FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK “She’s always dancing. I wonder if she hears music in her head.” - Terry Cardwell The dancing girl to whom family friend, Terry Cardwell, refers is 2-year-old Nehal Farid from Afghanistan. Despite her love of rhythmic movement, Nehal had never heard a sound before last week. Thanks to a charitable initiative, Nehal was brought all the way to the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mt. Sinai Hospital, where Dr. Peter Cooper installed a cochlear implant in her right ear. At first she was frightened by the first sounds that she heard, and she nestled more snuggly into her mother’s arms. Then Nehal heard her mother’s voice for the first time, and her face lit up into a big grin of surprise and delight. Now she can dance her heart out to music she hears like the rest of us. Nahal’s look is a living prophecy of how our own faces will light up with a joy beyond description when we hear Jesus’ voice for the first time saying, “Come you blessed. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you before the foundation of the world.” As the Psalmist predicted, the just will dance for joy at the presence of God. On a more somber note, no one of us who was Nahal’s age or older at the time, will ever forget exactly where we were and what we were doing when we heard the first reports of an aircraft striking the Twin Towers fifteen years ago today. We winced as each further detail of the still-in-progress attacks came over the airwaves. Even at the distance of a decade and a half, we still need to hear a consoling word as well as speak words of remembrance. Please join us in church this afternoon at 3:00 as we reflect reverently, listen for God’s comfort in the words and music of the Holy Hour, and sit silently in the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. “ Speak, Lord, your servants are listening.” FR. JOHNSON would like to invite all parishioners to his Mass of Thanksgiving celebrating the Silver Jubilee of his Ordination to the Priesthood on Sunday, September 25th, at the 5:15PM Mass in the Church.
