November 11 is the day set aside to honor our Veterans. The Preble
County District Library Board of Trustees has decided to honor the
service of our veterans year-round by making a change to the Library’s
fine policy.
Beginning in November, the Preble County District Library will waive
overdue fines for veterans. Those who have been a member of the
military can simply visit their local PCDL Branch and present proof of service. This is the
Library’s way of saying ‘Thank You’ to all those who have served our country.
Also in observance of Veteran’s Day, the Preble County Room Staff announced an addition
to their collection by unveiling the results of a project that they have been working on for
quite some time. Preble County Military Serving During the Vietnam Era is a compilation
of information gathered from microfilm, newspaper articles, and personal stories detailing
the service of Preble County Vietnam Veterans. This three volume set contains over 650
pages of information, including many photos. Those interested in learning more about
Preble County’s Vietnam Veterans will find this to be an invaluable resource.

Adult Summer Reading 2013
Title: Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother
Author: Amy Chua
Reviewer: Amy Montgomery
Review: Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother is
written by a Chinese-American mother of
two daughters who is also a Yale Law
professor. She shows differences between
Chinese traditional parenting and Western
parenting, She admits that her intention was
to prove that Chinese parenting style is
superior, but she realized while writing the
book that it is not always successful. The
book is full of humor and poignant family
moments. This is an excellent read for a
mother of pubescent daughters.

Message:
The library automatically purchases books by many popular authors. If
you are interested in any of the titles listed here, please request them at
your local branch library.
Holds can be placed on any title offered from the library’s catalog.
Sadly, best selling author Tom Clancy died on October 1,
2013 after a brief illness. This celebrated author was most
noted for his command of military technology. He was
able to describe and explain the most complicated
gadgetry in terms that any novice could understand. His
most noted character, CIA analyst Jack Ryan is the hero
featured in Clancy’s last book, Command Authority, which
will be released in early December.
HarperCollins recently launched a new digital-first line
called Witness that will offer mysteries, suspense, and
thrillers. Witness is part of the Impulse imprint that also
includes e-original romance, scifi/fantasy and young
adult books. HarperCollins is wading into the digital-first
market with both feet, trying to compete with
Amazon.com.
Witness launched in October, 2013 with ten titles: Darkness First by James
Hayman, The Drop by Howard Linskey, An Illustrated Death by Judi
Culbertson, The Art of Drowning by Frances Fyfield, Prince by Rory
Clements, The Murder Wall by Mari Hannah, Hunted by Emlyn Rees, Black
Dog by Stephen Booth. There are two titles the library cannot get:
Cambridge Blue by Alison Bruce and Doyle After Dark by John Shirley.
Legos®: Adults love ‘em too

Title: Death by Panty Hose (A Jaine Austen Mystery)
Author: Laura Levine
Reviewer: Trisha Smith
Review: Laura Levine is an awesome writer!
She brings her characters to life. Her mystery
is believable and is easy to read along with. I
enjoy the surprise that she brings to the
ending of her “who dunit” books with her
cat Prozac.
Editor’s note: There are 12 books in this long-running series.
Death in pantyhose is the newest title to be added. For a
reading list of titles go online to Fantastic Fiction.com.
Adults participated in our Lego contest for the first time
this year! Since there is an interest in building block art,
we decided to add to our shelves several excellent books showcasing the
art form. All three titles will be available soon!

