King’s Somborne villagers show their
feelings over development plans
175 villagers attended a meeting in
King’s Somborne Village Hall on 11th
February to discuss the Gladman
planning application.
This is for
outline planning permission to build 78
new houses between Eldon Road and
Furzedown Road.
Villagers committed to pulling
together with the Parish Council to
fight the threat to the village.
The villagers have already secured the
assistance of experienced local
Planning expert Stephen Smallman to
help in the battles ahead. The villagers
are committed to fighting this through
the Test Valley Borough Council
process and all the way to appeal if
necessary
The King’s Somborne Parish Council
attended the meeting in force and local
MP Caroline Nokes was there to lend
her support.
Ms Nokes spoke at the meeting,
saying: “The good news for King’s
Somborne is that this land falls in
Northern Test Valley, which has a 5
year land supply… the proposed
development is also contrary to the
existing and proposed Local Plan, and
is in the Countryside, not the village,
so countryside planning policies apply
to it”.
UK Parliamentary hopeful, UKIP
Councillor Sandra James was also at
the meeting to support the campaign.
Supporters and concerned residents
from other surrounding villages, such
as Broughton, were also there to share
in experiences of challenging these
concerning development proposals
threatening the Hampshire
countryside.
King’s Somborne Parish Clerk Peter
Storey said that the Parish Council is
already committed
to producing a
Neighbourhood
Plan which, when
adopted, will put
more
planning
decisio ns
and
power in the hands
of the village
community.
The Chair of the
meeting, villager
N i g e l
Wolstenholme,
who
r un s
Somborne Valley

Vineyards and asset management
business at Hopland’s Farm, King’s
Somborne, asked villagers to join
together and contribute skills in media
relations and communications,
ecology, traffic management and flood
defence. Anyone with a willingness to
help in any way is most welcome to
help in the ca mp ai gn .
All
contributions of time and experience
are on a voluntary basis, but are for the
benefit of the whole community.
King’s Somborne villagers - and
residents from nearby villages affected
or threatened by similar development
proposals - who would like to help are
invited to contact the campaign email
at [email protected]
A questioner in the audience asked the
organisers of the village meeting to
introduce themselves and explain why
they were particularly suited to
running the campaign. Here is a brief
summary of what they said:
Nigel Wolstenhome:
Owner of Hoplands
Farm
and
the
So mb orne
Valley
Vineyards. Nigel has
been a property
developer and asset manager for many
years. Nigel has years of experience
with land development, developers and
planning.
Sandra Rowden:
Resident of No. 2
Furzedown House,
Sandra runs an
independent catering
company called the
Little
Kitchen
Company. Sandra is passionate about
preserving the English countryside.
Anne Riley:
Resident of No. 1
Furzedown House for
over 22 years, and a
lawyer (but not a
planning lawyer) for
over 30 years. Anne
explained that her role
so far with Sandra had
been delivering flyers to every house
in the village and setting out the chairs
for the meeting. Anne said that if
anyone in the village wanted to replace
her on the organizing committee, they
were very welcome to do so.
Patsy Pritchard is also a member of the
organizing committee (and also
delivered flyers and put out chairs for
the meeting), but could not be at the
meeting due to other commitments.
Patsy has lived in the village for more
than 25 years and is secretary at
Wherwell village school.
As mentioned, if anyone wants to join
the organizing committee, they would
be most welcome: this is a village
effort, and we welcome all and any
offers of help.
Funds
Once this goes to appeal, the village
will need to set up a fighting fund to
help fund the opposition at appeal. If
you have ideas for fund raising
(sponsored cycle rides, jumble sales,
sponsored clay pigeon shoots or
whatever), please send your thoughts
to the campaign email. We may also
run a little competition for a title for
our village campaign; we thought of
“Save our Somborne” (SOS) but that
(Continued on page 6)
5
may be confusing; can you think of a
snappy title?
Concerns over traffic in the
village grow:
The recent development near the
allotments has seen a shocking
increase in heavy traffic through the
village. This is what the village has to
look forward to if the Gladman
application is approved:
If we do not stop this speculative
development, we will be living in a
town

Parish of Somborne with Ashley Annual meetings
As a Church of England Parish we
hold two ‘legal’ annual meetings each
April, both on the same night. The
first is the Annual Meeting of
Parishioners where the Churchwardens
are appointed. The second meeting is
the Annual Parochial Church Meeting
(APCM).
The meetings this year take place on
Monday 27th April starting at 7.30pm
in the church.
The election of
Churchwardens is open to people who
live in the parish as well as those on
the church electoral roll.
Persons whose names are entered upon
the church Electoral Roll (and such
persons only) are entitled to vote at the
APCM. At this meeting, the financial
statements for 2014 will be discussed
together with reports from various
church groups. The Minutes of the
2014 Annual Meeting have to be
approved as well.
Each year we elect two
Churchwardens (for a 1-year term),
and at the APCM we elect members of
the Parochial Church Council (PCC)
who stand for election or re-election (3
-year term).
If you would like to be considered for
any of these posts, forms are available
from me. Or, indeed if you would like
to know more about what is involved,
please do contact me.

