Why
we
Offer
the
Communion Cup
at
Mass
All parishes of the Archdiocese are asked to offer the
Communion cup to the faithful at Mass, especially at
Sunday and feast day Masses. This policy follows the
directive of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal
(GIRM), which has been in place since 1970:
Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it is distributed under
both kinds. For in this form the sign of the Eucharistic banquet is more
clearly evident and clear expression is given to the divine will by which
the new and eternal Covenant is ratified in the Blood of the Lord…. (281)
The GIRM states that something is made “more clearly evident”
through reception of Holy Communion under both kinds.
So what is made clearer when we receive Christ’s Blood?
We become what we eat - and drink
If Mass were only about receiving grace, then partaking
only of the Body of Christ would surely be sufficient. But
Eucharist is about much more than that. It is also about the
reason we receive grace - to go in peace to love and serve
the Lord. Service includes sacrifice. The cup of salvation
teaches us, and those around us, what sacrifice ultimately
demands. It demands that we proclaim the death of the
Lord by becoming one with Christ’s Body - and his Blood.

Babysitting Co -Op
All parishioners with young children are invited to the
monthly meeting of the American Martyrs Babysitting Co-Op
on Monday, August 25, 8:00-9:00pm. Contact one of the leaders below for the meeting location.
The Co-Op is a group of parish families who exchange
babysitting services. In addition to having their children
watched by other parish parents, the families become a great
resource for each other, sharing experiences and forming a
close-knit community. The kids also have an opportunity to
make friends across age groups.
We overview how the co-op works and describe the many
benefits of participating. You will also have an opportunity to
get to know the current members and to ask any questions.

VIRTUS - Protecting God’s Children awareness
program in prevention of child sexual abuse

moving us closer to God
While country music is not my first (or second) choice in
music, I heard the opening lyrics to a song recently that
stuck with me. The words are "I'm just an old chunk of
coal but I'm gonna be a diamond someday." The song
writer expresses his current situation and faith that it
will improve. A great idea for all of us but how do we
move down the path to being a diamond?
The opening of our first reading from Isaiah has a good
way to start, "Thus says the LORD: Observe what is right,
do what is just..." Here's a blueprint for a way of life (much
like stewardship) that is laid out in very few words. One
way to observe what is right is to acknowledge that all
we have is a gift from God; doing what is just is to use
and multiply those gifts by helping others.
To stay on that path we also have to have faith that God
will help us like He helped St. Peter in last week's Gospel
and the Canaanite woman in this week's Gospel. Faith
is an interesting concept. It does not necessarily refer
to a belief in something we cannot prove, although
many of us may see it that way. Faith involves trust and
confidence. When the Lord challenges Peter’s faith, He
is really saying, “Peter, you do not have confidence in
me.” And when he heals the woman’s daughter He is
saying “You trust me very much.”
Trust is at the foundation of stewardship. Most of us
realize that trust is built by knowing someone well, like
a spouse or family member. Stewardship calls us to get
to know the Lord. We do this through prayer, reflection,
and study. We need to build prayer and reflection into
our lives throughout the year. The better we know the
Lord, the more we will trust Him. To have great faith in
God, we must be intimate with Him, one with Him. In
a recent homily, Pope Francis put it this way, “Put on
Christ in your life and you will find a Friend in Whom
you can always trust.
“Once one chooses to become a disciple
of Jesus Christ,
Stewardship is not an option.”

Spiritual direction is an ancient ministry, a unique one-toone relationship in which a trained person assists another
person in the search for an ever closer union of love with
God.
Directors listen carefully to the unfolding of directees'
lives to help them discern the ways in which God is
leading them. The practice of spiritual direction consists
much more of "holy listening" rather than direction in the
sense of offering guidance or direct advice.
American Martyrs Church maintains a list of Certified
Spiritual Directors who have received training, formation,
and are members of Spiritual Directors International.
They are committed to spiritual growth, both personally
and with those they accompany on their journey.

Human Nature and the Image of God
“…The memory of God has already faded for many people.
New generations are growing up without any religion. We
are fast becoming a society of ‘practical atheists.’ When
we forget our Creator, we forget what creation means.
We lose the sense of our own meaning as his creatures.
That’s what’s happening in our society. If God is not our
Father, then we are not brothers and sisters and we have
no responsibility for one another.
But the loss of God has even more personal implications
for our sense of life’s ‘meaning.’ When we lose our sense
of God, we lose the ‘thread’ that holds our lives together.
We lose the answers to the questions that help us make
sense of the world: What kind of person should I be?
Why should I be good? What should I believe in? What
should I be living for – and why? Many of the elites in our
culture today would argue that there are no true answers
to these questions – just different opinions, beliefs and
preferences. But we know that’s not true. We know
people need those answers. Without those answers we
don’t know anymore what makes a human being human.
In his first encyclical, Lumen Fidei, Pope Francis writes
about this in almost poetic language. He writes: ‘Once
man has lost the fundamental orientation which unifies
his existence, he breaks down into the multiplicity of
his desires…his life-story disintegrates into a myriad of
unconnected instants…an aimless passing from one
lord to another…a plethora of paths leading nowhere
and forming a vast labyrinth.’ This is where we are in our
culture.

life eternal. Along the way, we have need of
a resting place. Our resting place is in God,
by way of prayer. Our rest is God’s delight.

Contemplative Prayer meets every Tuesday evening 7:30 - 8:30pm
in St. Joseph Chapel at the Spirituality Center. We keep a very
simple structure, and have prayer instruction available for
those interested. Newcomers are always welcome.
