Thank you for taking the time to let me share with you the results of our 2008-2009 fiscal year
activities, my first as President of the Farmingdale College Foundation.
Our active Board of Directors, comprised of prominent area business leaders from across the Long
Island region, has helped me create an exciting vision for the long term growth of our 501(c)(3)
not-for-profit Foundation to fulfill its mission to provide student scholarships, plus faculty and staff
support, not otherwise funded by New York State or through tuition. Against the backdrop of an
economic downturn of epic proportions, our Board has stepped forward with passionate, tireless
committee involvement resulting in record income. Thanks to the assistance of Farmingdale State
College President, Dr. W. Hubert Keen, and his Office of Development, led by Dr. Henry Sikorski,
along with key staff members, Charlene Russert, Jane Massimino and Patricia Greene, we exceeded
all expectations.
Our highlight was the granting of the greatest number of scholarships presented to students in the 98
year history of the College. Just a sampling of that effort:
110 Sand Company Scholarship
Estée Lauder Companies Scholarships
n Farmingdale State Presidential Scholarships
n
n
In addition, faculty and staff enrichment programs included:
Artists & Lecturers Programs
Writing in the Disciplines Program
n Green Energy Symposium
n
n
This year has been our most successful to date. Our most well known annual events, the Business
Hall of Fame Gala, Tech Island Golf Classic, and Horticulture Committee Garden Party were
smashing financial successes, while a good time was had by all in the process! Corporate and private
support through our Major Gifts Campaign was at an all time high, and we look forward to future
opportunities to further enhance private/public partnerships that support Farmingdale State.
As funding increases, the Board has not rested on its laurels and continues to make prudent fiscal
management decisions for investments and grant approvals – all the while maintaining steadfast
compliance with our legal, ethical, and moral responsibilities.
We can’t continue our success without your sharing in and supporting our vision. Thus, I welcome
anyone interested in joining our cause to drop me a note or stop by at the Office of Development in
Horton Hall on the College campus to learn more about ways to support the Foundation as we help
Farmingdale State College continue its growth as one of the region’s leading academic institutions.
Best personal regards,
Richard S. Overton, President
Farmingdale College Foundation

The margin of difference in our institutional accomplishments is owed, in no small part, to the support
received from private and non-state sources. Monies donated to the College are invested to provide
institutional excellence. Our mission – continued excellence in teaching, learning, scholarship,
research, and public service – is greatly enhanced in various ways by our many supporters.
In the past year, we have begun implementing physical plant and grounds projects that will, upon
completion over the next three years, bring great improvement to the facilities, and aesthetic appeal
to the campus. One major project, for instance, is the reconstruction of roadways, parking lots, and
grounds, which will not only transform and modernize our campus, but which will also change the
“face” of the College and better serve the needs of faculty, staff, and students. During the next year we
anticipate a renovation of the Library, the complete rehabilitation of Hale Hall, groundbreaking for the
new School of Business building, Campus Center, and the establishment of an Information Commons
Area to provide students a state-of-the-art information resource.
Support from Farmingdale State’s partners is always used wisely to assure that an excellent education is
continually available to more than 7,000 students annually. In 2009, the College received over 10,000
applications for its fall semester, while admission requirements, already the highest in the 100-year
history of the institution, continue to increase.
Our progress in 2008 – 2009 has been extraordinary. The Foundation attained another record level of
contributed support to the campus, exceeding its last year’s level. This support enabled us to provide:
n
n
n
Scholarships for exemplary students
Faculty development, ranging from research enhancements to the purchase of new
laboratory equipment and educational software, and the hosting of scholarly conferences
attended by hundreds
State of the art facilities and technology to enhance the
teaching/learning experience.
This year, we begin planning for the celebration of Farmingdale State’s Centennial in 2012. The
completion of a number of major physical plant projects during the next three years, and the
continuing advancement in the quality of our academic programs, will be a milestone in Farmingdale
State’s evolution. With the Foundation’s assistance, we will grow our assets for the benefit of current
and future students, faculty, and staff, and provide the best quality of education possible.
Having served for almost three years as President, I am exceptionally proud of the advances we have
made. The Foundation continues to be a key partner in enabling Farmingdale State College to
dramatically improve the lives of thousands of students annually.
Thank you for helping Farmingdale State College fulfill its mission!