Parish Council notes
Mr Dyke, the Open Spaces Warden,
and two members of the public
attended the public session of the
Parish Council meeting held on 2
February 2015. Mr Wolstenholme
outlined the plans being laid by the
anti-Gladman group to object to the
application to develop at the top end of
Eldon Road when it was considered by
the Test Valley planning committee in
the near future.
Among the other points of general
interest discussed were:
 Actions are in hand by the KS Flood
Action Group to continue to increase
awareness in the community of the
flood risk and the preventative
measures that should be taken.
 The defibrillator had now been
installed outside the Crown Inn and
training for anyone interested in
learning how to operate it would be
advertised soon.
 The legal action necessary to enable
SSE to bury the overhead supply
cables crossing the 3 Fields site was
nearing completion following which
work could at last start.
 A new Parish Council website was
now accessible at http://
www.kingssombornepc.org/
 The amount of litter in the area of
Lancaster Green and surrounds gave
rise for concern and Hyde Housing
would be taking action.
 Hampshire Highways had given
permission for a seat to be installed
at the junction of Riverside Green
with Winchester Road and this
would now be arranged.
8
February 2014
 The forthcoming
Parish Council
elections will be
on 7 May 2015
(have
you
thought
about
becoming
a
parish councillor
– why not contact the Parish Clerk
for more information?).
The Annual Assembly will be held in
the King’s Somborne Village Hall at
7.30pm on Thursday 30 April 2015.
Given that this will be an excellent
opportunity for everyone to attend and
ask questions of their Councillors, a
large presence is hoped for.
As always, a full set of minutes can be
found on The Sombornes website and
in both Cross Stores and Martin’s
Corner Shop.
The next meeting of the Parish Council
will be on Monday 2 March 2015 at
7.00pm in the Epworth Hall. All
Parish Council meetings are open to
the public and we look forward to
seeing you there.

King’s Somborne Annual Assembly
The Annual Assembly will be held in the King’s Somborne Village Hall at
7.30pm on Thursday 30 April 2015.
You are invited to put the following questions, together with those of your own,
to the Parish Councillors:
 What proportion of my council tax is spent by the Parish Council, and on
what?
 What are the powers and functions of the Parish Council?
 What is the working relationship between the Parish Council, Test Valley
Borough Council and Hampshire County Council?
 What are the responsibilities of your elected Parish Councillors?
 What improvements has the Parish Council made or facilitated in our
community during the past year?
 What could the Parish Council try to improve during the coming year?
 What is required of a councillor?
Light refreshments will be available from 7.00pm with a chance to chat
informally with your Parish, Borough and County Councillors before and after
the meeting.
We look forward to seeing you there.

Tennis in the MUGA
The Parish Council has agreed that if I
can get together a sufficiently large
group of parishioners (ages 12 to 100)
who wish to play tennis regularly, or
who would like to take up the game,
then the group would be eligible to
book the MUGA for one-hour slots up
to a month in advance. Please send me
an email if you are seriously interested.
Please give me some indication of
whether you could play at weekends
only, or also on weekdays, during
daytime or evenings.
Players will have provide their own
racquets and assist with the collection
from store of the equipment and the
erection and removal of the posts and
the net and
return to the
store.
If we get the
go-ahead, I
would hope to begin sessions in
March.
Clearly, only a maximum of four
members will be able to play at any
one time and so a schedule of time
sharing and the booking of a number
of slots per week will have to be
developed to suit the size of the group.

