www.anzbloodstocknews.com Monday, December 13th 2010 BEAUTY FLASH TAKES MILE HONOURS 8 FOR RESET New Zealand-bred son of Golan in career best victory Yourein (3 g It’s You, by Celtic Swing) became the eighth stakeswinner worldwide for Reset when winning yesterday’s Great Northern Guineas Prelude (Listed). Amarina Farm will consign a Snitzel halfbrother to Yourein as lot 250 at the Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast in January. GOLD EDITION PLATE Following the abandonment of last Saturday’s Eagle Farm meeting, Racing Queensland issued a statement regarding the Gold Edition Plate that was lost at the weekend. As this race is a direct lead-up to the $150,000 Vo Rogue Plate scheduled for Sunday December 26, Racing Queensland Limited has taken the decision to transfer this race to the Doomben meeting scheduled for this Saturday, December 18. Beauty Flash finishes the year on a high New Zealand-bred Beauty Flash ensured the year finished on a high for Windsor Park Stud, writes Darryl Sherer. Having enjoyed the Group 1 successes of High Chaparral (Ire) offspring So You Think and Descarado through the Melbourne Spring Carnival, Beauty Flash provided another Windsor Park shuttle-sire Golan with his second Group 1 winner when the New Zealand-bred five-year-old scored a career best win in the Hong Kong International Mile (Gr 1,1600m) at Sha Tin yesterday. The race had its share of sensation when hot favourite and reigning Hong Kong champion miler – Able One (Cape Cross) was withdrawn at the barriers by order of the stewards who deemed the son of Cape Cross (Ire) to be lame. Ph: +64 (0)2755 62785 HONK KONG JOCKEY CLUB Once the barriers opened, Sight Winner (Faltaat) and Douglas Whyte were allowed to set a pedestrian early pace with Beauty Flash perfectly positioned just behind and when Gerald Mosse asked the big chestnut to quicken in the straight the answer was immediate, Beauty Flash going clear 200m out. French challenger Royal Bench (Whipper) ran on well from near last turning in to get within three quarters of a length at the finish, with compatriot Sahpresa another half length behind in third. “It’s all a matter of timing,” said Cruz afterwards. “Sometimes you can’t push a horse too hard when you’re riding him or training him, but sometimes you know when to ask him and he’d been so well in SHAMASH TO MELBOURNE Promising sprinter Shamash has been transferred to trainer Bart Cummings’ Melbourne stable. The four-year-old son of Shamardal (USA) was impressive in winning at Rosehill on November 13 and has been sent to Melbourne because of the drier tracks following the persistent rain in Sydney in recent weeks. HINCHINBROOK TO MOODY Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) has been transferred to Peter Moody at Caulfield from Gerald Ryan at Rosehill. Ryan said the owners of Hinchinbrook are wanting to target the major Melbourne sprint races in the autumn with the three-year-old. [email protected] Monday, December 13th, 2010 JJ The Jet Plane (spotted hat) in a sprint showdown the last few weeks I was very confident that he must finish in the first three.” “I felt the horse pick up by himself and he ran on like a superstar,” said Mosse who was completing his full house of international events in Hong Kong. “I knew Beauty Flash had won a Group one going forward so we took a good start and even though I couldn’t actually lead, I was happy to be camped on the speed. The more I asked of him, the more he gave.” “I’d like to take this horse overseas to race,” said Cruz, whose faith in Beauty Flash which had persuaded him to bid for the Yasuda Kinen in the summer was finally being repaid. “Take him to Dubai, Japan. Some of the biggest mile races in the world.” Olivier Peslier was delighted with the effort of Royal Bench. “We were pushed wide on the home turn and yet the horse finished like a train. It shows how good he is and I think his connections will have good fun with him in the next few months. I hear he could be headed to Dubai.” Sold for $65,000 as a yearling at the 2007 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale, Beauty Flash (5 g Golan – Wychwood Rose, by Volksraad) has now won nine of his 18 starts in New Zealand and Hong Kong. Winner of the 2000 Guineas and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Golan is listed as a National Hunt stallion in 2011 on the Coolmore website. J J THE JET PLANE EDGES ROCKET MAN IN SPRINT SHOWDOWN J J The Jet Plane (Jet Master) scored a memorable win for