MALLIA’S MOMENTS
By Fr. Joe Mallia
This is the Fourth Sunday of Lent and so I thought I would
take a minute to remind us about the importance of not losing
focus of our Lenten goals now that we are half way through
the season. I had encouraged us to pick a person in our lives
that was in need of prayer or grace and let them know that we
were praying and fasting one day a week throughout Lent for
them specifically. How have we done with that?
People had promised to pray more, some had promised to
seek forgiveness or to forgive someone that had hurt them.
How are you doing with that? There are those who promised
a variety of things, well whatever it was, how are you doing
with that? The great part of Lent is that it is never too late to
start or to pick up again. So, if the answer to the question
was, “not very good”, do not grow discouraged, just start
again. God is a lover of second chances and so don’t be
ashamed or grow discouraged because you have not given it
your best shot to change aspects of your own life or to bring
grace into the lives of others, you can begin today.
That is why we are encouraged this week to rejoice! Because God forgives, God strengthens, God renews, God
loves, God is merciful, God is gracious, God is all that is good
and we are God’s children, so rejoice! Yes we have sinned,
but we are redeemed and so we should rejoice. It is not the
sin that defines us but the love of God; we do not live in the
shadow of our sin but in the light of God goodness. So, just
as we are happy to see signs of Spring around us and a reminder that the long winter will soon be done, nature gives us
an example of what should be happening in us at this time
when we too are able to come to life again because of what
God has done for us. Is there any reason today we should not
begin again and rejoice?
Our guests are coming: Again this year we will be hosting our
brothers and sisters who are not as fortunate as we are
through the good work of Christnet. We will be hosting them
during holy week-as if there was a better time of the year to
share our home with those who have no home physically or
spiritually. Please sign up today or this week to help in some
way. It is a great way for families to serve together.
Planning for holy week: As I do each year, I want to encourage all of you to take some time now to plan how you will be
celebrating holy week. I hope that it will include time of prayer
at church. I want to invite your to attend Mass on Holy Thursday when we celebrate the Lord’s Last Supper. At this Mass
we have the traditional washing of the feet with our own
unique twist. If you have never been to this Mass and if you
are struggling in your life or in your relationship with God, I
especially want to encourage you to come and most importantly have your foot washed at Mass. This is a very grace
filled moment for many people who have experienced this
beautiful liturgy. After Mass there is adoration until midnight.
Our parish church is open on Good Friday from about 11:30
am till 5 for private prayer. The adoration chapel is closed
starting Holy Thursday night. There are various prayers to
join in on and time for private refection. People stay for the
whole time and others only for a few minutes, but it is important if you can get here to give thanks for our salvation.
Finally, I want to encourage you to attend the Easter Vigil on
Holy Saturday night or Easter Sunday Mass. The vigil is long,
I will not lie but it is also the most beautiful liturgy of the year
as we bless the new Easter light, recall salvation history, welcome new members into the Catholic Church and share in the
joy of the resurrection. Again, all are invited to attend any of
our masses and I hope to see you there. If you are going
away, I hope that you have plans to go to mass and not just
the beach or Disneyworld.
Final chance to come to the auction: if you would like to come
to the auction and support our schools, you need to call and
make a reservation right away. All the money that is raised is
used directly to improve our schools and for our scholarship
fund. This is the major fundraiser for our schools and it really
helps keep us as a leader in education. Thank you for your
support.
Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day? This is just a reminder that St.
Patrick was not Irish, but he was Catholic, so if you really
want to celebrate the day, go to church. Also, since he was
not Irish, but was Catholic the more accurate saying should
be not that on this day everyone is Irish, but that everyone is
Catholic. That is why I think we should invite people to Mass
and not just invite them to the bar. You can still have fun that
day, but we should not separate the fact that Patrick was a
Catholic bishop from the story. He went to Ireland to spread
the faith not the blarney. May God, through the intercession
of St. Patrick bless the land and the people of Ireland. Amen.
Three Parish mission begins March 15th! Please join in our
three parish mission and reflect on the theme of forgiveness.
The first night is at St. Constance, then St. Alfred on Monday
with Tuesday being held here with Mass at 7:00 pm and our
special guest speaker at 7:30pm. There will also be a communal reconciliation service on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm. I
hope to see you there.