Somborne and
District Society
Gordon Pearson was elected chairman
at an extra-ordinary general meeting
held on the 28th January. He replaces
President Bill Lomas who has chaired
the society since the last AGM in July.
David Pennington has now taken over
the position of editor of our quarterly
newsletter which is delivered free to
all members. He has also been coopted onto the committee.
At the last meeting, blue-badge guide
Jake Simpkin took us on a 1.5 mile
walk around the mediaeval city walls
of Southampton, stopping at places of
interest along the way such as the
Tudor House, God’s Tower, the castle
and the undercrofts. This was all in
the comfort of the Village Hall and a
large audience attended despite the
cold weather.
Once again, the society will be
promoting the John of Gaunt Award.
This annual event is open to all
primary schoolchildren within the
parish and is operated in conjunction
with the village school, where most
attend. However, this year the award
will not be launched until May (after
‘SATS’) with the presentation in July.
As the society holds many historical
records of the area, including the
parish records and the huge Sawyer
Collection, it has been suggested that
there might be scope in setting up a
small group comprising members who
wish to trace the history of their
family. This is being considered by
the committee and may be inaugurated
with a presentation by a genealogist.
Watch this space.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday,
25th March in the Village Hall at

of 1215 and its implications today.
Should be interesting.
Come at
7.30pm.and have a coffee or tea, etc
and have a chat with fellow members
or speak to membership secretary,
Linda Aucock and join the Society.

Burns Night Ceilidh
On Saturday 31st January the Village
Hall was packed with happy folk who
came to the ceilidh to have an
enjoyable evening and support a
worthy cause.
The cause is Banunule School near
Kampala, Uganda, a primary school
which offers education, food, medical
care, sanctuary and support to build a
better future for orphans and
impoverished children.
Children
receive free education and all the
necessities of life. Maura Jeffrey from
Up Somborne worked as a volunteer
head teacher there, and, supported by
Lynne Duncan and a team of friends,
put on a terrific evening for us all to
enjoy.
Volunteers manned the bar, the
kitchen, the raffle, and had made a
wonderful job of decorating the hall in
style, with tartan wreaths, illustrations
of Burn’s poems, and tartan table
runners.
The haggis was piped in in style by
Rory McLenaghan in full regalia, and
the ode to the Haggis read with a
lovely accent and an excellent and
very funny translation for the
Sassenachs among us.
Catherine Cartwright sang two
charming folk songs, accompanied by
Lynne Duncan. The Ceilidh Tree
provided music for Scottish country
dancing, all led by their very able
caller who taught us all we needed to
know to join the dance and whirl with
the best of them.
Sustenance was magnificent– not only
haggis, but an array of the finest meats,
salmon, salads, vegetarian lasagne,
lentil pie, followed by cranaghan or
trifle (with plenty of sherry!)
delightful tablet (fudge), and home
made short breads.
It is to be hoped that such a
tremendous effort by all concerned,
with wonderful raffle prizes, raised a
handsome sum for their charity.
Thank you to you all.

Pre-School news
I can’t believe its nearly Easter
already, the terms seem to be flying
by. The summer term is always our
busiest as more and more children
enrol before all the four year olds head
off to ‘big school’ in September.
However, there are now four members
of staff at most sessions, so there are
still a few places available if you have
a child you would like to join. We can
now get government funding for
certain 2 year olds to attend the preschool. Remember all three year olds
get 15 hours a week paid for by the
government, so they may be able to
attend for free. Contact Becky on
07530 893773 to see if you may be
eligible, or you can visit
www3.hants.gov.uk/childrens services/childcare/ for more
information.
As
we
approach the
end of our
fourth year,
some of our
equipment is starting to get a little
tired. So, we will be having a few
fundraising events over the summer to
enable us to upgrade some of the
outdoor equipment. Please do come
along and support us. We will be
starting with a cake sale in the
churchyard after the service on Palm
Sunday, the 29th March at about
11.00am. We hope to see you there.

Scout Hut renovation appeal
Following the request for help in The Gauntlet magazine, I have taken up the
challenge of trying to raise money to update the kitchen and toilets in the Scout
Hut. I am going to do this as part of my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.
I will be making application for grants, but really need support from the local
community to enforce our commitment to this cause.
At present there is no disabled toilet facility or wheelchair access in the hut and
the kitchen is in a very poor state, which is restricting activities that they would
like to hold with other Scout groups.
This is going to be a very expensive project to complete, so we would appreciate
any help you can offer.
We would be thrilled to receive any donation, or perhaps you could consider us
for a fundraising event or even offer an item we could auction on ebay!
If you can support us in any way we would be so grateful.
Many thanks

