MORE SOCIAL INFO IS ONLINE AT www.indyskiclub.org European Trip Preview Meeting Planned As you may have heard the 2010 OVSC international trip destination has been changed to Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Originally, the plan was to ski Les 3 Vallees, France. However, that plan fell through and Cortina was selected instead. Because of this confusion, there will be a Cortina Preview Meeting at the home of Paul Wood and Bette Dodd at 1552 N. Park Avenue, Indianapolis on Tuesday, July 21 at 6:30pm. Bring your own beverage and a snack to share. Weather permitting, we’ll gather on their back patio. Randy Ridgway, our fearless trip leader, will briefly review what happened to result in the destination change, and then focus on all the exciting possibilities the Cortina trip offers. Cortina was the site of the 2002 OVSC European Trip and was so popular it has been on the OVSC short-list for a return trip. A 2 day post-trip extension to Venice will be offered. There are numerous day tours being planned that will appeal to skiers and non-skiers alike. There will be NO trip sign-ups at this meeting. It is for information and socializing only. Don’t miss it! Hope everyone is enjoying the summer – it’s hard to believe it’s time to think about skiing, but that time has arrived. Your Board has been working diligently for all our members these past few months to arrange some great social events this summer and to put together some great ski trips this coming winter. I hope you’ve had a President chance to join the summer fun, and I hope you’ll attend our August picnic to renew Jim Robinson old acquaintances and to take advantage of the trips on our schedule by signing up for your favorites. Jim ISC GOES TO PENROD The Penrod Art Fair on Saturday, September 12th is billed as “Indiana’s Nicest Day”. The one-day art fair covers the grounds of the Indianapolis Art Museum and features juried arts and crafts, multiple music stages, ballet, and an excellent array of refreshments (including adult beverages for those who indulge!). Several local wineries bring samples of their products. The Ski Club has applied for a booth at this year’s Penrod Fair to showcase our contribution to the Indianapolis community. Our relationship to art? We go to gorgeous places, we take lots of pictures, and we engage in a visually thrilling sport. It will to take a lot of volunteers to make this work. We need volunteers to work at the booth in two-hour shifts to talk to passer-bys about the benefits of skiing and, of course, membership in the ISC. We also will need volunteers to help us set up and tear down our booth. Show your club spirit and help us promote skiing in Indiana at the Penrod Art Fair. To volunteer, email Jennifer Rhamy at [email protected] by August 1. If you can’t volunteer but plan to attend, wear your Indy Ski Club apparel and please stop by to see your club friends at the booth. It will be a great gathering point for those who like to socialize. We’ve asked for a spot near the refreshments, so it will be a great place to relax and talk. With the Indianapolis Ski Club there, it truly will be Indiana’s Nicest Day! Penrod info is at http://www.penrod.org/artsfair.html Indy Ski Club & Indians Baseball vs, Buffalo Bisons Monday July 27 first pitch 7 pm Victory Field Box seats $13, every seat a great view Contact Mel Crichton by July 18 so we can arrange a discount price. The trip includes skiing in Bariloche, Argentina and side trips to one or more of the following - the Galapagos Islands, Machu Picchu (Peru), and Buenos Aires. The trip is currently in the planning stage, and Jim Robinson is the Indy Ski Club contact. If you or your friends/family members are interested in this trip or if you wish to express a preference related to side trips, please contact Jim. Some background: The Galapagos offers SCUBA for moderate to experienced divers and touring for non-divers. Machu Picchu offers biking options, hiking, and of course, touring the Inca ruins. Both the Galapagos & Machu Picchu are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Buenos Aires & Bariloche will be paired as a touring & skiing week. There are plenty of non-skiing options, so even non-skiers should consider this to get a flavor of Latin life. The trip is still out for bids from tour operators so pricing is not yet final. We are planning to have price information, details, etc. at our August picnic and begin taking signups then, so let me know if you have suggestions or comments.
