Paul Gerhardt – A man who left his mark on the Spreewald
town of Lübben.
He was unobtrusive but a very eloquent person as is shown
in more than 130 songs and sermons composed and written
by him. Paul Gerhardt – a theologian, studied in the Luthertown Wittenberg,
eight years of hardship
was experienced,
the theologian of Lübben
gave the citizens of the town
encouragement and comfort,
supported them and was their matriarch.
His songs which were set to music by
Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Crüger,
and Johann Georg Ebeling
are well known by the Protestant and
Catholic Christians.
Most of his songs are part of
the treasures of historical world
culture and are sung
all over the world.
followed the call of the city fathers of the consistory in 1668
to go to Lübben to become a priest after a remarkable sermon about Epheser 5.19 in the town church in Lübben. After

The poet of these songs lived in Lübben
till he died on May 27th in 1676,

Paul Gerhard – his presence is felt in many different places
and his memories have been upheld ever since.
In 1907, the high school of the town was given the name of
this great lyrical poet of the Protestant church. 1907 was also
his 300th birthday and in his memory the well known Berliner
sculptor Friedrich Pfannschmidt built a memorial which was
placed in front of the three-naved-hall church building.
The Paul Gerhardt-Church which is in the heart of the town
achieved his name in 1931 and his final resting place is front of
the altar. Paul Gerhardt, the exceptional church song writer and
poet of the German language still leaves his mark in Lübben.

and waiting to be explored.
Four ports are the start and finish of the famous boat trips
into the Lower or Upper Spreewald. The camping site lies in
the middle of the green municipal oasis which is just called
Lübben (Spreewald).
Lübben was the capital of the Niederlausitz for centuries
and now you will find one of the youngest but also one of
the finest museums in the county of Brandenburg directly
in the vintage castle district. You can also enjoy brilliant
concerts which take place in the magnificent coat of arms
hall of the well-fortified castle tower or next to it on the
castle island.

Experience Lübben walking and strolling through the picturesque
town. Guides will take you on the paths that Paul Gerhardt went
along. The short entertaining tour starts in the city centre where
the vicarage was situated. At the old town wall you will get to
know what happened to the famous poet. He didn`t want to take
any further step forward at that place. And why?
In autumn and in winter you got stuck in mud when leaving the
parish district. How have times changed since then.
After passing Breite Straße you enter the grove (Hain). Enjoy the
shady trails under old oaks and various species of trees, the birdsong and rare plants. The Liuba rock reminds you of a Sorbian
goddess who was worshipped there in times past.
Along the Berste and the river Spree you walk past the Lübbener
Paul Gerhardt high school and discover the green meadows with
the characteristic ambience of our region.
Strutting storks can be watched here. To the right you are attracted by the tower of the Paul- Gerhardt- Church to return to the city
center.