South Africa when he nosed out Singapore’s pride and joy Rocket Man (Viscount) in a thrilling finish to the Hong Kong International Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m). Billed as one of the best 1200m races run ADVERTISING. [email protected] 2 COVER STORY CONT. ANZ HONK KONG JOCKEY CLUB anywhere in the world this year by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the finish had the huge crowd on their collective feet as JJ The Jet Plane, Rocket Man and Sacred Kingdom (Encosta De Lago) winner of two of the last three runnings of the Sprint - were driving for the finish inside the final 200m. At the line J J The Jet Plane finally asserted over a gallant Rocket Man - who once again battled on with extreme gameness only to find himself denied in an international G1 for the fourth time in a row, with the margin of the only four defeats he has suffered in his lifetime totalling less than a length between them – by a short-head. Sacred Kingdom lost nothing in defeat, the seven-year-old finishing three quarters of a length back in third with the young Hong Kong horse Let Me Fight (Hawk Wing) fourth. Victory completed a massive turnaround in fortune for JJ The Jet Plane who ended a sequence of 11 consecutive victories for Australian-breds in Hong Kong’s premier sprint. Last year he raced in Britain without any major success but a return to his homeland proved the cure and yesterday was his third straight-win at Group 1 level. Trainer Michael ‘Lucky’ Houdalakis deserves most of the credit for the transformation as the horse seemed to have left his career behind him this time last year. Jockey Piere Strydom’s great strength in the finish also played a major part in today’s success and he remains unbeaten on JJ The Jet Plane in eight races. “We had a great run,” said Strydom. “He was always travelling. When we eased out on straightening I was happy to go after Rocket Man because I didn’t want him to get away. My bloke gave me everything and we got there on the line. It’s brilliant to win and I really want to thank the owners for being loyal to me as there’s plenty of good jockeys here they could have chosen.” EDITORIAL. [email protected] 3 Monday, December 13th, 2010 ANZ The winner of the English and Irish Oaks, the Ed Dunlop-trained three-year-old scored another Group 1 win in last month’s Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup (Gr 1, 2200m) in Japan. Yesterday Snow Fairy came with a big run in the straight, having been from near last on the home turn, to run past the John Moore trained Irian (Tertullian) 100 metres out and win going away. “All credit to my staff who have worked so hard on an amazing day for the yard,” Dunlop said afterwards. “I thought it was too close between races to run her after Japan and she didn’t gallop for seven weeks. Snow Fairy completing an amazing year at the Hong Kong International Cup HONK KONG JOCKEY CLUB “To do it against the colts for the first time in her life puts her down as an exceptional horse, there can be no doubt over that. She will definitely stay in training, no question, and you never know, she could be back here next year.” Felix Coetzee hid his disappointment well after coming so close on Rocket Man. “What can I say. We just have to accept it. Thought we had it but he’s run so well again.” For winning jockey Ryan Moore, who has enjoyed his Hong Kong stay, taking out the International Jockeys’ series at Happy Valley last Wednesday, the win set the seal on a big year. Brett Prebble was proud of Sacred Kingdom. “Fantastic effort again. It’s hard to stay on top forever. He had his chance but just died on his run in last bit. He probably can’t quite push himself through the pain barrier like he once could but he ran super. There’s plenty of good domestic Group 1’s at least left in him.” “On the top of the bend I thought I had no chance but she quickened up so well and is an absolute machine to do what she did,” he said. “They went fast into the first turn and then steadied. She has such a brilliant turn of foot. You would struggle to find too many fillies that could have done what she did.” Australia’s representative Ortensia (Testa Rossa) was far from disgraced in finishing fifth, closing at the finish after turning for home some ten lengths off the lead. “Great run. When they backed off the speed mid-race it didn’t advance her cause,” jockey Craig Williams said. “She found the line terrific.’ MASTERY SCORES FOR GODOLPHIN SNOW FAIRY QUEEN OF THE CUP Enjoying a textbook ride from Frankie Dettori, Mastery raced in fourth place, just off the pace set by Mighty High (Peintre Celebre), to the home turn. Allowed to roll up to challenge turning in, Mastery accelerated away from his rivals to score unchallenged by two and English filly Snow Fairy (Intikhab) completed an amazing year to win the Hong Kong International Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). He probably will gain in speed with time and should prevail under more testing conditions. He gave me everything he had and tried so hard. He’s a wonderful horse.” Melbourne Cup winner Americain (Dynaformer) raced wide throughout but he enjoyed an uninterrupted passage and chased hard all the way in the straight for a gallant third. Both Bin Suroor and Dettori saw the Dubai Sheema Classic (Gr 1, 2400m) at next March’s Dubai World Cup meeting as the probable next target for Mastery. “And as he will stay in training we may be able to come back and try and win this race again in 2011,” added the trainer. “Saeed [bin Suroor] told me the horse has been flying the last couple of days,” a jubilant Dettori said later, “and he was going so well as they came into the straight I knew when I pulled him out that nothing was going to outsprint me from there. For a four-yearold he’s had very little racing and the fresh legs have definitely helped.” GOT NEWS? PRESS RELEASE? “The pace of the race was too slow for him especially at the last bend,” trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre said of Americain. “He’s a very good horse, but it’s impossible to catch these faster runners under such conditions. I’m confident he will eventually succeed over 12 furlongs (2400m) and with a faster pace, perhaps the Japan Cup could be a race for him next year.” email: [email protected] Gerald Mosse felt the slow pace was against Americain. “The pace was way too slow for him. I could not get him to start faster than he did and then they stopped. I pushed him early on to avoid being outpaced but he does not have the turn of foot to catch www.anzbloodstocknews.com JAPANESE NEWS REVE D’ESSOR TAKES FILLIES CHAMPIONSHIP Sunday at Hanshin saw the unbeaten Reve d’Essor sail to victory in Japan’s top race for juvenile fillies and, with it, near-sure recognition as the Two-year-old Filly of the Year for 2010. The gray Reve d’Essor easily topped the field of 18 for a win by a half-length margin over another gray, Whale Capture, in the 1,600-metre Hanshin Juvenile Fillies (Gr 1) at Hanshin Racecourse. Despite being slightly slow out of the gate and a bit keen in the early stages, Reve d’Essor settled in, found her rhythm and turned the rest of the journey into a dream ride for Yuichi Fukunaga. Breaking from the No. 11 gate, Fukunaga stayed relatively wide as he inched slowly forward down the backstretch behind Dance Fantasia, head held high and out of control. Into the stretch, Fukunaga eased Reve d’Essor out for a clear run and, signaling for acceleration, got it. By Agnes Tachyon out of the Highest Honor mare Reve d’Oscar, Reve D’Essor went to the gate with her odds at rock bottom and her strong finish and relative cool-headedness have already sparked talk of “the new Vodka” and hopes that next year’s classic will see her take on the Japanese Derby. “The second pick was in front of us so going into the stretch I was careful only to bring her out well and not too soon,” Fukunaga said. “She will always quicken, so I wasn’t worried,” the Shiga Prefecture native claimed. It was only the third race for the late-blooming Reve d’Essor, who only debuted on Sept. 11 in Sapporo. Her next time out gave her the Daily Hai Nisai Stakes (Gr 2) at Kyoto. In the Hanshin Fillies, Reve d’Essor bettered her half-sister Reve d’Amour, who was runnerup in the Hanshin Fillies three years back. “I wasn’t sure how she’d handle the start so I didn’t have a clear plan,” he said looking back over the race. “Once we were out on the track, however, I felt that she was going to break well. Her start was better than usual and since I hadn’t wanted to go from the far back, I’d say she was definitely improved,” Fukunaga said. “She was such an overwhelming favorite, I’m relieved we were able to deliver the goods,” winning rider Yuichi Fukunaga said of Reve d’Essor, who clocked 1:35.7 over the firm turf at Hanshin. Fukunaga, who celebrated his 34th birthday three days ago, said he saws great potential in the filly, but he remained characteristically reserved in his praise. There aren’t