By the time you read this, several events have taken place. We will have been to BRCC’s Labor of Love Car Show. The weather was great and we proudly awarded CCCC’s Sponsor Award to our favorite Corvette, even though it was white. Imagine that….. Jackie Goldberg won “Best of Show” in the Luminary Category. I don’t think she has washed her corvette since.. Lloyd St. Germain June 9 Jackie Boudreaux June 10 Patricia Krystek June 10 Garnet Branch June 21 Jeanette Dennies June 24 The tri club Crawfish Boil was the best ever. The venue and the weather could not have been better. And the crawfish were boiled to perfection. Ancil Wilkinson June 26 The Corvette community suffered a great loss, the passing of Ralph Adams. We will all miss Ralph, his enthusiasm and attention to detail in everything he did for us. All of the area clubs are participating in funding a bench in his memory at the National Corvette Museum. Deanna Pastorello June 30 We looked great in our new white club shirts. You could easily tell where we were and how proud we are of our club. The trip to the National WWII Museum was an outstanding event and those who attended, even if they had been to the museum, saw new exhibits and some experienced sinking in a submarine. Hmmm. I had no problem. I wore my PFD. That’s Personal Flotation Device, for you land lubbers. The 50th Anniversary Party was a great success. We had over 100 members and guests attending. Of particular interest is the number of “Members of Yesteryear” that attended. They brought some interesting memorabilia and told us about Crescent City Corvette Club of Yesterday. We had our honorary member, Craig Eppling, GM Regional Director of Communications say a few words and he presented the club with a signed copy of the book that Will Cooksey (former plant manager) wrote, congratulating the club on their 50th. We presented Roger Gorman, Director of Development, Children’s Hospital, a check for $6,500.00 from the proceeds of our LEGENDS Car Show and their escrow account. With my new laptop, Charlie Horton had another shot at explaining his ride at Ron Fellows Corvette Performance School in Parump (named after the two rumps you see looking at the mountains), NV. WOW! You gotta go there….. Our By-laws were amended by acclimation at the general membership meeting to read in the event of the disbandment of CCCC, as unlikely as that is, all property is to be liquidated and after all financial liabilities are paid, all remaining funds are to be donated to Children’s Hospital, New Orleans. Upcoming events: June 1st – “Cruisin’ the Teche” and June 28th – “Back Road Trip to Bo’s Steak House in Franklinton, La. More about these events later in the “Bulletin” CCCC Welcomes New Members! The decision was unanimous in favor. A vote was also taken on an amendment to the previous motion to open a Memorial Account, also established by this amendment, for those who wanted to personally donate in memory of Ralph. The first $1250.00 would replace the expenditure from the operating fund. In the event more than $1250.00 was received, the money over that amount would be held in the Memorial Account for future use. The decision was unanimous in favor. If you would like to make a donation to the Crescent City Corvette Club Memorial Fund in the name of Ralph Adams, or would merely like to make a donation to the fund, please mail your donation to: Elisha Darcey 3804 Lake Huron Dr. Harvey, LA 70058 Thank you, Felix Felix J. Famularo PRESIDENT Page 4 THURSDAY, MAY 8, 2014 The Story of the 1962: David Donoho's Donated Vette David Donoho was a die-hard Corvette enthusiast, developing an infatuation from a young age and even saving up enough money to buy his first – a brand new 1962 – when he was in high school. David was so obsessed, in fact, that he earned the nickname “The Weather Man” because his friends would tease him about how closely he would watch the weather, and quickly take his Corvette home when there was a chance of rain. David loved the car and had a kindred spirit towards the car… so when it came time to make plans for his estate he knew he wanted it to go to a loving home where it would be respected and cared for. “David didn’t want it sold; he wanted it to remain well maintained by those who would protect it,” said longtime friend and attorney Beth Sease. Beth had suggested David consider donating his prized vehicle to the National Corvette Museum. “Wendell [Strode, Executive Director] visited and developed a relationship with David. Wendell assured David that the Museum would preserve it according to his wishes.” “David was an unassuming and simple man,” said Beth. She added that as a long time blue-collar worker, David saved his money and invested it wisely to have the funds to support his Corvette hobby. David was the proud