There is so much going on that it’s hard to keep track. From the success of Canada’s best on the international scene to grass roots initiatives in some of the City’s more needy areas, it seems that there is something for everyone to enjoy. Tennis Canada tells us that participation in tennis in 2014 is up by more than 30%, which speaks to the impact that Milos, Eugenie and others are having on the image of our game and also explains why we were able to run 24 OTA-sanctioned junior tournaments across our clubs this year. Even amongst the adults we are seeing increased numbers in our leagues and the City Championships showed increased entries in four of the five categories. Please read on to discover more information on the programs that we have been running this year and discover how the more than $100,000 per year infusion of funds into our Capital Kids and Little Aces initiatives is building the foundation to sustain the popularity of tennis for generations to come.” 3 NCTA vision T he management gurus and leadership pundits are talking about 2020 Vision – everybody has to have a vision of what they want to achieve by the year 2020 (which isn’t that far away) and the NCTA is no exception. There is much to be proud of in terms of the tennis community in the national capital region but there are also areas for improvement and issues to concern us. The NCTA is first and foremost an association of tennis clubs so our primary objective is to create a - Vibrant and growing portfolio of tennis clubs. Can anyone remember when the last new tennis club was built in the NCR? Most readers are probably scratching their head. The reality is that we have not been growing the number of clubs and, in general, the membership of the existing clubs is getting older. As the baby boomers continue to age, there is a real risk that memberships will decline. Certain parts of our region are well served by tennis clubs but there are other areas where there are no clubs to be found – try looking to the east side of the Rideau River and south of the 417 and see what you can find (other than the OAC). Perhaps the biggest challenge to tennis clubs is technology. It used to be that people would start hitting a ball on a public park court with a friend but as soon as they wanted to find others to play with or get some lessons or play in a league or ladder or to be able to have guaranteed court time, then they would join a tennis club. Today it is possible to do all of these things via the internet and to continue to rely on public facilities. What then is the need to join a tennis club (and pay those membership fees)? We need to develop a new and compelling value proposition for people join a tennis club, create more demand amongst younger generations, and make tennis clubs more accessible. With this in mind, our v2020 (vision for 2020) includes: • Maintain all current clubs and create at least 3 new clubs of which one will be a year-round facility; • All tennis clubs in Ottawa are NCTA members through membership of the Ontario Tennis Association (and clubs in Quebec who wish to participate in NCTA programs are members of Tennis Quebec) and are equal partners & beneficiaries of the tennis community; • Both the Capital Kids and the Little Aces programs are maintained beyond their current three year basis with a sustainable funding basis; • The NCTA is seen as the voice of tennis clubs in the region (for example, in any dealings on behalf of the community with the City of Ottawa and the NCC); and, • The City Championships are recognized as the largest and most prestigious tournament in the region. 4 Introduction: Organized Tennis in the National Capital Region History of Organized Tennis in the National Capital Region [6] Former Association Presidents [7] Current NCTA Board of Directors [7] Current Program Coordinators [7] NCTA’s New Website [8] Tennis Family Tree [9] Tennis Clubs in the National Capital Region [10] (Photography by Fei Wu) 5 History of Organized Tennis in the National Capital Region T he game of lawn tennis was still in its infancy when it was first played on the grounds of Rideau Hall in the late 1870s. With the formation of the Ottawa Lawn Club in 1881 (now known as the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club), a base was laid for the development of organized tennis in the capital. The Canadian Lawn Tennis Association was founded in 1890 and in 1894 the Canadian Championships were held at the Otta- wa Club, which at that time was located on Cartier Square. Ottawa players competed in a Montreal based league from 1898 to 1902, and from 1903 to 1909 there was an inter-club league in the capital. City Championships were inaugurated in 1910. The game was played on grass until 1913, when the newly formed Rideau Lawn Tennis Club installed a number of clay courts. Ottawa Lawn Tennis Club Members, 1894 After