22nd Annual Tech Island Golf Classic
The Foundation hosted its annual golf outing on Monday, June 29, 2009 at the Middle Bay Country Club in Oceanside, New York, and raised
over $116,000. Rudy Holesek, President of Apollo HVAC Corporation, served as honoree.
Apollo HVAC is a design/build mechanical contracting firm entering its 37th year in business, with offices on Long Island and New Jersey.
Mr. Holesek is also President of Advanced Control Solutions (ACS), a BMS and temperature controls company. Apollo HVAC and ACS
specialize in commercial, industrial, and institutional projects with emphasis on providing energy and comfort solutions, and the application of
“Green” technology. Apollo has twice received recognition for its participation and leadership in the LIPA Clean Energy Program.
Mr. Holesek is a board member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Long Island Chapter, the second vice president of Building
Owners’ & Managers’ Association (BOMA) Long Island, and a member of American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air-Conditioning
Engineers (ASHRAE). He has been involved in designing and building numerous Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED)
projects on Long Island and New Jersey.

2008 Business Hall of Fame Gala
The Foundation held its primary fundraiser on November 6, 2008 at Oheka Castle in Huntington, New York, and raised over $141,000. We
inducted three Honorees into the Business Hall of Fame: Patricia McMahon, Vice President & Deputy, Integrated Systems Eastern Region,
Northrop Grumman Corporation, James Bissett, President & CEO, Bissett Nursery Corp. and C. Kenneth Morrelly, President of Long Island
Forum for Technology (LIFT).
Honoree Patricia McMahon, as deputy to the sector vice president for Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems Eastern Region, helps lead
an organization comprising more than 4,000 employees in three major sites along the east coast and several others across the nation. One
of her day-to-day responsibilities is serving as Site Manager for the Bethpage facility. As such, she oversees major programs, including the
E-2 Hawkeye airborne early warning and battle management system, the Information Operations & Electronic Attack Integrated product
team (IPT), which develops advanced airborne electronic attack (AEA) systems. In this capacity she directs the work of approximately 600
employees working in New York; Florida; Maryland; and California.
Ms. McMahon is currently the chairman of the Town of Babylon Planning Board, former member of the Town of Babylon Zoning Board of
Appeals, and former chairman of the Town of Babylon Industrial Development Agency Board. She was the first woman to chair the Planning
and Industrial Development boards. Ms. McMahon also received the 2006 Town of Babylon Women in Government award. Ms. McMahon is
currently on the boards of the Long Island Software and Technology Network (LISTnet), Long Island Philharmonic, the Farmingdale College
Foundation, and is a director of the New York State Business Council. She received the LISTnet Diamond Award in 2006. In 2004 and 2006,
Ms. McMahon was chosen as one of Long Island’s 50 most influential women, and in 2007 was named to its Hall of Fame.
Honoree James Bissett started his career as a laborer at the age of 12, joining his father, James Bissett, Sr., in the family business. Inspired
by his father’s work ethic and mentoring, Mr. Bissett knew early on that he wanted to work with his father to build the family business into
an industry leader. By 1991, Mr. Bissett earned the top job as president and CEO of Bissett Nursery Corp. The company has grown into the
largest single location horticultural distribution center in the country. The company attributes this success to having the highest level of
customer service and the best staff in the industry.
In addition to expanding Bissett Nursery, Jim built and operates Treasure Cove Resort Marina, a commercial and residential rental property;
Bissett Equipment Corp., a banquet and catering company. His enthusiasm for family, commerce, adventure and love of the world’s oceans
drove him to a project that most said could not be financially viable. Atlantis Marine World opened in 2000 and was an immediate hit. Since
that time, Atlantis has entertained and educated over 3 million visitors, has expanded every year and was recently ranked No. 7 in the country
by Parents magazine.
Jim’s commitment to charitable organizations is done quietly, without fanfare, and is focused on children and animals; he has been involved
in the design and construction of the Town of Brookhaven Ecology Site & Animal Preserve and has generously supported the Riverhead
Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation’s rescue center and labs. Regional charities to which he contributes include Contractors for
Kids, Long Island Children’s Museum, Cooley’s Anemia Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America.
Honoree C. Kenneth Morrelly has been the President of Long Island Forum for Technology (LIFT). Previously, Mr. Morrelly spent 15 years in
Department of Defense Systems Design, and 15 years in the research, development, test, and evaluation of commercial and defense products.
Mr. Morrelly spent 30 years working in the high tech industry, 15 years at PRD/Harris and Hazeltine (now BAE), and 15 years in the research,
development and testing areas with Dayton T. Brown.
Mr. Morrelly has published numerous technical articles, has served on The National Governor’s Association, on the Defense Science Board,
and is a trustee of the Naval War College. He holds patents in the machine prognostics area, and has been reviewed in The New York Times,
The Wall Street Journal and other publications.
He has worked with Long Island’s Congressional delegation, and with New York State and the Federal government on regional industry and
technology issues affecting job growth and national defense, both locally and regionally.
Mr. Morrelly holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from C.W. Post, a M.S. from Long Island University; he also earned a M.S. in Business from
Columbia University.

