See Page 7 Meet Mr. Fiorillo By Chelsea Giordano & Salvatore Lagrotteria This year Shore Regional welcomes our new Assistant Principal, Mr. Michael Fiorillo. Mr. Fiorillo grew up in Neptune and is a graduate of Neptune High School. It was not until the end of his Freshman year of college that he decided on a career in Education. Upon graduating from Montclair University, inspired by a history professor, Mr. Fiorollo became a history teacher himself. During his years as a high school teacher, he enjoyed staying involved in co-curricular activities and was even the Wrestling coach. When he first came to Shore Regional, Mr. Fiorollo commented that he “loved how welcoming everyone was and it made him feel very comfortable.” During the summer months, he witnessed how faculty and students came together and any nervous energy he had turned into excitement. Mr. Fiorillo starts his day at 4:30 a.m. From the second that he steps into the doors of Shore Regional, his day is off and running. As Shore’s newest Assistant Principal, Mr. Fiorollo’s main responsibilities are discipline, attendance, and monitoring co-curricular activities. He commented that he thinks we are a school moving in the right direction. He is very happy about everyone having a Chromebook saying that it puts more work on the students which is necessary for a successful classroom experience. The introduction of Chromebooks is a great step in the direction of bringing technology into our 21st century classrooms. When asked what he looks forward to most as his work day comes to a close, Mr. Fiorollo responded, “spending time with my family”. Typically, Mr. Fiorollo’s day does not end with the 10th period bell as he is frequently attending after school events such as the talent show, various fundraisers and Football games commenting that that he “enjoys being involved”. The Shore Regional family welcomes Mr. Fiorollo to our Blue Devil community! Chromebooks Are Here! By Casey Birdsall The introduction of Chromebooks at Shore Regional High School this year is changing how students are learning. The Chromebooks allow students to use online textbooks, access the internet, and complete collaborative assignments using Google Chrome technology essentially replacing more conventional methods of learning. The faculty at Shore Regional High School continually looks for innovative ways to incorporate the Chromebooks into their daily lessons. “All my courses are fully ‘online’ via Google Apps and Chrome OS, and thus, paperless,” comments History teacher, Mr. Ker. Mr.Carney commented that in his Latin classrooms “the Chromebooks are used as online dictionaries, grammar resources, research tools, and notebooks.” In regards to the Science department’s use of Chromebooks, Mrs.Cook says that she allows “students to make the choice and use them for note-taking if they prefer typing over handwriting notes.” With such a major influx of technology in the classroom, teachers are learning to balance the 21st century experience with traditional learning methods. “While I love the integration of technology, I still do plan to enable old-fashioned writing within my classroom to practice the art of penmanship,” says English teacher, Ms. Mauro. There are of course challenges teachers face when opening their door to this new wave of learning. “Such a powerful tool comes with a level of responsibility. Playing Tetris, rather than paying attention, will undermine rather than enhance student learning.” As the introduction is a learning curve for all involved, one thing is for sure. The face of education is changing and technology is at the fore-front. Students Of The Month Shore’s “Student of the Month” program celebrates individual achievements by creating a culture of learning that values academic success and elevates awareness of student contributions to the Shore community at large. September’s honorees are Samantha Irace and John Leslie and October’s honorees are Victoria Cantelmo and Conor O’Brien. Since 2003, all schools across the state of New Jersey have been observing School Violence Awareness week on the third week of October, this year, October 21-25. The Student Council decided on a campaign to have students sign a pledge to prevent and help stop bullying and violence in their school and community. When students signed the pledge they received a free lollipop and their signed pledge was taped to the wall outside of the school cafeteria to show solidarity amongst the students. The campaign, known as “Lollies for Love,” was very successful with hundreds of students taking the pledge Fall 2013 SHORE REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Board of Education Ronald O’Neill, President David Baker Beth J. Brain Tumor Bash Raises Awareness By Katie Sempkowski Thursday, September 26th, proved to be a day that allowed people of all ages to bring awareness to brain tumors, a disease that hits close to home for many within the Shore Regional community. This was an event held in the main gym in honor of Alex Munoz, a fellow student at Shore diagnosed with a brain tumor. All of the proceeds went to the Kourtney Rose Foundation, a foundation set up in