the First World War, there was a great increase in the num(photo credit: Public Archives of Canada) ber of clubs and it was then that the present overall organi- zation had its beginning. The Ottawa District Lawn Tennis Association (ODLTA) was established in the summer of 1920. By the mid 1920s, it had some 40 member clubs. In 1910, the Sir Percy Lake Trophy, emblematic of the men’s singles City Championship and the Dr. F. C. Hanna and Birks Trophies for the Men’s Doubles Championship were first awarded. In 1925, the first Women’s Singles Championship was contested for the P. D. Ross Trophy and the first Mixed Doubles Championship was held for the John Murphy Trophy. The following year, 1926, the Hon. Charles Murphy Trophy, emblematic of the City Women’s Doubles Championship was awarded, completing all the City Championship events for which competitions are still held. Shortly after its formation, the ODLTA became affiliated with the Canadian Lawn Tennis Association and the Ontario Lawn Tennis Association until early in 1958, except for a brief period during the 1940s when it was affiliated with the Quebec association. In 1958 the ODLTA was granted “provincial” status by the national organization. Its name was changed to the National Capital Lawn Tennis Association in 1960 and the word “lawn” was dropped in 1979. The NCTA ceased to have “provincial” status in the fall of 1988. In 1991, it became an autonomous region of the Ontario Tennis Association. The ODLTA set up an inter-club league in 1922. It had three main sections designated A, B and C, until 1966, when the present four-division arrangement was adopted. In 2004, the now called Mixed League adopted a Box system to promote more competitive matches. Intermediate championships (for players under the “A” level) were established in 1934. The present Masters’ competition, originally for men 40 and over, began in 1960 when a trophy was given in memory of Jean Rinfret, a colourful player who was fatally injured in a skiing accident. The Canadian National Tennis Championships were held at the Rideau Tennis and Squash Club in 1977, at the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club from 1978 to 1981 and again at the Rideau from 1982 to 1984. For the past few years, the Rideau Tennis Club has hosted the Ontario Open Championships. For many years the Rideau Tennis Club was the home of the Canadian Open & Closed Junior Championships. In 1949, the late E. C. Condon established a separate junior tournament, emblematic of the junior city championship. From 2002 to 2004, the Canadian Under 14 National Championships were held at the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club. 6 Former Association Presidents Year 2014 – present 2010 – 2013 2009 – 2010 2004 – 2008 2000 – 2003 1998 – 1999 1994 – 1997 1990 – 1993 1988 – 1989 1985 – 1987 1983 – 1984 1980 – 1982 1978 – 1979 1977 1976 1975 1973 – 1974 1971 – 1972 1970 President Year President Philip Johnson Sean Sweeney Bruce Ramsay Peter Sutcliffe Danielle Smith Ann Laubstein Andrew Verney Fred Gormley Fred Bossons Michael Sims V. The NCTA is currently using OrbitHub’s platform to host its new website (https://tennis.orbithub.com/NCTA), and to run inter-club leagues. Some members may already be familiar with the company’s former website, TennisOrbit (www.tennisorbit.com), launched several years ago with the goal of providing tennis players, particularly public court players, the opportunity to find partners, play in organized ladders and tournaments, as well as start and manage their own tennis groups. TennisOrbit has been very successful in providing a home for tennis players (http://www.tennisorbit.com/Ottawa+Ontario+CA), and we are now taking this success and launching an improved version. OrbitHub will be faster, more functional, mobile friendly, and easier to use than before. Whether you are a player looking for a partner or an organizing body running a sporting event, OrbitHub offers a wide range of services for all tennis enthusiasts and organizers. OrbitHub’s co-founders, Brooke Stephens and Mona Hafez, plan to launch a fully functional website in spring 2015. It will include modules to manage leagues, ladders, tournaments, payments, court bookings and member registrations, as well as a social network to facilitate communication between members of the tennis community. In preparation for next year’s official launch, OrbitHub would like to invite anyone to create a free account (https://tennis.orbithub.com) to test the site and share their feedback ([email protected]). Over 3 years, Capital Kids will introduce the sport of tennis to over 3,750 children, providing an outlet for regular physical activity. The lessons will take place on public tennis courts in areas which we have designated as Tennis Hubs. A Tennis Hub encompasses: public tennis courts (many of which are currently