Welcome to Waverly Equestrian Centre Welcome to Waverley, the hub of my hunting business for the last ten years and the birth place of many of the horses here. Our breeding programme has run very successfully over the last decade and now, when I have reached the stage where I would like to reduce my work commitments, I find we have too many wonderful horses to give all of them the attention they deserve. I hope today will allow me to find appreciative new owners for this special collection of family friends. In recent years the summers at Waverley have been busy hosting equestrian camps for foreign teenagers. This last summer has been – like the previous 4 or 5 – filled with excited youngsters (from 12 – 22) falling in love with the horses which take them over a plethora of cross-country fences and show-jumps both here at Waverley and at our XC training field. We have constructed obstacles specifically to teach our young horses and riders to cope with different terrains and to provide decent challenges for the fox-hunting clinics Aidan O’Connell holds here every autumn*. We also do Cavalry exercises with the students which demand much of the same skills as dressage, and we go on long hacks across the countryside. As a result, the horses are very versatile and many are experienced hunters already. All the horses that have played polo can also jump well, and having a polo-handy horse out hunting or eventing is definitely an extra bonus. Some of the fences I have designed are deliberately ‘trappy’ and demand careful attention in all weathers. Some are constructed to act as both drop fences and up-hill challenges, and some (the tall and the wide) are just straight-forward kick-on fences. They range from 2’ to 4’ and from skinny to broad. There is a bounce, a corner, a bank, combinations of all kinds, a sunken road, ditches for all levels and a river to wade along and make all the kids squeal! In the horse descriptions you will find mention of what the horses have accomplished during these past few months. Prior to this summer, many of the horses had not done as much as they should have according to their ages – this is my fault, not theirs. The advantage of their being behind in experience is that they are strong in heart, lungs and legs having been allowed to grow without early hardships. They are now ready to build upon their recent achievements. All potential buyers are welcome to come and ride the horses before the sale. With best wishes to all, from Diana Jack. * Aidan’s next clinic is scheduled for 23rd and 24th October. To book a place for you and your horse please ring me on 07778 333433. I take it every year – it helps correct my bad habits (at least until Christmas!) and keep me in the saddle more often than not. Hunting is a dangerous pastime, as we all know, and this clinic is an excellent survival tool which I really recommend. Auctioneers Introduction Kidson-Trigg Auctioneers are extremely proud and honoured to have been chosen to conduct the Waverley Equestrian Centre Dispersal Sale on behalf of Diana Jack. Diana started her hunter hireling business in 1984. Before the ban, visitors came from all over the world to experience fox-hunting from The Belvoir to The Beaufort, The Wynstay to Woodland Pytchley with clients from over 20 different countries. Originally designed for visitors from over-seas, it soon became apparent that there was also a domestic market for Diana’s horses and over the years they have travelled to more than fifty packs of hounds and built up a considerable reputation. She has never liked to refer to her horses as ‘hirelings’ as that word always makes people think of animals with hard mouths and a lack of personality. The horses at Waverley are not like that, most of them are home-bred and all are homemade. They are members of the family. The Polo was started in 1988 on the back of the hunting business to provide work for the staff and use of the facilities during the summer months, and is now run at Offcurch Bury by Diana’s Daughter Tessa Johnson and Grant Collett (www. offchurchburypoloclub.co.uk). Horses bred for polo here are very versatile as they also jump and go hunting. One of England’s top polo players used to field master with The Beaufort on his polo ponies because, he said, teaching them to jump put them back on their hocks and developed the muscles needed for the quick stops and turns of polo. This has proved to be the case at Waverley and the horses seem to enjoy the change of sport as much as the riders. Diana feels the time has come to “downsize” her business, and reduce her work commitments, while continuing to hunt and hire her ‘old faithfuls’ on a much reduced scale. This sale is a unique opportunity to benefit from the love and hard work which has been invested in the horses at Waverley. It is hoped that they will find new homes where they will be owned with the same degree of pride and affection as they deservedly have here. Kidson-Trigg Auctioneers Conditions of Sale 1. The highest bidder for a lot shall be the purchaser thereof, subject to the right of the Auctioneer by whom the sale is conducted to refuse to accept any bidding if he thinks proper to do so and also subject to every lot, to any reserved price that the Vendor may have put on the lot. If in the opinion of the Auctioneer any dispute shall arise to the last or best bidding for any lot, the lot in dispute shall be put up again at the last undis puted bidding. The Auctioneer will act as sole arbitrator in any dispute whose claim will be binding on all parties. 