Gerry Bertier is recognized
as one of Alexandria’s 100
Greatest Athletes. He was a
leader on perhaps the best
football team in Virginia high
school history, the 1971 T.C.
Williams Titans. Gerry was
Alexandria’s first high school
All-American and “probably
the best linebacker in the
country at the time,” according
to head coach Herman Boone.
Gerry suffered a spinal cord injury following that season
and thereafter used his leadership and advocacy skills
to make the world more accessible for people with
disabilities. Tragically, Gerry died in 1981 when his
car was struck by a drunk driver. The popular Disney
movie “Remember the Titans” memorialized him and
his teammates.

The Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Rehabilitation and
Research Center at Virginia Commonwealth University
Health System (VCUHS) provides comprehensive
state-of-the-art care with a commitment to improve
hope, function and quality of life. VCUHS is the
only Level I trauma center in central Virginia and one
of just 20 institutions nationwide to have had federal
designation as a Model Systems for SCI Care.
The goal of the national SCI research program
at VCUHS is to pursue medical and therapeutic
advancements in care and outcomes for individuals with
SCI. The program actively participates in collaborative
projects sponsored by the National SCI Model Systems
and provides leadership in national dissemination
and education.
