To Deworm or Not To Deworm?

arasites, both internal and external, have been around
as long as man and beast. But are they all bad? There is
current evidence that some parasitic load is beneficial for
developing the immune system, decreasing the incidence of
allergies, and balancing the gut flora. However, too many parasites can lead to colic, anemia (lack of blood), weight loss, and
damage to various organs. Age, overall health, risk to exposure, and geographical location all need to be considered when
developing a deworming schedule.
Requesting your veterinarian to run fecals and fecal egg
counts can help determine the frequency of deworming for your
specific horse or herd. Realize that all dewormers have a very
low risk of potential side effects, including diarrhea which can
be offset by administering pre- and pro-biotics.
The “natural” dewormers are helpful for controlling parasite
load, but they are not effective enough to be used alone. Some
“chemical” dewormers are necessary for a deworming program
to be effective. In order for any of them to work, the proper dose
needs to be given.
There is a wide safety margin in the available paste
dewormers. Giving a little more than the label says is better
than giving the exact amount for your horse’s weight and then
watching the horse spit a glob of dewormer out on the floor. In
my case, it usually lands on my shirt.
Making sure the horse’s mouth is empty before administering the dewormer is very helpful in preventing the glob loss.
And yes, rotating dewormers is still recommended to cover different parasites and help prevent resistance to specific families
of dewormers. Also, giving a Panacur Power Pac (double the
regular dose given daily for 5 days in a row) should be considered every 2-3 years, or more if needed, to remove encysted
small strongyles that the other dewormers left behind. So to all
you parasites, go forth and don’t multiply!

The Amateurs in My Life
A
By Kendall Fately, 16
NJHSA Show Ring Editor
s the summer show season starts to kick in, I become
more and more excited to spend time with my barn
friends of all ages at Hunters Crossing. We are home
to a number of amateurs, including a good friend, now in college, competing in the younger adult hunters, and several
who compete in the older adult hunters.
Getting ready for shows in the summer is always an
interesting experience; the barn smells fruity due to all the
smell-good products like shampoo and coat conditioner that
the adults invest in. During the summer, everyone makes
more of an effort to come to the barn and ride. Because the
adults have such busy schedules, early morning lessons are
very popular, with early evening coming in a close second.
Honestly, I’m not sure where they find the time to come,
between work and family obligations, but it shows how much
they truly love the sport. If, on the off chance someone can’t
make it up to ride, many times the adult amateurs will call
and ask if either I or another junior can ride their horses for
them. Personally, I love those days because I get more time
in the saddle, and I am helping out a friend.
The amateurs at my barn are some of my favorite people; we talk about anything and everything, from boys to
school, work to horses, random weekend plans to restaurants. It hasn’t quite hit me that I’m going to be an “adult”
in two years (Never have I been more thankful for my March
birthday!). I love the adults at my farm. Befriending them
has been rewarding. I’ve been fortunate enough to have
learned from them and along the way, have formed some
life-long relationships with lovely people. Ω

Making a Difference
On Horseback
A long-awaited vacation is approaching. On the one hand, you would like to take a scenic riding
trip through an exotic land that you’ve always yearned to see. On the other hand, you would really
love to give something back, perhaps build a house for Habitat for Humanity or go to New Orleans to
help rebuild America’s most enigmatic city.
Relax, there’s no need to make a choice. Now you can do both with a company that combines exotic
travel on horseback with humanitarian missions. Relief Riders International offers trips that provide
food for the soul and light for the heart.

The Dental, Nutrition and Pediatric Programs
In the United States there is approximately one dentist for
every 1500 people. In India those odds increase dramatically
to one in 90,000. Three-quarters of those dentists are located
in urban areas, leaving rural populations desperately underserved. Living daily with a toothache is a common experience
for many people in India.
When Relief Riders arrive at a village, they set up a dental
camp. While the dental team performs procedures, the Relief
Riders work out of the camp dispensing toothpaste, toothbrushes, and education on dental hygiene.
Marc Lecureuil

elief Riders International, in conjunction with the Red
Cross, delivers on horseback medical and school supplies, goats, medical care, dental care and cataract
surgeries to rural communities in Rajasthan, India. The way
they deliver these goods and services not only makes it
unique, but also provides villagers with another dimension:
entertainment. Mounted on indigenous Marwari horses (that
were once considered divine and superior to all men) fitted in
colorful, traditional tack, they create an entrance sure to
capture everyone’s attention. (A four-wheel drive truck does
come along to serve as “pack animal.”)
At the Relief Riders camp, children and adults are given medical and dental care as well as education in dental hygiene.