memory of Kourtney Rose Gillette, another young resident of Oceanport who had died from a brain tumor. Families, kids, teachers, and students were encouraged to participate in the raffle, games, and dance-a-thon. The dance-athon ran from 4:30 to 6:30 for children and 7 to 9 for teenagers. Mr. Amaral, the advisor for the Conquer Cancer Club, when asked the main goal of the event said, “Hopefully we can raise a lot of money for the Munoz family and it proves to be a way to bring the community together.” The Brain Tumor Bash provided a good time for all in attendance. Ms. Mauro has taught English before at Maple Place in Oceanport and came to Shore Regional when she was asked to fill in for Mrs. Koontz during her leave. She graduated from Rowan University and has always wanted to be a teacher. She seems very passionate about teaching so I asked her what inspired her to be one. She replied, “I was obsessed with school in a nerdy kind of way, also my third grade teacher Mrs. Evans was the one who inspired me the most as she made me love reading.” In college, Ms. Mauro had to write a paper and give an award to someone who inspired her the most. It just so happened to be her third grade teacher Mrs. Evans “I remember her being so excited and crying”. When I asked her about how she liked Shore she immediately responded as if there was nothing not to like about it “ I like the respect among the students and the willingness to collaborate with teachers and the overall happiness and student drive to learn”. Ms. Mauro seems like a great, hard working teacher as she loves what she does. Shore welcomes her to the house of the Blue Devils and hopes she will enjoy her time here. Meet Mrs. Robinson Interviewed by Alex Nichols Meet Ms. Mandile Interviewed by Codianne Gump Stephany Araujo Did you always want to be an artist? If so did anyone inspire you to become an artist? My dad inspired me to be an artist. He was in advertising he was very creative. He always encouraged my creative side. What college did you go to? Why? I went to Kean University I was an entire art department (by myself) for ten years. I have worked at vo-tech high school and as an academic specialist at a post high school level where I taught & researched contemporary nontoxic printing methods. Why did you choose to teach art? Because my graphic arts background allows me to bring a decidedly practical slant to very fine art. What do you like most about Shore Regional? I like the sense of community and the incredible amount of opportunities for students and how very friendly everyone is here. What are some of your interests outside of school? I do freelance art and design and a book cover design that was just published and is on sale on Amazon. The book is called Breathe. Think. Lead. I enjoy the beach, needlework, sewing, and ethnic cooking Do you have a favorite artist? If so why? Tibor. he is a designer, because of his exceptional design. What made you want to be an art teacher? I actually only started being an art teacher 6 years ago. I went to art school to be an illustrator and became an art director manager. Once I had children, teaching art was perfect because she could still use her creativity and be close to home. Who is your favorite artist? Why? Edgar Degas and Georgia O’ keefe are two of my favorite artist. They both use vibrant colors and get some much emotion in simple pieces and they are both very different artists but they both inspire me in different ways. Did you teach anywhere else before coming to shore? I taught at Middle Town North and Mater Dei before coming to Shore Regional. What do you like most about teaching at Shore Regional? The small class sizes are nice and the students are very open to trying new things which I like. Is there anything else you would like to add? I still draw and paint and my work is permanently shown in Ocean Grove main galleria and I still works with oils, pastels, and sketches. Meet Ms. McPeek Interviewed by Chelsea Giordano and Salvatore Lagrotteria Shore Regional is excited to welcome Miss McPeek as our new gym teacher. Coming in as a new teacher Miss McPeek liked the whole community feel of the school as well as the towns surrounding it. She states, “It feels like everyone looks out for each other.” From the time she was young, she always knew she wanted to be a teacher but was unsure of what subject. In her first year of college she wanted to be a dentist and then changed her mind. After changing her mind for the second time, she quickly changed back to education. Miss McPeek’s daily routine consists of waking up at 6:00, leaving her house by 6:40 and eating breakfast in the car on the way to school. All teachers have main responsibilities whether they are in the classroom or the gym. Miss McPeek’s responsibilities as a teacher are making sure students are being safe while engaging in physical activity, trying to promote social skills and responsibility through sports and activities to have fun. When Miss McPeek is not working, some things she does in her free time are traveling and surfing in the summer. She has run half marathons before as well as a full marathon. She is the