SATURDAY, APRIL 18, 2015
8:00 AM TO 1:00 PM
AN EVENING ON BOURBON ST. AUCTION 2015
IN SUPPORT OF CABRINI CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
The committee for Auction 2015 is hard at work preparing for another great event for our schools. The
theme of this year’s Auction is "An Evening on Bourbon St." scheduled for Saturday, March 21, 2015. The
gift solicitation crew has been gathering items for both
the silent and live portions of the Auction, as well as
seeking advertising for our Auction program.
Now, the committee is asking for help from anyone
willing to donate a gift or purchase an advertisement.
For the creative, you might be able to help by making
something memorable; others may prefer to purchase
a gift that would appeal to our audience. For business
owners, gift certificates or donated items are always
welcome, or perhaps you would like to make a cash
donation to sponsor a gift. If so, the committee will
select a gift to fill a specific need and make the purchase on your behalf. Another way to help is by placing an advertisement in the Auction program. Advertising in the program will ensure that more than 300 people see your message. A variety of ad sizes are available to fit any business need and price range. If you
would like to sponsor a gift, please fill out the form below and place it in an envelope with your check payable to Cabrini Schools, and turn it in to the rectory. If
you’re interested in an advertisement, please email us
at:
[email protected].
Any gift of new items or services would be wonderful. Perhaps a Christmas gift that is PERFECT - just not
for you - now you can re-gift it to Cabrini!
NEED AN IDEA?: Candles, jewelry, collectibles,
toys, power tools, hand tools, DVDs, electronics,
handmade quilts, software, garden equipment or decorations, wine or spirits, small appliances, theater tickets, sporting event tickets, sports memorabilia, personal services, or travel/vacation spots.
All donations can be delivered to the Rectory with
the form below attached. Your help with this exciting
event is greatly appreciated.

PARISH NEWS and EVENTS
BEING CHRIST TO OTHERS THIS LENT
The Christian Service Commission is planning a Lenten
Service Day March 21, and parishioners of all ages are encouraged to take part in an assortment of activities being held
in Holy Family Hall from 8:00 am to Noon.
• We will be making pillowcase dresses for the Little Dresses for Africa program, which was started by Brownstown
resident, Rachell O’Neill. She can’t join us because she’ll
be in Africa, but is sending a friend to share with us the
exciting things they have accomplished during the last
year with our help – last Spring, parishioners created
more than 500 dresses for the group to deliver to young
girls in Africa.
• We will be making personal feminine hygiene pad sets for
the suppressed young women in Kenya. This is a continuation of another successful project that got its start at
the parish last year.
• We will be decorating paper bags for the Sr. Judie lunch
ministry.
• For the homeless, we will be making mats from
“plarn” (strips of plastic bags that are crocheted together).
As you can see, we need volunteers of all skill levels –
you do not need to be a seamstress or know how to crochet.
If you can draw, trace a simple pattern or use scissors, we
can teach you what needs to be done.
We have adorned a cross in the Narthex with the needed
items. Choose what you like and return it to church by March
15. If you have any questions, or would like to register to participate, call Therese Tardiff, 313-381-5601. Continental breakfast and snacks will be served.
THANK YOU THANK YOU

On February 21, I participated in the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics. My goal was to raise $500 for this great cause.
I am humbled to say that I raised over $1,800 for Special
Olympics athletes in Michigan, specifically the athletes at Jo
Brighton in Wyandotte. On behalf of all the Cabrini Special
Athletes, Tessa, Tommy, John, Amie and myself I want to
send a heart-felt thank you to everyone that supported me in
this endeavor. I hope I can count on your support again next
year.

SPECIAL CABRINI USHERS QUARTERLY MEETING
MONDAY, MARCH 16, 2015 AT 7:00 PM
MUSIC ROOM (Behind the Sacristy)
Quite a few years ago, a number of Ushers and Funeral
Luncheon Crews took a course in the use of defibrillators, but
we have new Ushers who were not present for the presentation. Therefore, we’ve invited Megan Pierrel, our Parish
Nurse, to deliver a “refresher course,” that we might all be
able to respond to an emergency while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. She has ordered and replaced all the batteries
and pads on all the AEDs, and if she knows where the First
Aid Kits are placed throughout the parish campus, she will be
happy to make sure there is nothing expired and will restock
with the essentials to administer first aid by the ushering
staff. . . we’re talking bee stings, band aids, and things of that
nature.
Megan has graciously agreed to speak to our Ushers following our Business Meeting regarding the use of the AED,
as well as first responder information. She is hoping to obtain an updated video prior to that evening to share with us,
and is more than willing to answer any questions we might
have, so please, let’s have a good turnout for this meeting.
What you learn might save a life!
A number of important items will be on the Agenda for
the Business Meeting chiefly, the merger of teams to cover all
Masses adequately; and the upcoming Pancake Breakfast in
April. We’ll try to keep the Business Meeting brief to allow
Megan more time to teach and answer questions.
Thank you in advance for being present at our Quarterly
Meeting.

