3RD ORFORD ANNUAL FOOD MARKET
June 14th is the date for the 3rd Annual Orford Real Food Market.
Started in 2012 to raise awareness and funds for Orford School’s
Kitchen Garden Project the market has proved to be a honey pot
for the lovers of good local food.
The 2014 event will have most of the producers from the market in
2012 and 2013 including Orford Country Market plus some exciting
new producers.
As well as offering fresh produce direct from the producer, the
market this year will be offering a wide range of street food to be
enjoyed in the central Meet and Eat Zone. The street food will be
provided by David Grimwood from The Froize with “Gloria's” take
on game, bacon and Blythburgh pork with Pump Street Bakery
bread, and the E8 Food Company with Suffolk salt beef brisket and
pickled cabbage in Adnams sour dough roll, slow braised Suffolk
lamb shoulder burger, mint salad and pickled shallots in a rosemary
brioche and spicy fish dog with crunchy, zesty salad in a warm
tortilla. The Thomas Marshall Education Fund will be offering
strawberries and cream with tea plus a Tombola with foodie prizes.
This year’s market will run from 9.30am to 2.30pm so why not
spend some time meeting the people who produce our local high
quality food and sampling their excellent products.
Proceeds will go to Thomas Marshall Education Fund.

the main news for the club is that on mid summer’s day a

information about this is below.
On June 21 st there will be a trip to Orford Lighthouse. There
will be a charge of £10 for this but the price includes ferry

TOWN HALL CINEMA
June welcomes the showing of the classic Alfred Hitchcock movie
Psycho in Orford Town Hall but it also sees the longest sunlight
hours. This means that, until it is possible to get blackout blinds
fitted to the upper windows, it will be necessary to have a revised
start time in order to be able to view the screen. Please note that
doors open Friday 6th June at 9.30pm and screening begins at
10.00pm.

THE KING'S HEAD, ORFORD
After moving from Surrey to Suffolk, we took over The King's Head
on Monday 19th May. Now that we have just about got our feet
behind the bar, we would like to invite you all to a Meet and Greet
evening on Sunday 8th June from 7.00pm onwards. We look
forward to welcoming you all for an informal chat, with reduced
rate drinks from 7.00 ‘til 9.00pm, along with an array of nibbles and
canapés.
One thing we would like your help with is naming the letting rooms
which currently have the lack lustre titles of 1, 2, 3 & 4.
Suggestions and a brief explanation will be rewarded with a bottle
of Adnams Champagne for each of the room names chosen.
Hope you can come and join us for the evening and look forward to
meeting you all.

Easter People we are! – and a great weekend of Easter celebrations
was had with a magnificent Easter Garden well designed and
constructed. Visitors swelled our Easter Morning congregation
enjoying Easter eggs and refreshments afterwards.
Easter Monday kept us very busy with visitors in to see the garden
and soak up the tranquillity of the chapel and food served to scores
of people. Thanks to all those who helped make it a really
wonderful Eastertide. The garden was finally removed after 3
Sundays. Many thanks to those who gave monetary donations to
purchase pot plants and others who gave to funds. In all adding
just over £700 to funds.
Finally, and after 26 weeks, the front of the Chapel building has
been returned to us with the completion of the St Jude storm
damage restoration. It has been half a year of disruption but the
end result is looking great!

JOHN BEALE
The family and I have been overwhelmed by the cards,
letters, messages and support we have received during
John’s illness and since his death; our thanks to everyone
and to those who came to his funeral seem inadequate to
express the comfort they have brought.
As the surge of last December which resulted in such
distress to many, is fresh in our memories, this poem by
Dannie Abse, read by our grandchildren at the funeral,
recalls Coronation Year 1953 when the great flood on 31 st
January devastated this area; it was also our wedding day.
Strange the potency of a cheap dance tune.
– Noel Coward
One such winged me back to a different post-code,
to an England that like a translation
almost was, to my muscular days
that were marvellous being ordinary.
365 days, marvellous;
to an England where sweet-rationing ended,
where nature tamely resumed its capture
behind park railings. Few thorns. Fewer thistles;
to Vivat Regina and the linseed willow-sound
of Compton and Edrich winning the Ashes.
Elsewhere, Troy always burning. Newspaper stuff.
The recurring decimal of calamity.
Famine. Murder. Pollinating fires.
When they stubbed one out another one flared.
Statesmen lit their cigars from the embers.
They still do. With every enrichment
an injury. They bicker and banquet,
confer and dally, pull on cigars that glow
with blood-light. And the year 1953,
like the arson of Troy, is elsewhere. Ashes.