2009 Garden Festival
The 4th annual Garden Festival at Farmingdale State College of New York was held on May 30 & 31, 2009 and was a huge success, raising
over $70,000 with more than 8,000 people in attendance. The festival was sponsored by the Farmingdale Horticulture Committee of the
Farmingdale College Foundation and coordinated by Foundation Board member, Maria Cinque. The major corporate sponsor of the event was
The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company; other corporate sponsors were Bartlett Tree Experts, Gutter Helmet, and Long Island Pulse.
Dr. Richard Iversen, curator of the gardens and professor of horticulture, conducted tours of the fabulous teaching gardens, while
Professor Paul Fogelberg offered landscaping advice to attendees. Music was donated by Professor Wayne Krush and his band –
The Lonesome Moonlight String Band.
Proceeds from the event benefit excellence in Farmingdale State College’s Horticulture Curriculum, and provide horticulture scholarships, and
further development of the Ornamental Horticulture Teaching Gardens.

F inancial Statements
Year Ended June 30, 2009
1. Background and summary of significant accounting policies:
Background:
The Farmingdale College Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation established under the laws of the State of New
York and is exempt from income taxes under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The general purpose of
the Foundation is to assist in advancing the welfare and development of the State University of New York College of
Technology at Farmingdale. This is to be accomplished by gifts, grants and bequests of money and property to provide
financial assistance to college faculty, students, staff and programs in a manner consistent with the educational policies of
the State University of New York.
Basis of accounting:
The Foundation maintains its books and records on the accrual basis of accounting. Accordingly, revenue is
recognized when earned and expenses are recognized when incurred.
Use of estimates:
The preparation of financial statements in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles requires
management to make estimates and assumptions that affect certain reported amounts and disclosures. Accordingly,
actual results could differ from those estimates.
Gifts and support:
The Foundation reports gifts of cash and other assets as either unrestricted, temporarily restricted, or permanently
restricted net assets.
Basis of presentation:
The Foundation presents its financial statements in accordance with Statement of Financial Accounting Standards
(“SFAS”) No. 117, Financial Statements of Not-For-Profit Organizations. SFAS No. 117 requires that the Foundation’s
financial statements distinguish between unrestricted, temporarily restricted and permanently restricted net assets
and changes in net assets, as follows:
Unrestricted net assets:
May be used at the discretion of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
Temporarily restricted net assets:
May be used in accordance with donor directives and restrictions. When a donor restriction expires, that
is, when a stipulated time restriction ends or purpose restriction is accomplished, temporarily restricted
net assets are reclassified to unrestricted net assets and reported in the statement of activities as net assets
released from restrictions.
Permanently restricted net assets:
Permanently restricted net assets are those resulting from contributions whose use by the Foundation is limited
by donor imposed restrictions that neither expire by the passage of time nor can be fulfilled or otherwise removed
by actions of the Board of Directors. Present permanently restricted net assets are comprised of endowed funds,
the income from which is to be used for scholarships.

Cash and cash equivalents:
Cash and cash equivalents represents cash held in banks, money market accounts held by investment brokers, and
short-term investments. The Foundation considers all short-term investments with maturity of three months or less
to be cash equivalents.
Expenses:
Expenses are allocated into functional categories depending upon the ultimate purpose of the expenditure. The
Foundation also presents a statement of cash flows in accordance with SFAS No. 117.
Fixed assets:
Fixed assets are recorded at cost or current fair value for donated items. Maintenance and repairs are expensed as
incurred. Depreciation is provided using the straight-line method over the estimated useful lives of the assets.
2.Concentration of credit and market risk:
The Foundation’s financial instruments consist of cash and accounts receivable. At June 30, 2009 and 2008, the
Foundation had funds deposited with various local banking institutions. One of the institutions protects deposits in
excess of federally insurance limits via repurchase agreements. At June 30, 2009 and 2008 the amounts in excess of
federally insured limits were $2,690,798 and $2,176,636 respectively.
3.Reclassifications:
The financial statements for 2008 have been restated to conform to the 2009 presentation format. This change did
not impact the 2008 change in net assets.
4.Investment held by SUNY:
Investment held by SUNY is comprised of pooled investable assets held by the University of Buffalo Foundation
with a market value of $21,587 as of June 30, 2009. Distributions from this portfolio will be received at a later but
unspecified point in time.
5.Short term investments:
The Foundation invests cash in excess of daily requirements in short-term investments. At June 30, 2009 and 2008
$500,880 and $5,784 respectively was deposited in 12 month certificates of deposit, and during the years earned
$5,096 and $238 respectively. The investments are held in two investment pools. One pool is for permanent
endowments and the other is for temporarily restricted accounts.