Freshman field hockey coach at Shore as well as coaching Lacrosse. Her hopes for the future are that graduated students come back and say they have learned something from being in her Gym class in high school. Shore Regional welcomes Miss McPeek to our famil and hopes that she has a rewarding and fulfilling career in all that it has to offer her! 4 The Beacon What’s Happening Flooding in Colorado Brings Sandy Memories Rushing Back By Rachel Primavera This past September, major flooding struck a few counties in Colorado. It is so devastating to all of the residents. Over six thousand residents have been evacuated. As if right now, ten people have died and many people are missing. Weld County, Boulder County, Larimer County, El Paso County, Clear Creek County are counties in Colorado that have been hit by this tragedy. There are millions of dollars worth of damage and it will take a very long time for them to rebuild. The East coast knows this story all too well. We can feel their pain and relate to them because of Hurricane Sandy. It has been a year since Hurricane Sandy hit and demolished so many shore areas. Our own Shore Regional High School was affected. We took in the Monmouth Beach Elementary School students so that they would have a place to learn. Their school was badly destroyed due to the storm with nearly four feet of water filling their hallways and classrooms. Colorado may feel desperate and don’t know where to start the rebuilding process. That is how we felt after Sandy. The lives of so many people changed as well as the people living in Colorado. The destruction due to Sandy was so horrible. People’s homes were washed away. Many more homes in Colorado were washed away, though. A year later we are back on our feet and we need to use what we learned to help Colorado in their recent tragedy. Colorado needs to have this positive attitude and look forward to the future. This journey of rebuilding will take a lot of time and hard work but it is the light at the end of the tunnel that will keep them working hard. Seaside’s Devestating Fire By Jill Klem Fall 2013 Brand New Parking Lot By Kayla Valinoti Shore Regional High School students were greeted in a different way on the first day of school. A massive traffic back up onto the front entrance of the school, highway 36, caused much concern for students. The cause for this event is the parking lot construction, which has been going on since the beginning of the summer. The construction team finished the front parking lot just in time for the first day of school. I interviewed my fellow Senior classmate, Melissa Canneto, about the recent construction: Q: How has the parking lot construction effected you? A: Unfortunately, it has made me go completely out of my way when driving to school. I could be to school in 5 minutes, but now it takes about 10 because I can’t use the back entrance. Q: Do you think the construction was necessary? A: I think that after the construction is done we will all see that is was necessary, but right now it makes my drive to school much longer. Q: Are you looking forward to seeing the final result? A: I am looking forward to seeing the outcome of the construction. They have been working on it since the summer and I think it will make the school parking lots look and function more efficiently. Though the construction may have caused a lot of traffic for students and parents, it was a necessary improvement for our school. The new parking lot will provide more parking spaces for students and visitors. Also, a newly paved road will provide a smooth drive for everyone. Although the construction is inconvenient now, the result will please everyone for years to come. Shore’s Club Shoutouts By Kristen Gomez & Staff As the first marking period comes to a close many clubs are well underway in regards to fundrwaisers and events. The flames destroyed approximately fifty oceanfront businesses, including bars, restaurants and T-shirt shops. With flames as high as fifty feet, authorities say the fire was made worse by the high winds which pushed the flames northward. Early the next morning, Christie met with business owners to talk about inevitable plans to rebuild. He is promising an aggressive response to haul away the rubble and to again rebuild the boardwalk. The fire is a substantial blow to a community still reeling from the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. Fall 2013 The Beacon 5 Arts & Entertainment The Movies are ‘Catching Fire’ By Troy Maher The bird. The pin. The love triangle. The girl on fire. All symbols from the burning hot Hunger Games book series by Suzanne Collins. The sequal Catching Fire is one of 2013’s most anticipated movies of the year representing the second book in the now best-selling trilogy. Fans of the series have been waiting just over a year and a half for its debut on November 22, 2013. Catching Fire begins six months after the last Hunger Games are finished. Barely able to recover from the traumatic events of those Games, Katniss prepares for the annual Victors Tour. The ever complicated love triangle between Peeta, Gale, and Katniss is sure to keep audiences on the edge