We spur entrepreneurs. We inspire innovation. We foster those with great ideas, passion and the fortitude to create a new business, pursue a dream or develop ideas unimaginable a few years ago. Our products and services enhance life, make us safer and healthier or entertain and educate us. As more devices have Internet addresses, they’ll connect to each other as well as us, bringing even more new opportunities. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® and our more than 2,000 innovative companies create economic growth, jobs and improve lives. CEA member companies develop, market and sell the products and services that entertain, inform and connect consumers. Sales of consumer electronics (CE) devices continue to grow with U.S. factory sales for 2014 up 2.4 percent over last year expected to reach a record $208 billion. CEA continues its mission to grow the industry through unique market research conducting two-dozen consumer studies each year, developing standards to ensure technologies connect with each other, working with legislators to ensure a level playing field for companies to compete, hosting the International CES® and providing members with access to business mentoring, promotional opportunities and networking events. The CE industry has expanded beyond its traditional borders to include all who focus on innovation, including content providers, auto makers, and most recently, our new Health and Fitness Division created to serve a new market devoted to consumers who want to engage more in their digital health and fitness. CEA encourages entrepreneurs every day through our startup membership. Come with an Idea Unleashing Innovation CEA also produces the International CES®, the world’s largest platform for innovation held each year in Las Vegas. As the place where innovation and technology converge to do business, CES draws thousands of tech companies from around the globe to discuss ideas, collaborate, learn and meet potential investors, partners and media. A surge of innovation is ready to unfold as long as unnecessary government policies don’t get in the way. We need a national strategy focused on innovation to create a culture that encourages success. CEA is leading the charge to reform our immigration laws to allow highly skilled immigrants, especially those with STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics degrees), to remain in the U.S. upon graduation and contribute to our economy. Strategic immigration is critical for America to remain a tech hub and global leader. This year, more than 3,500 companies showed products that will change society, solve problems and improve our lives. The popular Eureka Park Marketplace provides entrepreneurs a special location where they can share concepts and ideas with investors, buyers, media and international guests. The money earned from CES is reinvested into the industry to advance the initiatives that are vital to our businesses. 2 CE.org But while immigration law changes will help us retain our innovative edge, what about jobs in sales, service, installation and repair? CEA members should consider 2014 CEA Corporate Report hiring veterans. It makes business sense and is a chance to give back to our veterans who put their lives on the line for us. CEA has joined with other leading technology trade associations to launch USTechVets.org, an online resource created by the Northern Virginia Technology Council along with online employment provider monster. com – to match employers with talented veterans seeking careers in the technology industry. As a green association, CEA is working to make ecycling as easy as purchasing for consumers. Three years ago, the “Billion Pound Challenge” was created to recycle one billion pounds of electronic devices annually. In 2013, more than 620 million pounds of CE products were recycled – an increase of 35 million pounds over 2012. But a patchwork of state rules mandating recycling is complicating this goal. We need a national framework for recycling and legislation that allows the industry to develop innovative recycling solutions in partnership with states. More than 8,000 collection locations can be found at GreenerGadgets.org. CEA will continue to work to ensure both political parties address our serious fiscal situation and push back on those who want government to dictate how we design and build our products. We also will continue to encourage startups by supporting incubators and promote business-friendly policies. What can you do? CEA’s Innovation Movement supports action on the deficit, immigration and patent reform. We also support No Labels a group of legislators committed to working across party lines to solve problems. Sign up for free and support both of these groups to make your voice heard. At CEA we maintain a passion for excellence and a culture of innovation. As our industry continues to reinvent itself and create new ways to connect, entertain and educate people around the