Goat’s milk, according to the Journal of American
Medicine, “is the most complete food known.” In India, 48 percent of children under five suffer from malnutrition. Owning
a goat can go a long way towards providing adequate nutrition for a family––and goats are easy to care for. Through the
“Give a Goat” program, Relief Riders International has gifted
goats to nearly 400 families.
The pediatric program, always a highlight of the rides,
takes the staff to rural schools where they have the opportunity to meet and treat thousands of students. Riders are
uplifted by the warm and heartfelt welcome from the children, inspired by their curiosity, and moved by the experience.
At one village, an infant only a few months old was
brought in with a life-threatening laceration and infection.
The baby was treated and the parents were given antibiotics
to continue treatment. The baby would have died if not for
the Relief Riders’ program. It is precisely this kind of incident
that makes the rides so transformative for participants.
Some people express finding their careers revitalized, others
have found deeper levels in their personal relationships, and there are
those for whom the experience served
to kick start a life changing dream
project. Almost all of them have been
inspired to continue to help others.
looked at him and said, “That’s great. Why don’t you call me
when you wake up?”
It didn’t stop Alexander who knew intuitively that he
would hit his mark. Since then, Alexander and Relief Riders
International have completed 12 rides, with another scheduled for June of this year.
Scenic Splendor on Horseback
Although making such an impact is more than enough
reward in its own right, the trips provide breathtaking
scenery unlike anything else one can experience on earth.
Days are spent riding the stunning Marwari horses through
cinematic desert landscapes; overnights take place in ancient
forts and beautiful camps. The vibrant terrain of southern
Rajasthan offers a wealth of varied experiences from sleeping
in a serene desert oasis to joining villagers in a jubilant
celebration of Holi (the festival of colors), to riding through a
moonscape terrain by moonlight. During the day indigenous
wildlife such as black buck, desert foxes and Blue Bulls are
spotted.

Bhanu Pratap Singh Rathore
As a child, Alexander Scouri, Relief
Riders International founder, attended
a British military school in the
foothills of the Himalayas. He tried
many different activities at the school
including playing the piano, but the
only thing that stuck with him was
horseback riding. Alexander was a
young boy separated by thousands of
miles from his mother and his home
in New York City. He found solace and
peace in riding the native Marwari
horses.
His life took many twists and
turns, traveling the world, working in
theatre and in special effects in
movies. But when his father and four
close friends died in a two-month period, Alexander felt a need to realign his
sense of direction and sense of self. He
realized that there was more to life
than what he was living. He wanted
to give back, to provide an opportunity
to help other people. The idea he came
up with was simple but elegant: ride
across a beautiful country while helping others.
At the time, in 2003, the concept of
“voluntourism” was unheard of. Yet
that was precisely what came to
Alexander’s mind. Alexander, whose
father was Indian, returned to India
to research and develop his idea in
November 2003. When he returned, he
told a friend, “Hey, I’m working on
this project—I’m going to ride horses
through the desert and help people
who need help. Poor people. Bring
them medicine and food.” The friend

Relief Riders....continued
The Horses
A new itinerary winds itself around the stunning Aravelli
mountain range, taking riders from the lakeside Sardar
Samand fort to Kumbalgarh. This 3300 foot mountain range
offers unparalleled vistas of the Thar Desert. Kumbalgarh
boasts the world’s second longest wall (22 miles), built in the
15th century to protect its people.
The Experience
Alumni rider Andrew Mersmann describes his experience
of the relief ride as “a breakthrough that just picks you up
and puts you down somewhere exponentially further along
the road than you expected to get.” Inspired by his experience, Andrew returned home with a new perspective and
within 12 months manifested a beautiful and purposeful book
project, Frommer’s 500 Places Where You Can Make a
Difference.
Alexander finds the experience appeals to a wide variety of
travelers, describing them as “a group of wildly interesting
people with a common purpose.” He has had people who
hadn’t ridden in 25 years participate. The ride reignited a
long dormant passion, coupling it with a chance to give back,
and to positively impact the communities visited.
Alexander keeps the rides and the company small so that
he can remain personally connected to them. There are no
plans for mass expansion. Despite the limited number of
rides, to date close to 20,000 people have been treated by
Relief Riders International.
The horses used on the ride are compact desert horses
bred for endurance and extremely sure-footed. They are very
fluid and smooth with a fifth gait like a Tennessee Walker
called the revaal. Riding this unique breed is another aspect
that makes a trip with Relief Riders International so special.
Relief Riders International may seem like a small organization with a limited number of rides, but its impact has been
so dramatic that it was the recipient of the 2010 United
Nations NGO Positive Peace Award in the small business
category. The award honors organizations positively impacting
their communities through corporate responsibility.
Looking Ahead
This year will mark Relief Riders International’s expansion into Turkey where the company is working closely with
local officials and citizens in the Cappadocia region to provide
free dental camps and build children’s playgrounds in towns
that need them. Located in the middle of Turkey, Cappadocia
(a UNESCO World Heritage Site), is known for its fine horses
and natural wonders. The high plateau of Anatolia with its
colorful river valleys, dramatic ravines, and volcanic peaks
will serve as the backdrop to the Turkish journey which will
take place this year June 17th-30th. A brilliant vision has
grown into a source of hope for thousands of people, and a
chance for the experience of a lifetime for hundreds more.

