Census numbers rank Comal 7th
among rapidly growing counties

The fact that the New
Braunfels area is among the
fastest-growing on the Ameri-
can map was confirmed Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.
According to new population
estimates, Comal County, Guadalupe County, three neigh-
boring counties and the New
Braunfels-San Antonio metro
area all made various lists of the
fastest-growing places in the
country.
Comal County ranked as the
seventh-fastest growing large
county in the United States.
The Census Bureau, in its list
of population estimates for the
100 fastest-growing U.S. counties with 10,000 or more population, reported that Comal’s
population had grown from
123,439 in 2014 to 129,048 in
2015. Those 5,609 additional
residents in Comal represented
a 4.5-percent growth from July

conditioning is a big thing.

thing,” Scott said. “To have
a house that’s energy efficient so I’m not spending a
lot on those things is a big
thing. We’re very fortunate
to have something like this
for ourselves.”

County officials for
years have espoused the
need for changes at the
jail, saying the facility is
old, too small and its configuration out of date with
21st century jailing practices.
The current 337-bed
jail was built in 1985 and
expanded in 1999. Its average daily population has
increased in recent years
and often teeters near capacity, but staff members
keep the facility running
according to established
standards, officials have
said.
Commissioners Court
announced its decision
at a Thursday morning
meeting.
“HDR impressed us
with its commitment to
designing a quality jail
that will meet both our
needs and our budget,”
County Judge Sherman
Krause said. “We look
forward to working with
the HDR team as we move

but HDR’s flexibility and

In coming months, the
county also will select a
project manager and construction manager-at-risk
as it moves forward with
plans for the new jail.