world, we ask you to join with us. Increasingly, CE startups and established businesses are being targeted by patent threats. These trolls are legal extortionists who destroy companies and jobs. Patent lawsuits are simple and inexpensive to bring and complex and costly to defend. The burden of frivolous lawsuits should be on the trolls. Let’s encourage our Congress to stop patent trolls and free innovators to do what they do best. And the proliferation of CE devices in automobiles has raised concerns about safe driving. CEA’s Innovating Safety campaign educates consumers about responsible use of in-vehicle products and also the safety benefits of these devices. A Rising Tide As CES demonstrates, innovation will continue to change lives in unexpected ways. Title III of the JOBS Act will go into effect this year and open up new avenues to fund disruptive innovation. And new technologies create spin-offs, ecosystems, accessories and more opportunities. So what’s next? Smartphones, tablets and headphones will remain vibrant but other areas also hold tremendous potential. Ultra HD, 3D printing, the Internet of Things, wearable tech, robotics, driverless cars, sensing devices and an array of applications, services and technologies will transform our economy, save lives and delight consumers. 2014 CEA Corporate Report GARY SHAPIRO JAY MCLELLAN CEA President and CEO CEA Chair and President Leviton Security & Automation CE.org 3 THE INTERNATIONAL CES: INNOVATION IN ACTION What makes the International CES the most talked about technology tradeshow? Unbridled innovation, the power of consumer technologies, boundless energy and strategic partnerships, are all part of the excitement of CES, owned and produced by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). More than 5,000 members of the global media come to CES to explore the latest innovations in consumer technology before they hit retail shelves. And 160,498 industry professionals from retailers and Fortune 500 executives to VCs, entrepreneurs and startups including executives from every major industry came to Las Vegas in 2014 to see, touch, interact and conduct business. From curved and flexible Ultra HDTVs and next generation smartphones to drones, robots, sensors, the Internet of Things, hi-res audio, connected cars and 3D printers and the latest in digital health and fitness technology, CES highlights the promise and future of technology. As the global venue for all involved in the business of consumer technologies, the 2014 International CES drew more than 35,000 international attendees from 145 countries to see innovation in action. Breaking previous records, the 2014 CES spanned two million net square feet of exhibit space with 3,500 exhibitors. Major players from top CE manufacturers, retailers and service providers unveiled what’s next for the industry through keynotes, press conferences and panels. The 2014 CES featured 25 market specific technology areas and 15 major product categories. From keynote addresses from Intel, Audi, Sony, Samsung, Yahoo and Cisco, to the Futurecast Keynotes with AT&T, Qualcomm and Ericsson to the Innovations Design and Engineering Awards Showcase to fledgling startups in Eureka Park, every major technology player was on hand. And across more than 250 conference sessions, industry experts shared their insight on everything from successful retail tactics to future trends in gaming, automotive tech and mobile. On the social front, the #CES2014 hashtag garnered 2.88 billion global impressions. 4 CE.org 2014 CEA Corporate Report First Look for Media Two days before the show floor opens, media attend CES Unveiled Las Vegas: The Official Press Event of CES. At the 2014 CES, press had access to 100 exhibitors such as 3M Touch Systems, Bell’O, Chevrolet, DISH, Fitbug, Holi, Liquid Image, Pure, Sculpteo and Tobii Technology. Already a global event, the CES Unveiled series has further expanded. For 2014, CES Unveiled includes events in Shanghai, Warsaw and São Paulo as well as pre-CES events in Paris, New York and Las Vegas. The CES Unveiled event series brings innovative technology companies, top media, buyers, analysts and key industry influencers together to showcase new products and tech trends leading up to the 2015 CES. Each Unveiled event is tailored to the local audience and highlights regional and global research, provides CES news and showcases curated products and technologies. Likewise, CES Press Day featured 25 exhibitor press conferences in 2014. Numerous product announcements included curved OLED displays, 3D glasses with stereo cameras; Myris, the Iris identifying authenticator; the latest Ultra HDTVs; 3D cameras that can scan objects for 3D printing; and even the first electric racing car. Inspiring Startups But the core of CES is the global startup community where entrepreneurs can highlight their innovative idea, 2014 CEA Corporate Report product or technology on the world’s stage. CES serves as a platform