A Special Thank You to Our Mom
Karen Lazeration-Wagner
Dear Mom,
Thank you for supporting me with my sport and in everything I do. Thank you for being there for me all the time
when I need help with something. Because you did not ride
before I started, it is fun learning everything equestrian
together. That makes it really special. I know some parents
just drop their kids off at the barn and leave, and I appreciate that you always stay and are there for me.

Simone Cox and Barbara Phillips
t was less than two
years ago when
amateur jumper
riders Simone Coxe and
Barbara Phillips were
having coffee together
and griping about entry
forms. They had been
doing their own entries
for years and were sick of
all the repetition, endless
handwriting and the
holdup when mistakes
were made. Then and
there the two equestrians
decided that instead of
just wishing there was an
easier way to enter horse
shows, they would take
the bull by the horns and
create one themselves.

Make Horse Show Entries Easy with Equestrian Connect
Friends and business partners, Barbara Phillips and Simone Coxe, at a recent horse show.
And so evolved Equestrian Connect, a web service that
allows exhibitors to complete their entry forms online. After
registering with EquestrianConnect.com and initially entering horse, rider and membership numbers, all information is
saved and automatically reproduced on a new entry form
when the exhibitor selects the next show. The completed
legible and accurate form can then be printed out, signed and
mailed to the horse show office with payment. Each participating horse show provides its official entry form.
Because of its ease of use, the service has caught on
quickly. Originally started in California, the service spread
like wildfire and there are currently over 450 horse shows
that have come on board including many major East Coast
shows such as HITS, the Hampton Classic and St.
Christopher’s. There are currently over 4000 individual users
with approximately 400 of them being trainers.
To demonstrate how easy the system is to use, Equestrian
Connect is offered free for an introductory 90 day period.
After that, exhibitors may sign up on an annual subscription
of $39.99 per horse, for unlimited entries. Or, for horses that
go to four shows or less, there is an $8 fee per entry form.
Equestrian Connect works with horse show managers who
want to encourage exhibitors to use the service. There is no
fee for horse shows to come on board although they often put
the Equestrian Connect link on their individual websites.
Equestrian Connect then includes their website link in their
email alerts which are sent regularly to subscribers. It is a
win-win situation for both exhibitor and horse show.
48
Kudos
It is no wonder that exhibitors and horse show management are raving about the service.
Olympic Team Gold and Silver Medalist Leslie Burr
Howard from Westport, Connecticut, commented, “It’s time
for the horse show industry to realize more of the benefits of
technology. This is a positive beginning.”
If exhibitors love the system, then one could say that horse
show secretaries go even a step further to total adoration. "I
love it when entries come in that were prepared through the
Equestrian Connect website,” said Troy Powell, head secretary of The Hampton Classic. “They're always legible, accurate, and complete, which, unfortunately, can't always be said
for entries scribbled in a hurry!"
The staff at HITS concurs. As Jessica Keil, horse show
secretary for HITS said, "The highlight of inputting entries
into our horse show program is when we come across an
Equestrian Connect entry. It saves us an immense amount of
time since they are easily readable and complete. Most
entries usually require deciphering poor handwriting which
leads to misspelled names and addresses in our database.
Those mistakes also come back to haunt the person who filled
the entry out when their horse's name is mispronounced in
the ring, or their prize money is returned to us because we
were unable to read the address on the entry blank."
Amanda J. Lambert, another HITS secretary, agreed. "It's
always a pleasure to receive Equestrian Connect entries
because they are so neat and legible! Our data input is much

