W
elcome to Art in Action 2016
The layout has changed this year so look closely at the map.
Don’t miss Sculpture which is now in the Walled Garden.
New this year is the pixilated world of the Digital Art Tent. There is an
unmissable exhibition of photos in the house celebrating forty years of
Art in Action since the show started in 1977.
You can get interactive with The Art Academy’s ‘Curiouser and
Curiouser’ or indulge in Zen brushwork by the river whilst drinking
green tea and listening to the Shakuhachi flute.
Our guest speakers this year are all stars: Andrew Brewerton, Jekka
McVicar, Lady Lucinda Lambton and the TV ceramicists Keith Brymer
Jones and Kate Malone.
There is too much more to mention fully: music, dancing, acting,
storytelling and all the demonstrations of the visual arts and crafts.
Do not forget the practical classes which must be booked early to
avoid disappointment.
Good luck fitting it all in!
Take a little time to flick through this excellent programme and then
go and discover art in action for yourself.
Best wishes,
Simon Buchanan

10 years of Best of the Best
This year the Best of the Best awards will work in a new way. Rather than having a
designated marquee as in previous years, awards will be made to demonstrators in their own
marquees for the best stand and best demonstration.
This is to celebrate and encourage Art in Action’s unique appeal as a demonstration event.
The ‘Best Stand’ awards will be decided by each demonstrator voting for the best stand in
their section.
The ‘Best Demonstration’ award will be decided by a judging panel made up of the past
organiser of Art in Action, past winners of the Best of the Best and guest lecturers.
The judging will take place on the first day of the show.

Robin Mukherjee: The Art of Story - Writing Structure
Friday 12:30pm − 1:30pm & Sunday 2:00pm − 3:00pm − Lecture Room 1
If you write stories, you need structure. But what does that even mean? A formula? A set of rude mechanics? Or
something that is, in itself, natural, beautiful and profound? Robin Mukherjee, an award winning writer whose work
spans theatre, radio drama, television and film, will seek to demystify this apparently tricky aspect of the literary
arts. His recent works include the BAFTA nominated children’s drama, ‘Combat Kids’, the feature film ‘Lore’, award
winning, Judge Dee, and Hetty Feather. His book, ‘The Art of Screenplays’ has been acclaimed worldwide. He is a
lecturer in creative writing at Bath Spa University. Hampshire. www.robinmukherjee.com
Linda Proud: John Ruskin - Writer, Artist and Seer
Thursday 11:00am − 12:00pm & Sunday 12:30pm − 1:30pm − Lecture Room 1
“The greatest thing a human soul ever does in this world is to see something, and tell what he saw in a plain way…
to see clearly is poetry, prophecy, and religion – all in one.” John Ruskin’s close observations of nature inspired
William Morris, the Pre-Raphaelites, and planted the seeds for modern views about nature and its role as teacher in
art and life. This talk, illustrated with natural forms, will have a look at the world through Ruskin’s eyes and try to
catch a true glimpse of the seer himself. Oxford. www.lindaproud.com

Alan Roberts: Discovering Poetry
Thursday 12:30pm − 1:30pm & Saturday 11:00am − 12:00pm − Lecture Room 1
Understanding and enhancing our ability to create has preoccupied human beings for centuries. This hastened around
the mid-1950s, when the term “creativity” was first coined and creativity began to be formally studied.
Bristol. 07772 267004. www.jengash.co.uk
Alan Roberts has been running a group Discovering Poetry for the past six years; his love of poetry goes back 60
years. In an hour Alan and members of the group will share this love of poetry as a gift to be read from the page,
recited from the heart or discovered within. Middlesex. [email protected]
Heidi Herrmann: Natural Beekeeping - The bees: Our friends
Sunday 2:00pm − 3:00pm − Lecture Room 2
Neville Wortman: The Confident Voice
Friday 11:00am − 12:00pm & Saturday 2:00pm − 3:00pm − Lecture Room 1
For most of us, bees are associated with honey and beekeeping. But there is so much more to bees. The bees’ wisdom,
their sense of purpose and the great gesture of giving emodied by the hive can guide and inspire us in wonderful ways.
Neville takes the Group in a fully inter-active voice and movement workshop and demonstration of clear spoken
English, breathing and communication techniques for more confident speaking in public on all occasions. London.