THE TUESDAY TRAVELERS
CHRISTIAN SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING
When: Tuesday, March 24, 2015
Time: 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
Where: Holy Family Hall.
ALL ARE WELCOME
We have officially named our parish travel group Tuesday
Travelers, in honor of my mother, the late Theresa O’Neil, who
organized a travel group when she was a very active member
of St. Frances Cabrini.
HELP US HOST THE HOMELESS DURING HOLY WEEK
With the freezing temperatures we have experienced, it is
hard not to think about our homeless sisters and brothers
whose lives are in grave danger because they sleep outside.
We thank God for those who started ChristNet to provide
nighttime shelter for the homeless in our area, and are honored to be hosting the warming center during Holy Week,
Sunday, March 29 to Sunday, April 5, in Holy Family Hall. Our
parish is one of several churches that take turns providing
shelter during the winter and early spring.
On average, we will welcome 30 men and women each
night that week, providing for them a hot supper, shower, a
safe night’s sleep, breakfast and a brown bag lunch. Folks
are with us from 7:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
The efforts of many make this Christian outreach a success, and we are certain this year the same holds true. Before the sign-up sheets go up in the Narthex March 7/8, please
reflect on the ways you could help:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Setting up and taking down the space on Sunday, March
29 or Sunday, April 5 at 7:00 am.
Working one of the night shifts – each night is split into
two shifts.
Providing food for an evening meal.
Preparing and serving an evening or morning meal.
Washing the bedding at a local laundry on Sunday, April
5 at 7:00 am.
Providing lunch items: napkins, large brown bags, individually wrapped granola bars, cookies, chips, fruit cups,
water bottles, and candy bars.
Praying for our neighbors who are homeless or struggling to survive this winter.
Monetary donations are also welcome to offset the cost
of coffee, lunch meat, bread and other expenses that may
arise throughout the week.
If you have any questions, please call Therese Tardiff,
coordinator of Christian Service at (313)381-5601.
ATTENTION HELP NEEDED
Regarding Divine Mercy Chaplet, Friday April 3
through Sunday, April 12, 2015. If anyone wishes to
help lead the Chaplet devotion please contact:
Joanne Witkowski at 313-928-1993 or
Lori Nowacki at 313-383-4684.
Thank you.
As the name suggests, our outings take place on Tuesdays and so far we have been to ArtPrize in Grand Rapids and
Meadowbrook Hall in Rochester. Our next trip is to Holland,
Michigan, during the annual Tulip Time Festival.
If you have never been, there are tulips everywhere - a
beautiful site to see, so I hope you will consider joining us.
Participation isn’t limited to parishioners – please feel free to
bring along friends and family. Traveling by bus with Bianco
Tours, we leave at 7:30 a.m. May 5 and head across the state
for lunch, a tour of Holland and some shopping in the quaint
downtown area.
We will be dining at the Alpen Rose Restaurant, a local
favorite, where you will have a choice Chicken Shortcake or
Alpen Rose Meatloaf. When we finish, a Dutch-costumed
guide will join us on our bus for a tour of Holland, sharing the
history of Windmill Island, Hope College, Tulip Lane and the
downtown area. We will then visit Vedlheer Tulip Gardens,
the midwest’s only working tulip farm, which spans over 30
acres and features more than 5 million tulips. It is breathtaking! Veldheer also includes the Wooden Shoe and Delft Factory.
We will be back to Cabrini by 9:00 p.m. Cost for the day
trip is $86, which includes lunch, and snacks on the bus.
Make checks payable to St. Frances Cabrini
For more information, call Therese Tardiff at 313-381-5601.
CRS RICE BOWLS
“Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask
ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich
others by our own poverty.”
– Pope Francis
Filled Rice Bowls should be returned to church on Palm
Sunday, so that we can forward our parish donations to CRS.
SR. JUDIE ANN LUNCH MINISTRY
On Thursday, April 2 we will again join Sr. Judie Ann in
her ministry to serve those in most need in the Eastern Market neighborhood. Our help will consist of making up lunches
which include: a sandwich, a piece of fruit, a cookie, bag of
chips and a water bottle. After the lunches are made we will
hop in Sr. Judie Ann’s car and begin to deliver them to her
friends in the neighborhood. In all 150 lunches will be served.
If you would like to assist in this ministry by donating needed
items please drop them off to the Rectory office by Tuesday,
March 31 in the morning or if you would like to volunteer on
the day of the service call Therese Tardiff at (313)381-5601 or
email [email protected]. Some items needed are: Peanut
butter and Jelly, 15 loaves of bread, water bottles, individually
wrapped cookies, chips, lunch size fruit cups/apple sauce,
spoons, napkins, men’s and women’s white socks, underwear
and t-shirts, and monetary donations.