quicker and with less mistakes when we aren't trying to
figure out someone's handwriting.“
The Founders
Simone Coxe and Barbara Phillips met about ten years ago
when they took lessons at the same farm. Although they both
have moved from that facility to different farms and trainers,
their friendship on and off the showgrounds has remained
intact. Their frustration with entry forms, coupled with
Barbara’s background in computer science and Simone’s in
public relations, created the perfect partnership for their
brainchild, Equestrian Connect.
Barbara Phillips
With a background in computer science and business,
Barbara knew that the internet would provide the perfect
solution for doing entries quickly and easily, although, “I
never imagined it would take off so quickly!” she said.
At the helm of three other start-up companies where she
provided the product development, vision, and computer
strategy, she was able to face the challenge of horse show
entries not only with her wealth of expertise but with the
mindset of the typical horse show competitor.
Barbara and hubby Stuart have two children in college;
Carolyn competes on the east coast and Kevin cycles.
Barbara says, “Stu is a big fan. We have young horses at
home and he has been seen feeding them carrots. He is a
Silicon Valley venture capitalist and with that background he
looks for companies that meet a real market need and fulfills
customer requests. Equestrian Connect proved those two
tests.”
Barbara competes in the Amateur and Open Jumper
divisions 1.30 meter on her horses, Alberta, Ramira and
Charisma. Her most recent accomplishment was winning the
HITS Thermal Circuit Championship in Low Amateur
Jumpers and the show championship in Level 4.
Her 2011 goal is to move up to the High Amateurs at 1.40
meter.
Barbara trains with Butch, Lu and Guy Thomas at Willow
Tree Farms in Woodside, California.
Simone Otus Coxe
Looking Ahead
Eventually, Simone and Barbara want to expand
Equestrian Connect to list show results, track points and
even put together show reports of riders and horses. They are
also considering adding videos and photos and developing the
site into a venue of entertainment for horse lovers.
Although they’ve received interest from riders competing
in other disciplines, right now they plan to stay focused on
the hunter/jumper market.
Equestrian Connect is currently focused on USEF A/AA
and Jumper-rated shows for now, although that may change
as the company expands to include B-rated and local shows.
Meanwhile, the two women are enjoying the early success
of their venture and find it gratifying when they hear compliments like, “Equestrian Connect is like Christmas––it’s almost
fun doing entries now!”

Flying Horse Photography
From 1985-2002 Simone juggled a career in her own public
relations firm in the technology field with marriage, mother-
hood and horses. When she sold her company in 2002 to have
a third child, she thought her corporate days were over and
she would finally be able to devote herself entirely to her
growing family and her riding. Her children are now 13, 12
and 8 and the youngest, Isabel, will begin showing in short
stirrup this season.
Simone started riding as an adult and she alternates
between the Modified Am/Jr Jumpers, and the Low A/O
Jumpers (1.20-1.30). Her mounts are Cardano and Dondero
and she recently retired a 19-year old horse named Fortuna.
Always a realist, her goals for this season are to “fix some bad
habits and get back to consistently riding in the A/O
Jumpers. I eventually want to ride in the high A/O's.”
She also owns a Grand Prix horse, Mr. Whoopy, shown by
her trainer Duncan McFarlane of Outwoods Farm where
Simone is also trained by Helen McNaught. She is excited
about Mr. Whoopy’s 8th place finish in the HITS $1 Million
Grand Prix last year at only 8 years of age. He recently won
the Grand Prix at the Capitol City Classic in Sacramento,
California in April.
Simone’s husband, Tench, is very supportive of the business and the horses, “although he sometimes wonders how all
this horse stuff happened to him!” she laughed. “He is in the
venture capital business, and knows what it takes to start a
business. My kids think it is cool, but that I work too much.”