of thei seats. The political backdrop of the movie progresses quickly as President Snow seeks revenge on Katniss for her rebellious tendencaies in the battlefield. Oscar winning actress, Jennifer Lawrence, will reprise her role as Katniss Everdeen alongside Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark and Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne. Yet, super-fans are anxiously anticipating the new characters Finnick Odair portrayed by Sam Claflin, and Johanna Mason portrayed by Jena Malone. One thing is for sure, no matter what ...this movie is sure to ‘catch fire’. Set Your DVR By Stephany Araujo This fall there have been many new, exciting shows out and new seasons to previous shows that have hit top ratings. The question is which ones are worth watching? Some new fall shows after two weeks have already been canceled and taken off the air due to poor performance and ratings. Top networks like the CW, ABC, abc family, FOX and CBS have been creating a variety of shows in hopes to catch the eyes of former and new viewers and have higher ratings as they are all competing with each other. New shows like Ravenwood, The Originals, Reign, Arrow, or shows with new seasons of The Mentalist, NCIS, Criminal Minds, The Vampire Diaries and many more are some must watch shows that have caught the attention of many. Each show has an interesting, mysterious plot behind them that seems to foreshadow an upcoming event in the story line that makes viewers anxious to see what happens next and return to watch the next episode which is what the networks want most. Shows that have to do with the supernatural, criminal, and even historical events are just some of the themes that people seem to be interested in these days and networks are taking advantage of the knowledge in hopes to make a hit during primetime TV. Not every show will reach the expectations a network anticipates, but its the viewers who control what happens next so be sure to tune in to your favorite show! The Royal Baby Has Arrived By Samantha Villa On July 23rd of 2013, George Alexander Louis was brought into the world at St.Mary’s Hospital in London. The 8 lb., 6 oz. baby is third in line for the throne, currently being held by his 87 year old great grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, behind Charles and William. As the birth announcement went public, the Westminster Abbey, where William and Kate were married in 2011, celebrated with song in accordance with royal tradition. As the public began betting on names for the royal baby, British bookmakers favored James, followed by Henry, George, Philip, Richard, and Alexander. Reported by a source, some other British families delayed naming their newborns at the time in hopes to either duplicate or avoid the new royal name. British Prime Minister David Cameron said, “It is an important moment in the life of our nation, but I suppose above all, it’s a wonderful moment for a warm and loving couple who got a brand new baby boy.” The baby’s birth made headlines around the world and blew up the feeds of social media everywhere, and other countries responded with warm welcomes. On Twitter, topics related to the royal baby jumped to the top of the trending list in the United Kingdom on Monday morning. Worldwide, hashtags such as #RoyalBabyBoy and #Will&Kate were trending later Monday. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also sent their congratulations. Miley Cyrus: Teen Idol? By Veronica Goldberg During the most recent 2013 MTV VMA awards, Miley Cyrus went on stage to shock all her fans. Miley Cyrus, our beloved Disney star, has taken a dramatic turn, apparently for the worse. Even though there has been notice for change in Miley’s appearance and music, nobody expected this performance. Miley took the stage with Robin Thicke by beginning her show with a duet song “Blurred Lines” after her own single, “We Can’t Stop”. She truly took us back to our childhood when she came out of a giant teddy bear, wearing a teddy bear one-piece. We were all then trying to cover our eyes when she began “twerking” and dancing with Robin Thicke. Not that we don’t all enjoy a nice, wacky performance once in awhile, but Miley took it too far. The stage was so crazy that no one knew where to even look. One person is dancing on the left side of the stage, then there are teddy bears circling together on the other side. Even though most people believe Miley took the attempt to change her image too far, some people do come to her defense. Some of the theories behind the reasoning of her performance is that she is doing this in a reaction to her recent breakup with former fiance,Liam Hemsworth. However, Sophomore Erin Cunneff is not impressed. She says her opinion on the jaw-dropping performance is that “it is repulsive and attention seeking.” Miley’s performance might of surprised us all, but she is who she is. She is free to be whoever she wants. Hopefully next time though she will keep it PG. 6 The Beacon Fall 2013 Living Typhoon Haiyan:How To Help By Codianne Gump This month Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines destroying thousands of peoples lives.