underutilized) and at least 2 nearby elementary schools. Many of the hubs will be created in neighbourhoods in which social/economic challenges make tennis an inaccessible sport, ie: low-income areas with high concentrations of immigrants/New Canadians, low levels of physical activity, and high unemployment, particularly among youth. Four Tennis Hubs will receive programming in the first year, with an additional 4 hubs being added each year until 12 total hubs are delivering tennis programming by Year 3. This initiative, funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, represents a collaborative effort by the Ontario Tennis Association, the City of Ottawa and the NCTA to provide all children with more affordable and accessible tennis programs. First year Results Capital Kids was a great success in its first season. Programs ran at 4 different locations across Ottawa – Sheffield Glen Park in the East end, Judge Park in the West end, Alta Vista School in Ottawa South, and Jules Morin/Bordeleau Park in Lowertown, from June 1st to September 28th. In total, 770 kids registered and participated in the program. Lessons were offered between 3 and 5 times per week (depending on the location) with over 80% of kids playing twice per week. Across all 4 locations, approximately 70 % of registrants were visible minorities, of which many were New Canadians. The program provided equipment for all the coaches/participants, and racquets and balls were available for purchase at a subsidized rate. Over 150 racquets were purchased over the course of the summer. New in 2015 We plan on expanding the program to up to 8 locations in total with a goal to reach over 1700 kids. We will hire more coaches/instructors and engage local volunteer coaches to help create capacity and develop skills in each community. We plan on introducing more competitive playing opportunities for our Capital Kids by offering more Rogers Rookie Tour events at local OTA clubs. Creating more tournaments will not only help to integrate these new juniors into the Long Term Athletic Development (LTAD) pathway, but will help create a connection with their local member clubs which can facilitate playing and further coaching opportunities. A $10 membership subsidy is provided to any Capital Kid to put towards joining an OTA club for the first time. 14 2014 Capital Kids Infographic 15 16 Program Coordintor Fei Wu, Program Coordinator, was hired in early May and worked tirelessly for 3 weeks with John WinsPurdy to launch the Capital Kids Program. She produced and managed a website(www.capitalkidstennis. com) with full online registration, built and managed social media, prepared promotional marketing material, and coordinated the program. I t is a tennis program that provides participants with the opportunity to combine practice and play, with a focus on skill development through match play. Games are played using the Kid’s Tennis format, which includes appropriate equipment (based on age and skill level) with corresponding court sizes. The minor league is structured in four divisions, which are (1) Red Ball, ½ Court (rec- ommended ages 6-8) (2) Orange Ball, ¾ Court (recommended ages 8-10) and (3) Green Ball, Full Court (recommended ages 10-12) and (4) Green or Regular Ball Full Court (recommended ages 12-16). Players are placed on teams in a manner that ensures teams are of similar strength and the format ensures that players play matches against others of similar ability. Scores are kept and the results are counted in the “regular season” towards a team’s overall score to ensure that every participant’s efforts are rewarded. The league season ends with the playoffs, a championship and an award ceremony. Why is the league different from traditional lesson programs? Historically tennis has been a sport where it is perceived that a fairly high level of skill is required to compete. This often led parents to choose lessons as the method to get their child involved in tennis. This resulted in many children not getting the opportunity to play long after being introduced to the sport, the general feeling being “they aren’t good enough to play yet.” This house league concept provides the participant the opportunity to play right away using Progressive Tennis and be part of a team. The house league introduces tennis as a game, where playing as part of a team is the main focus. Children learn as they play and have fun while improving. As soon as they can start the point with a feed, they can play. This can be accomplished in the first few weeks of the league before official match play begins. Once match play begins the practice portion of each day of the league provides children with basic tips on how to improve their game for match play. Little Aces League in Ottawa Little Aces was launched at Tennis Centre West Ottawa (TCWO) with an event seeing approximately 200 kids