2. A person shall not retract a bid and only bidding of one or more pounds will be accepted. 3. Every lot will be sold and must be taken by the purchaser with all faults and errors of the description (if any) and from the fall of the hammer the lot shall remain the purchaser’s risk; but no lot shall be removed from the Sale Premises until it has been paid for nor without a receipt. 4. No set off, or any deduction against or from the purchase money of any lot will under any circumstances be recognised or allowed by the Auctioneers. 5. Excepting in any case that may come within terms of, and is mentioned in, the proviso in this conditon hereinafter contained, no warranty whatever will be given with, nor shall any warranty be implied with or in respect of any lot, nor shall any damages or compensation be payable to any purchaser in respect of any fault in any lot or any error of description (if any) of any lot. 6. If any purchaser shall fail to comply with these conditions, the Auctioneers shall be at liberty to re-sell the lot of lots bought by him or her by either public auction or private contract and the deficiency in price (if any) occasioned by such re-sale, together with all charges and expenses attending the same, and also charges and expenses attending the keeping and maintenance of the lot or lots until re-sale, shall be made good and paid by the defaulter at the present sale: but, if there be any surplus upon any such re-sale, the defaulter shall not be entitled thereto. 7. Legal title does not pass to the sucessful bidder untill payment has been cleared into the auctioneers account. THE LOTS: The Waverley Equestrian Centre Auction Sale Please note that all the made horses are good to box, clip and shoe and are not traffic shy in any way. They hack out alone or in company. The youngsters all have their feet trimmed regularly and have been well-handled and transported from stable-yard to grazing fields and back frequently. All have been wormed as good practice dictates. LOT 1: Harmonica 2004 Homebred (Chesapeake/Harmony) 6 year old thoroughbred cross bay mare, 15.3hh. Snaffle mouth with a wonderful jump. This little mare could go far in the eventing world. She hunted regularly last season and has shown herself to be both bold and athletic. During the summer she has done all the fences and ditches without hesitating and is careful and efficient over show-jumps. A pretty horse who could go all the way. LOT 2: Twizel born in 2003 Homebred (Lightening/Chesapeake) 7 year old, 16hh, thoroughbred, bay mare. Twizel is still learning her job but is going well. She needs experience, but seems eager to learn and has a lovely personality. Looking at her parentage, it is not surprising that she is very fast. She has been a favourite amongst the better riders this summer and has jumped all the cross-country fences and show-jumps with enthusiasm. She is very light in the mouth (happy-mouth snaffle), so needs a competent rider to keep her that way. LOT 3: Etonia born in 2004 Homebred (Juno/Chesapeake) 6 year old, 16.(1)hh, thoroughbred-cross, dark bay mare. Etonia is well mannered, snaffle-mouth, and eager to expand her experience across country. She can make a good shape and there is no reason she couldn’t learn dressage to match her jumping abilities. Her mother, Juno, was a superb hunter who gave many seasons of steady hunting without fault, Etonia could do the same and/or give someone an excellent eventing prospect. She has profited well from steady riding over the summer and jumped everything we have with steady competence and confidence. LOT 4: Chesapeake born in 2000. 10 years old this year, thoroughbred chestnut gelding, 16.1hh. Chesapeake rides and hunts in a snaffle and has a wonderfully calm personality. He is ideal for nervous riders who want to go hunting as he will take care of his rider and go where instructed, rather than charging along with everyone else. He is very fast when asked to gallop, but happy to canter along if that is the preferred gait. Chesapeake jumps nicely and is happy over obstacles up to 3’6” although will jump bigger things for the right rider. This summer he has jumped our 4’ palisade without hesitation and all fences and ditches have been taken in his stride. LOT 5: Katie born in 2001. 9 year old, thoroughbred, bay filly, 15hh. Due to having too many horses, Katie was behind in her education until this summer when she really bonded with several of the foreign students. She is an intelligent mare, willing to learn with a kind heart. She is now jumping very nicely, show-jumps, ditches and XC, and plays a decent game of Polo. She is very light in the mouth and rides in a rubber snaffle. LOT 6: Tickle 1999 11 year old, bright bay, thoroughbred mare, 15.1hh. Tickle injured a hock when a youngster and so is behind in her training. She had a foal during her recovery period. She is now going well and enjoying being in work. She is jumping nicely and playing polo. She went out with hounds several times last season with my daughter, Emily, and performed beautifully. She rides in a full-cheek, plain