would have happened without her."
Now an older amateur, Linda is thrilled to be back at
the horse shows and she especially loves the jumper
division. It’s no wonder, as speed is something she
embraced during her college years. While looking for a
part-time job as a student, a friend suggested she try the
race track, which she did. Because of her small stature, it
wasn’t long before she was galloping racehorses...and
eventually even rode races herself. Although, she said, she
did not race many times, she did have a high win percentage. “It is a great way to kill yourself,” she laughed,
adding, “By the time you become good enough to do it, it
becomes less scary. It is quite exhilarating to be in the
middle of 12 horses moving along at a pretty good clip.”
52
It was at the track where Linda met her husband,
Pat, a trainer who was looking for an exercise rider.
Linda filled the bill and her whole life changed
After graduating from Parsons School of Design,
Linda’s career took flight on Wall Street where she
worked for over 15 years. Four years ago she decided to
leave Wall Street and concentrate on a business that
would utilize her talent in art and her love of horses.
She started www.EquestrianEarth.com, a service that
custom designs logos for farms, trainers, horses and
riders. Linda is also a fine artist who immortalizes
beloved equines in oil paintings. Samples of her exquisite work can be seen on her website.
Over the years, she and hubby, Pat, have come
across many horses that did not make it on the track,
but went on to new careers as show horses. She loves
Thoroughbreds, but none, she says, is more special than
Less Is More. The 10-year-old bay stands at a mere 15.2
but, she added, “He's only small on the outside; inside
he's a giant. He is a game horse, always up for a competition and great fun to ride.” The couple has owned the
horse since he was two years old when he was purchased as a racing prospect. “He loved to race,” Linda
said, “but was not fast enough for the track. When in
the show ring, however, he is hard to beat.”
Linda’s win at Garden State in May was followed by
an equally successful 2010 where the pair brought home
the HITS Circuit Championship from Saugarties in the
Amateur Jumpers. At 52 years of age, Linda says,
“When I do win, it is sometimes against riders so young
that I am old enough to be their mother!”
Her goals for this season are to continue showing in
the NAL/M&S/WIHS classes and qualify for the adult
jumper finals at all three. Ω

eghan Orr and Four’s A Charm wrapped up last
year with the Adult Amateur Jumper title for
Zone 2. Meghan, who rides with Kacey Rovere of
Greystone Farm in Shamong, New Jersey, is a nursing
student at The College of New Jersey, and will graduate
this year.
Meghan began riding when her mother won a free lesson at a Chinese auction. Her mother let Meghan take the
lesson instead. That was all it took; after that, there was
no stopping Meghan. It’s now 15 years later and Meghan
says, “I’m sure she regrets that decision.”
Meghan has had Four’s A Charm (“Jinx”) for nine
years. When she went to try the now 13 year-old
Thoroughbred, he was in training as a hunter. “I don’t
know who had that crazy idea!” Meghan says. “When I
tried him, I jumped a line and I was going to go around a
fence at the end of the ring. Instead he cut in and jumped
it. I thought, ‘Well he can definitely do the jumpers.’” Jinx
is quick, and likes to do very tight turns. “You just have to
hang on a bit,” states Meghan. “He’ll jump from underneath, sideways, long distances. He’ll jump from anywhere.”
Jinx is not only a great show horse; he’s also a lot of
fun around the barn. He’s got a good sense of humor, and
likes to beg for treats by lifting his front foot up in the air.
One of Meghan’s goals had always been to go to
Devon, and last year she and Jinx qualified. It didn’t go as
well as she’d hoped. Under the pressure of competing at
Devon, Meghan “had a bit of a meltdown. But the second
day was better than the first.” This year Meghan and Jinx
are again qualified and Meghan’s goal is to come home
with a ribbon, preferably blue.
Meghan is proud of Jinx and of how far they’ve come.
“When I got him he was crazy; he ran away with me all
the time. I would trot half my courses and get 25 time

faults. But now he just packs me around.”
For Meghan, “Riding just makes life so much better. I
don’t know what I would do without it.” When some of her
classmates in school mentioned that they would be bored
after they graduated, that they wouldn’t have anything to
do, Meghan thought, “I never get bored! There’s always
something to do when you have horses.”
Meghan loves Jinx and loves competing and is thrilled
with where she and her horse are now. “I’m doing what I
always wanted to do.” Ω

iranda Scarpone and Rosso Rossini haven’t been
together too long, but they definitely have made
their presence known. Miranda and Rosso started
their partnership in August, 2010, and qualified for all of
their finals: Marshall and Sterling, Zone 2 Hunter Finals,
and the Ariat Finals at the Capital Challenge. They were
Marshall and Sterling Adult Hunter Champions at the
finals, as well as Grand Champion at Zone 2 Finals.
Rosso is a horse Miranda never thought she could
own. She rode the Bavarian warmblood for about a month
for owner Donna Johnson. They went to HITS where
Miranda “totally clicked with him, like I’d never clicked
with a horse before.” When her grandmother saw how well
they did, and how happy Miranda was when she was
riding him, she bought the horse for her granddaughter.
Miranda knows she’s very lucky to have such an amazing
grandmother!
At the finals, which Rosso had never competed in
before, the horse “never put a foot wrong. He was so good
for me. He did it like he’d done it a million times; he was
amazing.” Rosso is a real people horse. “He’s like a puppy
dog; he would love to curl up in your lap. He’s always
happy.”
Miranda trains with Robert Beck at Hunter’s Crossing
in Long Valley, NJ and says, “Robert has been one of the
most influential people in my life. He’s so supportive of me
and believes in me; I don’t know where I’d be without
him.”
She also credits her other horse, Bella, who “got me
where I am today, and really taught me how to ride.”
She began riding at four when her mother took her to
a western/trail barn. Her mother had loved riding as a kid
and wanted to give Miranda the same opportunity.
Miranda stopped for a while but took it up again when a
friend began riding. At first she told her family that she