mystical senses tell her that there’s more
to the death than meets the eye. Her

A Don’t-Miss-This Recommendation
I just finished Barbara Davis’ fabulous couldn’t-read-it-fast-enough
debut novel, The Secrets She Carried. Part women’s fiction, part
historical novel, the writing evokes shades of Phyllis Whitney and
Mary Stewart without being too gothic. The writing itself is pure
poetry, but doesn’t overtake the telling of the story. If you’re in the
mood for a haunting southern tale that will have you waiting
breathlessly for the author’s next book, try The Secrets She Carried.
~C. Richter~
The Secrets She Carried / Barbara Davis: Though
Peak Plantation has been in her family for
generations, Leslie Nichols can’t wait to rid herself
of the farm left to her by her estranged
grandmother Maggie—and with it the disturbing
memories of her mother’s death, her father’s
disgrace, and her unhappy childhood. But Leslie
isn’t the only one with a claim to Peak.
Jay Davenport, Peak’s reclusive caretaker, has his own reasons for
holding onto the land bequeathed to him by Leslie’s grandmother.
Before she died, Maggie hinted at a terrible secret surrounding
Adele Laveau, a lady’s maid who came to Peak during the 1930s and
died under mysterious circumstances. Jay is haunted by Maggie’s
story, yet the truth eludes him—until Leslie uncovers a cryptically
marked grave on the property.

A New Subgenre
As they delve into the mystery of Adele’s death, Leslie and Jay
discover shocking secrets that extend deep into the roots of Leslie’s
family tree—secrets that have the power to alter her life forever.
There is a new subgenre gaining in popularity called “New Adult”.
This subgenre is being marketed to post adolescents and young
adults ages 18 to 26.
Set in Small Town Ohio
New Adult fiction fills the gap between Young Adult and Adult
fiction - that gray area where the innocence and naivetee of
childhood is just beginning to give way to perspective and insight
that eventually leads to adulthood.
Welcome Back to Apple Grove / C. H. Admirand:
Grace Mulcahy thought she'd finally gotten Apple
Grove, Ohio, out of her system. Then she's lured
Many of the books published in the subgenre contain dark themes

depression. These books tend to cater to former Twilight fans.

When firefighter Pat Garaham sees Grace, it's like a five-alarm bell
Other themes include first jobs, starting college, first love, wedding
engagements and marriages, or starting new families - all of those
firsts most everyone experiences when becoming an adult. They
can also be graphic in content containing adult themes - which is
why they do not fit into the Young Adult category.
New Adult can be combined with all of the other subgenres; SciFi,
horror, paranormal, dystopian, etc.

Highly Anticipated Finale...
3rd Book in the All Souls Trilogy
The Book of Life / Barbara Harkness: After traveling through time
in Shadow of Night, the second book in Deborah Harkness’
enchanting series, historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire
scientist Matthew Clairmont return to the present to face new
crises and old enemies.
At Matthew’s ancestral home at Sept-Tours, they reunite with the
cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches—with one
significant exception. But the real threat to their future has yet to
be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its
missing pages takes on even more urgency.
In the trilogy’s final volume, Harkness deepens her themes of
power and passion, family and caring, past deeds and their
present consequences. In ancestral homes and university
laboratories, using ancient knowledge and modern science, from
the hills of the Auvergne to the palaces of Venice and beyond, the
couple at last learn what the witches discovered so many
centuries ago. Due out in July, 2014.
News on the romantic fiction front
Lynn Viehl ( AKA S. L. Viehl, Gena Hale, and Jessica
Hall) has written an alternate history, steampunk
series that had this reader confused. But thanks to a
post found in goodreads.com (a wonderful readers
advisory website BTW) I think I have it figured out. In
January, 2014, Viehl will release Disenchanted & Co.
The book is actually an amalgam of two recently
published titles: Her Ladyship’s Curse and His
Lordship Possessed. The synopsis for the series
sounds quite interesting: In the Provincial Union of
Victoriana, a steampunk America that lost the Revolutionary War,
Charmian "Kit" Kittredge makes her living investigating crimes of
magic. While Kit tries to avoid the nobs of high society, she follows
mysteries wherever they lead.
Why the publisher decided to split the book into two parts, then offer
both under one title later on is a mystery. Oh, well, at any rate the
mystery is solved The book comes out in late January, 2014.
Darynda Jones will unveil the sixth book in her
Charley Davidson grim reaper series. Sixth Grave
on the Edge in May, 2014. If you like stories
mixed with paranormal and humor, give her
series a try.
Young Adult author Cassandra Clare will release the sixth book of her
Immortal Instruments series. City of Heavenly Fire comes out in May,
2014. The motion picture based on the first book, City of Bones, was
recently in theaters.
Reminder: Take Down Twenty by Janet Evanovich comes out
in late November. What will Stephanie be up to next? The tag
line reads: “Stephanie Plum has her sights set on catching a
notorious mob boss. If she doesn’t take him down, he may
take her out.”
The title for the third book in Nora Roberts Cousins
O’Dwyer trilogy has been revealed, but you’ll have to wait
a while to read the book. Blood Magic won’t be released
until 2015. Note: As always with forecasting, titles are
subject to change.