snaffle. LOT 7: Jeremiah 1999 11 this year, thoroughbred, bright chestnut gelding, 17.1hh. Jeremiah started his life on the track but was sold as he likes being at the front but not out ahead where a winner has to go. He is fast, but light in the mouth and easy to control. He spent a couple of months on Exmoor at the beginning of this season and went perfectly. He has a wonderful jump, but needs to be confident in his rider. Has hunted regularly with all The Shire packs and came 5th in The Harborough Ride in March this year. Lovely manners and an affectionate personality. Jeremiah rides out in a snaffle and hunts in a dutch gag (middle ring) with a snaffle rein. LOT 8: Mediba 2003 Homebred (Lupin/Chesapeake) 6 year old, thoroughbred, dark bay gelding, 15hh. Again, due to having too many horses, Mediba is behind in his work experience. He is a beautiful mover and has a lovely, kind, personality. He is now playing polo and jumping well over both show-jumps and cross-country fences. He is snaffle-mouthed and has been a great success this summer jumping everything in the cross-country field. LOT 9: Chisipiti 2003 Homebred (Birthday Girl/Chesapeake) 7 year old, thoroughbred-cross, light chestnut mare, 15.3hh. This little horse is a quarter cob and accordingly very versatile. She would make someone a wonderful friend in all disciplines. She can do a dressage test, is jumping very nicely and plays polo too. An easy personality she’s happy to have a go at whatever is asked of her and has jumped everything this summer both show-jumps and cross-country. She was hunting regularly last season and rides out in a snaffle but has a Dutch gag (with snaffle rein) when out with hounds. Lot 10: Match 1997 Homebred 13 year old, 15.2hh thoroughbred/cob cross. Chunky, athletic bay gelding with plenty of stamina. Match has hunted and team-chased reliably with all the Shire packs and never put a foot wrong. He is bold across country and careful over show-jumps and very popular with all who have taken him hunting . He hunts in a rubber American gag and, whenever we have a show-jumping competition at Waverley, the student riding Match always wins! LOT 11: Joey 2003 7 year old, 14.2hh bay gelding with a lovely temperament. Bred for polo Joey plays well, but is also now trained to jump both in the ring and across country and is doing really well. For a rider with light hands he is best in a gag with snaffle rein. He has jumped all the cross-country fences and went out with hounds regularly last season. LOT 12: Milford 2004 homebred (Marissa/Chesapeake). 6 year old, 15.3hh quality thoroughbred chestnut gelding. Lovely temperament, good-looking fine horse with his future in front of him. Behind in his education through no fault of his own, Milford is snaffle-mouthed, has been ridden and jumped and is ready to be brought on. LOT 13: Snip 1997 Attractive 13 year old 15.3hh chestnut mare with spots of white. Snip is a relatively new arrival at Waverley, she has little experience but is willing to please and eager to learn. She is confident over a show-jumping course of up to 2’9” and keen to learn more. She uses a plain snaffle bit. LOT 14: Nano 2001 9 year old 16hh bay gelding from impressive polo blood-lines (bred by Hugo Perodo). Nano is good to hack out, jumps willingly and plays polo. He rides in a Snaffle and has a friendly personality without vices. He has been very useful this summer, especially for the more nervous riders. LOT 15: Parsley 10 year old 15.3hh pretty bright bay mare. Parsley plays polo, goes hunting and is happy being loved and appreciated. A willing horse, eager to please, jumping nicely over substantial obstacles and performing well on the flat. She rides in a happy-mouth, full-cheek snaffle and has jumped every obstacle our cross-country field has to offer. LOT 16: Rochester 5 year old, 14.2hh chestnut gelding. Rochester has a lovely temperament and hunted well last season. He is bold over his fences, has lovely manners and is capable of excelling in any discipline. An amazingly versatile little horse. He rides in a snaffle and has jumped all our fences with enthusiasm – even those that seem as tall as he is! Lot 17: Tiggy (Shannon Arms) 9 year old, 16.1h bay gelding. Tiggy raced in USA before coming to England where he has been re-trained for polo with such success that he has summered at The Offchurch Bury Polo Club. He has played regularly in tournaments throughout the season– usually on the winning side! Youngsters: All well-handled and confident. LOT 18: Maxine 2007 14.3hh Homebred (Molly/Ali), half Arab chestnut filly. Has been lunged with tack and walked out along the road. Should grow at least another hand. LOT 19 Norwood 2007 14.2hh Homebred (Oreja/Ali) half Arab, half T’bred, blue roan colt. Has been backed and jumped over poles up to 3’ and still going! A laid-back little horse without a mean bone in his body. A great favourite with the summer visitors. Should make in excess of 15hh. LOT 20: Apollo 2007 14.3 Homebred T’bred (Jill/Mediba) bay gelding. Has been backed at the walk, trot and canter and negotiated trotting poles without a problem. Still has plenty of growing to do. LOT 21: Africa 2007 14.1 Homebred (Lupin/Joey), bay gelding, has been backed at the walk, trot and canter and ridden out. No vices, friendly personality, should make 15 hh.