ALDE/ORE PARTNERSHIP
Well in excess of 100 people attended the partnership’s
Annual Meeting to hear Sir Edward Greenwell announce that
about 40 sites had so far been offered by local landowners
for enabling development (i.e. planning permission would
only be granted if funds from the sale of the land went to
upgrading the river walls). The District Council were at
present considering these sites and would in the next few
months agree a portfolio for discussion. The partnership had
set up a charity to manage these funds.
Sir Edward explained that the partnership’s overall policy
was to upgrade the walls to enable overtopping but to resist
breaching, to avoid very expensive repair costs. During
surge conditions, some flooding is to be expected but
pumping the water out can be done relatively quickly and
cheaply.
Participants then discussed in detail the draft Estuary Plan
and captured information required to support the documents
which will shortly be submitted for a Sustainability
Appraisal. This was an extremely productive and useful
session as representatives from landowners including the
National Trust, RSPB and Suffolk Wildlife Trust, businesses,
leisure, tourism and householders all helped to provide
thoughts and information for the areas they are closely
involved in. The Environment Agency (EA), Natural England,
the County Council, District Council and the Coast and
Heaths AONB unit were all present and helped to advise
every group.
The overall response of the meeting was
extremely positive and gave everyone confidence that the results of all
this effort will be successful.
The main issues highlighted were:-

Coastal Defences: The EA announced the sea
wall at Slaughden would require contributions
from other sources to fund any capital works.

Surcharges: Raising funds by surcharges or
voluntary donations throughout the area

Water management: Ensuring plans for rapid
removal of overtopping water are sufficient,
capturing freshwater at present pumped away,
and irrigation/sewage and cesspit points

Habitat: Ensuring balance of habitat due to
coastal squeeze is sufficient

Employment: recording temporary and long
term losses

DISCOVER YOUR MOBILE LIBRARY
Did you know that the Suffolk Libraries mobile library visits
your area regularly, giving access to hundreds of thousands
of books, including large print, audiobooks and children’s
books? You can also hire CDs and DVDs for a small charge.
If the items you want are not on the van you can reserve
them from the library catalogue free of charge and have
them delivered on the van at a later date. The staff are
very friendly and helpful, and will offer a warm welcome to
anyone who visits. The steps convert into a lift for those
with limited mobility. This is a valuable service to rural and
isolated communities who have lost many of their other
local services, and can also be an opportunity to meet up
with other people and catch up with the local goings on.
Come along to visit us and help to keep this service running
for YOUR community – all are welcome!
The mobile library visits Sudbourne bus shelter at 12.45pm
- 13.00pm and Orford Baron’s Meadow 14.05pm - 14.25pm
and Market Square 14.30pm - 15.45pm on Fridays.

EASTER EGG HUNT
On Saturday 19 th April the sun was shining and our annual
Easter Egg Hunt was attended by many visitors and
supporters. We were so lucky to have lots of great
donations from various local businesses. We had an army of
helpers on the day who manned stalls and helped set up
the event so a huge thanks to everyone. Last but not least,
thanks to all who came and made it the day it turned out to
be. There was such a lovely buzz of children having fun and
parents, relatives and friends chatting and indulging on the
cake stall.
People tried their luck on the raffle and welly wanging and
the children enjoyed searching for treats in the hunt! All
contributions and support are valued and helped us to raise
over £1,000 for Orford School. This will go a long way to
help with projects within the school and is vital in rural
schools where the numbers of children are small therefore
so is government funding. We hope to see you all again
next year and thanks again to all who came, donated,
helped and enjoyed.
Finally, thanks to English Heritage for the use of the superb
castle grounds.

SCDC LEISURE STRATEGY
Suffolk Coastal is committed to improving
the health and wellbeing of people in this
District.
To make a real difference, we are
developing a clear strategy which will
provide
direction
to
our
chosen
development partner for the next decade.
Our aim is to engage with local people to
develop this strategy which will shape how
we deliver our services improving the
health, wellbeing and fitness of our
communities.
We need to stress this is a wide-ranging
review and is about all forms of leisure and
recreation, not just sport.
The guiding principle is that we are
including leisure and recreation pursuits
that people ‘do’ rather than those that they
‘view’. This could include taking your
children to a local play area, walking in the
countryside, horse riding or playing a game
of football with your local club.
Local people have a key role to play in
informing and shaping this strategy. We
need you to tell us your requirements, to
ensure this strategy reflects your needs
and has a positive impact on your future
health and wellbeing.
To take part in this process and have your
say please complete our short online