from 4 local schools on April 24th with media, OTA staff, 8 coaches from across the City, 2 City councillors and City staff present. This boosted awareness of the league in the community and set the stage for a successful pilot in the spring. Follow the link below to see the Little Aces Ottawa launch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nx5OegQMxM League play at Tennis Centre West Ottawa (TCWO), Spring 2014 18 League Information Pilot League at TCWO (May 4-June 22, Sundays 3:004:30): 36 participants between the ages of 5-10. (22 on the red courts and 14 on the orange courts) TCWO Fall League (September 28 –December 14, Sundays 2:00-3:30) has 39 total participants between the ages of 5-10. There are 23 on the red courts and 16 on the orange courts. Carleton Fall League (October 19 – December 14, Sundays 3:00-5:00). 40 participants between the ages of 6-12. (16 on the red courts, 16 on the orange courts and 8 on the green courts) Little Aces league at Carleton Tennis Centre, Fall 2014 OAC Fall League (September 12-December 21, Saturdays 9:00-2:30): the OAC has re-structured its introductory programs to incorporate league-style play. Age groups are divided up so instead of hosting one big league there are many smaller groups which participate at different times. A total of 136 players are enrolled in their introductory programs. Our goal in 2015 is to have 3 indoor leagues running Winter (Jan-Mar), Spring (Apr-June), and Fall (SeptDec) sessions at TCWO, Carleton, and OAC. In addition to the indoor leagues, outdoor community clubs that have enough juniors (minimum 16 participants) to establish a league are being considered. Possible sites include Barrhaven Tennis Club and St. James Tennis Club. Please contact John Wins-Purdy if your club is interested in running a Little Aces League. Little Aces in Schools Program Coordinator: John Wins-Purdy Head Coaches: John Wins-Purdy and Alex Harea L ittle Aces in Schools provides an opportunity for children in elemen- tary schools across Ottawa to participate in Kids Tennis, a method of introducing kids to tennis using size and age appropriate equipment, which makes the game accessible and fun for kids. Through the program, students learn about the importance of regular physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. Our goal is to attract new participants at the grassroots level and help surrounding communities raise awareness about opportunities for students to play. We engage local OTA member clubs by encouraging their coaches, instructors, or volunteers to deliver school-based programming with the Little Aces’ coach to build a direct connection between their club and the local schools. In addition, the Little Aces’ coach can provide in-situ training to ensure that each member club, staff or volunteers is confident in delivering quality gym-based tennis lessons. To enhance and broaden the potential impact of the program, Little Aces makes training available to teachers who can participate in workshops to become comfortable instructing the program in their schools. Equipment and lesson plans will be made available for schools that are interested in participating. Between January and June, tennis was introduced to approximately 4,700 kids age 5-12 in 31 different 19 schools across the Ottawa region with 14 of the 31 schools scheduling 2 or more sessions with their classes. Little Aces’ coaches John Wins-Purdy and Alex Harea assisted in establishing connections between 8 member clubs and their local schools either by hosting class lessons on club courts or delivering tennis in school gyms and schoolyards with club staff or volunteers. A total of 5 head pros, 16 instructors, and 7 volunteers from different clubs participated in the program this year. The vast majority of participating clubs, as well as the Capital Kids program, reported a positive increase in the membership and programs as a result of engaging local schools. In 2015, the program will aim to reach at least 4,000 kids across Ottawa. It will focus on communities where there are local OTA member clubs and where Capital Kids programming is located in order to boost membership and participation numbers. New Kids Tennis Nutrition books will be handed out to all participants, which educates kids on why it’s important to eat well and how to eat well in order to stay healthy and strong. We will also encourage teachers and principals to promote local clubs and programs on their monthly newsletters. Ottawa-Gatineau Junior Competitive Interclub League Program Coordinator: John Wins-Purdy Coordinating Directors: Tony Roth (OAC), Geoff Pearce (TCWO), Zhenya Kondratovski (Rideau), Sylvain Souligny (La Sporthèque du Hull) and John Wins-Purdy (Carleton) T he Ottawa-Gatineau Junior Competitive Interclub League was piloted in winter/spring of this year in the U10 category between 4 clubs – La