Village Hall news
I am very pleased that we have now
finished the internal refurbishment of
the Hall. We will be having an official
opening ceremony on Saturday 14th
March and we are delighted that Lady
Joan Appyleyard has agreed to ‘cut the
tape’. Invitations have been sent to
everybody who contributed to the
original appeal and also those involved
with the recent work.
The fact that we have finished the
internal work does not mean that we
can rest on our laurels. We have
already had preliminary discussions
about improving the entrance area and
if the air source heat pumps continue
to work well we hope to be able to
remove the old oil boiler and its tank.
This would then free up some space
and allow us to build on some much
needed storage.
The Hall continues to be busy and it is
sometimes difficult to ensure that
hirers leave the hall clean and tidy for
those following on. I would ask that if
you have an event you should
endeavour to ensure that loose items
are put away and rubbish is put into
the dustbins
We noticed that the rubber internal
lining had come loose in a couple of
the double glazed windows.
The
window suppliers informed us that
there been problems with a faulty
batch of windows and as a result they
have agreed to replace many of our
window panels. This work should be
carried out over half term so
interruption to our regular bookings
should be minimal.
26
On the maintenance front, we have
repaired the PIR at the entrance so
hopefully people will now have
sufficient light when opening the
entrance door. We have also replaced
the faulty hand dryer in the gent’s
toilet as well as one of the emergency
lights in the main hall. There was a
power cut to part of the village last
week which also affected the village
hall at the end of the busy meeting and
I was delighted to see that all the
emergency lights worked well and
there was plenty of light for people to
leave safely.
A reminder that there will be another
of the very popular coffee mornings on
Saturday 7th March and everybody is
invited to enjoy the delicious coffee
and cakes as well as the bring and buy
sale, lucky dip and the raffle!
Everybody is welcome!

Somborne Sisterhood WI
A good turn out of members welcomed
three guests and our speaker for the
evening, local Bowen therapist Helen
Barnard.
Once all attending had a cup of tea or
glass of wine in their hands, Samantha
Boot made brief announcements
before introducing Helen.
Helen
talked a bit about her background and
how she came across the Bowen
Technique in Australia after she was
treated successfully with it for a riding
injury.
Helen then went on to explain more
about the history of Bowen and what it
can treat, as well as demonstrating the
technique on a few willing guinea
pigs!
After questions from the floor had
been answered, Samantha then thanked
Helen for her fascinating talk before
the raffle was
drawn (the star
prize – a Bowen
technique session, having been kindly
donated by Helen).
On February 18th, the Sisterhood will
be fielding a skittles team for the
Hampshire WI group semi-finals.
After winning their first heat, the team
of five will be heading to Abbotts Ann
to try and repeat their performance, but
they will be up against some stiff
competition. Full report to follow next
issue.

SATURDAY 25th APRIL

An evening wuth Hazel O’Connor
At the Somborne Sessions!
Following the sell-out success of
British Blues Award singer and
guitarist Marcus Bonfanti in February,
the current season of the Somborne
Sessions continues on Saturday 7
March 2015 with alternative blue grass
band, ‘The Mountain Firework
Company’ (see February’s edition of
The Gauntlet for full details). Then we
are thrilled and delighted to end this
season on Saturday 25 April 2015
when we will be spending ‘An
Evening with Hazel O’ Connor’.
Hazel probably needs no introduction
to many, but this singer-songwriteractress really is an iconic figure in the
British entertainment world, and
beyond. She describes herself in these
words:
‘I ran away from my home in Coventry
when I was 16... made and sold clothes
in Amsterdam, picked grapes in
France, joined a dance troupe that went
to Tokyo then onto Beirut (escaping
the start of the civil war by one
month), travelled West Africa, crossed
the Sahara….
Through all this
experience of life and the world, I
realized that singing always cheered
me up. I decided to be a singer.
Through strange turns of fate I ended
up in a film called ‘Breaking Glass’. I
also ended up writing all the songs for
the movie….’
Those songs received a BAFTA
nomination (for best soundtrack) and
were the beginning of a career that has
taken Hazel to the West End, to
Glastonbury and to a thousand other
places in between. She has made
countless records and TV appearances.
‘An Evening with Hazel O’ Connor’
features Hazel herself alongside
saxophonist Clare Hirst (formerly of
eighties girl band, ‘The Belle Stars’)
and keyboard player Sarah Fisher (ex‘The Eurhythmics’).
Tickets for this evening really will be
hard to come by, so grab yours while
you can in the usual way- either by
clicking on our web site
(www.sombornesessions.co.uk)
or by calling Doug Stammers on
01794 389192. They are priced
at £18 each (£20 on the door in
the very unlikely event that any
will be available by then). Doors
at the Village Hall open at
7.30pm on Saturday 25 April for
‘An Evening with Hazel
O’Connor’.