for innovators to take their business to the next level by giving them access to potential customers, partners, investors and the global media. Startups use Eureka Park at CES as a proving ground to launch their new consumer technology products. This year it featured more than 200 exhibitors–30 percent larger than 2013–in partnership with UP Global, the National Science Foundation (NSF), General Electric (GE) and AT&T. And for the first time UbiFrance brought 11 French startups to Eureka Park. The new Eureka Park: NEXT is designed for mid-stage startups that have launched a product in the past year while Academia Tech focuses on the latest technologies coming from universities. Also new for 2014, the Indiegogo Zone featured hardware campaigners from around the globe who shared experiences about raising funds on the online platform. The UP Global LIVE Stage, sponsored by GE, included panels with entrepreneurs, investors, corporate executives and media. UP Global also hosted mentor sessions and pitch competitions. CES also offers events curated for startups like the invitation-only Entrepreneurs Reception and Tech Cocktail’s Startup Night. Policy at CES CES brings together leaders from major global industries, as well as policy makers and government officials. The 2014 CES featured government officials including members of the United States House of Representatives, state elected officials, members of the Federal Communications Commission, including Chairman Tom Wheeler, and members of the U.S. Department of Commerce, including Secretary Penny Pritzker. Other representatives from the Federal Trade Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Highway CE.org 5 Traffic Safety Administration, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Federal Aviation Administration were also at the show. Entertainment Matters Entertainment Matters at CES is a content-focused program developed for Hollywood’s film, television and digital professionals, sponsored by Variety. This year, television host Maria Menounos served as the Entertainment Matters Ambassador for the program. New for the 2014 CES, Variety’s Breakthrough of the Year Awards celebrated talent from the fields of film, television, music and comedy at a red carpet event hosted by actor and television host Nick Cannon. But Hollywood stars, musicians and sports legends can be found across the show floor promoting the latest technologies. 6 CE.org Honoring the Industry The International CES Innovations Design and Engineering Awards honor outstanding advancements in consumer technology across 29 product categories. These awards recognize the most promising technology products and services in the industry. Entrants are judged by a panel of independent industrial designers and engineers as well as by media. In addition, CNET’s Next Big Thing: The New Hardware SuperSession focused on the future of sensor driven technology. The second annual CEA MoDev Hackathon featured nearly 100 award winning developers competing individually and as teams for up to $100,000 in cash and prizes and the Last Gadget Standing competition challenged contenders to present fast-paced product demos to a live CES audience. CEA is on the front lines in Washington, representing the consumer technology industry on public policy issues, offering the industry the voice it needs to grow and flourish. CEA advocates pro-innovation positions to state and federal lawmakers, regulators and the courts. CEA and its Innovation Movement focus on crucial policy issues. Ensuring Accessibility to Technologies Expanding the ITA CEA supports industry-driven solutions to ensure that innovative technologies and services are accessible to consumers with disabilities. CEA works with members of the accessibility community and the FCC as it implements the 21st Century Video and Communications Accessibility Act of 2010. CEA supports regulations that balance the twin goals of improved accessibility with the flexibility to innovate. CEA strongly supports a more comprehensive approach to the Information Technology Agreement (ITA) expansion negotiations and has been closely advising the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on the technology industry’s position. A successful ITA expansion will eliminate tariffs on CE products and save billions of dollars for our members. CEA has spent extensive time in Geneva consulting with the Secretary General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and ITA member nations. CEA also continues to coordinate with the U.S. government, and provide testimony and counsel for the ongoing negotiations. Encouraging Energy Efficiency Voluntary, market-oriented programs and initiatives, including industry-led standards, are a proven, costeffective and successful approach to advancing energy efficiency in consumer electronics. CEA works cooperatively with governments in the development of energy efficiency initiatives and opposes mandates that stifle innovation, reduce consumer choice, and limit product features and services. 