Sporthèque du Hull, TCWO, OAC and Carleton. It featured a team of 4 players (girls and boys mixed) from each club playing every week in a competitive format which included singles and doubles. Each club had a roster of 7-8 players on average, and overall, the league had 30 players in total with 16 players participating each week. Team coaching was also implemented, which allows every team to have one coach on court during changeovers and between matches to help players with their technique, tactics and psychology. This fall we expanded and offer a U14 division. Again, the same 4 clubs are participating in U10 and the Rideau Tennis Club has joined in for the U14 league. In total we will have 32 kids participating every week and over 60 kids will participate over the course of the fall session. Parents and kids really enjoyed the team format from winter 2014 and we hope to build on the success of the pilot and, in working with the Directors from all the indoor facilities in the Ottawa-Gatineau Region, expand these team-based leagues as much as possible in the future. Thank you to the many parent volunteers who helped organize our teams and of course, for giving up your Saturday evenings for this competition! We believe that providing a pathway for all our juniors, which includes some form of team competition, is essential for building interest and promoting play at all levels, from beginner/recreational to competitive. I think Jason Duggan, the father of Dermott Duggan, a player for OAC in the U10 league, captured it best: “For Dermott it has been a tremendously beneficial experience. He loves coming out every Saturday to be a part of his team. He wins some and he loses some but he always has fun. Being a part of a team is a great but rare opportunity in an individual sport like this. On the one hand it takes some of the pressure off of the individual and at the same time there is a positive pressure to perform well to support your team. I find it balances out really nicely. Every Saturday I see all of the kids from both teams walk away with smiles on their faces.” 20 OTA Junior Competitive Circuit in Ottawa Circuit Coordinator: John Wins-Purdy OTA Tournament Manager: Andrew Chapell T he competitive circuit saw an infusion of more events held across a larger number of private and community clubs this season. 1252 participants competed in 23 events citywide at 10 different venues compared with 918 participants at 4 different venues in 2013. The majority of events were in the provincial 3-star (3***) category in which players can obtain significant ranking points. The Roman Cup was another great success this season, expanding its participation from 250 competitors to 323 this season. It is now the single largest junior tournament in Ontario and remains a National Qualifying Event for Tennis Canada. See the table below which compares tournament registrations in 2014 to 2013 by age category. U8 2014 2013 Difference % Difference 0 0 0 U9 6 0 6 U10 U12 U14 U16 U18 TOTAL 125 10 115 1250% 314 263 51 19% 451 278 173 62% 131 184 -53 -40% 245 183 62 34% 1252 918 334 36% We can see a strong increase in the U10, U12, U14 and U18. That being said, the junior circuit here in Ottawa suffers from a lack of events for new players to the game. To fill this gap, we plan on expanding the number of “Rogers’ Rookie Tour” and 2-star competitive series events. With the influx of new players from Capital Kids and other new players from across the city, we will strive to provide ample playing opportunities for rookies in order to boost their confidence and interest in pursuing tennis at a more competitive level. If your club is interested in hosting a sanctioned OTA event securing your spot on the Ottawa tournament schedule, please contact [email protected]. Featured Players Malik Bhatnagar (15 years old), Barrhaven Tennis Club and ACE Tennis Academy Malik is and has been a long time member of the Barrhaven Tennis Club, growing up and learning to play tennis there from a young age. He started playing for fun at 6 or 7 years old and at the age of 10 year started playing local NCTA and OTA tournaments. He fell in love quickly with the sport and credits his parents, Samir and Kathy and the support of Tony Milo and Tony's coaching staff at Carleton Tennis for his early successes to date. Locally, Malik has won over 40 OTA, NCTA and local tournament championships (including City Junior Championships and the Adult Mixed title with Petra Januskova in 2013). Regionally, he is 3-time Provincial Champion in boys Under 14 with 1 Singles and 2 Doubles Titles in 2013 and Provincial Singles Finalist in U16 in 2014. He has also had success on the National level, winning the National Doubles Championships Under 14 in 2013, and was the National Under 14 Singles Finalist in 2013. He is currently in his 2nd year of training at the ACE Tennis Academy in Burlington under Canadian Tennis Legend Pierre "The Bear" Lamarche and Doug Burke. Malik is currently the top ranked junior tennis Malik Bhatnagar (photography by Soo Hum) player from Ottawa. 