From the Baykeeper
If there is one thing we
know about at NY/NJ
Baykeeper it is
persistence. Nearly six
years ago we were forced
to abandon our oyster
reefs in Keyport Harbor
and Navesink River due
to a new NJDEP policy
that banned the use of
oyster in research and
restoration projects in
waters deemed too
contaminated. Now, we
are back in the water,
thanks to a great
partnership with the U.S.
Navy and increased
coordination with
NJDEP, with a new
experimental reef and
living shoreline project.
We will continue to work
to make sure that our
urban shorelines and
waters are protected and
restored, not ignored.

Protect Your Waterways Say NO to Williams
Pipeline
A natural gas pipeline, proposed by Williams, would stretch from
Old Bridge, NJ to Rockaway Point, nearly 22 miles across
Raritan Bay. The pipeline construction has the potential to
disturb significant shellfish beds and fish habitat, as well as stir
up sediment. Williams just held public meetings, but not along
the Raritan Bayshore. We have asked local elected leaders to
request these hearings so that your voice can be heard. Contact
your Mayor and ask them to urge Williams for more public
meetings along the Bayshore! Want more ways to get
involved? Text PIPE to 7324167332.
Our First of its Kind Living Shoreline Will Break
Ground Next Week! NY/NJ Baykeeper and our partners will begin installing
our urban living shoreline next Wednesday. Located at
Naval Weapons Station Earle, the 0.91 acre living
shoreline will consist of an artificial reef using live
oysters and concrete structures known as oyster castles
to fortify and protect the coast along the Raritan
Bayshore. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and
Instagram to stay up to date! What Are You Up to Next Weekend? It's not too late to reserve your spot for our Boats and
Bridges Eco Cruise next Sunday! Join us as we
circumnavigate Staten Island and take in views of a boat
graveyard, the Verrazano Bridge, the Outerbridge
Crossing, Bayonne Bridge, and the Goethals Bridge!!

We're committed to
preventing sewage from
entering our waterways
one pumpout at a time!
Raw sewage can lead to
high bacteria counts
which can cause illness
or changes in the marine
environment. To schedule
a FREE boat pumpout in
the Navesink and
Shrewsbury Rivers,
Thank you! We want to extend a big thank you to everyone who
came out to our Keyport Headquarters for our 2nd
Annual Open House! The hit of the evening was Dr.
Allie's touch tank and of course Forty North's oysters!
Don't worry, even if you missed out, you can still
become a member at www.nynjbaykeeper.org/member.
We're only a few thousand dollars short of our $20,000
membership goal for this year! Please become a member
of NY/NJ Baykeeper today and we'll see you at next
year's open house! Our Oysters are Calling Your Name!
Learn about oyster biology and habitat up close and
personal by joining us at our reef near Soundview Park

Rules Wednesday, August 31st, 5:45am Thursday, September 1st, 6:00am. A salt marsh monitoring day is scheduled for August 24th at
8:30am on Staten Island. Email Dr. Allie for details. Catch Up with Team Fecal!
Our water quality monitoring team (affectionately
known as Team Fecal) has been busy this summer
monitoring 9 Bayshore sites for pathogens. Pathogens
are derived from fecal bacteria and can cause illness to
humans and changes to our marine ecosystem. Our sites
include Perth Amboy, the Raritan Yacht Club,
Fisherman’s Beach in South Amboy, Paul’s Beach in Old
Bridge Township and Cedar Street in Keyport. So far,
we've noticed after heavy rain, our Perth Amboy samples
are off the charts testing positive for pathogens due to
the combined sewer overflow (CSO) pipes in the area.
We advise you not to swim or fish in that area after
rainfall. To learn more and to check out our results,, click here. If
you are interested in volunteering, email Meredith Comi
at [email protected]. To check out water
quality at other beaches nationwide, download the Swim
Guide app here to stay up to date and in the know! Protecting, preserving, and restoring the NY/NJ Harbor Estuary since 1989.