Moody Cleveland Bierly, Jr.
Everyone called him Sonny. Moody Cleveland Bierly, Jr. was a chubby child, traipsing about the
streets of Lewisburg, Ohio during the 1930s and ‘40s. He was the eighth child born to Moody
Cleveland “Cleve” and Margaret Bernheisel Bierly on September 24, 1932 in Preble County, Ohio.
Cleve Bierly was my great grand uncle on my father’s side.
Hardship came early to Sonny’s young life when, in 1937, at the age of five, he came down with the
dreadful scarlet fever. He survived, but his mother, who had been nursing him back to health,
contracted the disease herself. She was taken to the hospital, but died six days later at the age of
forty-three. The Lewisburg Leader newspaper stated that Margaret, who was a native of Lewisburg,
“...was a fine character and her death cast a gloom over the community.”
Photograph that appeared in the Lewisburg
Leader, 1950.
Sonny’s mother died on December 30, 1937. By August of that same year, his father, Cleve, married
a woman by the name of Bonnie, a local restaurant owner. However, by the 1940 U. S. Census, they
would be divorced.
Sonny’s sister, Josephine Bierly Chrisman Crowe Kreitzer (she married three times!) died in 1947 at the Stillwater
Sanatorium located in Dayton, Ohio. In Josephine’s obituary that appeared in the Register Herald, Sonny is placed in the
Preble County Children’s Home. He is living there because his father, Cleve, is also a patient at Stillwater. Josephine and
Cleve would both die from pulmonary tuberculosis and diabetes mellitus. Josephine died in April at age twenty-six and
Cleve would die in August at the age of sixty. I have been unable to discover how long Sonny stayed in the children’s home.
Moody Cleve Bierly
On September 26, 1949, Sonny enlisted in the U. S. Army. The United States was at war with Korea. The following story
appeared in the December 21, 1950 edition of The Leader: “Sonny” Bierly with U. S. Army Unit in Korea. (It seems incredible but is
nevertheless true that the chubby Moody C. Bierly, whom it seems was trodding the streets of Lewisburg only a few years ago and was
known as “Sonny,” is now 18 and is with the U. S. Army in Korea. His parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Moody Cleve Bierly and he is
a nephew of E. J. Bierly, local business man. Learning recently that “Sonny” was in Korea and that he had written his sister, Mrs. Troy
(Beth) Beldon of Detroit, we wrote her for further information. – Editor’s Note.)
Mrs. Beldon said: Pfc. Moody C. Bierly, his full name, enlisted in September of ’49 and spent most of the first year in radio school at
Ft. Monmouth, N. J. “Sonny” was sent to Japan the last of September, 1950, where he was given specialized training and then was
flown to Korea around the middle of October.
“Sonny” is 18 and has two years to go before his tern of enlistment will expire. He is with the Signal Radio Relay company in the 10th
division.
His last letter to me is in part as follows: “This is the first chance I’ve had to write since I wrote from Tokyo. We are now in Pusan,
Korea. All we do is work and eat with very little sleep. This will go on until we get our relay stations set up to establish
communications between here and Seoul.
From what I’ve heard I will be in Seoul from then until my term of enlistment is up. We may go on north of the Parallel if they need
us, but we can’t be sure. If the war ends (and here it sounds like it is just starting from what our officers say) we will stay in one spot
the rest of the time. Who knows? – maybe we’ll be made infantry replacements. Anyway our living can’t be much worse that it is. The
worst thing is the chow and the smell is next. Still it isn’t as bad as it may well be in Seoul.
There are a couple thousand guerillas left between here and Seoul, but they are spread about. The relay teams are the ones to
worry because we are going to replace the teams already knocked out. It hasn’t been more than three weeks since the last one was
knocked out by a band of guerillas. The guys didn’t have a chance – they were all asleep and had their throats cut.
We’re going to have a few Korean soldiers with us to stand guard so that won’t happen to us. I won’t be able to sleep nights for awhile.
Mrs. Beldon added: “He also stated that he expected his second stripe soon. We are anxiously waiting for further news from
“Sonny” since his last letter was written November 5. His address is: Pfc. Moody C. Bierly RA-16296307, 518 Sig. Rad. Rel. Co. APO 59,
San Francisco, Calif., to Postmaster.
“Give my best regards to everyone there and may I wish you all the very best for the coming New Year.
Looking at the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs BIRLS Death File, 1850-2010, Sonny was released from the Army on October 15, 1952.
At some point, he settled in Michigan and, according to a 1960 Royal Oak, Michigan City Directory, married a woman named Helene C.

