Glossary of materials
Metals: Korson Furniture uses metal with four types of finish: chrome-plating, polished stainless, brushed stainless or powder coating. The chrome-plating process
deposits a layer of chromium on the metal giving it a shiny mirror finish and high resistance. The powder coating process involves applying electrostatically a coat of
colored pigments made from metal powders to the substrate followed by a clear protective coat for gloss and abrasion resistance. The polished stainless process
involves grinding, polishing and buffing which decreases the micro-inch roughness and improves the mirror image-defining quality of a surface. The brushed stainless
process involves polishing the corrosion resisting metals with a 120–180 grit belt or wheel then softening with an 80–120 grit greaseless compound or a medium nonwoven abrasive belt or pad. It retains some of its metallic lustre with a pattern of very fine lines parallel to the brushing direction.
Tempered Glass: Tempering is a heat treatment that creates balanced internal stresses designed to improve the resistance of glass sheets to flexing and thermal shock.
It is also called safety toughened glass because when broken it shatters into small pieces without sharp edges. Glass can also be colored by introducing a dye into the
molten glass which is then uniformly distributed throughout the sheet.
Clear Acrylic: Artificial fiber made from a special group of vinyl compounds, primarily acrylonitrile. Acrylic fibers are thermoplastic (i.e., soften when heated, re-harden
upon cooling), have low moisture regain, are low in density, and can be made into bulky fabrics. They wash and dry easily and are dimensionally stable. They are resistant
to bleaches, dilute acids, and alkalies, and to weathering and microbiological attack. Our acrylics are specially formulated to offer: enhanced impact resistance and
toughness, resistance to light exposure and resistance to mold.
Wood: Korson Furniture uses three types of wood products: kiln dried wood (hardwoods and soft-woods), wood veneers and MDF. Our wood veneers are built with
natural woods to strict specifications to ensure many years of exceptional use. The kiln-drying process is placing sawn lumber into kilns where heated air is circulated
and the temperature and RH of the kiln is controlled for the purpose of reaching the wood’s equilibrium moisture content (EMC), without jeopardizing the strength and
structural integrity of the end wood product and resist shrinkage. Some of our furniture items are constructed of veneers over durable wood products such as medium
density fiberboard (MDF). MDF is used in quality furniture for areas that need to be stable, such as large surfaces. This durable wood product does not expand or
contract with heat and cold and does not absorb as much moisture as solid wood, which results in stronger and longer-lasting furniture.