would ride but not do horse shows. A month later, she
was in a show!
Miranda attends Centenary College and is interested in becoming an equine appraiser, working for an
insurance company. Miranda set a big goal and made it
happen, losing 60 pounds in order to be a better rider.
Her goal is to “keep getting better. I never want to settle for where I am. There’s always room for improvement.” Miranda particularly wants to get better at the
adult medals. She says she is “most proud of getting to
a more comfortable level with my riding. I’ve lost the
sense of doubt I had in my riding. I never thought I
would get to that point. Now I can ride and trust
myself.”
That comfort and trust in herself has paid off in a
big way. Just recently at the Garden State Horse Show,
Miranda was champion in the Adult Amateur Hunters
18-35, won the Marshall and Sterling Adult Medal and
Adult Flat class, and placed third in the Ariat Adult
Medal.
For Miranda, “Riding gives me something to strive
for. It’s the only thing I set goals for; it gives me direction and focus. And it’s taught me a lot about responsibility. I think of my horses first before anything else.” Ω

erry Chasin finished off the
2010 show season as champion of the LIHSAA Adult
Hunters 35+ with Clover, a 9-yearold warmblood that he says is “fantastic. If it weren’t for him I wouldn’t
be winning ribbons.” And ribbons he
has won––from local shows all the
way to a blue at the Zone 2 Finals.
For the last six years the training of this pair has been under the
watchful eye of Gerry’s daughter,
Brooke Chasin, who works with her
dad at his North Shore Equestrian
Center in Old Brookville on Long Island.
Gerry’s involvement with NSEC goes back four decades
when he was a boarder at the facility, taking lessons, doing
some showing, and riding in the Smithtown Hunt. When
the facility came up for lease 40 years ago, Gerry snapped
at the chance to lease it. He has been there since and has
taken his family along for the ride, with wife Gayle running the day-to-day operations.
Gerry and Gayle have four children: Matt, Farin,
Brooke and Noah. Although all the children rode, it was
Matt, Brooke and Noah who found the same passion for
horses as their dad. Matt and Brooke went all the way as
juniors, qualifying for the big equitation while Noah concentrated on the jumpers. After graduating college, Matt
chose the business world while Brooke immersed herself in
the horse world as a professional, finding a perfect niche at
North Shore Equestrian Center. Noah works at UBS and
teaches, trains and rides at North Shore.
“It’s great having Brooke as my trainer,” said this
proud father. “Over the years, I’ve trained with some of the
best: Robert Hoskins, Hugh Cassidy, George Morris, Frank
Madden, Lisa Rex, Eddie Horowitz, Laura Hagen. And now
my daughter is my trainer. It’s wonderful to see how
Brooke has built herself up into a person who is not only a
Today’s Equestrian June 2011
talented trainer, but everyone loves her. I am glad Noah is
also getting involved as riding is also his passion.”
The admiration is certainly a two-way street with
Brooke saying, “My father is a great student; he really
tries hard and loves the horses. It’s also nice to see this
other side of him that is separate from that of my father.”
Gerry loves Long Island and feels that it is a wonderful
place for kids to live and be part of the horse scene. “I have
seen almost every Long Island trainer grow up from their
pony days. It is a great vocation and a great environment.”
He further has much praise for the local organizations
such as the LIHSAA (Long Island High Score Awards
Association) and the LIPHA (Long Island Professional
Horsemen’s Association). “I think everyone should get
involved as they are good for our sport.”
As an older amateur rider, he commented that he would
like to see an over-50 section added to
the current adult hunter division.
“Since I am over 60, it is difficult to
compete against 40 year-olds! They
offer an over-50 section in Florida and
HITS and I think that is very fair.”
....Throughout the years, Gerry has
built NSEC into one of the finest facilities on Long Island where complete
training and horse boarding are
offered as well as several USEF-rated
shows every year. The facility is home
to 150 horses and offers lessons for all
levels. “We have trainers who have
been with us for 15-20 years,” he said,
“Our office manager has been with us
for 30 years. It is a great place to ride
and work.”
North Shore Equestrian Center is
located on the CW Post College
campus, the only college on Long
island that boasts its own equestrian
center for its riding team. Gerry is delighted that CW Post
may be adding an NCAA varsity team which would allow
scholarships to be awarded to riders.
The farm also serves as a maternity ward for new offspring every year. At press time two foals were just born
and one is expected. One of the farm’s broodmares is
Scooter, Gerry’s previous show horse that is now retired on
the farm and has had four babies so far.
Another baby expected this year is his sixth grandchild! The proud grandparents of five boys, Gerry and
Gayle are excited about the future arrival of their first
granddaughter, being born to daughter Farin who is a DA
in Brooklyn.
Gerry and Gayle live in Mill Neck, just a short drive to
the investment business firm office where he runs the TaftHartley Consulting Group for UBS. Every morning before
work, if possible, Gerry goes to the barn to ride and to
fortify himself for his long, busy day. “Horses keep me
healthy and young,” he said. “I love it.” Ω

