Where should I start? What Scale or Gauge should I use? Should it be Standard or Narrow Gauge? These are some of the questions we get asked all the time, to help with decisions and clear up some confusions a summary of the various scales and gauges commonly used outdoors is given below. Model Railway Scale Prototype Model Gauge Gauge Rail Comment Code* Availability The smallest of the larger scales and Gauge 0 7mm/ft 4ft 8½in 1:43 Standard 32mm 100-125 probably the smallest for garden use. There are two basic groups; Standard which is 4ft 8½in, and Narrow which is anything less. G Scale refers to the ratio of 1:22.5 (13.5mm/ft) now widely used to model both Standard Gauge (63.5mm) and Narrow Gauge (45mm) Prototypes. Note that the ‘G Scale Standard Gauge’ is often referred to as ‘Gauge3’ or ‘G64’ and ‘G Scale Narrow Gauge’ is often referred to as ‘G45’ or ‘LGB’. However it is worth mentioning that within ‘G Scale’ there are more than one scale ratio in use. In fact there are no less than 3 sub scales that will be commonly encountered apart from the technically ‘correct’ 1:22.5. The reason for this is a desire on the part of manufacturers to enable widely disparate types of rolling stock from many different parts of the world to be able to run together and ‘look correct’. Therefore you may encounter models at scales of: 1:20.3 e.g. Accucraft, Bachmann Spectrum, American Narrow Gauge. 1:24 e.g. Accucraft. 1:29 e.g. USA Trains, Aristocraft, Accucraft, American Standard Gauge. 10% off all brands (offer excludes Roundhouse and Accucraft items) 20% off secondhand sales totalling over £500 10% off secondhand sales of less than £500 (offer excludes commission sale items) from the 1st until the 31st on all shop purchases and phone orders.