PASTRIES TO CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK’S DAY
‘Tis the month of shamrocks and leprechauns and yummy
baked goods!
Youth ministry is hosting an Irish Bake Sale after all liturgies March 14/15 in the church Narthex. Just in time for St.
Patrick’s Day, you can purchase Irish soda bread, scones and
shortbread.
The sale will help our parish youth raise the money needed to attend Catholic summer service programs, National
Catholic Youth Conference and World Youth Day.
HOST AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT
The High School is planning to recruit through the council
on Standards for International Educational Travel, CSIET, several international students for the next school year. We have
been approached by agencies interested in assisting us with
the international students studying at St. Frances Cabrini
Catholic High School in preparing for a college career at a
U.S. university.
In order to enroll international students, we need to identify Cabrini Catholic Parish or School families who would be
interested in providing homestay housing. If you are interested in hosting an international student, please complete the
Host Family Questionnaire on our high school’s website.
As a host family, you will share our home and family life
with an international student as well as expose them to the
best of American history and culture. Together, you will celebrate cultural differences and discover similarities with regards to values and beliefs. Most importantly, your family can
make a difference in the life of an international student by fulfilling the dream of an American private educational experience and in providing a safe, Christian home away from home.
As a host family, you will be offered a monthly stipend
through the agency to cover the costs of providing your exchange student with meals, a bed, a place for their belongings
and transportation.
World Youth Day 2016
Krakow, Poland and Malta Excursion
July 21 – August 2, 2016
Let the planning begin!
In 1980, Pope John Paul II hosted the first World Youth
Day in Rome and ever since that time they have been held all
over the World. World Youth Day (actually a week or longer
event) is held every three years for teens the ages of 17 (or
going into Jr. year of high school) through the young adult
years. It is an opportunity for young adult members of the
church to come together as one body to share and grow in
their Catholic faith.
Some of the major cities that have hosted WYD are Denver, Paris, Rome, Toronto, Köln, Sydney, Madrid, and Rio de
Janeiro. The next World Youth Day pilgrimage is scheduled
for July 21 – August 2 of 2016 it will be held in Krakow, Poland. The pilgrimage plans are being handled through
UNITOURS INC. We have reserved 42 spaces with UNITOURS
INC. The cost of the pilgrimage is going to be approximately
$4,400.00 (Includes: Air fare, hotel, breakfast and most other
meals, transportation, WYD fee, tour of Krakow, a three day
excursion to Malta, tips, and taxes).
If you think you might be interested in attending and you
are going to be 17 or entering into your Jr. year of high
school, or older by July of 2016 a mandatory please contact
Therese at 313-381-5601 or email at [email protected] for
further information. This is an opportunity of a life time; you
won’t want to miss out!

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
March 15, 2015 Third Sunday of Lent
In today’s Gospel, God demonstrates great love for us by
sending his Son so that we may believe in him. We demonstrate our
great love for God by doing good works: reaching out to others, acting in justice and charity.
Through your almsgiving you are performing a good work; far greater than you
think. Know that your nickel, dime, quarter or dollar is multiplied by the coins placed
by others in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box.
CHRISTIAN WOMEN OF CABRINI
“MINI-RETREAT”
On Thursday, March 19, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm we will be
having our “Mini-Retreat.” Dr. Mary C. Dumm D. Min. is our guest
speaker who has an extensive education: Doctor of Ministry, 2006;
Master of Arts in Theology, 1992; Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies, 1982. She has a long list of experience/employment and has put
her education into practice wherever she worked. We are half way
through Lent and with Easter almost upon us, a retreat at this time
will be a good way to prepare us for Christ’s Passion, Death and Resurrections. Come and hear Dr. Dumm inspire us to participate in the
Triduum.
A light lunch will be served. A free will offering will be accepted. So come one,
come all and bring a friend, family member or neighbor. To register, call Rose Kenzie
at 313-382-4520 by March 15.