Bob Rose
“Riding Is My Passion”
By Ann Jamieson
Richard Killian
B
ob Rose of Westport, Connecticut, and
Tanner are well-loved fixtures on the
Connecticut/New York horse show scene.
Bob competes in the Modified Adult Hunters and
Modified Adult Equitation divisions, riding with
Juliana and Amanda Starbuck of Starbuck
Equestrian, Tanner’s owners.
Although Bob loves his job as an Executive
Vice President at Thomson Reuters, it is very
demanding of his energy and time and he
typically gets up between 2 and 3 a.m. to get
some work done before leaving for his job. He
has never missed the 4:45 a.m. train to NYC. Or a
workout. Bob faithfully keeps an appointment with a
Stairmaster every workday. Riding, says Bob, “is purely
cathartic for me.”
Bob began riding as a child in the midwest, and continued until he became a parent himself. When his kids
were grown and he found himself between jobs, he
looked around for a place to take up the sport again.
Starbuck Equestrian in Ridgefield came highly recommended, and Bob couldn’t be happier with his choice.
“I feel right at home there. There is a real positive
approach to teaching, and all the parents and other
riders are great.”
There are times, however, when Tanner is not quite
as easy to get along with as the people who frequent
Starbuck Equestrian. “Although I think Tanner is wonderful and he has expressed similar feelings toward me,
I am quite sure that his opinion is greatly influenced by
the pocketful of carrots that I never forget to bring with
56
me for my lessons and most especially when I
travel to away shows. As long as I bribe him, we
get along fine.”
Bob said that Tanner has really taught him to
ride. “If I cut a corner to a line, he’ll stop at the
jump. I absolutely cannot be a passenger.” As Bob
likes to say, he has been “de-horsed” many times,
but it never stops him from getting right back on.
According to hearsay, there’s even a “Bob Fan
Club” at Starbucks.
Bob’s long days make it hard to find time to ride
more than a couple
of times a week,
although he wishes he could. “I live
with a handful of
beepers in my
pocket. Getting to
Starbucks to ride
is so relaxing. Cell
service is bad
there, so that’s
good. Riding is
something I really
look forward to. I
just love it.”
Besides the
sheer joy of riding,
there are other
beneficial aspects
of the sport, says Bob. “It teaches us responsibility,
and builds balance and confidence.”
Recently Bob was in Washington DC on business
and had intended to stay through the weekend to
attend a black-tie dinner on Saturday night.
However, a text from Amanda changed all that. She
wanted to know if he would like to go to a show at
Vail Farm on Saturday. He did. He returned to
Connecticut, rode in four classes, and caught the
12:30 shuttle back to Washington in time to make
the dinner.
Last year was a great one for Bob. He and Tanner
took a third place in the FWPHA standings in the
Modified Adult Hunters, and a sixth in the Low
Hunters. Just recently he and Tanner were champions at Folly Farm. But, much as he appreciated the
blues and the championship, Bob says, “It doesn’t
make a difference. I love to ride. Riding is truly a
passion with me.” Ω