Gardening,
Grandma? Seriously?
Not on MY watch!
Bwahahaha!
Sprouting Off: Life in the Garden
I’m just sayin…
Chaos reigns when a grandchild enters your life. You realize right
away that you’ve forgotten what life was like with a little one
underfoot. Walking out of the room is a major feat!
Garden BEFORE grandbaby - neat and tidy
You find your life stuffed on the tallest shelf of the deepest cabinet
you own in hopes that little fingers cannot venture there. Drawers
are emptied and child locks are installed; gates are erected to
block off every entrance to every room not baby-proofed beyond
recognition.
But look at that face. How can you resist it? I surely can’t. My
house is a jumble, my garden a mess, but I don’t care a wit. My
grandbaby is awake and he’s ready to play. The rest can surely
wait for another day...or two. He won’t be a baby forever.
~Cheryl Richter~
Moody Cleveland Bierly, Jr. Cont.
They lived on Dreon Street and Moody was an
employee at ChryslerMissile. Built in 1953, the
Michigan Ordinance Missile Plant was operated
by the Army. The Chrysler Company served as
contractor. I don’t know what Moody did at
Chrysler Missile, but I do know that this is where
the Redstone and Jupiter missiles were built.
Sonny and Helene may have had one son born in
either 1960 or 1966.
Moody Cleveland “Sonny” Bierly, Jr. died on
December 15, 1993 while living in Grand Rapids,
Kent County, Michigan. He was sixty-one years
old.

West Elkton Library
Mickie Gayhart,
Branch Librarian
First, I want to thank everyone for their support during the past 10 years. I have met some really great people, kids and families. It has
been a wonderful journey. Following are a few great things that are happening at the West Elkton Library:
The library had a change in its hours of operation this past year. The new hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 6pm, and
Thursdays from 12-5pm. Thanks to the levy and the PCDL Board of Trustees we have enjoyed an extra three hours of operation each week.
Summer Reading was a huge success! Dig into Reading was the theme for younger children of which 32 participants read 315 hours.
Beneath the Surface was the teen theme. There were seven teens who read 130 hours. Groundbreaking Reads was the adult theme of
which there were 25 participants. At the end of the reading program, we had a magic show, Diggn’ for Dinos, performed by Dr. T Rex (Paul
Adams). This year, 48 people attended the magic show. Summer reading is one of the highlights of our year at the West Elkton Branch
library. Patrons and Library Staff are on the edge for next year’s summer reading!
It is our duty as the local librarians to work with the school, so we volunteer with the West Elkton PTO doing all we can to encourage
young readers, and offer help with homework, too.
The West Elkton Library now offers “Grab & Go” Book Bundles. You can find these in our adult and children’s areas. Each bundle is handselected books that fit a theme, such as holidays, transportation, dinosaurs, cookbooks and health. Stop in and grab and a book bundle.
It means so much to us to have a wonderful Friends group. They are so supportive of the West Elkton Library. The friends group host fund
-raising events like book and bake sales throughout the year to help supply some of the things we need and to pay for certain programs
like summer reading. We owe them a BIG THANKS. In November, our Friends will vote in new officers. Friends will host a holiday open
house on Saturday, December 7th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to kick off the 2014 membership drive. Refreshments will be provided and
they would love for you to stop in to see what is going on at the West Elkton Library. You can be a Friend of the Library. It’s not just about
attending meetings or holding an office. Your talent and ability can be used in all sorts of ways. Please stop in at the library on the
December 7th Holiday Open House and see what you can do.
We love all of our patrons at the West Elkton library. It is our goal to create a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere in a place where they
can sit down and open up a world of possibilities beyond anything they can imagine.