Meeting the Vicar....
As many will know, when families get in contact to arrange a
baptism, wedding or funeral, I usually meet with them either
in their homes or at The Rectory in Stockbridge.
It might be that from time to time some would like to take the
opportunity to see me for other reasons, such as for a brief
chat, to check something out or if they need some help.
With this in mind, I am planning to be in the ‘Parish Room’ (entrance through
the brown left side gate of the ‘New Vicarage’, Romsey Road) on a number
occasions in the next few months. For those unfamiliar with the ‘New
Vicarage’, it is next to Froghole, Please go around the side of the house and
do not ring the bell on the front door as the Vicarage, at present, has tenants.
Dates coming up are:
March - 18th
2.00pm - 4.00pm
I look forward to meeting anyone who calls in.

King’s Somborne W I
The meeting was held on the 11th
February, chaired by our President,
Mrs Thelma Blamey. Events attended
in January included a lunch at the local
pub, always a pleasant convivial
occasion, and two members were
present at the recent ‘Handing-on’ of
the centenary baton in West Tytherley.
The walkers’ group is still active and
the Book Club will be meeting on the
23rd February to discuss “The Silver
Pigs” by Lindsay Davis.
Our speaker this month was Mrs
Christina Reid who gave an interesting
talk about “John Keats in Winchester”.
Probably most of us had not realised
that Keats lived briefly in Winchester,
the city which inspired him in 1819 to
write the famous ode “To Autumn” –
quoted in full by Mrs Reid.
John Keats, born in London in 1795,
had an unhappy childhood
overshadowed by the dreaded
tubercular disease, of which he would
die aged 25. Meanwhile, having first
studied medicine
he then decided at
the age of 21 to
become a poet.
Later, his short
sojourn in Winchester affected him
deeply and he wrote of his keen
interest in every detail of the place: the
streets and houses, the college, the
woods, the river and most of all the
cathedral.
Mrs Reid’s talk was illuminated by
visual aids with delightful pictures of
landmarks familiar to John Keats – one
of our great Romantic Poets whose
short life ended in Rome in 1821.
Mrs Reid answered any questions that
arose after what had been an enjoyable
talk.
The next meeting will be at 7.30pm on
Wednesday, 11th March in the
Epworth Hall. We look forward to “A
Lighthearted Look at Astrology” by

Somborne!
In
January, we had
some really relaxed
sessions where we
did team games and
caught up on all the
gossip from over
the holidays. We
also said goodbye to
Sian who will be
leaving to work in another role for
YMCA. She will be greatly missed
and the youth group will definitely be
a lot quieter! It was so nice to see
some of our young people attend our
club night in Winchester on the 17th
January and enjoy a fun night out! In
February we got crafty and made
Valentine’s Day cards for all our loved
ones and had some great conversations
around positive relationships. It was
great to have some new faces and
visitors to the group too.
King’s Somborne youth group runs
every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month.
Look forward to seeing you there!

If you have any prayer requests there are slips on the table at the back of the
church which you may put into the box provided or alternatively phone me,
Dulcie Witts on 01794 388267.
Our meeting is very informal and we should be pleased to welcome new
members.

The Minister has the last word
Dear Friends
I was listening to the radio today and they were talking about a report they had
read which said that if you take 10 minutes a day to do something different,
something creative, something for yourself, it will have a great impact on your
life and you will be happier and live longer.
I couldn’t agree more and it set me thinking. Many of you know that I like to do
papercraft and 10 minutes a day would be good, but it is not really long enough to
do anything. You would only just get the stuff out and then have to stop, so that
won’t do. I asked myself what would relax me and be something I could take
time out to do on a daily basis. The answer I came up with is something we can
all do and I am guessing many may already be doing. It is taking 10 minutes of
your time to spend with God
We often read in the scriptures how Jesus took himself off to be with his Father.
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the
house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Mark 1 : 35
He knew that he needed that time in prayer, in quiet reflection, to just be and not
do, to be in the presence of God. He had to recharge his batteries.
We all live hectic lives, we run from one activity or event to another. We live by
our diaries. I hear many people say if I lost my diary (be it paper or electronic)
then I wouldn’t know where I should be. If Jesus needed to recharge his batteries
then think how much more we need to. Why not take out time of your day to
stop, even if you have to write that 10 minutes into the diary, but take time out.
Be still; try not to think about anything. This is a hard discipline at first, so if you
are struggling then think of a different person everyday, until you can empty your
thoughts.
I pray that you will find that inner peace that we come to when we take time to be
with God through his Son.
God bless