Born to Ride!
Bryan Nigro
By Ann Jamieson
P
aula Foohey didn’t have an option when it came
to riding. She was born into it. Her parents, Paul
and Marie Foohey, own The Pines Farm in
Glastonbury, Connecticut. In the delivery room after
Paula was born, Paul announced to Marie, “I got a
pony for her.” The pony, Nite Lite, is still around, now
at Sweetwater Farm.
She shows Wentworth in the Amateur Owners
Hunters where they currently stand first for the CHJA
and for Zone 1. Paula got Wentworth when he was six;
he had never done anything and was just living in a
field. She’s since done every division with him: hunters,
jumpers and equitation.
In addition to the Amateur Owners, Paula shows in
the Adult Medals, and is working to make Wentworth
more competitive in those classes and more consistent
in the hunters. “He’s got an excessive amount of
energy,” she states. She also has a nice 3-year-old that
her Dad is riding that she hopes to bring along in the
hunters.
Paula grew up riding with her Dad, but is now
working with Kristin Newton and Cindy Ferguson.
Today’s Equestrian June 2011
She’s been very happy with what they’ve accomplished
with her, helping her to refine her riding.
Paula went through an extraordinarily trying year
in 2010, losing her main horse, I Spy, and surviving a
terrifying automobile accident. She waited a long time
before riding again, but is happy to be back in the
saddle and doing well.
Her horses, says Paula, are her “stress relief.” Her
new thing is “trail riding. All my horses love it. It’s
what I do to get away.” There is plenty of open space
around The Pines for Paula to get out and get away
from it all.
A recent graduate of The University of Rhode
Island, Paula majored in communications and competed on the intercollegiate riding team. Currently she
works for Apple Rehab, but is thinking of attending law
school and definitely intends to remain an amateur.
Paula is proud of taking Wentworth from totally
green and inexperienced to where he is now and plans
to keep working to get to the point where they can do
even better in the hunters, and place in all the adult
medal finals. Ω

For Father’s Day Today’s Equestrian once again honors all those Horse Show Dads out there
who make riding horses possible for their children. We asked some riders the all-important

matter what we do. He is always willing to help out. He has
come to the shows to watch us ride since we were little
kids; he is great that way. He is always calm and supportive, like the perfect father figure.”
Megan says: “My dad is always there for us, no matter
what. Even if we don’t do well, he always tells us we did a
good job. He wants us to ride and have a great time and it
doesn’t matter to him what the outcome is. As long as we
enjoy ourselves, he is happy.” Y
“M
y father is a very special person in my life. He has
been there for me in my riding every step of the way
although he is not a horse person and has not always
understood my passion for horses. However, his unwavering
love, support and dedication to me has made all of my
equestrian pursuits possible, and for that, I can never thank
him enough.
“My dad is truly a special man. Thank you, Dad!” Y

“O
here are many things I admire about my father, but
what stands out most to me is his dedication. I don’t
know anyone else who works harder than he does, or with
more devotion to creating a finished product worth being
proud of.
“Between keeping the barn afloat in the office, maintaining the property, or helping prepare for shows, he is an
absolutely indispensable member of the Red Oak Farm
team.
“Everything
I have been
able to do
while growing
up is a result
of his dedication to and
love for his
family. Despite
working long
hours, changing professions to the
equestrian
industry (no
easy feat) and
Libby at 4 years old, with her dad, at
having to
The Hampton Classic Horse Show
bring his work
home with
him in the
form of his family, he has never lost that selflessness that
has allowed me to pursue my own goals. For this, I am forever grateful.
“He has been a role model for me throughout my life,
and someone I hope to be able to emulate. There is no one
else I would be more proud of to have as my father.” Y
n February
14th, 1992 my
father got down on
one knee with a diamond ring in the aisle
of a barn in front of
the stall of my mother’s horse. He kept
the ring in the new
tack trunk that he
made just for her, and
when my mother said yes, he looked at her horse and said,
“Ha! She’s mine now!” Little did he know that three years
later he’d have a daughter who loves horses just as much
as her mother.
“My father doesn’t know much about horses. He doesn’t
understand why six days a week, despite the weather, I am
with my horse Milo for hours at a time. He doesn’t understand why horse show days are so lengthy. He doesn’t
understand how my numerous fall-offs are crucial to my
learning experience. And he doesn’t quite know why I’ve
dedicated my life to this sport. However, every time he
comes to the barn he lets Milo lick his face, pick his pockets
for treats, and rub his itchy face on him.
“He comes to every horse show ready to cheer his little
girl on. For every fall, I know he will always pick me up. He
supports me in all that I do. He still writes the monthly
checks for board, for the vet, farrier, chiropractor, and whatever else my high-maintenance horse needs.
“I couldn’t ask for a better father. His support and love
for me is something that is irreplaceable. I am such a lucky
girl to be able to do what I love and have someone support
it, even with very little understanding of it.
“Daddy, Happy Father’s Day! Thank you for being an
amazing father. I love you!” Y

“M

he’s always at the