12 CE.org Protecting Internet Freedom CEA supports Internet Freedom, both at home and abroad. The open and uncensored Internet is a great engine of social and economic progress – but it is under threat. Through the United Nation’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a number of countries are 2014 CEA Corporate Report attempting to establish greater governmental control of the Internet. Their efforts, if successful, could destroy the open and innovative technology platform that millions around the world need and trust. CEA commended Ambassador Terry Kramer and the U.S. for refusing to sign the revised International Telecommunication Regulations (ITRs) in December 2012. CEA continues to support an open Internet and encourages the federal government to make it the official U.S. policy to promote a domestic and global Internet free from government control. Promoting E-Waste Solutions CEA advocates for a national solution to e-waste in lieu of a patchwork of state-by-state, redundant and inefficient e-waste mandates. CEA’s eCycling Leadership Initiative known as the “Billion Pound Challenge” seeks to improve consumer awareness of the more than 8,000 e-waste recycling collection sites sponsored by industry; increase the amount of electronics recycled responsibly; increase the number of collection opportunities; and provide transparent metrics on ecycling efforts. The industry recycled 585 million pounds of CE products in 2013 and is committed to using vendors that employ the highest recycling standards, including third-party certification systems R2® and e-Stewards®. CEA hosts GreenerGadgets.org to help consumers easily locate a recycling location. Enhancing Air Travel Modernizing Online Sales Tax Collection CEA supports common-sense legislation that will end the unequal treatment of brick-and-mortar retailers by allowing states to collect sales tax that is legally owed from online retailers, removing an onerous and unfair burden from consumers. The Marketplace Fairness Act (S.743), which was passed in the Senate with bipartisan support, will give states the ability to collect this much needed, and legally due, source of revenue. 2014 CEA Corporate Report CEA commends the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) decision to allow airlines to expand the use of personal electronics and let passengers use their tablets, laptops and smartphones – without significant interruptions for takeoff and landing. CEA was one of several stakeholders represented on the FAA’s Portable Electronic Devices Aviation Rulemaking Committee which developed many of the recommendations incorporated into the FAA’s new guidelines. The FCC also opened a proceeding to remove technical barriers to in-flight data and voice communication over 3G and 4G networks. CE.org 13 Stopping Patent Litigation Abuse Protecting Fair Use and Innovation CEA supports patent legislation reform that combats the explosion of lawsuits brought by non-practicing entities, better known as “patent trolls.” Every dollar companies spend fighting baseless lawsuits is a dollar not spent on creating jobs and developing new products, making it more difficult for the American CE industry to compete internationally. CEA supports a balanced approach to enforcing intellectual property rights that opposes commercial piracy while protecting fair use and not limiting the advancement of innovation. CEA continues to oppose legislative and regulatory proposals that unduly burden legitimate commerce, impede innovation or restrict the free flow of information. Promoting Safe In-Vehicle Technologies CEA is committed to the principle that a driver’s highest priority is the safe control of their vehicle. To this end, CEA supports state legislation that prohibits texting while driving as well as a ban on cell phone use by those with a graduated driver’s license. CEA strongly believes however, that policymakers must recognize that many in-vehicle electronics contribute to safer driving and offer valuable benefits. CEA has two industrywide initiatives, the Innovating Safety campaign and the Driver Device Interface Working Group, that leverage educational efforts and recommend practices to address distracted driving. 14 CE.org 2014 CEA Corporate Report Increasing Spectrum and Mobile Broadband Access Enabling the Best and Brightest to Innovate As consumers rely more on wireless devices and services, our nation faces a looming spectrum shortfall. CEA strongly supports government efforts to free up spectrum for licensed and unlicensed use in three ways: (1) repurposing TV broadcast spectrum for valuable wireless broadband uses; (2) exploring spectrum sharing; and (3) clearing and repurposing underutilized federal spectrum. In particular, TV broadcast spectrum repurposed through voluntary incentive auctions will promote innovation and job creation, reduce the national debt, and amply compensate television broadcasters that choose to participate. Incentive auctions also will alleviate the spectrum crunch so Americans can enjoy robust wireless broadband that will power our innovation-driven economy. CEA supports strategic immigration reforms that encourage foreign-born entrepreneurs and U.S.