many horses who, despite being a bit green, can run like she can. I’m looking forward to what’s to come and hope I can stay with her the entire journey,” he added. Runnerup and fourth pick Whale Capture (by Kurofune, with Kenichi Ikezoe riding for trainer Kiyotaka Tanaka) was able to upstage the other top picks. Race second choice Dance Fantasia failed to handle the slow pace (12.5-11.2-12.1-12.7-12.7) as she pulled Yutaka Take down the outside the entire backstretch. With little left for the finish, Dance Fantasia finished in ninth place some 5 lengths off the winner. Italian rider Mirco Demuro guided Rice Terrace to a third-place finish behind Whale Capture by a length. In fourth place 3/4 length later was third choice Aventura. Longshot Tsurumaru Onepiece, with Katsumi Ando up, lost ground in the final strides but managed to finish in fifth place. ADVERTISING. [email protected] Reve d’Essor is trained by Hiroyoshi Matsuda, 64, who also trains superstar Buena Vista. The Ritto-based Matsuda opened his stable in 1983 and won his first G1 race only five years later with Cosmo Dream in the ’88 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks). Reve d’Essor brought Matsuda his 15th group 1 level victory, his second Hanshin Juvenile Fillies in two years. Bred at Northern Farm and owned by the Sunday Racing Co. Ltd., Reve d’Essor’s 65 million yen take-home pay for Sunday’s win boosted her catch for three races to nearly 112 million yen. Report: JRA. EDITORIAL. Fourth behind Gold Edition in the San Domenico Stakes on his seasonal debut, Court Command then reeled off consecutive wins in the Up And Coming, Golden Rose and Stan Fox Stakes. Sent to Melbourne he started a warm favourite for the Caulfield Guineas and finished a creditable third behind Wonderful World in his first attempt at 1600m. Court Command was retired to stud as a four-year-old but made a successful return to the track at five, winning the BTC Sprint (Gr 3) where he defeated El Cambio to give sire Commands a 1,2 in the 1350m sprint. Court Command won again as a six-year-old and he retired the STALLION PROFILE CONT. STALLION ANZ ANZ winner of six of his 18 races and more than $1.1 million in stakes. His sire Commands has emerged as a serious sire son on Danehill (USA) and he has Group 1 winners from the Oakleigh Plate winner Undue to the Queensland Oaks winner Purple. Commands is closely related to Group 1 winners Octagonal and Viscount, both sires of Group 1 winners. As a Group winning sprinter, Court Command certainly fits the commercial mould and he has the sire-line that has shown its successful extensions are overwhelmingly the naturally fast sprinters. Court Command is a most attractive individual and would appear to have all the necessary attributes for a stud career. The iron horse, just a six year-old, was lining up for race start 68 and on top of his victories he has a further 23 minor placings. Ridden by apprentice Muhd Firdaus, Happy Everybody staved off a late bit by Capablanca (John Powell) to score by a head with Mr Timely (Danny Beasley) a half-length away third. After taking the lead in the early stages, Happy Everybody held sway turning for home but under pressure from Firdaus began to run out up the track. Near the 100m mark My Son (Robbie Fradd) was forced to check whilst in the concluding stages Mr Timely was tightened for room. Happy Everybody showed plenty of fight despite his tendency to lug off the track in the straight to provide trainer Steven Burridge with his 90th winner for the season. “He’s just a tough little horse,” said Burridge. “He backed up well from his run nine days ago and just thrives on racing. He is such a great doer in the stable. When he’s not racing he puts on weight. “He was up 8kg the other week and was only down 4kg this week. If he doesn’t race he gets up in weight. I thought he may have been still a little above his winning weight, but he proved me wrong. “He’s been a great money spinner for the owner who has been a great supporter of the stable and hopefully his winning turn has not yet finished.” With a 93 rating, Happy Everybody was handicapped on 54.5kg before the 4kg claim of Firdaus bought him in with a luxury 50.5kg. Happy Everybody, who raced as Probable in Australia before coming to Singapore, has enjoyed his best season, winning six races for the Burridge stable. By Commands from the Spartacus mare Induct, Happy Everybody took his prizemoney to almost $770,000 for the Eight Eight One Stable with his victory.