21 Corina Spasojevic (12 years old), Ottawa Athletic Club Corina started playing tennis when she was about 4 years old in her parent’s kitchen and garage. While her dad was feeding her balls in the garage, she loved nothing more than to hit the ball as hard as she could, while aiming to hit him in the head! Her mother, Valentina, would come home from work and hear bang-bang on the garage door, every night. At age of six, she started lessons at the OAC with her current coach, Ben Etheve-Meek. Corina is still training happily with Ben, who she thinks is the awesomest coach ever (her words!). Corina thinks the game is awesome, and when asked why she loves it, she said, “I just love to play it.” She has always loved playing with balls, even as a baby, and the first time she hit a baby ball with a baby tennis racquet, her eyes lit up and she said AGAIN! That was it, she was hooked! This season, Corina finished 7th in U12 outdoor Nationals, won the Ace Academy Superseries U12, a highly competitive tournament held in Burlington, and was also the finalist in U14. She also won an Under 12 National Selection event last summer. She played the Junior Orange Bowl in Florida last December, one of the largest junior tournaments in the world and is preparing to play it again. Corina is currently ranked 5th in the Under 12 National rankings and continues to train and play at the OAC under the guidance of her coach, Ben. Owen Dunn (10 years old), Carleton Tennis Centre and St. James Tennis Club Owen’s Mom says that when she dropped him off for his first summer camp at St. James Tennis Club – he let go of her hand and ran out onto the court, not looking back. It was as if he was home. After working his way to the top of the afterschool lesson groups in one season, at 9 years old, Owen’s passion for tennis was fervent. He completely dove into competitive tennis by enrolling in year round coaching at Carleton, playing six days a week (he would have played seven days but he wasn’t allowed!) and competing in over 20 tournaments across Ontario from Sudbury to Toronto in 2013. In September 2013, Owen was named to the Ontario Provincial U10 Team where “[t]he aim of the Provincial Program is to regroup top players from around the province to assist in the development of U10 and U12 international player competencies and norms. Striving to acquire international level competencies at a young age is a key area for player development in Canada.” (tenniscanada.com) Owen’s dream of playing for his country came true this May when he was Owen Dunn one of four boys selected by Tennis Canada to represent the Canadian Ju(photography by Clive Cohen/ nior Davis Cup team at the Americas Team Games in Boca Raton, Florida Tennisprints.com) from August 8 to 14. Owen and his teammates were given the opportunity to compete against the best Under 11 players from United States, Mexico and other Central and South American countries. Owen faired very well, winning 4 of his 5 matches against these top international competitors! The Americas Team Games event gives the top players from the Americas (North, Central and South America) and the Caribbean an opportunity to train and compete for their country with each other 22 and interact with children from different countries and cultures. Owen is currently the highest ranked player for his age in Ontario. Instructor Certification Program Coordinator: Jay Neill Head Course Facilitator: Arthur Cuenco T he Tennis Canada Instructor Certification course is held every year at the OAC during the last weekend in April and first weekend in May. The course filled up for the 5th year in a row with 24 participants, mostly enthusiastic teenagers, looking to learn the basics of instruction, progressive tennis, and hoping to get a job in the Ottawa tennis community. Participants hailed mostly from Ottawa but also from Kingston, Perth, and Montreal. The course was once again led by Coach and Physiotherapist, Arthur Cuenco, and assisted by John Wins-Purdy. In 2015, instructors looking to volunteer at their local OTA club or volunteer in the Capital Kids Program can get half of their certification cost covered by the Raise the Net Program. For more information about the course, please contact Jay Neill, Regional Membership and Development at the OTA, at [email protected]. New Ottawa Smash Cage A new Ottawa Smash Cage was brought to the region and an agreement was formed with local tennis retailer, Kunstadt Sports, who will transport and facilitate it at club and city events. The Smash Cage is a giant, inflatable castle equipped with a radar gun ready to test the speed of your serve or any other shot your heart desires! It’s a great addition to any large event like a tournament, BBQ, social, or special event that your club holds. Since its arrival in August, it has been used at 5 different club events with very positive feedback from both juniors and adults who participated. Please contact [email protected] to book the Smash Cage for your event in 2015. The Smash Cage can be rented free of charge by OTA clubs and by NCTA clubs for $250. 