Tracheostomy
Tube System
The Blom Tracheostomy Tube
System has a unique Subglottic
Suctioning Disposable Inner
Cannula that gives the clinician
the ability to suction the
secretions above the cuff of a
tracheostomy tube, which will
help them in their strategy to
fight VAP.
includes Fenestrated Cuffed Tube Kit, Non-Fenestrated Uncuffed Tube Kit, Subglottic Suctioning Cannula,
Speech Cannula, LPV, SoftTouch Tube Holder, EVR and Training Disk
(Fenestrated Cuffed Tube)
The Blom Tracheostomy Tube
System is an innovative solution
for providing ventilator dependent
patients with a tracheostomy the
ability to speak regardless of cuff
inflation.
Blom Tracheostomy Tube Kit
(Non-Fenestrated Uncuffed Tube)
Included in the Blom Tracheostomy Tube System
are the Speech Cannula and Low Profile Valve
(LPV™). Each has its own unique function
in allowing the patient to speak in their own
natural voice. The Speech Cannula is designed
to allow speech for ventilator dependent patients
that require a fully inflated cuff with a Blom
Fenestrated Cuffed Tracheostomy Tube. The
LPV is designed to allow tracheostomized, nonventilator dependent patients to speak without
the use of finger occlusion, with the Blom NonFenestrated Uncuffed or Fenestrated Cuffed
Tracheostomy Tube.
Both the Subglottic Suctioning Cannnula and
the Blom Speech Cannula are used with a
Blom Fenestrated Tracheostomy Tube. The
fenestration is located approximately
1mm above the cuff, so when inflated,
fenestration contact with the tracheal
mucosa is prevented.

Fighting VAP
Speech is a Fundamental Right
VAP increases the mortality rate and hospital stay
time for patients in the ICU. With the declining
reimbursement for hospital acquired conditions,
a new cost effective strategy is needed. One
innovative solution to fight VAP is continuous
subglottic suctioning which can be performed
easily by the healthcare provider.
Imagine how difficult life would be without being
able to talk. You would be unable to greet others,
verbalize how you feel, express your needs or say
“I love you.” Many ventilator dependent patients
requiring the use of a tracheostomy tube are
currently denied this right.
Blom Subglottic Suctioning Cannulas are single
patient use for up to 24 hours of effective removal
of secretions.
The Blom Speech Cannula provides patients
the ability to speak easily, in their own natural
voice, without cuff deflation and without extensive
ventilator manipulation.
Speech Cannula
Subglottic Suctioning Cannula
• Contains a suction catheter attached to the
outside of the inner cannula which ends at the
level of the fenestration
• Continuous suction at 20 mmHg
• Suction line cap allows intermittent suctioning
when needed at 100-150 mmHg
• Removes secretions accumulated above
the cuff and thereby may reduce the risk of
tracheal infection and VAP
• Blom Subglottic Suctioning Cannula #4, 6,
8 and 10 respectively use suction catheters in
sizes French 5, 6, 8 and 10
• May also be attached to an air source of 8 to
12 lpm to verify the upper airway patency of
your patient prior to use of the Blom Speech
Cannula
Speech Cannula
INHALATION
No air escapes past the cuff
allowing all the air to fill the lungs
Cannula Clip
• Reduces disconnects
• “Telephone-jack” style lock with audible
click assures secure placement
• Found on all Blom Cannulas
Exhaled air flow is
available for phonation
Air to Larynx
Bubble Valve - Expanded
Bubble Valve - Collapsed
Flap Valve - Open
Flap Valve - Closed
Fenestrated Cuffed Tube
• The Blom Cuffed Tracheostomy Tube is fenestrated, which is necessary for
use with the Subglottic Suctioning Cannula and the Blom Speech Cannula
• The fenestration is approximately 1mm above the cuff
• Cuff inflation prevents fenestration contact with
the tracheal mucosa
• Fenestration location and its rounded, smooth edges prevent granulation
EXHALATION
Air
Flap Valve and Bubble Valve
Use under qualified supervision only
• Use with the Blom Fenestrated Cuffed
Tracheostomy Tube for vent-dependent
patients
• The Blom Speech Cannula has two unique valves that re-direct air allowing speech for ventilator dependent patients with a fully inflated cuff
• During Inhalation the Flap Valve opens and the Bubble Valve expands into the
fenestration sealing it, preventing air escaping to the upper airway
• During Exhalation the Flap Valve closes, the Bubble Valve collapses to unblock the fenestration and air is
directed up through the fenestration to the vocal cords allowing speech
•
EVR
The EVR safely prevents
“false” low expiratory
minute volume alarms,
which occur when the
Blom Speech Cannula is used and air is redirected
through the upper airway
instead of back to the ventilator
LPV
• Use with Blom Non-Fenestrated Uncuffed or
Fenestrated Cuffed Tracheostomy Tube for
spontaneous breathing patients.
• The Flap Valve opens during Inhalation and remains
closed during Exhalation re-directing air to the vocal cords
• Provides a hygenic alternative to finger occlusion
• Low profile
• May be used in conjunction with humidity
and tracheostomy mask
