Meet The Needs Of LGBTQI People In Cheshire
With Confidence, Knowledge and Skill
people friendly. The event is followed by a free networking lunch to give
you the opportunity to make new connections and celebrate the successes
of LGBTQI equality in Cheshire.
Take Pride In Freedom is a campaign by Body Positive to improve
services in Cheshire for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, questioning and
intersex people. The conference gives you an opportunity to experience a
one-hour master class on sexuality diversity. The master class takes a
look into some of the latest research in human sexuality and what
organisations need to include as part of their service design. By the end
of the day you will be more confident and up-to-date working with the
local needs of LGBTQI people.
All delegates will receive free refreshments and lunch in addition to a
rainbow lanyard to show their support for LGBTQI people in Cheshire.
Break-out sessions with representatives from the LGBTQI community
will give you valuable experience to apply to your organisation. Use this
opportunity to find out what you need to know about; the experience of
older LGBTQI people; LGBTQI people from the BAME community; issues
in services faced by trans people; and making your organisations young

working with disenfranchised and vulnerable groups. We are looking for new trustees to guide the organisation

Preparations for October’s Chester Pride are well
underway, and there are some exciting fundraisers
coming up for both adults and families. Chester Pride is
dedicated to supporting and celebrating diversity in the
LGBT community, and this year the fundraisers have
been extended to include several family fun-days in
Chester’s Grosvenor Park, so LGBT families can
celebrate their diversity in a safe and supportive
environment.
The next family fun day takes place on Saturday July 23rd, with stalls,
crafts and plenty of activities to get involved with, such as Brio leisure
who will be offering free lessons, such as a bit of Zumba, to get your
family active. Also at the fun-day will be the first ever under-18s heat
of ‘Chester Pride’s Got Talent’, so budding singers and musicians can
compete for the chance to perform on the main stage of Chester Pride in
October. Drop in to the Grosvenor Park activity centre anytime from 124pm to join in with the family fun-day, but if you want to compete in
Chester Pride’s Got Talent be sure to register via the website,
chesterpride.co.uk.
Before the family-fun day, however, there is an adult event as part of
the Pride in the Park events. ‘Park Sounds’, promising to be a fun
evening with live music from two local bands, and a chance to try some
something different with free relaxing Tai Chi lessons. Park Sounds
takes place at the Grosvenor Park activity centre on Saturday June 18th
from 7:00pm, so drop in to hear the atmospheric sounds of singersongwriter Jess Ball, and the acclaimed band ‘Heal the Last Stand’.
On the 1st July there will be a lively night at the Old Queen’s Head, on
Foregate Street in Chester city centre, as this long standing LGBT venue
they raise money to support Chester Pride. From 8pm until late it
promises to be a night of karaoke, cabaret, music and the outrageous
drag act Shagger.
It’s not just fundraisers; registration is now open for the Parade, the
marketplace and the health and wellbeing zone for the main Chester
Pride event on October 1st. If you are interested in any of these, simply
e-mail [email protected] for more information.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans Engagement Officer
To ensure that people from the LGB&T communities who live, work and socialise in Cheshire have confidence in the Force, Cheshire
Police have an Engagement Officer. We want people to be confident that they will be treated fairly and with respect and have a clear
understanding that they can report homophobic and transphobic hate crime and incidents directly to Cheshire Police, knowing that there
are staff adequately trained to deal with them.
If you need to speak to the Equality and Diversity Engagement Officer contact 101 for general enquiries or 999 in an emergency and you
will be directed from there. The service is available 24 hours.
We are a group for LGB parents, their
children families and friends to socialise
and share experiences. Come and join

Young people at Crewe YMCA check out
the new C-Card scheme which will
provide access to free condoms for
anyone between the ages of 13 - 24
C-Card Condom Distribution Scheme Launches
A new scheme is being launched for young people living in
both Cheshire East and Cheshire West & Chester. The C-Card
Condom Distribution Scheme allows people aged 13 - 24 to
access free condoms, take a chlamydia/gonorrhoea test and
access information about sexual health. The scheme aims to
reduce unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted
infections (STI’s) in young people - making their sex lives
healthier and happier.
The scheme works by young people registering for a C-Card - a
credit card sized card that fits into a purse or wallet. Young people
can then collect free condoms by simply showing their card at
associated C-Card condom distribution sites. The service is
accessible for all young people, with sites being run by colleges,
youth groups, the CAB and many more. The scheme promotes
diversity and encourages all young people to think about their
sexual health and to become independent in keeping well.
During the process of setting up the scheme, Body Positive spoke
with many young people, including a local LGBT youth group, to
ensure the scheme is inclusive and meet the needs of all.
Both staff and young people agreed that it is of upmost importance
that all young people are made aware of the scheme and that they
feel that it is approachable and non-judgemental, particularly
around issues of sexuality and gender. The scheme is confidential
and discreet. Sites will also provide resources on a number of sexual
health issues relating to young people.
Condoms can provide protection from the transmission of all STI’s.
STI’s are not selective and can often be transmitted easily. Some
STI’s may not even present with symptoms. It is therefore important
for us all that we protect ourselves and those we choose to have sex
with. Condoms are available in different sizes and varieties flavours, glow in the dark and ribs & dots. Take your pick to ensure
that your experience is both safe and fun.
If you are a young person who is interested in registering for a CCard please see the Body Positive website for details of Registration
sites. The website also shows a list of Distribution sites that are
available. If your organisation is interested in being involved with
the C-Card please contact Body Positive on 01270 623150 or
[email protected]. Training and resources are provided.
Free condoms by post are still available for people 25 years and over. Please see our website
for details or complete the ‘Free condom and Lube’ form attached to the Cheese.
Hello, my name is Colin and I am the newly appointed Community Development Worker at Body
Positive. I'll be working in colleges across Cheshire helping to deliver our outstanding
programme of Sexual Health and Relationships tutorials. I will also help to staff our regular
'Sexwise' drop-ins across the area offering support and information on Sexual Health including,
Contraception, Sexually Transmitted Infections and local sexual health services. We also offer
the opportunity to take up a Chlamydia screen if you are under 24 years old and provide free
condoms to anyone who drops by. I have worked in the field of Sexual Health for over thirty
years in both paid and unpaid roles. Away from work I love both cooking and reading (but not at
the same time). I also enjoy going to the theatre and enjoy a good Agatha Christie mystery (and
yes, the butler did it!).
Experiences of
cancer care for
LGB people
Have you had experience of cancer? You can help to improve services.
To take part in a research project being funded by Macmillan Cancer Care you would need to be willing to be
interviewed on camera for about an hour. This would usually take place at your home, but other venues can be
arranged. The end product will be a series of videos freely available to the public (but targeted at healthcare
professionals), to help people understand LGB people’s experiences of cancer care.
To discuss this further contact Maurice Nagington at the University of Manchester, Tel. 07470 807944 (please
leave voicemail) Email. [email protected]
