful support of Catholic Charities of the Santa Clara County, I am truly grateful.
With every best wish and kind regard, I remain,
Sincerely yours,
Patrick J. McGrath

Volunteers Touch the Lives CORAL Instructor Stays
of John XXIII Seniors
Involved
New Program Tackles
Children’s Mental Health
Every day, seniors are learning skills like dancing
or English, exercising, getting their blood
pressure checked, picking up a weekly bag of
groceries, accessing needed social services and
much more at John XXIII Multiservice Center
in downtown San Jose. None of this would be
possible without the help of volunteers.
Childhood should be
a carefree time. But
the sad reality is many
children battle with
anxiety, depression,
and behavior disorders,
all of which can interfere with learning and
development. Catholic Charities is working
to help those afflicted children with its new
Prevention and Early Intervention program.
“Contributions by volunteers bring life to
John XXIII and, most importantly, touch the
life of each senior,” says Hoa Hong, Catholic
Charities’ Center Coordinator at John XXIII.
“We would not be able to operate the center
without the help of volunteers on both a
monetary and spiritual level.”
More than 120 volunteers give their time to the
center like Eugenie. She is a retired English-asa-second-language instructor who has been
teaching English classes at the center for three
years. “I really enjoy working with the seniors,”
Eugenie says. “Most of them are Chinese and
Vietnamese and they are eager to learn English.
Some of them really want to be able to converse
in English with their grandchildren.”
Thanks to a nearly $1.3 million grant from the
Santa Clara County Department of Mental
Health, several organizations are working
together through Catholic Charities’ CORAL
network to get children the services they need.
As a young teen, Alexi participated in Catholic
Charities’ Young Women’s Empowerment
program. Today, she serves as an instructor at
Shirakawa Elementary School.
“No matter what kind of day I’m having, it always
gets better when I get to CORAL and see the
kids,” Alexi says. “They are so enthusiastic and
eager to learn. It just reminds me to keep going
and stay focused on what is positive.”
Alexi is one of several CORAL after-school
program instructors who first became involved
with Catholic Charities as young people. It is
a testament to Catholic Charities’ ability to
inspire young people and help them improve
their lives that Alexi returned to the youth
center as an adult.
Job Assistance Pays Off
For the better part of a decade, Caressa struggled to get a job and turn her life around. Now, thanks to
the help she received from Catholic Charities’ Focus for Work and her own persistence, Caressa has held
down a job for nearly a year and is hoping to move into her own place with her 7-year-old daughter.
“Everyone at Catholic Charities has been great,” she says. “They helped me get my resume together
and took me to job fairs. My case manager also connected me to group counseling.”
“Because our CORAL after-school program is
already so well-established in the district, we
launched the program with more than 100
referrals,” says Angela Albright, Catholic Charities
Behavioral Health Deputy Division Director.
Program therapists, behavior specialists, CORAL
staff and family partners work with teachers and
school administrators to identify students who
may be at risk for mental health issues and help
them improve their lives.
Helping Immigrants
Achieve Permanent Status
Last April, more than 1,500 immigrants from
all over the world gathered at Gilroy to attend
Citizenship Day events sponsored in part by
Catholic Charities.
“The only true permanent
status is citizenship,” says
Robert Yabes, Program
Director for Catholic
Charities’ Immigration
Legal Services (ILS), who
helped organize the events. “It’s very important
for immigrants to become citizens so they can
fully engage in their communities.”
Focus for Work offers job development and placement
services and helps participants build skills like resume
writing and interviewing. A job coach helps participants
navigate the employment application process, offering
encouragement and direction, and providing job
retention support.
That’s why Catholic Charities offers a wide range
of immigration services. In fact, ILS has helped
more than 700 young immigrants file applications
under the deferred action policy announced by
the Obama administration last year.
“I wanted to give up a couple of times,” Caressa says. “I went
on so many job interviews, but I had a hard time actually
landing a job. The support I received from Catholic
Charities really helped me stick with it. I want to keep
working hard and continue to get my life back on track.”
“Catholic Charities is working hard to ensure that
immigrants know what their options are and to
help them get on the path to citizenship,” Robert
says. “Immigrants are an integral part of this
country. We are a nation built by immigrants.”