-educated immigrants to remain in the U.S. to build businesses and create domestic jobs. CEA has backed reform legislation including Rep. Darrell Issa’s Supplying Knowledge-Based Immigrants and Lifting Levels of STEM Visas Act (SKILLS Visa Act) and the Senate’s bipartisan Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act. The changes to national immigration policy from these pieces of legislation will help to attract the best and the brightest to come and stay in the U.S. 2014 CEA Corporate Report Supporting Disruptive Innovation “Creative destruction” drives the market through innovation, displaces older technology or ideas with the new, and improves our lives. CEA supports disruptive technologies such as DISH Network’s “Hopper”, Aereo’s service to modernize access to broadcast television, and Uber’s Internet-based on-call car service. It is essential that disruptive innovation be allowed to move forward, and not be stopped by incumbent industries with legal or regulatory power in order to fuel the next generation of innovation. CE.org 15 ADVANCING TECHNOLOGY The pace of innovation in the CE industry is unmatched. Technical standards ensure that new advances harmonize with existing technologies. CEA’s Technology & Standards team works year-round with software developers and manufacturers to foster industry-wide collaboration and growth through the development of technical specifications and industry standards. Working groups and standards-focused events allow programmers and developers to test and tweak their latest designs in order to set industry standards. This process helps new products and technologies achieve industrywide deployment and interoperability with existing products and services. CEA published 14 new standards last year, helping regulators and industry leaders make informed public policy decisions about the most pressing issues facing the consumer technology market. With more than 1,100 participants and six dozen committees, subcommittees and working groups, CEA’s Technology & Standards program is a trusted source for rulemaking and is recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for its accomplishments. To achieve the broadest level of interoperability, the Technology & Standards committee, subcommittee and working group meetings are open to CEA members as well as non-members. 16 CE.org 2014 CEA Corporate Report CEA Achievements Uncompressed Digital Interfaces CEA published the latest edition of its standard addressing protocols, requirements and recommendations for the use of digital interfaces by CE devices, such as digital televisions (DTVs), digital cable, satellite, set-top boxes, DVD players/recorders, and other related sources or sinks. This edition accommodates Ultra High-Definition TV signals, as well as widescreen signals that are roughly the same dimensions as movie theater screens. Energy Efficiency CEA’s understanding of the consumer technology industry, combined with innovative and proven market research methodologies and analysis techniques, enables CEA to provide members with actionable research. CEA members have access to more than two dozen custom research reports produced each year. In the last 12 months, CEA has produced research on key industry topics such as the cloud, tablets, smartphones, portable electronics on aircraft, fitness technology and Ultra HDTVs. Energy Efficiency CEA’s Video Systems Committee has launched a working group focused on revising ANSI/CEA-2037, Determination of Television Average Power Consumption, the standard defining a method for measuring average power consumption of TV sets. In addition, one of three working groups within CEA’s Wireless Power Subcommittee focuses on establishing a common method for determining power transfer efficiency and standby power for CE devices that include wireless power transfer functionality. CEA has launched a new working group to investigate reducing audio/video device power. When a home theater has multiple devices, it is more efficient to know which one is providing the current music or video, and which ones are on or in sleep mode. This specification is expected to result in increased user convenience and energy efficiency in home A/V networks. Standards to Promote Accessibility In order to help the visually impaired orient themselves on devices like remote controls, CEA established a standards working group tasked with enhancing audio accessibility and compatibility with external listening equipment. Internet-specific Standards the technical requirements for IPv6-enabled connected devices and home routers. This specification will help members target the right features for IPv6 compatibility.