It has been our privilege, the past four years, to
participate in the RAH (Reading at Home) program
at the Camden Primary School. Mrs. Campbell, the
Principal, invites West Elkton and Camden libraries
to help kick off RAH. We help get the kids excited
about reading at home. We have performed skits,
and given out prizes and books to promote RAH.
We are grateful for the opportunity to help the
students get excited about reading. Read S’more
Books is this year’s theme. The Camden and West
Elkton Libraries are once again holding a contest to
see which classroom can checkout and RAH the most books. The class with the highest total at the end of the school year will get a S’more
party from the Friends of the Library. Teachers and students can both participate. Remember to check out books and READ AT HOME!

Amish Vines and Orchards, Book 3
For Every Season / Cindy Woodsmall: Working
hard to develop a new Amish community
outside of Unity, Maine, Rhoda Byler is fully
committed to rehabilitating an orchard with
business partner Samuel King. But an impulsive
decision has created an unexpected strain in her
relationship with her beau, Samuel’s brother,
Jacob, threatening plans for the orchard. Amidst
mounting tension in matters of the heart and
business, Rhoda finds that this fledging
settlement feels like the home she has always
longed for, and she begins to embrace the Godgiven, heightened intuition that has always felt like a burden to her.
She longs for Jacob to fully be free of his past, so they can work
towards the future together.
But as Rhoda uses her gift to unpack an old secret with her Englisch
neighbors, it is not her beau but an unlikely ally that cheers her on.
With the orchard on shaky ground and Jacob’s plans in question, Rhoda
is determined to see things through to harvest. But can she trust her
insight to direct her path in matters of the heart?
Women of Lancaster County, Book 4
An unexpected surprise awaits Fans of this popular series!
The Amish Seamstress / Mindy
Starns Clark and Leslie Gould: Izzy
Mueller is an exceptional listener
and gifted caregiver. She's also a
talented seamstress. As the young
woman sits with her elderly
patients, she quietly sews as they
share their stories. She's content
with her life until circumstances
reconnect her with someone she
once loved. Zed Bayer, a
Mennonite, is not what her family
is hoping for in a spouse, and his
creative interest in filmmaking is
definitely at odds with her Amish upbringing.
As Izzy is swept up again in Zed and renews her friendship
with his sister, Ella, she begins to ask questions about her
own life--her creative longings and historical interests, her
relationships and desire for romance, and most importantly,
her faith. What is the path God has for her? Can she learn
from the past of both her family's and Zed's--or must she
forge a completely different future of her own?
Homekeeping
This, That and the Other…Cheryl Richter
We took our grandchild to the zoo last month. I ate an
entire bag of green and pink cotton candy all by myself. It
was sooo good, but remorse quickly set in.
How many calories do you suppose I
consumed? Don’t answer that! I think the newest diet
book to hit the library shelves is in my future: The
Shift: How I Finally Lost Weight and Discovered a
Happier Life by Tory Johnson. Let me guess. Cotton
candy is probably not part of her dieting strategy!
I love pants that have an elastic waistband (see above) and after
browsing through all of the wonderful new cookbooks that are
being added to the library collection, I’m thinking I may have to go
up a size (note to self: work on self-control.)