owner of four Corvettes in his lifetime – a 1987, 2001 and 2006 (in addition to the 1962) and all were garage kept. He personally cared for the cars and only had people he trusted do work on them. As David’s health prevented him from being able to get out and enjoy the car, Beth encouraged him to donate his 1962 before his passing to reap maximum donation and tax benefits. The car is black with red interior and mostly in its original condition – with the exception of the convertible top being replaced with a hard top. In 2011, David turned over the keys to his beloved car – a car he had owned all of its life… just over 50 years. Beth says that turning the car over to the museum seemed to be the best thing to benefit David and preserve his memory. After various health issues, David passed on June 6, 2013 at the age of 76. In his will he left another gift to the Page 5 museum… funds to care for his car. “David’s cash gift will help us ensure that his car is maintained in a way that would please him,” said Wendell. “To be gifted a Corvette that has had only one owner and been kept in such great condition all these years is rare.” On February 12, 2014 Mother Nature struck the Corvette Museum, taking David’s prized car several feet down into a sinkhole. Luckily, the Corvette was one of the last to fall in and suffered minor damage in comparison to the others. GM’s Design Center in Warren, MI will be overseeing the restoration of the car. “While it breaks our heart that this happened to David’s car, we know that it will be in good hands with GM overseeing the repairs. Several experts from the National Corvette Restorers Society have also reached out to offer their expertise,” said Wendell. “We look forward to getting the car repaired and back to its former glory.” Posted by Corvette Museum Cool Internet Link!!!! I recently received an email from a friend in the Central Arkansas Corvette Club. In the email was a link to an internet site where you can view an archive of hundreds of automobile sales brochures. In browsing the site I found ads for vehicles that go back to 1905. All of the major US brands are there and many minor ones as well. Sorry, no foreign brands are listed. In the “Miscellaneous” area you can find adds for many auto accessory companies, such as tires, motor oil, spark plugs, and much more. Didn't you want to warn the driver of the situation before that slight inconvenience became a calamity? What if the vehicle with the low tire pressures is the one you're driving? Wouldn't you want to be warned? The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has developed a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard that requires the installation of tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) that warn the driver when a tire is significantly underinflated. The standard applies to passenger cars, trucks, multipurpose passenger vehicles and buses with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less, except those vehicles with dual wheels on an axle. Maintaining the correct tire pressure for a vehicle is an important factor in how much load its tires can safely carry. The correct pressure will carry the weight without a problem. Too little tire pressure will eventually cause catastrophic tire failure. Tires aren't invincible. They are made of individual layers of fabric and steel encased in rubber. If a tire is allowed to run low on air pressure, the rubber is forced to stretch beyond the elastic limits of the fabric and steel reinforcing cords. When this happens, the bond between the various materials can weaken. If this is allowed to continue, it will eventually break the bonds between the various materials and cause the tire to fail. And even if the tire doesn't fail immediately, once a tire is weakened it won't heal after being reinflated to the proper pressure. So if a tire has been allowed to run nearly flat for a period of time, the tire should be replaced, not simply repaired or reinflated. Studies have shown that running tires with too little air pressure is not uncommon. It's been estimated that about one out of every four vehicles on the road is running on underinflated tires. This also means that one out of every four drivers is needlessly sacrificing their vehicle's fuel economy and handling, and reducing their tires' durability and tread life. This has made tire pressure maintenance an important safety issue throughout the automotive industry and caused the U.S. government to pass legislation mandating tire pressure monitoring systems. The main purpose of these systems is to warn the driver if their tires are losing air pressure, leaving the tires underinflated and dangerous. What types of systems are being used now? How do they work? Which works the best? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides vehicle manufacturers options with which they can comply with the law. One option is to install a direct tire pressure monitoring system that uses pressure sensors located in each wheel to directly measure the pressure in each tire and warns drivers when the air pressure in any of their tires drops at least 25% below the recommended cold tire inflation pressure identified on the vehicle placard. Another option is to install an indirect tire pressure monitoring system that would warn the driver when a single tire has lost at least 25% of its inflation pressure compared to other tires on the vehicle. While direct systems could offer more precise warning thresholds, indirect systems cannot offer the same information or accuracy. What's the Difference? DIRECT VS. INDIRECT Direct Systems attach a pressure sensor/transmitter to the vehicle’s wheels. An in-vehicle receiver warns the driver if the pressure in any tire falls below a predetermined level. Direct systems are typically more accurate and reliable and most are able to indicate which tire is underinflated. Indirect Systems use the vehicle’s antilock braking system’s wheel speed sensors to compare the rotational speed of one tire versus the others. If a tire is low on pressure, it will roll at a different number of revolutions per mile than the other three and alert the vehicle’s onboard computer. Indirect systems (except for the TPMS on several 2009+ Audi models and 2010+ Volkswagen models) are unable to generate accurate readings in cases where all four tires are losing pressure at the same rate, such as the effects of time and temperature. Page 13 Direct Monitoring Systems Direct tire pressure monitoring systems measure, identify and warn the driver of low pressure. Because direct systems have a sensor in each wheel, they generate accurate warnings and can alert the driver instantly if the pressure in any one tire falls below a predetermined level due to rapid air loss caused by a puncture. In addition, direct tire pressure monitoring systems can detect gradual air loss over time. Some direct systems use dashboard displays that provide the ability to check current tire pressures from the driver's seat. Direct systems attach a pressure sensor/transmitter to the vehicle's wheel inside the tire's air chamber. Most Original Equipment and some aftermarket systems attach their air pressure sensor/transmitter to special tire valves. While the presence of a metal clamp-in valve typically identifies the presence of a direct tire pressure monitoring system, special snap-in rubber valves have also been used to support direct system sensors. The transmitter's signal is broadcast to the in-car receiver and the information is displayed to the driver. Some aftermarket and Original Equipment direct monitoring systems attach the sensor/transmitter to the wheel with an adjustable metal strap. These sensors/transmitters and their straps only weight a few ounces and allow virtually universal application on car and light truck wheels. Since standard snap-in rubber valves are still used for these applications, it is important that the owners of these systems let their tire installer know that the vehicle is equipped with a direct system banded to the wheel before they change the tires. Tire Rack works with wheel manufacturers to develop aftermarket wheels that accommodate direct tire pressure monitoring sensors/transmitters. This results in our ability to offer a wider selection of aftermarket alloy wheel styles that accept Original Equipment direct system components. Additionally, the Tire Rack's fitment specialists have carefully determined which aftermarket wheels will be compatible with the vehicle and system installed for customers purchasing Tire & Wheel Packages or wheel upgrades. Search results include notes regarding TPMS sensors and sensors can confidently be purchased online with wheels. Indirect systems use the vehicle's antilock braking system's wheel speed sensors to compare the rotational speed of one tire to that in another position on the vehicle. If one tire is low on pressure, its circumference changes enough to roll at a slightly different number of revolutions per mile than the other three tires. Reading the same signal used to support ABS systems, the vehicle manufacturers have programmed another function into the vehicle's onboard computer to warn the driver when a single tire is running at a reduced inflation pressure compared to the others. Unfortunately, indirect tire pressure monitoring systems have several shortcomings. Indirect systems won't tell the drivers which tire is low on pressure, and won't warn the driver if all four tires are losing pressure at the same rate (as occurs during the fall and winter months when ambient temperatures