23 Kids’ Tennis Equipment Program Coordinator: John Wins-Purdy W hether it was a coach from a community club who needed a new Kids’ Tennis net, or a school that wanted to start a new tennis program, this program is designed to reach those who are ready to start a program but lack the proper equipment.. This season the OTA distributed close to $11,000 worth of Kids’ Tennis equipment across the region to various Community Clubs, Private Clubs, the City of Ottawa Parks and Recreation, Little Aces Leagues, Elementary Schools and Community Centres. This amounts to over 3,000 low compression balls, 450 racquets, and 40 nets. In addition, approximately $14,000 was invested in equipment for the Capital Kids program, which means the total investment in the Ottawa region in Kids’ Tennis equipment in 2014 was approximately $25,000! We are proud to say that equipment is no longer the limiting factor for many deciding whether a Kids’ Tennis program can be run. That being said, we know that many clubs (and the majority of elementary schools) still don’t have access to this specialized equipment. In 2015, we will continue to provide equipment to coaches, clubs, schools, and other organizations that are enthusiastic and ready to implement a Kids’ Tennis program. (photography by Soo Hum) 24 Wheelchair Tennis Instructor Workshop K ai Schrameyer, Tennis Canada National Coach for Wheelchair Tennis Development and 3 Time Paralympic Medalist, travelled from Vancouver to deliver a dynamic workshop on Wheelchair Tennis. The course was held at the OAC on April 5th with 4 coaches, 5 instructors and 1 wheelchair athlete from the region participating. The Wheelchair Tennis Instructor Workshop is a Tennis Canada initiative designed to provide interested people (currently certified Instructors and Coaches, Recreational Therapists, etc.) with the knowledge to teach wheelchair tennis to introductory players. Participants learned how to adapt their coaching to systematically develop beginning wheelchair players. They will be able to help players learn the fundamentals of rallying, starting a point with serve & return, playing the game and most importantly, chair mobility. The course was very well received and a huge thanks to Kai for making the trip and delivering a great workshop! 25 City of Ottawa Report 26 (Photography by Fei Wu) City of Ottawa Tennis Programs Parks and Recreation Portfolio Manager: Ward Cosman Program Coordinator: Peter Speiss Registered Programs Session Winter Spring Summer Fall Total 2013 6 279 129 65 479 2014 30 252 146 114 542 Difference 500% -10% 13% 75% 12% 2014 200 200 Difference 55% 55% Summer Camps Session Summer Total 2013 129 129 Registered Programs and Camps Session 2013 2014 Difference Registered Program 479 542 15% Camps 129 200 55% Total 608 742 22% Notes on Charts • Little Aces was first implemented in the Spring of 2014. • This Fall has been the biggest pay off in terms of numbers. Since the City has partnered with indoor complexes, the Fall numbers have skyrocketed compared to 2013. C ollaboration between the NCTA, OTA, and the City has never been better. We saw a dramatic increase in participation in existing and new City program in association with various community centres, schools and on public tennis courts in 2014 . Workshops and training were provided to many City coaching staff in order to prepare them for new Little Aces programs where the focus has shifted from purely instruction to learning through play. The City is an instrumental partner in the Capital Kids program by providing the access to public courts through permitted use and storage facilities to house the equipment. We look forward to strengthening our partnership with the City in 2015 in an expanding Capital Kids programming, facilitating new City programs at indoor and outdoor facilities, and developing our vision for 2020 in creating 3 new community clubs, one of which is an indoor facility. T he Orléans Tennis Club has seen a significant increase in its junior enrolment this 2014 season. Our juniors participate in a free Friday night lesson included in their membership, which runs throughout the summer. Many of the juniors are playing in our Sunday afternoon league to gain some match play experience. We also offer a junior drop in, but so far it has not been a big hit, so we’re looking at making some changes for next season. Our half-day summer camps are currently running, with excellent enrolment as well. We have had positive