Effie Yeaw Nature Center A community service of the American River Natural History Association 2015 - 2016 EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ABOUT EFFIE YEAW NATURE CENTER The Effie Yeaw Nature Center gives students of all ages and backgrounds a guided experience in nature that excites their curiosity and inspires investigation. Bring your students to Effie Yeaw Nature Center where they will: Discover the unique plants and wildlife in our beautiful 100-acre Nature Preserve and along the American River Explore the Center’s interactive museum and meet some of our native raptors, reptiles, and amphibians Experience the traditions of the Nisenan Maidu native culture in the replica village through stories, demonstrations, hikes, crafts, and games Wade into local ponds and rivers, investigating life under the water’s surface Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards The Nature Center’s programs provide learning experiences that are integrated across disciplines and linked to real world issues. These programs give students an opportunity to experience how science is done and to engage in the critical thinking and collaborative conversations emphasized in the new Common Core State Standards. To help educators through the transition to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Effie Yeaw Nature Center naturalists and docents will work with each teacher to ensure that our educational programs meet specific standards being used for their grade level and classroom/district. What Your Colleagues Say About Us... Join the hundreds of educators who bring the natural world to their students each year through Effie Yeaw Nature Center’s programs. “My students were very excited to see and touch animal skulls, furs, feathers and a snake. After the presentation my students were eager to check out books from the school library to find out more about birds and reptiles. It has been a perfect introduction to the American River ecosystem I am about to teach.” Mr. Machado and Mrs. Shin, 2nd-4th grade teachers at Isador Cohen Elementary “Your example of kindness is the greatest lesson you shared at Effie Yeaw, as evidenced by the smiling faces of our 4th graders - and their thoughtful reflections.” Samuel A. Brewer, 4th grade teacher at David Lubin Elementary “I so appreciate your gentle mannerisms, knowledge, and expertise… The balance between listening and learning, the nature walk, and the hands-on activities was perfect… I will look forward to returning with my students... In the meantime, I will highly recommend this program to my colleagues.” Karen Nelson, 3rd grade teacher at Grass Valley Charter School The Nature Center and the surrounding beautiful 100-acre Nature Preserve Page 1 sacnaturecenter.net PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE We offer a range of programs for every grade level Pro grams Offered Nature Area Tours Length: 1 hour 45 mins Maidu Cultural Programs Length: varying Pond and River Lab & Field Study Length: 4 hours total Pond and River Classroom Labs Length: 75 mins Gold Discovery Length: 75 mins Critters of the Americ an Riv er Length: 1 hour Sensational Senses Length: 1 hour Scales and Tails Length: 1 hour Amazing Adaptations Length: 75 mins Raptors of the River Length: 75 mins Grade Level Page K 1 2 3 4 5 6 2 3 4 4 Wildlife abounds in the Nature Preserve 4 5 5 5 5 5 We can tailor any of our programs to fit your needs!