get colder). Additionally, our current experience with indirect systems indicates that they can generate frequent false warnings. We have found that false warnings may occur when the tires spin on wet, icy and snow-covered roads. In these cases, the false alarms would train the driver to disregard the tire pressure monitoring system's warnings, negating its purpose completely. Concerns While the Tire Rack applauds the emphasis on maintaining appropriate tire pressure and requiring a system that will warn the driver if low pressure is detected, we are concerned about the percentage of underinflation that the law permits before warning the driver. The driver of a passenger car that calls for 35 psi may not be warned about tire pressure loss until it drops to 26 psi depending on the type of monitoring system used. Under the same circumstances, a driver of a light truck that calls for 80 psi won't be warned until just 60 psi remains. In both of these cases, significant load capacity has been sacrificed before the driver is warned. The only way to overcome this obstacle would be to fit significantly oversized tires to every new vehicle that could compensate for a 25% loss in tire pressure before becoming overloaded. Unfortunately, these larger tires would add to gross vehicle weight, generate more rolling resistance and increase the vehicle's aerodynamic drag. This would result in a loss of fuel economy and increased gasoline consumption in direct contrast to the government's Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) requirements for cars and light trucks. While the legislation is well intended, we feel that direct tire pressure monitoring systems are the better means to warn the driver of low tire pressure before inconvenience becomes calamity. Additionally, we are concerned that the drivers of vehicles equipped with any tire pressure monitoring system will become over confident in the capabilities of their system and will be even less likely to confirm their vehicle's cold tire pressure with a pressure gauge at least once a month and before long trips. There are now many options for 2-piece wheels in the market. The 2-piece wheel design does not offer as wide a range of application that a 3-piece wheel allows, however they are more common in the market and the prices start well below the average 3-piece wheel. Some 2-piece wheels have the center bolted into a cast or cast/spun rim section and other manufacturers press centers into spun rim sections and weld the unit together. When BBS developed a new 2-piece wheel to replace the previous 3-piece street wheel, they used the special rim-rolling technology (originally developed for racing wheels) to give the rim section the weight and strength advantages similar to a forged rim. On the high-end of the 2-piece wheel market you can find wheels using forged rims and forged centers. Since these are only sold in small volume and due to the high development and production costs associated with the forging process, they tend to be on the high end of the price scale. Page 16 This is a new feature that will appear monthly as long as there are volunteers to answer questions and submit pictures. (Ed) This is weird, writing about myself, but since no one volunteered… This month we feature Bob & Elisha Darcey. Bob is a Fire Service veteran with 37 years on the job. He has specialized in Chemical, Biological, Nuclear and Explosive incidents for the last 25 years. Bob is also the Worship Minister (music) for his church. Elisha is the Assistant Controller for ACS-Louisiana (the redesigned Times Picayune Newspaper). They reside in Harvey, LA and have one daughter who resides in Zachary, LA with her husband and three children. Now for the questions: ED: Tell us Your “Corvette Story”. Bob: The funny thing is that I never intended to purchase a Corvette. I had found a two year old Porsche 911S in New Jersey that I was ready to purchase. Elisha & I were sitting in front of Leson Chevrolet, in traffic, when she saw a several Corvettes in the showroom and ask me if I ever considered one. We took a 2009 Cyber Grey Z51 MN6 Coupe with 3LT trim home the next day. That was in November 2008. I sold the 2009 and purchased a 2013 Night Race Blue Metallic Grand Sport MN6 Coupe with 3LT trim in November 2012 (pictured below. ED). We love it! ED: Why this car? Bob: Elisha will tell you that I like unique or unusual things. Midnight Race Blue Metallic was a brand new color and I had never seen one in the “wild”. So I took a chance and the color is spectacular. I ordered it with every option except the 4LT package and chrome wheels. It is exactly the car I wanted! ED: When you get a chance to see this car, with its Pearl White stripe package, take a look at the custom shift ball! It truly is a beautiful car!