feedback from several parents, and many campers who return for several weeks throughout the summer. We have two volunteers who are helping out with camps this summer, and two more volunteers who are younger and will be helping out with other events. The local schools have profited from having our experienced instructors give free tennis clinics in the spring. John Wins-Purdy has helped out with many of these sessions. We ran a program at Avalon Public School with the help of their Physical Education teacher, offering five evening sessions and were pleasantly surprised to have a turnout of 55 enthusiastic children each week. We have yet to see these numbers grow our membership with only 2 juniors joining from Avalon, but providing opportunities and building awareness are important steps for progress. Lastly, for the first time this year, the Orléans Tennis Club hosted a Rogers Rookie Tour event. We had 15 children participate in U12 and U16 categories. Staff and volunteers were impressed with the participants sportsmanship, something instructors have made a priority in their tennis instruction. Considering it was our first tournament we can forgive our club’s lack of junior representation in the tournament. It’s a start and we thank the four campers and one member who took on the challenge. NCTA: Why do you think there was an increase? LYNNE NINA: Last year we had three junior members, this year we have 17. Those numbers do not include the kids who are part of family memberships. If we include family juniors we have 38 in total. This is the third year that we have offered school clinics and also have had the schools post some information in their school newsletters. I think that the increase is a result of these initiatives. NCTA: How does your Sunday afternoon league work? 29 LYNNE NINA: We don’t charge a fee for our junior or adult leagues. Adult and junior leagues are run the same way. The member indicates that they are interested in league play. Every Thursday, our manager sends out an email asking if the member is available that coming Sunday. He sets the matches based on those whoare available, and emails them back with their opponent’s name and time of the match by Saturday. Although this is a little labour intensive, we have found that people don’t like to commit to a 6 or 8 week league session and very rarely do any missed matches get made up. This way, you have flexibility from week to week. We have approximately 8 regular juniors coming out to play. NCTA: What changes will you consider making for the junior drop in? LYNNE NINA: I think that we will probably re-name the drop-in, to make it more of a next step after lessons. Maybe call it “Match Play”. Our staff is on hand, so the kids can have someone helping them learn to play an actual set. We will have to brainstorm this over the winter with our junior director, but I think we can make something happen. However, most parents who bring their children to the Friday night lessons tell me that they are not looking for more than that once a week lesson…. NCTA: Can you provide some more info about the operation of your camps? LYNNE NINA: Our club pro is involved and on court during the camp. She ran our free lessons in May, where we recruit many campers and members. The marketing and communication with parents is done by me, and our club manager. Besides our club pro, we have six certified Level 1 instructors who help with camp (we try to keep a 7:1 ratio). We have two volunteers, who are previous campers. This is how we keep our club community-based. All of our current instructors were campers at one time, and then volunteers who then took their certification course. Three of our instructors have been working with us for many years, and the other three are here for their second summer. Sixty three tennis players came out to play for two hours in a round robin organized by Jana. The NCTA brought in the Smash Cage and players could test their serve speed and have a chance at winning a prize if they could guess the approximate speed of their serve. All this was followed by a delicious dinner of Chicken Dijonaise Gratin with Horiatiki and Campagna salads accompanied by mini white and mini red potato salad served on the OTLBC balcony. Bruce Ramsay, the NCTA Secretary, entertained the dinner guests with two challenging tennis trivia quizzes. Each table became a trivia quiz team with prizes going to the members of the two winning tables. After dinner Jana announced the winners of the summer single and team league divisions with prizes going to the lucky winners. The evening ended with Phil Johnson, the NCTA President, presenting Jana with a thank you gift for all her amazing work. This was the last year for Jana as the league coordinator. Thank you Jana for the great job you did all these years. You will be missed! We’ll see you again on the courts!
