Scales and Gauges
I have always wanted a Garden Railway, but……..
Where should I start?
What Scale or Gauge should I use?
Should it be Standard or Narrow Gauge?
These are some of the questions we get asked all the time, to help with decisions and clear up some
confusions a summary of the various scales and gauges commonly used outdoors is given below.

The term ‘Prototype’ refers to the full sized railway, and the term ‘Gauge’ refers to the distance between
the rails. There are two basic groups; Standard which is 4ft 8½in, and Narrow which is anything less.
G Scale refers to the ratio of 1:22.5 (13.5mm/ft) now widely used to model both Standard Gauge
(63.5mm) and Narrow Gauge (45mm) Prototypes. Note that the ‘G Scale Standard Gauge’ is often
referred to as ‘Gauge3’ or ‘G64’ and ‘G Scale Narrow Gauge’ is often referred to as ‘G45’ or ‘LGB’.
However it is worth mentioning that within ‘G Scale’ there are more than one scale ratio in use. In fact
there are no less than 3 sub scales that will be commonly encountered apart from the technically
‘correct’ 1:22.5. The reason for this is a desire on the part of manufacturers to enable widely disparate
types of rolling stock from many different parts of the world to be able to run together and ‘look
correct’.
Therefore you may encounter models at scales of:
1:20.3
e.g. Accucraft, Bachmann Spectrum, American Narrow Gauge.
1:24
e.g. Accucraft.
1:29
e.g. USA Trains, Aristocraft, Accucraft, American Standard Gauge.

GWR CORRIDOR COACHES – Large window ’Sunshine’ types introduced in the 1930’s by C. B.
Collett. As they were 8’ 11” wide ‘Yellow Disc’ they could work widely across the country and lasted well
into the B.R. period.
GRS will be introducing three types initially; Third Class Corridor
Brake Composite Corridor

DIAG C77 1938, 1940. 60’ 11 ¼”
DIAG E159 1938, 1941. 60’ 11 ¼”
DIAG E158 1938, 1940. 59’ 10”
Great care has been taken with design and manufacture of these coaches, with particular reference to the
ease of building, the painting and operation of a rake of the coaches.
To this end we will be offering the coaches in kit form, but also as sub assembled parts, possibly even ‘Ready
to Run’ The coaches will be produced in small batches and availability at any one time will therefore be
limited. Customers wishing to buy a rake of these coaches will need to order all of them in advance to
guarantee their requirements can be met.
